Perhaps question them on removing the HD, accessing the info and transferring to a new 80 or 100 gig? A few years back the PC at work puked, we called in a computer guru and for $60 above the cost of the HD we were up and running in about 3 hours with a new HD. Maybe also see what they say about streamlining the PC just for your current use of it. I say that because depending on the components used internally a small upgrade in one area can make a world of difference in operation.
Hello ....
I suspect many locomotives are in the roundhouses, because it looks so quiet here.
Paul .. sound like things are looking up with your new granddaughter, and I hope that continues.
Ryan .... Enjoy the IC toast.
Jerry .... the grain elevators were kit-bashed. I had a narrow and long area next to the wall. It's fun switching the elevators.
Happy Model Railroading

Hey folks! coffee please.
Hey Ryan! I DID IT!
http://donkey.rrpicturearchives.net/
That's my proto pic archive. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Ryan's tabs are all on me thru the holiday season! ) So order up my man!
Been an up & down day-meaning by that going back & forth between the workbench (basement) & the comp (upstairs) to check something I hadn't printed out for prototype reference. Either way, things are coming along well with the models. I think 2008 will be a good year for me in that aspect. (as to also starting benchwork for the Hocking Valley Southern!)
Lee-just stuck my head out the door-no wind here yet, but we'll probably get it shortly. (the fronts tend to angle in a ways that you folks get it about an hour or so before we do.) OH! since you're back, & now that I can (THANKS AGAIN RYAN!) I want to share this clip again-you know who these guys are LOL, & watch the skit a minute or so into the clip.
Phillip-I got my comp in the spring of 2002 with a 40g HD-& this past summer added a 250g secondary drive-best move I'd ever made with mine-I updated my speakers & transferred my music collection (11000+ songs) over to it, & also all my train related stuff & it hardly makes a dent in the memory.
Jerry-Most definitely I'll share pics of the 86' once done-the CSX ex B&O line going thru Sterling about 20+ NW of here (PA to Chicago) is my main railfanning place-probably won't get up there until the weather warms up a bit though)
I was on here browsing much earlier in the day, & watched again Wolfgang's 44-tonner Henry at work. Logan was sitting nearby, & as the bell started dinging, he stared at the speakers cocking his head. I hate to imagine how he'll react in the basement down the road once I get things going
(Looks at clock) YIKES! better hit the sack-gonna work on my projects tomrrow & get presents wrapped, etc. on Monday. I'll probably stop back in within the next day or so. NITE ALL!
Good morning.
Here is black ice. We resigned to go with the dog, only in the garden. A day for the basement??

Mitch, if my memory is working correctly, I think you have to put the 'title' of your link (which can be the link address itself or maybe some more descriptive words), highlight that in the MR Forums website editor, and then the 'link' icon should un-grey and be usable. When you click on the icon, a pop-up window should give you text entry boxes in it for the URL/address, and a pull-down menu - for whether clicking on the link opens in the same window or a new one).
I'm using Firefox also, so try that out to see how it goes.

Intense weather last night! Thats what had me up a couple times throughout the night. Torrential rains and howling winds.....thought it was going to beat the house down! No snow though.
***WIND ADVISORY UNTIL 7 PM***
Today: sharply colder, cloudy with snow showers - temps falling into the 20s Tonight: cloudy with flurries - low: 23
Winds were strong overnight, up to 50 - 60 mph in some locations. Winds are still gusting in the 35-45 mph range as I write this.
This is supposed to die down by tomorrow evening. I hope so, otherwise Santa's ride could get pretty wild!
Just picking up around the house a little today. We have lots of relatives wanting to come over since we can't go anywhere. We're going to see if we can't get the wife downstairs for the day on Christmas. She told me last night that the leg feels like it's healing much faster this time around, so thats real good news.
Might get that layout time in this afternoon. Depends....I might just be lazy and take a nap!
So whats up with you all?

Hello again ......
Jerry asked about my kitbashed grain elevator, and here's another view.......
Hi everyone,
Been away for so long, I'll see if I can get up to speed. I see the diner has many new customers these days. Welcome all, good food and fellowship to boot...
Been pretty much only stopping in at the big board for some quick looks. This past month has been quite eventful.
Finished my last kitchen job and decided to take some time off. Had some major oral surgery for complete dentures. I knew I needed some down time for that anyway. Well while recovering, I had to replace the engine in my work van. Not normally a big deal for me, but the weather conditions here in Massachusetts went bad right in the middle of the work. Too big a project to tie up any of my friends bays or have my son use the Dodge dealership...so in the driveway it was. The temps on some days were single digits w/ wind chill. Could only take it for about 15 minutes before fingers went numb. Did drop a convertor bolt and it found it's way into the bell housing and behind the torque convertor. Didn't think I'd ever fish it out, last resort would be pulling the motor forward or dropping the tranny. Thank God I was able to hook it after many trys. Well got the motor in fine worked out the bugs, but still had a slight drivability issue and needed to change the in tank fuel pump. Ya, "Merry Christmas to Me..."
So last week as I was setting up for the next kitchen job, I had a meeting with some subs and the customer. Their young son kept trying to interupt us as we talked. His mother said, "What !we're talking, don't interupt", But, but Bob's car just slid dpwn the driveway and hit the wall. The house is on a decent sized hill with a huge circular drive. When I pulled up, the Caravan actually slid, but thought I would only have trouble when it came time to negociate that slippery side when leaving. Well it decided to take an unmanned sleigh ride 80 ft down the hill all the time the front wheel (turned out of coarse) bounced along the wall. At first glance from the house, I thought that I would be calling AAA. The body damage was minor and thought I escaped a major wreck. Well the front end took a beating. As it turns out the strut is bent, wheel and tire damaged, tie rod bent and the steering rack damaged. Almost $3500 damage. I could have at least gone along for such an expensive sleigh ride. Well no one was hurt and it could have been way worse. Good thing the truck is back in service or I'd be looking for snow shoes.
So I see that everyone else has had quite a bit going on.
Paul: I'm so happy to hear that everything is fine, and congrats on the new addition to your family. You know, you're supposed to sneak "trains" on a little at a time... Enjoy all that company during a joyous time.
Philip: I'm glad your wife is doing so much better, maybe by Christmas she can really be up and about and enjoy the special day more comfortably. Too bad for all those CP woes. I had to ditch the XP Home and use Pro, just too many users doing and going too many places. Of course now I almost have it to myself, the girls love their G4 I Books.
Colby: So how did the meet go. Must have missed something here. When you first said you had the meet, Iwas hoping it was an indoor one. Of coarse there's plenty of your friends here that would help chop the ice for you.....Long, long ago in a gal...(sounds like an intro to that movie) I was a water safety instuctor for Navy aircrew. Before that, we never knew if we would get dumped in the pool regardless of weather, later it was my turn to be a bad guy and watch everyone else flounder...
Ryan: I hope there's enough of those tasty cookies to go around. I've actually been folowing your progress on that engine facility. It is coming out fantastic, great pics too. Did you ever settle on any lighting of the pits? Hpoe you had a good time at the Moose lodge.
Dick: I guess the Steaming Tender was as great as always. Great company for lunch this time around. Wish I could get up that way more often. A few fellow club members make it out there quite often when going to see Bob at Tucker's. I hear he may be trying to streamline some of that packed store.. probably only wishful thinking, though. So have you got yourself dug out of this mess. You got pummeled with the white stuff out your way much worse than south of Boston. I love that Atlantic salmon, I could have it a few times a week.
Ed: Oh, did I think of you in "Paradise" these past few weeks. Sitting here, grumbling and jeolous... kinda wishing I was still in So. Ca., Nah, I do like the seasons here. Maybe we need to keep the pressure on about that layout.
Jerry, GARRY, RT: Sounds like you're settled into the Holiday mode. I wish I could say the same. Still lots to do and can't seem to get in gear.
Jim: Well at least I still see you're on that quest for the grain train. A nice retreat from the w**k schedule...
Jeff: Good to see that you're toughing it out and doing OK. Good thing it hasn't hurt your shutter finger. Some of the later pics of your new stuff look good w/ the new camera.
inch: glad you you could ride out some of that crazy weather or have the miss down your way. Some places got clobbered.
JR: Nice to see you are still making some decent progress on the restorations. I'll tell you, I was thinking about your nice warm shop as I was wrenching on that Dodge 5.2. Cargo vans are always fun for motor swap. Never minded much w/ the older ones, used to pull it out the passenger door. Pulling the bumper and core support to come out the front is the pits. Does run like a new truck though- it was worth it. Dodge stopped production in 04 and no one seems to want to let them go. Plenty of V6 1/2 ton 1500s, but they won't do the job. Need that 5.2 V8, 727 in a 3/4 ton.
phiinrunt: Don't worry much about the DW mud. As long as it is a major brand (I tend to like USG-Green lid). As long as it isn't real old or allowed to freeze, most any brand will do fine. The best news is not having to deal with any of it..period. Don't overlook the use of the Durbond 90. It is great for use or even an additive to mud for faster drying. For mudding DW, I use it for all first coats and corner beads. Then mud w/ the green lid.
Sue: Hope all is well with you and Larry these days. Enjoy that time off and together I hope.
Duke: Nice MOW shots you got there.
Derrick: It's a real tough time for the move. Know what you're going through, I was all over the place as a youngster. Went to 9 different schools for the 12 years to graduation. Kinda got to see most of the country though...
Fergie: Great to have you on that ? dry land. Good thing that tongue didn't stay stuck...
Rob: Hope the wife takes the "pulled over models" in stride after that nightmare she went through getting home that night.
der: Hope that snow doesn't keep you away from the trains too long. Sounds like you need a softer cake. Did you bite into a Kadee coupler or something?
Lee: Some nice sizable models there. Good thing you have the space. Sounds like you could use 1/2 of it for the port alone.
Jonathan: Too bad to hear those troubles w/ the Saab. Did some of those problems exist before the accident? You definitly have a bent strut and possible rack damage for those steering issues. I don't see how the clutch slave cylinder would have been affected. Check it for leaks, and maybe you can add fluid and bleed it to buy some time. The wiper troubles could all stem from a short from the accident. Do the front turn signals work OK? Many times a wire can get damaged in a crash and can affect the "multi-function" switch that controls turn signal, headlight dim, wiper/washer and cruise on some. You could have even damaged the switch during the accident. Try wiggling the arm and moving through all funtions as you try the wipers. Are you shure you checked all the fuses and relays? Goo luck w/ it and hope the weather holds.
There's so many others I know I've missed, and I'll check in later.
This is a very trying time of the year for me and my family. This 1st Christmas without April is real tough. I really didn't even want to deal w/ all the decorations and the tree, but knew I had to do it for the kids. I was dragging my feet big time, and last week when I came home there was a tree on the porch. Apparently my daughter's boyfriend bought it and left it for us. My wife always enjoyed the tree over any other decoration, with the possible exception of the carollers and the winter skating scene I did every year. That's on hold 'til next year- just couldn't do that- just too hard. So the tree is up and there are about 1600 lights on it. 2 cords to a power strip- she always loved the more lights the better.
The hardest thing was having my youngest daughter come home from UMass, Amherst and see her mother's stocking missing. The holiday will be bitter/ sweet. We will get through it. The traditional trip to NJ to the inlaws is on as usual. Thanksgiving there wasn't as bad as I thought. Hopefully Christmas can be OK also.
I really want to give my thanks to all of you who have been so supportive to me and my family over these past 8 months of what otherwise could have been real Helll for me. Support from strangers who I have never met and only have the common bond of comraderie through this great hobby has meant a lot. You were only a keyboard away.
Thank you all so much from the bottom of my heart. I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and wonderful and safe holiday.

I'm sitting here and having a good laugh at you guys talking about the cold. I'll trade with you anytime. With the windchill it is -38 c this morning and at that temp C and F is almost the same. Time to put the longjohns on. How would you like them Jeff???
Well I think i'm over the hump with the cold. Everything seems to be working better today. Coughing is almost gone and what there is doesn't seem to be tearing you apart. Head is still somewhat conjested but it is improved. Thank Goodness I really felt tough for awhile. Thanks for all the good wishes.
PAUL: So glad to hear that the baby is coming along fine. What a wonderful Christmas Present for all of you.
GARRY: I really like your grain elevator. I plan on one as a background structure just off my staging yards.
PHIL: If you take that nap, be sure to get up in time to make supper.
Well I'm really glad I work inside, can't imagine having to spend the day outside trying to accomplish tasks in this weather. However my oldest Son is a Instrumentation Tech and Electrician and works in the Natural Gas fields north of Grande Prairie Alberta, which is 250 miles northwest of Edmonton or 750 miles from here. All are remote sites but at least most of his work is in the compressor stations which are quite warm because of the 12 cylinder diesel engines running and doing the compressing. But it is very lonely work, most of the time he is by himself with only a few wolves watching. And he does all this to keep those model railroaders in the states and southern Canada nice and warm in their train rooms. Great Guy Eh ???
Well I better get back to the job at hand. One more shift after this and then off for a week.
Prayers and blessings for those in need.
Keep smiling it looks good on you.

Philip,
Actually the Caravan is in such (or was) unbelievable shape for a '98 Sport, I still have the collision w/ only a $500 deductable. The insurance adjuster didn't even believe the condition and wondered when it was repainted. It's a Canadian model and came with a special color for the package. So the financial burden isn't too bad. Now if only I can can a paint match...

Good to hear that it's not going to cost you an arm and a leg! Special order paint is always tough to match though.

This facility has the most rail traffic. To the west is a glass recycling yard and to the north is an oil terminal and to the south is a steel mill. As far as small businesses that are serviced by rail this area is very well populated. If you want to model a congested switching operation on your layout this would be the zip code for ideas.

This facility services rail and truck. The diagonal sidewalk from the silos to the water is the connection points for the freighters. The freighters drop off the bulk cement and this facility transfers it to the rail cars and the trucks. The rails travel right through the bottom of the silos and are loaded inside. The piles to the north are used in road improvement and building.

This was a huge facility in the days of steam {Sitting on the former L.S&M.S. (NYC) right of way}. The best I can find is they processed limestone from the local quarry here to be shipped by rail to make bulk cement. The quarry had it's own rail service.

This facility had a huge rail interface when I was stationed at the CG station you can see just west of the railroad bridge. 2 things use to go over that bridge; AMTRAK and cement hoppers. The 2 silos to the NW handled the rail traffic. If you look close you can still see the spurs that entered them.
Hey Guys.
well it's the Eve of Chirstmass Eve is anyone excited?
Our Christmass tree is up and the train is running, Yesterday My Mom, me, little brother, Nana and Papa went to Portland to do some last minute shopping. and to return a pair of goggles that don't fit me. Half way do to Portland my mom realized that she didn't have the goggles. We did a little shopping (stopped at one store) thenstopped at IHop had lunch. while eating my Papa remembered that the was a railroad depo in Hiram that a guy had bought and turned into a railroad measum complete with a Maine Central Caboos and had a monster layout in side the depo that the guy who owned the place built and opens to the public very december. My Papa saw it on "Bill Green's Maine" (from the local news station). So we went there and I was in semi-Heaven the layout was not quite finished. the track was down and building were in place but the ground was not finished. I talked with the guy and asked him about the layout. The layout is wired with standard DC, it's got a double mainline with cross overs and a huge yard that's not wired up yet, there are 3 smaller layout's around the room and one wall is full of old radios, scaners, railroad launters, and TV. on the other side there are display shevels and one shelf had a Big Boy (BTW 80% of the model trains were in HO) a Pennsy 2-8-8-2, a Souther Pacific cab forward (can't remember what the name is but reconized the cab setup.) a Northen type engine, numerous diesels and steam engines and at least 5-6... 4-4-0s most of the locos were either Maine Central, Boston and Maine, or Bangor and Aroostook, but ther was a Southern Pacific Daylight, NYC Streamlined Hudson (Century Limited), NW J class, K-4 Pacific, and a couple MEC steamers.
While talking with the guys I asked him if there were any hobby shops around. he said there was one 15-20 min./ away in Kezar Falls. called Maine Trains ( www.mainetrains.net ) specializing in HO and N but had all scales. After taking a look inside the caboos w went to Maine Trains and I was blown away at how much stuff there was just on the first floor! The owner of the shop runs it out of him own home and has the shop on 2 floors. New and Used, lionel, ect. His own layout is part of the shop. I talked with the guy and he was very nice, knowedgeable model railroader, and when I showed him my GFMRRC membership car he told me that I will get 10% off any purchase. Right before we left I saw a Santa Fe Streamline Observation car. with a hole at the very end of the car so if someone wanted to add an EOTL (end of train light). It was used and is good condiction. it was 10$ and I got it for 8$. he took taxe off as well. (my dad said that we both beifitted from that transaction). (BTW the ower's dogs [he has 2 of them] are the door greeters)
Over all I had a great time. but my brother was bored the instant he enterd both buildings. But hey he does not know the joy of model trains and likely never will, his loss I gess.
Take care everyone
over and out.
Good evening folks. We are expecting rain and wind for tomorrow. It will probably do away with all our snow.
Wolfgang: We've had to use the treadmill all week as the gravel road past our place has been too dangerous to try to walk. Today, in the thaw, it was better, so I got the first real walk in a week!
Paul: Open a WORD document. At each comment in the Diner you want to print, select, and copy (I use Control c) In the WORD doc. Paste in the comment. (I use Control v) When all the pasting is done, gussy up the document the way you want it and Print. (Control P, I think, but I've not used that.)
BobK...the tooth broke on a soft dessert! (I guess it fractured on something else and fell out in its own good time (if there is such a thing for a tooth )
Got a bit more of the blue desert on the upper level covered over. With family commitments over the next week, I may not get much more done before the year turns, but I think the resolution has been pretty much kept. We'll see just how much I can squeeze in before we sing Aul Lang Sine.
Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.

refill, please & thank you.
Built a fire in the cabin to protect the pipes. Temp will drop to 27 tonight, nothing compared to what many of you are facing. LOTS of rain last night, so our storage tanks are once again topped off...YES! Exhausted tonight, so will have my coffee in a corner booth incase I drift off.
