Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have a cup of coffee and one of Bill T.'s chocolate donuts, please.
Thanks!
A blazing 45 degrees (F) this morning, so I'm not expecting to have to scrape any frost. YAY!! Wind's out of the East at 9 mph, so wind chill's 41 F, and relative humidity is 96 percent. Supposed to reach a high in the low 50's today, with rain off and on through the day. Beats a lot of other forms of precipitation, anyway! Even supposed to hit 60 F tomorrow!
Chuck & Kathy, best wishes with the layout design. Of course, like all layout designs I've heard of of known, it'll be subject to 'adjustments' once you start laying the track... Sounds ike your weather is back to its usual, huh? Keep taking care of each other. Hmm, I might see if I have some of that 'fake' oatmeal in the cupboard...
Dick, your dinner sounds like a good time. Is that a local area club that does that, or does Robert (Buck) 'host' it? Think I missed that part...
Wolfgang, to the Diner, and is that house available in HO scale? Thanks for stopping by, and for your wishes.
Duke, I'm guessing that those MOW pics weren't taken during the past couple of days, right? Thanks for posting those.
IN Phil, happy 'camping' over the Christmas season with your nephew. He'll probably get a kick out of the camping. Now, how could you manage a campfire in the front room?
Jerry, between your descriptions and Mike's photos, I'm gaining the pounds this week from all those goodies your CFO's are cookin' up!
Well, better get going for now. Just today and tomorrow to w**k, and then (other than on-calls) it's vacation time until after New Year's Day! Yippee!!
Blessings and prayers for healing,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
Mornin' all!
You know, it's the strangest thing!
Every time one of my home computers gets messed up, nobody ever did anything! It always happens "all by itself"! Isn't that odd?
I walked in the door last night from work and was greeted by my daughter informing me that "the computer is acting wierd. She has a marvelous gift for understatement! That puppy is crashed hard! I'm going to mess with it later. Might have to take it somewhere to have it looked at.
Well, got a followup doc's visit for the wife today. She seems to be doing well so I'm thinking this should be a good visit.
Warming up out there today. It's supposed to warm up for the next few days, then the bottom drops out and the snow comes back. Looks like a white Christmas is a real possibility!
Oh well, gotta run!
Later!
Good Morning everyone.....
Oatmeal and OJ please. (Any manderine OJ left?)
Rob ....That's a unique mix of steam power. I recall those aptitude tests the schools used a few decades back. Maybe they still do it. You know what I mean? They show 3 or 4 picures and you must mark the one that does not belong in the group. Two logging engines and an Erie triplex.......... hmmmmmmm ...easy.... check the trilex! ......... I suppose it's hard to find a 2-10-2 these days so do what you must.
Philnrunt........ Those propane cars will be just in time to heat the home. You won't need the campfire after all!
JimCG.......... You asked about grain hauling in the 1950's. Railroads had used box cars to haul grain through the 1950's. The very first covered hoppers for grain showed up in the mid-50's, but box cars were common into 1960. Covered hoppers were short airslide cars or PS-2 hoppers. Look at the "fine print" on cars you buy to see date built. I use mostly box cars for my grain elevators and my flour mill. Some of the box cars are Athearn's grain loading box cars which were common around 1960. To haul grain with a standard 40' box car, crews would place plywood or heavy cardboard in the doorways. Leaking cars were a good reason for pigeons to follow trains through the cities.
Philip ...... good to hear Mrs. PC is healing. We'll pray that continues. Just about any parent can relate to the "strangest thing".
Happy Model Railroading

***Dick, how about bringing some of the non-spiked eggnog into the Diner. Wife & I would sure like to try some.
***Philip, hope it is all good news for the Mrs at the Docs. Continued healing thoughts being sent her way, (and Jeffrey's way, too).
Ordered 2 last presents for the wife last night, HO Jug Band (to put on the front porch of a farm house she doesn't have yet) and the Dairy Farmers (which will go nicely with her cows). OK, Christmas shopping is officially done here.
Well, gotta get out and feed the critters. Have a great day all. Rob

Afternoon folks!
Pepperoni pizza and some Coke Zero please Chloe! Thanks!
Dick - Yea, please send the snowman overnight FedEx or UPS and pack a lot of ice too so it won't melt on the trip! Oh, and you got one of them HD jars too eh! I tried to add putting a lid on it but it never made it to the list....
Duke - Nice MOW pics from Apex. That is a nice truck there too, never seen one of them either. Next time you come down for the live steam meet we'll have to get together for some rail fanning around here, both CSX and NS have plenty of live activity.
Paul - Heading to New Mexico eh! You got family in Albuquerque? I love that area of the country; I can smell the burning pinion pine smoke in the air...
Phil - You were burning the midnight oil again eh! Bringing the outdoors inside sounds like a plan, just make sure you have a large enough smoke vent hole!
Philip - Good luck with the doc visit and best wishes for the wife continued healing. What kind of error messages are you getting on your daughters computer? I might be able to assist you in that matter.
Jerry - Ditto on the Captain Morgan's...and it certainly adds life to a fresh Coke-a-Cola....
Wolfgang - Nice winter pics you got there..... "there is a frost in the air"....
Cheers,

Wolfgang is back. Good to see you Wolfgang. Guten Tag!
It's raining here. Not a pretty day.
Lunch time. I would like a BLT on T , but the toast thread is fading away.
Cheers, everybody!
Good afternoon folks. I thought I would pop in and say hi. Does anyone have an around the walls layout that has an emphasis on passenger running? I'm looking for ideas for something that I could break down into 2x4 or 2x8 sections. I figured I could pick a section to start on that would incorporate into a larger layout. Pictures or track plans would be much appreciated. I hope everyone has a good day.
Hello, everyone!
Sorry that I have been gone for a while. It's because that I am moving.
GREAT news, though.......
I got a HUGE train colloection, worth over 1,000 dollars!
But I have a LOT of work ahead of me in rehabilitating all locomotives........

None at all. it pulls up the login screen OK, and then you go to an identity, any identity, and you get the correct desktop pic for that identity but nothing else. No toolbar, no icons, nothing. If you hit Ctrl+Alt+Del you get no out of the ordinary programs running. If you try to run an autoboot disc like my backup dic or the windows XP disc it starts spinning, then stops. There's no way to start it manually.
It's an old computer, but it's the best hunk-o-junk I got!
XP Home
I'm trying to get it going in safe mode now. It doesn't look like it wants to go.
Nope.....safe mode gives me a black screen with the XP version info acros the top and "safe Mode" in all four corners. All prompts are unresponsive.
Oh well, have to take it in I guess.
Good evening to all, another 4" to shovel today, it just keeps coming, but Maine got it far worse, another foot for those lucky guys like Colby, et al.
CAPE JIM: The diner is not a club event although many people attend from several clubs. The Steaming Tender management is a husband and wife team, and the wife was a neighbor of Bob's as a child. So Bob reserves a table for about 20 people and we have a great diner and a greater time talking about layouts, trains, new products, and everything inbetween.
JERRY: You betcha lil beaver, Captain goes with anything!!! I'll bet you are one of the few guys that knows who that person is that I was refering to in my first line.
RYAN: There is no lid to be found in this world for the HD jar, and for those that think HD is High Definition, you are SINGLE, or never married. LOL
ROB: Some eggnog? No Captain? Ok....coming right up. BTW, if you ever get up this way for either Christmas or Easter, or Thanksgiving, I will take you to Cooper's Farm, where you will be able to get the best eggnog that you will have ever tasted.....no bull. This stuff is from very happy cows I would say.
Ok, time for spiced eggnog, talk later guys,
Evening all,
Just drove 721 miles today, SC to OH is a long drive. Friend sent me this video of a train plowing snow.

Sorry I've been full bore catching up with Christmas shopping and getting into the swing of things. Did a couple of Santa stints to get me up into the spirit but I fear it just will not be the same without "Dear Old Dad". Just been a real rotten year I fear.
However things are lloking up as Lisa's mother got thumbs up from the cancer surgeon today!
Merry Christmas!

Good evening, All. I thought that I would stop by for a cup of coffee. I am off now until the 31st, and find myself holding up Larry's progress by working.
I hope that everyone has their shopping done.

Evening Gang: The trip to New Mexico is off. John called this morning and said that Diane had been admitted to the hospital. She was having contractions and losing fluid. The doctor decieded to take the baby. The baby was about 10 weeks premature. She weighed 3 lbs on the head. They flew the baby to Ft. Worth Cook Childrens hospital. The doctors have given her an 80% chance. Prayers would be appreaciated. Right Now I'm pooped and really ned to get to bed. The baby will be in the hospital for about 2 months. We almost lost John when he was born so we've been through this before but it's still hard. I'd like some help from Capt. Morgan but that is not an option.
For good news Clark Gardens called and my MRR stuff is in. I haven't gotten a chance to look at the Model Power all metal stuff yet. I'll give a report when I do.
Good Night All
Evening, Diners - Zoe, how about a hot fudge sundae and a cup of coffee, please?
I was going to stop by this afternoon, but then was reminded we were having our meeting of everybody that works on-call, so I never got back by the Diner until now.
Lee, that's a bit of a trip - over 700? Shopping trip? Or can you say before Christmas?
Fergie, good to hear that Lisa's Mom got some better news.
Dick, that's pretty neat to be able to get together for dinner like that. 'nuther 4 inches, huh? Colby must be digging himself out from under however much he got, I guess.
Sue, after tomorrow I'll pretty much be off work until after New Year's, too. So if you're working, how is that holding up Larry? Does he have to wait until you get done with some section before he gets to his part (MRR'ing, right?)?
PC, as you say, puzzling that the computer 'breaks itself'... Does your daughter use the computer more than the rest of the family, perhaps? Good luck with getting the 'puter up and running again very soon.

Garry and Jerry - I'd read about the way they would use boxcars (though I'd like to find some pics of that), and if I got some (laser-cut?) wood I might set some up that way. But for my layout (set in the Southwest), they wouldn't have enough rain for much grain, so I'm going for beans as what the elevators will be storing instead. And I'm thinking the covered hoppers would work better for shipping the beans to Texas and the Lay's Co. (to be made into bean dip? ). I'll use the two bay hoppers I have for cement, since I figure I'll have a gravel plant and there's lots o'sand for the sand... I have about three Athearn PS 2893 covered hoppers, and that's in the right time period for my layout. But I'm wondering what other cov'd. hoppers might work, as well.
Time to get back to my sundae... Hope everyone is healing up and getting better.
Blessings and prayers,
Paul, sorry to hear about your grandbaby, but good that they're giving her a high chance of making it. Hospitals nowadays are really good at making sure premees survive and get healthy again. are on the way for her, and the parents. Albuquerque will likely still be there after your new granddaughter is out of the hospital and growing like a weed. Keep us posted on the progress of the family (as you get time).
Paul ..... That's really upsetting news. Very sorry to learn about that. Prayers to your family.
JimCG .... I believe even beans were in box cars through the 1950's.
Not much mrr'ing today. Getting ready for Christmas. It's going to be a busy period until January. We were are the neighbors for a get-together this evening. At least he's a mrr'r and there was another mrr'r there too. Food was good.
Good night.
***Paul, crossing fingers & toes for Diane's baby. Odds do sound promising.
My oldest brother has been in and out of hospitals for the past couple weeks, this time for what started as a bone infection in one finger. Now he is having severe pains in both feet, he believes to also be bone related. He is on antibiotics, so hopefully that will start working for him. He had to take pain meds to go teach, which noing my brother means it must hurt like he**!
On a lighter note, wife & I went to her the assisted living facility where her folks reside and took her dad to the Christmas Party. She actually got him dancing with her which put many smiles on many of the folks there. Just picture a large middle aged woman dancing with a little old man who is moving his cane at near mach speed while the rest of him barely maintains an upright position, and you can get the idea. And what made it even funnier was the singer playing "Play That Funky Music White Boy" for them.
Oh, had to bring in a mare into the barn today after she displayed some colic symptoms. Seems OK now tonight...whew!
Well, heading to bed now. Healing thoughts to those in need.
Rob
Let's see, looks like it's all on Garry's tab today! Waited just long enough!
Picked up our nephew in Indianapolis today, his flight (on a Northwest A319) was right on the advertised, landed within a minute of what the website said 3 hours earlier! K.C. (aka The Boy) flew 10 hours from Honolulu to LAX, had a 3 hour layover, then another 4 hours to Indy, but the part of the trip he hates the most is the 2 hour drive from Indy to Redkey! What a mook! For the 30 minutes we visited when I wasn't driving, 25 were spent wrestling with him. I told hom Santa said he was getting a beat-down for C-mas. He's getting bigger, and I'm getting older, so next year I just might let Santa do it.
JimRC and Silverspike- You guys are absolutely right! Every time I build a roaring blaze in the middle of the frontroom floor of our trailer, I always keep a big glass of water handy, 'cause that's no time to skimp on safety!
Heartland- Sometimes I feel like two tankcars of propane is what we use every winter! But I am glad they are coming. These might be the last new cars I buy mailorder, I'm going to try to hit more trainshows and swapmeets in '08. You can sure save a buck or two at them.
Dick and Cox47- It sounds like there are more than a few of us here with a little of the Captain in them!
PaulB- You and your family will be in our thoughts, and if the baby is anything like you, I'm not worried. Sounds like surviveability is built in!
For any of you celebrating Christmas early- Fri or Sat- have a very Merry Day. I'll be back Sun night, LWATRDR, so we'll see y'all just that much closer to the big day!
Good Morning from Tipton IN !
