Actually Der...

It was a random thing. I would love to have Lisa with me but by her own admission, not mine, she would be a disaster in the making if she had gone anywhere near a ski hill. Remember this is the woman who snapped her ankle at the foot of the driveway 10 years ago the week before Christmas. This is also the woman who took up Extreme Stair Surfing last summer when I was in the Arctic. All she used was a "sobeys" bag at the top of the basement stairs to propel her head 1st into the basement resulting in two broken wrists. If I was going to take my beloved skiing I'd insure her for nothing less than $5 Million. We are thinking about a trip this spring but  will wait and see how her Mom fairs Chemo and Radiation.

Well nothing much else on the go except maybe Kidney Stones...

Tomorrow I start my Rescue Specialist Recert.

And hopefully I'll get some work on the MR this next few weeks.

Bow [bow] PC congratulations on the chili cook-off! Is the recipe to follow? Whistling [:-^]

And give away all my secrets!

It's simple really.....just double up on the meat and make it spicy hot sausage (I use Bob Evans brand) instead of ground beef.  Use fresh ground peppers to taste (green chilis, cayenne, habanero, & jalapeno), fire roasted tomatoes (fire roasted makes all the difference in the world - diced and crushed), 12oz of water (for a single batch), and chopped red onions (just a little - a handful or so).  A dash or two of course salt (I like Carroll Shelby's brand - comes with the seasoning, salt, and flour), chili seasoning, and substitute the mesa flour in the kit for some better quality mesa flour.  Throw in some Bush's Best brand dark red kidney beans (if you like them, or you can skip them) and simmer for about 8-10 hours.  When it's all said and done you're ready to tastefully roast your tastebuds off in style!

Happy?  Now the cats outta the bag! Wink [;)]

Ryan, Well I thought it would be nice to have the layout posted on http://www.trainweb.org/ but http://www.braveone.com/ will work just as well.  I thought about Google, but too much work, wanted something easy to update.  It's not out there to impress anyone, just to let friends and family see what I'm up to.

PC, congrats on the chili, maybe one day we can square off, just your #1 chili and my #1 chili, LOL.

I stopped at the LHS today on the way home from work and picked up "Weathered Tie" brown and a movie theater for Fox Creek.  I didn't like all the bling that came with the Walther's kit, it was cool, but would be out of place with the DPM buildings and stuff.  The LHS is stocking up for RailFest 2008 at Lakeland collage this March.  If anyone finds themselves stuck in NE Ohio it's a great show.

Hey all. Nice pics those that posted, I skimmed. Look like a lot of good news. Hate the fog today thought. Heard the Bus radio, the drivers couldn't see US at the corners. let alone the road.

Happy to report that a fried of mine's photo on the NWR with my engine took gold at the CID something, he said. He sure is a whizz at the shutter.

I've been out of pocket from the Internet since Friday. We went on a day trip to Seagrove, NC on Saturday and toured the pottery center and 5 other pottery shops around the area. Great collections of handmade pottery, we bought some new coffee cups and a few pots too! Ate lunch at the Jug Town Café in Asheboro, NC and drove home. I probably pushed myself too much with all the walking around and visiting all the pottery shops on Saturday. I also took some photos with my new camera, and will try to post a few of those once I set up the new imaging software on the computer.

Dead [xx(] The sore throat did not get any better however, and I went back to the doctor this morning, got some more medicine (cough syrup with codeine) and hopefully I will be able to sleep better and start to see some improvement soon.

Lee if it's not too late, how about "The LS&W - You build it - we ship it!" Nice deal on those portable heaters from HD, I also heard they cut about 500 employees from their home office in Atlanta due to slipping sales in January and stock price falling 30% in the past year. As far as brass goes, I have a similar stack that would be available to anyone too!

Lee sorry about the HTML stuff, if you want to learn how to code there is a free shareware software called HTMLKit ( http://www.htmlkit.com/ ) that you can install and build your own sites. What you could do is make the files in Front Page like you want to, and then open them up in HTMLKit and rename them the file format they want you to use. *.htm, or whatever. Also, if you want a free hosting service GooglePages will allow you to build one, it is basic, free, but has no web rings or anything like that, you just need to set up Google mail email account (free) and you are ready to roll. Send me a PM or email if you want more help with the site.

CN Charlie thanks for the input on the menus, and with feeling better! Thumbs Up [tup]

Mike I like that "scientist" joke, going to have to remember that one! Laugh [(-D]

Der John sounds like you continue progress with the ballasting, and thanks note on feeling better! Your ballasting technique is very similar to the way I do it in HO!

GMT, glad you liked Friday's menu! Working on a new one for tomorrow!  Looking forward to seeing the progress on the vents and the water tower too!

Garry nice pic of the layout! Sorry for missing the past few days menu's, been out of pocket and not on the Internet either,  just no energy the past few days. Glad you liked the NP menu, and yes, another transcontinental train from the past. Good luck with the tests at the clinic! Angel [angel]

Jerry I'll be putting together another menu soon! I've been behind all day with going to the doc this morning! Mornin, just coffee for now Zoe

Dense for advisory for here this morning and it's still thick as pea soup, even with temps now 47, high today 59, with rain and a chance of thunderstorms later. Bout the same for tomorrow and Wed's forecast, mid 20's, with a chance for snow.

#3 SIL is staying with us now, till he finds someplace. The company he works for is transferring him to Terre Haute, Jamie n the kids are still staying in Girard for awhile.

#2 son works midnights and is one bedroom, a SIL in another working days in the other and grandkids all day, so we've got bodies coming n going at all hours now.

Last nights game was one of the best ones in the last few years. I didn't care which team won, I was hoping for a good, close game and we got it.

PC,, congrads on 1'st place in chili n great news on the wife, getting to drive and taking an interest in the layout.

MITCH,, good news on mom n dad improvements.

PAUL,, glad to hear some good news from down yur way too.

We'll keep ya'll and anyone I missed in our thoughts

Joke for the day

Scientist gets on a train to go to New York. His cabin also has a poor farmer in it. To pass the time the scientist decides to play a game with the guy.
"I will ask you a question and if you get it wrong, you have to pay me one dollar. Then you ask me a question, and if I get it wrong, you get ten dollars. You ask me a question first." The farmer thinks for a while.
"I know. What has three legs, takes ten hours to climb up a palm tree, and ten seconds to get back down?" The scientist is confused and thinks long and hard about the question. Finally, the train ride is coming to an end. As it pulls into the station, the scientist takes out ten dollars and gives it to the farmer.
"I don''t know. What has three legs, takes ten hours to get up a palm tree and ten seconds to get back down?"
The farmer takes the ten dollars and puts it into his pocket. He then takes out one dollar and hands it to the scientist.
"I don''t know."

Need to get this posted I guess, I've been since 4am doing it. Hope ya'll has a gooden n stay safe

Good morning everyone.

I didn't intend to offend anyone with my comments about my "former web host" for my web site.  It would have been nice if they told me about their strict anti-Microsoft/Netscape policy before I submitted a rather lengthy web site plan and content resume before I was given an account. Matter of fact it I highly recommend visiting his web site if you're a novice like me, his step by step interactive tutorials on how to use Microsoft software to design and upload my web page to his server was extremely helpful.

My new site can be found at: lswrailroad.bravehost.com

Mitch, The UAW hall has 4-5 train shows each year, but it's predominantly large scale train stuff. The only cool thing is once in a blue moon you find the guy dumping all his HO/N scale stuff because he is switching to O/S gage. I'm considering going to the Massillon show and/or the Medina show this spring, do you have any insight to share?

Jeff, I do like your lighting.  The 3 story building with the illuminated individual floors was very cool and adds a high class of detail to your layout.

Colby,  I think it's a GIANT undertaking not to hear about the Super bowl.

   Howdy all.

Good to see an NFC team win the bowl, even if all I saw was the last 19 seconds. Never cared for the AFC. Ce[t for the Steelers. They shoulda been NFC.  Congratulations to all of you Giant fans. Glad to see them take it.

Got an e-add for Factory Direct Trains tonight, they have a BLI SD9 in Penn Central black, DC sound equipped, lots of neat sounds, for 119$. Seriously thinking about it. I don't have a sound loco, and I just don't know if it's a good way to go or not. Decisions decisions.

Picked up the final paint for the new bedroom, sky blue for the upper half of the walls, white wainscotting for the bottom. The Light Keepers house at White Fish Point has that arrangement in a couple of rooms, IIRC, different colors, but a classy look. We'll give it a try.

Silverspike- I hear what your'e saying about the taxes. Our City Building isn't taking out the correct amount for our county tax, we've told them, but they are too stupid to figure it out. Looks like we're going to need to set about 5 bucks a pay aside to cover it next year. I hate paying state and county taxes, especially when I drive around this part of the state. Indianapolis doesn't even know we exist, except when they need more money.

der- You are absolutely right, if you don't have fun at work, or whatever it is, you might as well not do it.

Paul- That Sgt Shultz stuff- well,I guess it'll work this time. I suppose we get the weather we get, and blaming it on you or Jim or the boys up north is silly. But with Indiana being known as "The Weather Paradise of the Midwest", it's hard to understand, sometimes!Big Smile [:D]  Sorry to hear about Diannes dad, and Tony. You hang in there. Lara should help out in that area. Sounds like she's a doll.

pcarrell- That looks like award winning chili to me. Now these other guys can only sample it virtually, but I can drive down there and meet you somewhere! I'll be the one with the truck full of crackers!

JeffreyW- I really like the night shots, the yellow light looks warm and just "right". And that trailer is good looking too. I was real glad, living in east central Indiana, to see both NuComp- just up the road from me,BTW, and City Classics come out with REAL Hoosier Homesteads. Add the trailers to a few Rix houses and it looks like 85% of the towns around here.

Speaking of old TV, (Sgt Shultz) one of my young friends-he's 35, has recently discovered McHale's Navy on DVD. He showed us an interview with Tim Conway the other night, it was pretty funny. I never knew he served in the Army. From the way he describes his hitch, it's lucky we still have one.

Got a couple of pics of NS units on Sat, a spartan cab SD70 with a short trains of PS-2 hoppers for the cement plant in Portland, then 2 C40W's parked by the Anderson's Grain Terminal in Dunkirk. I was hoping to see the GATX unit again in better light, but haven't gotten lucky yet.

Better get going, I'm just hoping that the lights stay on tonight.

Evening folks-just some coffee in my usual mug.

Going to try to make it to bed much earlier tonight to make up for last night. Zzz [zzz]

Update on Mom & Dad-both are doing better. Dad's congestion has cleared up a little, but it'll take a little time to clear up completely. Mom is doing much better also. The docs said there's a small blood clot in her leg, & they feel a small part of it broke off & went into her lung, causing her light headedness the other day. They're going to try medication to try to break it up, & still keeping an eye on her EKG. She's in the cardiac care unit of this hospital in Canton-one I hadn't been in since I was there myself as a patient at the age of 2 yrs (I was hydrocephalic when I was born-they had to put a shunt in my head to drain fluid, & as far as I know, it's still doing the job after 40 yrs!) This hospital is big & laid out, & she has her own room at the end of the hall. HDTV, you name it. When I went to see her earlier, she was watching a "Murder She Wrote" marathon, eating dinner, & going thru her papers & writing checks to pay bills for me to mail. She's definitely improved, compared to this past Friday. Thanks 1000x for the thoughts & prayers folks-they're very much appreciated & keep them coming! Angel [angel]

Cape Jim & Jerry-the bookcase looks ok & does the job so far-but a good argument for "scratchbuilding" another one-sheez! I need more as I still have a lot of books at Mom & Dad's in the attic I need to bring over. (yeah, I'm a "reader"-I've worked in a library for almost 26 yrs. LOL!) But I'd rather save my carpentry "skills" Whistling [:-^] for the future benchwork of the HVS!  I'm more into "functionality" than "asthetics". (My art teacher in high school's rant was "trite" stuff!)

Rob-thanks for your thoughts for Mom & Dad-talked to my aunt last night (Mom's 2nd to youngest sis & shares my b/day) in Douglasville GA while I was fighting the bookcase. I've never been down to see her yet, but my Mom flew down in '99 (her 1st plane trip & visit to her sis's house EVER since my aunt got married in 1964-My aunt has lived in either CA (1964-1973) & GA (1973-) so she'd never had the chance to visit up till then. (what happened on the plane trip down was quite funny-hopefully I'll post in the future!)

Phillip-your chili looks quite tasty-heavily hot & spicy? That's the way I like it-Dawn is the 1st one to make it that way since in high school days when a buddy of mine's Mom used to make it, & that kinda leads into....

Lee-my bud lived in Garfield Heights, & back in the 80's his Mom & Stepdad ran a restaurant at E.30th & St.Clair called "Basha's Paden Place." I was never there, but they had a place at Atwood Lake down here, where I met them-I could never get enough of his Mom's cooking! Dinner [dinner] You're right on not being far-an hour to the second almost drive-I used to faithfully hit the big old record show at the Autoworkers Hall on Chevrolet Blvd 2x times a year until the promoter quit doing it-I got a lot of classic 45's, both country & early R&R from there.

Jeff-I know you recently posted somewhere the age of your trailer, but I forget exactly, but I was impressed due to the age of it & still going strong! (Dawn's was a '71, & literally falling apart!)

(Looks at clock) I better hit the sack folks-if I missed anyone, apologies-Thanks for the coffee-Nite All!

Evening, Janie. Nothing for me, thanks - just stopping by on the way home.

Ah, Jeff - I see you posted that it's a City Classics - I figured either that or Nucomp (the folks who sell the entire trailer parks). Thanks for clearing it up.

Lee, that was a good deal you got on the heater. Thumbs Up [tup] Of course, per Murphy's Law, you have pretty much guaranteed a nicer winter in your area, right? Wink [;)] But that heater should still work fine next winter if it does warm up. If it's any consolation, a good text editor might be able to open your website's htm(l) pages and do a search and replace for the changes. The good thing when you get done will be that more users will be able to view your pages if it's written and checked out with both Firefox and Explorer. Microsoft sometimes uses their own quirky ways instead of across the board industry standards (like W3C). You might ask the website hosting company if they have some utility programs that will help with getting the pages like they want them. Many websites provide them (basic ones) for free.

Rob, I wish you lived closer - my buddy Mark was saying tonight that he'd like to sell some of his hay bales (I think he has the 'square' ones, but I might be off on that). Doubt that they'd be such a bargain if you had to drive all the way up here to get them, though.Sigh [sigh]

Several SuperBowl commercials I liked tonight - especially the one with the gal dancing with all the lizards (it was for some sports water drink) - hilarious! (You can tell what I go to a SB party to watch...)Wink [;)] My condolences to all the Patriots fans here.

Misting/drizzly here tonight, so my eastern neighbors - expect it tomorrow or Tuesday.

Got to get ready for bed. See everyone tomorrow. Prayers for those in need of healing, strength, or comfort.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

***JR, the NY GIANTS earned it. Congrats to them.

***Jim, the Inlaws are doing as well as one would expect. MIL is still NUTS and that is only going to get worse over time. Barbara and I are just trying to figure out how to survive these days and not lose the farm. Sigh [sigh]

Need to hit the easel awhile. Have a good night all.

Hey, get this!  You're not going to believe it!  I can't!

I actually WON the chili cookoff today!  Thats right, First Place!

There were 10 chili's there, ranging from a white bean chicken chili to one that had large chunks of peppers in it.  Some of them were better then mine I thought.  But when the votes were tallied, mine came out with the most votes!

Here, I brought in whats left of it so you all can sample it!

Just out of curiosity, why wouldn't she wait until she was moving to get the dog, if you don't really want another one?

She's 17 and wants to go to a local college.  It could be a while.

That's my point entirely.

You're probably right, but I'm an old softie sometimes....what can I say?

Shame on you!  You don't give a newbi a job like that.  You'll lose them in a heartbeat!  You put a throttle in their hands!

The wife is getting around good!  Today is the last day she has to wear the imobilizer and tomorrow she can drive for the first time in several months.  She's pretty stoked about that!  The docs are alreadty talking about the next surgery.  It'll be soon I think.

Good Super Bowl folks!  It's just turned half time, so I'll get this written, and see what happens after that!

Mitch:  Sorry to hear about your Mom's setback.  Hope they get it sorted soon.Angel [angel]

Jeff: That trailer looks really used! Great weathering job!

That trailer is similar to the one I live in. The model is of a forty footer, mine is a twenty-five footer. The builder was Nashua. The skin is all heavy aircraft aluminum.
...which explains how you are to so easily make it into a Faraday cage for the linghtnig.  Is that a refinement you are going to model?  It would make an awesome SFX!

Fergie:

...In ascending order of priority?  Can't be that skinning is more important than trains, so we'll bury this list.Whistling [:-^]

Jerry:

I found a cunk of plastic from a "for sale" sign I picked up at Wllyworld about a year ago so I decided to use Plastic...
...way to go!  I just love getting freebies like that. I've got a sort of "standing order" at the local gas station for the ads they put on top of the pumps. Nice styrene; goes in the garbage otherwise.  I haven't tried scraping off the printing, but figure a single razor blade ( the kind with a backing strip) should do the trick.

Lee:  That sucks about the HTM.  I thought Microsoft and Netscape didn't get on so well themselves.  I've heard good stable things about Firefox, but really am out of my depth there.

Johnboy:  The ballasting is done for now.  Just repair work, cosmetic touch ups of places I was a bit sloppy with in earlier applications. I'd like to encourage you to give it a try, and I'll post the method that works for me.  In typing some more I've found I've rambled on, so I'll just introduce the kit of tools for now.

So, here's the kit I've found works.  The order of use reads left to right.

That's the real stone ballast, then the top from a detergent bottle to hold the bit I'm using, and a small spoon (when did Dairy Queen last use red spoons? I've had that one for well over 20 years!) The spoon's to load ballast onto the green folded card, for dumping, trailing or drizzling onto the track and shoulders.

The yellow handled brush is just wide enough to fit between my N Scale rails.  It's stiff, not soft, and that's key for scrubbing the ballast down in between the ties, especially at turnouts.

Missing from the photo, because I've only just thought of it, is the bottle of clipper oil and a small paint brush with which I apply oil to the turnouts' closure rails and throwbar so nothing gets glued shut.

The makeup brush is very soft, and settles the ballast down into the final shape of the shoulder nice and smoothly.

The India ink goes in the spray bottle (2 drops).  This instantly weathers the ballast. Fergie gave us that tip.Thumbs Up [tup]

The rubbing alcohol goes in the spray bottle, about 20% by volume, and of course water is the 80%.  The spray bottle gives a fine drenching mist with NO BLOBS.  That's very important IMHO, as the blobs act like bombs on the dry ballast.  Worth testing out in the store if possible.  I found this one while cleaning my desk a couple of weeks ago, shoved behind the monitor!  It's a really good one.

I glue everything down with dilute white glue.  I know the books say 50-50, but I find a much more dilute mix soaks in faster, and holds just as well.  There are almost no white globs at a weaker dilution too, I've found.  The small container with the eye dropper is what I use for dosing out the glue mix, refilling as required.  The eyedropper is a must for gentle application, avoiding gushes of glue that can happen with pouring the stuff.

Next time I'm in I'll get he step by step photos up.  Photobucket freaked at the 11 I tried to upload.  So bear with me.

Paul:  Sorry to hear about Dianne's father.  We'll be praying, and as you sa, there's things he can do too!Angel [angel]

Kris is watching a movie, so the game will have to be grabbed at ad time!  Last time she reported there was no change from the 7-3 (or 3-7 depending on your bias) from ½ time.

all, and God Bless.  Prayers for al in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel [angel]

Evening Gang:

Lee: As Winnie The Poo would say, " Oh, bother. " Seems like there are folks out there that like to make yhings hard for everyone else.

Not much since this afternoon. I finished with Mary Ann's container. I then got the batteries out of the F-250 and we went into town to get lunch and to the Tractor Supply Store to get a couple of battires. After I put them in the truck started up right away. It's an 84 with 277,000+ miles on it. Mary Ann won't let me replace it. She likes old junkey things. I guess that's why she keeps me around.

Dianne's father had a heart attack. They put in a stint to clear one blockage. He's going home in a couple of days. Now he needs to quite smoking and loose some weight. Unfortunatly he doesn't do what he needs to. I'd like to take him to see Tony. Maybe that would shake him up.

Well it's time to head for bed. Of course first Daisy the Dog needs to go out.

OH NO!! TOP and on SB night. Well I'll have to do dishes for a month.

Good Night All

Well I hit a minor set back in my new web site......

The host for my web site is an anti-Microsoft and anti-Netscape so they don't believe in HTML, but they do believe in HTM. So the web page I designed won't work unless I discard my Microsoft Enterprise 2007 Front Page software and revert to an application of their choice (Firefox, Unix, & Linux).  Their reasoning is: Microsoft and Netscape are "dominating the market".

Isn't that a pain in the EOT!

Whoa, Janie, I'd better get in before all the seats are taken! Is everyone coming here to watch the SuperBowl game? And when did you get that widescreen TV by the back booths? Oh, just renting it to 'beef up' sales today. Okay, makes sense. I'll have a Dr. Pepper to go, please. Thanks!

Hey, OzJim - welcome back! Hope your layout has been coming along. How much have you been able to get finished so far?

Jeff, I like that li'l shack - got some nice character to it! Thumbs Up [tup] Whose trailer do you have there - a Novacomp? I like it.Smile [:)]

Johnboy, thanks for the link to that Mainstreet Illinois site. Saved their PDFs to look at later. Smile [:)]

Ed, (no pun intended - well, maybe...) that's a lot of tamales! How big is your town (and surrounding residents)?

Garry, Angel [angel]Angel [angel] that your tests and all will go smoothly at the hospital. Will they be keeping you overnight, or just if they find anything?

Dick, while some of those 'courting ideas' are interesting, I don't know her name yet Shock [:O] (durn it, they don't have name plates by the window tellers' places like some other banks do). I could cause some talk if I called up and asked who works at that window...Whistling [:-^]Whistling [:-^]

Rob, you're on my personal prayer list - sounds like it's been less than fun lately for you & the wife. Are your wife's parents doing okay?

Mitch, sounds like your Dad and Mom both need to be on the list, as well. Not to worry about the bookcase not looking like Martha-with-dozens-of-assistants-doing-the-real-work-Stewart. Her canned approach to home decor sticks in my craw, so to speak. (A little former art teacher rant there...)

Well, got to get to the SB party now. I'll be back later tonight, I figure, with my reviews of the commercials (the real reason I watch!). Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau
