A little early for me in here, but needed to check on the mare. Doing fine, appetite returned so will pump her up with good hay today and return her to the back pasture this evening. Will also need to make a hay run later when I get up for the day.

Forgot to mention, I won a raffle at that party yesterday..."Dinner at Longhorns", my favorite place for Salmon.Dinner [dinner]

Going to sip my coffee and drift back to sleep now. Have a good day all. Cowboy [C):-)] Rob

Nope.....safe mode gives me a black screen with the XP version info acros the top and "safe Mode" in all four corners.  All prompts are unresponsive.

Oh well, have to take it in I guess.

Pc: I had the same problem this morning. I force started the Windows XP CD from CMOS and reran the setup program. That got Windows running again. All I had to add was to reinstall IE7.

Whats a "CMOS"?

All computers have a set of routines that govern how the main board works and what does what. When the computer is turned on there will be on many computers a sentence that appears breifly that says 'PRESS DEL TO ENTER SETUP'. On some computers it's F2 instead of del. The CMOS setup menu gives you many options to use, including the boot order of the drives. On the computer I'm using I simply changed the boot order so that the CD drive would start first. If nothing was in the CD drive the hard drive would be the second boot device.

OH!!!  Ok, I did that last night and set the CD-ROM drive to go first and had first my backup disc in it, and when that didn't take I tried it with the windows disc.  Nothing!  I think it may have surfed it's last virtual wave!

Mornin', Zoe - how about a blueberry bagel and a coffee, please? Thanks!

After my 'mini-thread' here about freight cars for grain/beans/etc., I have one more question. Has anyone seen or used some kit or wood or other materials to convert the doorways of boxcars for grain usage (so it looks like it's in use, sort of...)? Or can someone track me down some images of such boxcars/modifications? I'll be looking myself, but would love any hints on where to be looking.

Talked with LHS owner/club member this a.m. about seeing if he can get me a couple of the ATSF PS 2893 covered hoppers in. I've seen some on eBay, but want to give my business locally (for his discount and so I can double check that they'll fit my layout's era). I have some Cotton Belt and a Frisco version of those already.

Payday Smile [:)] today, so will be finishing up my Christmas shopping today and tomorrow. Yeah!! [yeah]

I'll be at the window booth if anyone else comes in, Zoe.

Blessings and prayers,

Good morning ( almost noontime here on the east coast ) Been out clearing away another 2" of snow from last night. The weather bureau now says that we are only 1" of snow away from the alltime record for snowfall in December!!!! Talk about extremes, last December was snowless and the warmest on record. It is only 21F here at noontime, it certainly is an olde time Christmas here in New England, 28" on the ground now here in central highlands of MA.

PAUL: The prayer wheels are turning for that tiny little girl, not to fear however, she is a Christmas baby and will do just fine.

ROB: Ahhh, I see you love Longhorn Steakhouse also, and the Salmon !!!! I love that dinner also, it is just great, I love Salmon even better since it lowered my Cholesterol from 230 to 164 without pills.

FERGIE: Yes, this will be a tough one buddy for sure without dad, but he would want you to be happy and enjoy Christmas with your family.......you "know" that he is happy. If you have any doubts, go to your local bookstore, or library, and read the book, "90 minutes in Heaven".

PHILNRUNT: Yup, the Captain is a prime ingredient in many forms of liquid refreshment like eggnog. But only for OF's.

Great video of the snow plow train.....thank you for sharing with us.!!

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Jim .... just keep the box car doors closed and nobody will see if the have the wood inside for holding grain/beans. Also, you might consider the Athearn grain loading box cars. They actually are 1960's cars with no roof walks, however.

Jerry..... you asked about the IC E9.  It's still awaiting repair parts.

Whistling [:-^]

Good Morning Crew,

I'm down and out with a wicked cold this morning. I can hardly breath. Went to the Doc and got an Rx, so hope it kicks in soon.

Chloe, if you would be so kind, I'll have a Large OJ, fresh from Ed. and a toasted chesse and onion and green pepper sandwich, hold the salt & pepper though.  Thanks much.

Paul, Sorry to hear about the wee one, but let me tell you, my daughter-in-law is a neo natal nurse and it is absolutly amazing what they can do now with pre-mees.  She phoned us the other night and told us she had just been put in charge of a wee one that was under one pound and no bigger that a coke can, born many weeks early but the prognosis for her was fairly upbeat and in regard to all the others she has worked with they have all had a hard road for awhile but the percentage of successes is very high.  Our prayers are with the babe and your family.

PC. Take good care of the Lady, by the sounds of it she is a keeper.  Prayers as well for the both of you and all others that find themselves in need.

It is so hard to believe that Christmas is right upon us.  This year has gone faster than any other that I have experienced. I remember my Dad saying that as he got older, so I guess i'm in that same mode now.

Jeff, You are going to have to STOP using that foot for Cat Fish bait. Give it a rest and let it heal up.  Maybe try "Noodling" rather than just hanging the foot off the bridge.

Fergie,  Whats happening??  Its been very quiet from you for awhile.  Have you fallen in love with DRY LAND or what?

Glad to hear the animals as well are fairing better. It gets pretty tough on them in this screwy weather.  Up their portions a little.

Well ,whether I feel crummy or not I had better get some late Christmas things caught up. But I will only be in about the second notch today.

Check in again when I can.   A good day to all.

Chloe, put that sandwich on Cape Jim's tab. The amount he eats here he will never know the difference.

refill, please & thanks. Never did get to rest after the early post. Already returned Cold Mountain (mare) back to her pasture, put out two new round bales, cleaned two stalls then added fresh shavings. All is well on the ol' farm again.

***Jerry, thanks for that! I am a bit worried for my oldest brother. He has had too many problems in recent years.

***Dick, was Salmon the only thing you changed to your Cholesterol from 230 to 164? That is a terrific drop you achieved.

***Philip, looks nice and bet it sounds great. Does your daughter already play?

***Colby, Good Luck at the swim meet.

ROB: Salmon was the only thing in my diet that changed significantly. I cut down on meats somewhat, but we never ate that much on average a week, mostly chicken, fish and lean hamburg ( meatloaf, meat balls and hamburgers ) I probably have Salmon in one form or another on average, two times a week, sometimes three. This summer I drank a lot of iced Green Tea. Same breakfast ( Cheerios and skim milk & OJ ) Lunch is usually a Lite Yogurt and low fat, low sodium Progresso Soup. Your guess is as good as mine what really did it or in what combination. I'm happy, and my Primary Doc is very happy.

***Dick, obviously keep doing what you have been doing. I have often heard Salmon (wild caught) touted as a super food and I usually have it once every week or two. I really should have it more often. It is by far my favorite fish and I especially like the way Longhorns fixes it. I make a pretty decent baked salmon myself which costs less, but there is something to be said for having someone else fix it and not having any dishes to do afterwards. Big Smile [:D]

Happened again: Just brought in Miss BeDowntown (Palomino Paint mare), showing the same colic symptoms as was Cold Mountain yesterday. Was
beginning to worry I would not be able to get her to stand up out in the
middle pasture, but Twister (another mare) came and gave me a little help. Took a
while to walk her through the gates and into the barn. Noteworthy is
how much she drank once in the stall. Although in a different
pasture than Cold Mountain was in, they did eat from the same bale, so
I am still thinking it was something in the hay. If the trickle in the
creek was bad, then all the horses would be sick, right!?! Anyway, will
keep an eye on her throught the evening, plenty of water & no hay until
I see several piles of road apples. Haven't had real critter trouble in
a good while, so I'm surprised it has been two of our best mares and
not the old ones. Confused [%-)]

CAPE JIM,   Both CN and CP up here and I would imagine most of the American roads did the same, They placed (Hoarding also called Dunage )  over the doors on the inside of the boxcar. This was made by placing planking horizontally across the door. They would start at the bottom and build pretty well to the top on one side and would leave enough space at the top on the other door so that the guy doing the "hoarding" could get out. But before he came out he would then place cardboard that came in rolls over the hoarding to stop as much leaking of grain as possible.  The boards that they used were rougher boards (not planed lumber) in alot of cases and they would have been anywhere in the 2x4 to 2x10 in size, and not necessarily all of one size.

So if you were to model this, which is a great idea, the door of the boxcar would be open and you would use scale type basswood across the door (done from the inside) The shoot or spout from the elevator would then be placed into the (Manway) or the space that the "hoarder" had escaped from.

CN used boxcars (40 ft) done this way long after everyone else had gone to covered hoppers, along with light aluminum hoppers to haul grain to the sea port at Churchill Manitoba, on Hudson's Bay, because they were much lighter and the rail up there is light and it runs across a lot of muskeg. (frozen mushy swamp type area). These boxes ran up there into the mid 90s. Maybe CN Charlie could update us more on the exact timeframe.

Sure hope this sheds some light on this subject for you.

***In a former life I was a serious endurance athlete. One morning I swam 9 miles between breakfast & lunch just for fun and could have easily gone all day, piece of cake. One of my training partners was on a world record setting relay team but missed on both his Olympic Team bids. I was in as good a shape, but lacked his sprint speed. On a bike I would waste him (my other training partner was a world record setting distance cyclist). And running...forgetaboutit, that was my forte.Big Smile [:D] Now I would probably get winded swimming a few laps of an Olympic pool, riding around the block or jogging to the mailbox. How a disease can ruin one's body. No complaints though, lots of wonderful memories I wouldn't trade for new ankles, a new spine, or anything else!

Evening all,

I got a nice surprise today.  Buddy of mine needed to downsize some of his HO-scale stuff and gave me 2 Great lakes freighters.  Both are almost 6' long, one is a self unloading ore boat.  Both are a little dusty but in good condition.  So now all I need is to find some Hewlits and I'm good to go.  I'll post a few pictures once I clean them up a little.

Phillip, nice guitar I use to play (once upon a time).

Rolling stock, I've done some research and downloaded several pictures and it seems to me the pre 1970's rolling stock is rather boring.  Covered cement hoppers, gondola, flat cars, box cars, ore cars, open hopper cars, and domed tank cars seem to be about it in the railroads inventory.  Anybody have any insight on this one?

Evening Gang: The baby is doing better. She's still a long way from being out of the woods. Both her lungs have tiny holes in them which is not unusual for preemes. She is getting plenty of o2 into her blood. She has plumped up a bit also. Thanks for all the prayers.

We got a call from AARP that they had received our paper work and would have it processed in 2 to 3 weeks. Now we're worried that Mary Ann will be without supplemental insurance since my Cobra will end on the 31st. I just may send the check to cobra for Feb and screw everything up. That's according to AARP. Just what I need to get me all shook up again.

I got the first 2 cars for the Hiawatha train set and the Milwaukee depot and 2 extra train sheds. Right now I don't even feel like going down to the basement and checking them out. I guess I should, it may help.

Lee: Are you going to share one of those bulkers with me? You sure did get lucky there. Are they models of speicific boats?

Well I guess I'll take a look at my goodies.

Good Night All

Thought the Christmas shopping was done, until I saw this one:

HO Willie's Warning (Early 50s 2-Door w/Driver & Late 40s Squad Car w/Officer)

If I can swap the man in the car with a dark haired female, then it can represent my wife being pulled over on her way home to the farm. Remember her being stopped recently when she had that high fever and was weaving all the way from Atlanta? Well, I think that is something that belongs on her HO layout, am I wrong?Laugh [(-D] Bought one tonight for her. OK, THAT IS IT...LAST PRESENT...ALL DONE!

Good evening Diners:  Many things have prevented mmr progress beyond painting the upper level yard tracks this week.  Amongst which was more snow than we've had all this season so far in one dump yesterday; half a tooth falling out while I was eating a soft dessert last night; and then the need to take swift advantage of Kris' having the oven on for sausage rolls this morning.  So, a no-sugar-added Christmas-cake type loaf thing was thrown together by yours truly based on the banana bran loaf that is now a staple of my morning coffee time.  This thing has, besides the banana, rasins, dates, apricot, and chopped walnuts.  The icing is a nsa marzipan Kris does each Christmas, it's mainly vanilla pudding mix and ground almonds in 18% coffee cream.  The "snow" on the holly leaves is Splenda®  Enjoy, there should be enough for virtually everyone.

I heard from Noah, and he has pics of the CP "Holiday Train" on his Photobucket account at http://s126.photobucket.com/albums/p89/WSOR_3807/holidaytrain2007/

While in his album, check out the flat car load in the http://s126.photobucket.com/albums/p89/WSOR_3807/Model%20Railroad/ album. Thumbs Up [tup]...and CapeJim, there seem to be plenty of 2 bay hoppers on his layout.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]...BTW, what scale are you modeling again?  Noah's in N.  I've got some N 2bays that I may be persuaded to part with......

LilRob:  back!  How many versions of you have there been now? Hope the PC repair thing works out for you.

Wolfgang:  !  Thanks for the gingerbread house, it looks delicious, and the scenicing is great.Big Smile [:D]  What do you model in mrr?

Sharp photos of the frost too.  Thanks.

Dick:

DER JOHN: What's with the switch motor on top? There wasn't any way to mount underneath? I'm sure you checked it out though.
...No point in going under cover for this  one Dick, as it's hidden anyway.  Besides, I had some of those nifty Peco surface mount devices over from the Alberta layout.  3rd reason is that that area is just outside of where the facia of the lower level of the layout falls, a tricky spot.

Frank:, where in Ontario would that be?

Corey: My layout is around the wall, and has passenger service.  Not emphasized exactly, but far more passenger than most small modern roads would tolerate!  Browse around in http://s3.photobucket.com/albums/y51/der5997/ and see if there are any ideas.  I made a lot of mistakes in this layout, so if you have questions, please ask.

Derrick:  Welcome back!

Fergie: Good news about your MIL.  Thinking of you this Christmas.  It's a bitter sweet time for a lot of people. (Like Paul's John and Dianne) Angel [angel]

Paul: Our daughter was full term, but premi weight.  We'll pray everything works out for the baby, and of course, John and Dianne.Angel [angel]

RT:

somehow I keep getting messed up on my favorites in this forum it seems there are about 3 different headings.
...Is it the page # that is the difference?  I delete the old reference (presently page 52) when I've caught up, and Add a new Favorites at the page I'm now on (Page 58 were I do leave right now) Keeping the favorites "managed" like that has cut down on the number of references to the Diner.

Who was it asked for Canadian bacon the  other day?  Folks, we don't have any I our stores.  It all gets shipped to the US, so if you aren't getting yours, sort it out with the guys in the Northern Teir!

Lee:  Those lakers sound like impressive models!  Where does one store a couple of boats like that in the average train room?  I decided against even trying to do a small freighter to carry containers to/from my terminal.  I'd seen the prototype in this shot.

Rob:  Not wanting to complicate your Christmas shopping, but did you check out http://www.richmondcontrols.com/...go go to Vehicle Lighting for the cherry light on that cruiser!

all, and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

BTW, as I said to Noah, this is a Christmas Tree

And this is a Holiday Tree!

Paul, This is the first one.

This is the second one, but the model is before the self unloader was installed.  The names have been changed on the models.  Both of the ships have been knocked off their stands my my buddy's cat and need some minor repair and cleaning.  Both are about 625'.
