Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Yup, it was another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  A chilly (for Fran, that is) 56º when we headed out to the orange grove at dark-thirty.  But the sun came out and it warmed up to maybe mid 70's by the afternoon.  If it were like this all year round, I'd be a lot happier here.  As it is, I'm trying to enjoy these days while they're here.

Sold off 3 more tons of oranges this morning.  That's about it for the time being.  There's still a ton (more, actually) of fruit left on the trees.  Even the variety that they picked, they left a lot of fruit that still needs a few more weeks to ripen.  But this way the trees that were heaviest with fruit have been relieved of the majority of the weight.

After three straight days of work out at the grove, even Fran was feeling tired.  She took a Zzz [zzz]  nap with me this afternoon, which is something she normally doesn't do.

Dessert tonight is Key Lime pie.  It was last night too, but I forgot to mention it.  We have to do something with the limes that we're starting to harvest.

JR:  Do we have an appropriate holiday coming up for the Fiesta Cookoff ?
How about "Cinco de Mayo"?  Maybe too far off, huh?  We could go with "San Jacinto Day" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Jacinto_Day ), April 21st.  But that might limit us to "Texas Style" chili, with no beans. And that would leave me out.  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Jerry:  ...what will they do with the oranges they are picking..eating,juice?
These that they pickled the last couple of days will be sold as eating oranges.  I suppose some that don't measure up (not sufficiently blemish free) will wind up getting juiced.

Garry - nice looking locomotive.  But I think that cone shaped smoke box cover would take some getting used to.

Rob:  Power co. came back this morning so I opened the inner gate so they could trim back the old pine tree practically leaning on transformer/pole. Should be no more shorts caused from wind storms blowing branches into the wires.
We had to have a palm tree (coconut palm) cut down in the front yard a year or so ago because it was getting into the lines.

That's about it from down here this evening.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

I'll add one more comment regarding the NC&StL 4-8-4's.  When they were approaching grade crossings they were whistleing Dixie. Whistling [:-^]

Coffee in a  mug and an order of  BROILED FISH, Lemon Butter Sauce, Cole Slaw, and String Beans. Thanks!

Power co. came back this morning so I opened the inner gate so they could trim back the old pine tree practically leaning on transformer/pole. Should be no more shorts caused from wind storms blowing branches into the wires. Only took about 10 years for them to get around to it. Smile [:)]Thumbs Up [tup]

This locomotive is in a city park in Nashville. It's NC&StL 4-8-4. This type of locomotive was not called a "Northern" on the NC&StL Instead, they called it a "Dixie". It's vanderbilt tender is similar to Bowser's tender that Bowser had on its freelanced 4-8-4 model. The "Dixie" had a cone shaped smoke box cover looking somewhat like the smokebox covers on SP "Daylight locomotves. I'm glad this engine is preserved. I took the pictures Monday in the rain.

Hello everybody...

Well, as I said, the storms were severe. A tornado touched down about five miles from here. It blew the roof off a house and onto a road. People inside the house escaped without injury. The main power transmssion line for the county was knocked out for about twelve hours. It was a little rough on barns and other farm structures.

Inch That's a great story. It backs up the saying that old age and treachary beat youth and vigor.

Not much going on. Mary Ann and I are waiting for John and Dianne to come by. We're going in to see the baby's doctor and see little Lara, of course. We did the usual chasing in town this morning and then she helped me get the two tractors and dump trailer moved across the creek. When we get back if it's not too late I'll go over and start hauling the dirt.

Well I guess I'll head out and see what else is going on before the kids get here.

Mornin,, a story for the day

Wise old man

A wise old gentleman retired and purchased a modest home near a junior high school. He spent the first few weeks of his retirement in peace and contentment. Then a new school year began. The very next afternoon three young boys, full of youthful, after-school enthusiasm, came down his street, beating merrily on every trashcan they encountered. The crashing percussion continued day after day, until finally the wise old man decided it was time to take some action. The next afternoon, he walked out to meet the young percussionists as they banged their way down the street. Stopping them, he said, "You kids are a lot of fun. I like to see you express your exuberance like that. In fact, I used to do the same thing when I was your age. Will you do me a favor? I'll give you each a dollar if you'll promise to come around every day and do your thing." The kids were elated and continued to do a bang-up job on the trashcans. After a few days, the old-timer greeted the kids again, but this time he had a sad smile on his face. "This recession's really putting a big dent in my income," he told them. "From now on, I'll only be able to pay you 50 cents to beat on the cans." The noisemakers were obviously displeased, but they accepted his offer and continued their afternoon ruckus. A few days later, the wily retiree approached them again as they drummed their way down the street. Look," he said, "I haven't received my Social Security check yet, so I'm not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents. Will that be okay?" "A quarter?" the drum leader exclaimed. "If you think we're going to waste our time, beating these cans around for a quarter, you're nuts! No way, dude. We quit!" And the old man enjoyed peace and serenity for the rest of his days.

Todays weather here

Clouds will stick around through the day today with light southwest winds and temperatures topping out in the upper 30's. A few areas of light rain mixed with light snow will move through tonight as temperatures drop below freezing near 27°. The skies stay mostly cloudy on Friday with more areas of rain moving in during the evening and overnight hours. Temperatures will warm up into the upper 40's Friday afternoon before falling near the freezing mark early Saturday morning. Temperatures will be much colder for this weekend than what we dealt with this past week. Look for an overnight low near 12° Saturday night and a daytime high barely into the twenties Sunday afternoon. More sunshine is expected this weekend but it will not be enough to warm us up!

Morning all!  Yup, it's still morning......barely!

Busy, busy morning!

This weather this week is playing havoc with phone lines everywhere.  I guess I should look at it as "job security", huh?  Working in the service department at the phone company seems to always have something to keep you busy, thats for sure!

So hows everyong doing today?  Good I hope!

The new addition to our family (my daughters new dog) is getting into the grove.  She's a good dog, and smart as a whip.  I think she'll be one of the best dogs we've ever had around the house.  Tell ya what, she's big.  She's a horse!  And she seems to like my side of the bed too!

Well, I'd best get busy again......later!

Good morning everyone.

Well we finally got a break from that 50F w/rain and are back at a wonderful 28F and snow.  Yesterday alone we got 1.76" of rain.  I had to scout the head of navigation for potential flood issues and sure enough I found them. The water was so high in the valley that everything was under water except for the block signals.  The Cuyahoga river (in English: Crooked river) was over its banks by several yards.  It appears that the river level increased 24" in 24 hours.  Over the past week we got almost 10" of rain.  I can't complain too much about the 3 minor leaks in my basement.

I found my dream job while I was on patrol yesterday; Remote control locomotive operator.  The former B&O yard in the Cleveland Flats (CSX) is running remote control GP38s to do switching for some of the local industries. If we have some clear weather I might get a chance to take some pictures.

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll have a glass of Ed's OJ, cup of coffee and one of Bill T.'s chocolate donuts. Oh, heck - and some scrambled eggs, toast and blackberry jam, too! Dinner [dinner]

Oops [oops] - and look who gets to cover breakfast. Ah, well...

Just a 'quick' stop by before heading out to that place that makes the nice deposits in my bank account (no, Dick, not Social Security! Wink [;)])...

And that reminds me - today is PAYDAY!, plus I checked the bank account yesterday and they had credited me back the duplicated payment. I had to call and remind them about the insufficient funds charge that needed to be credited back (so that will be going through today, too). Yippee!!

Mitch, I can relate to your delay in getting your license. When I was trying to get mine, the license bureau office was 20+ minute drive away from home, and you had to have a copy of your birth certificate to get to take the test, etc. Well, first it took a bit to get a copy, and then I would be over near that area with my parents, but wouldn't have the b.c. copy, or I'd be at home and remember the certificate, but Mom and/or Dad would be gone someplace and I couldn't get there. I finally took to carrying the certificate copy in my wallet, and did get my license about when I was 18, instead of most of my friends who got theirs around age 16.

Speaking of licenses, now I need to get by the license bureau and get license plates and all for the car. Got the insurance set up yesterday (and a letter indicating that I have insurance), and I have my property taxes receipt for last year. Finally winding those things up.

I also picked up TurboTax yesterday, so over the weekend I'll be seeing about doing my tax returns. Hopefully, I'll get a refund this year (again). Smile [:)]

Better get to breakfast and then out the door for me.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Morning All,

Coffees on and fresh! I'll have one of Bills' donuts and a regular to go please Zoe. In the 40's again this morning but without all the fog. It's supposed to transition to snow by the end of the day so we'll see. Still not doing a good job keeping up with the posts - turned in early last night and din't even get down stairs. We did get all the track in place on the school layout (third graders with tack hammers are awesome - just watch your fingers). Been starting early and staying late at the shop trying to catch up a bit, but there are still so many loose ends to deal with and times getting short.

Hope no-one got hit by the weather yesterday - the twisters sound like they were really bad and the devastation was unreal. Mitch - hope your mom does better back in the hospital and you need to keep her focused on the rehab thing so you can get her home.

Do we have an appropriate holiday coming up for the Fiesta Cookoff ? Hopefully Ryan will be back up to snuff soon and we can have him start work on the commerative menu, no?

Well my sack and coffee have arrived so I'll head back into the shop to get on with it. Hope y''all have a good one.   J.R.

So, when an F4 or F5 tornado crosses train tracks, does it leave them damaged and unsafe?

Evening folks-just some coffee in one of the Donkey mugs also-Jim-thanks for the PM-may have to go the photobucket route when I get more time, since the 1st option didn't work for some reason.

Also, on the bank teller situation, oh well, sounds like the best thing is to move on. BEEN THERE in similar situations! Like they say, when you least expect it... for it happened to me. I initially met Dawn on Match.com back in 2002. We met in person, but didn't click at the time. But we stayed in contact, mostly online, for the next 3 years as friends. She dated others, & so did I. Then in June 2005, still not sure what happened, but we realized we knew each other well enough to give things a shot again-we did, it worked, got engaged a year later, & here we are!

Flashwave-best of luck on your driving test. I took mine 2x-the 1st in my dad's 70' Tbird which was a disaster when it came to the parking/manueverability test, since the car was such a land yacht & poor visibility with the mirrors & windows. Most of my friends' took their tests in either their parents' or friend's much smaller cars, but my Mom said I had to take it in my Dad's car. I asked if I could buy my own & take the test, & she said sure. Took me awhile to save up $500 to snag a '73 Duster w/a V8, but the next time it was no problem!

Update on Mom-she's back over at the hospital she originated at! That's good, since the docs don't feel her cardiac issues are a problem anymore. her spirits are still very good, now for her to get her strength back!

Better hit it-Nite All!  (PS-since I seem to be the last one in here before Bill opens the place up in the morning, does that mean I get busboy duty? oops, never mind I asked that! Whistling [:-^] )

 Good late evening diners!

Glad this place is open late so I guess I should just have something light but I'll throw caution to the wind, give me a cinammon bun Chloe, toasted and a large coffee please.

I agree with Johnboy, the weather our southern neighbours have been getting makes -40 seem rather tame. I hope none of you had any damage and that it passes by quickly. Perhaps Johnboy and I could team up and send a nice high pressure arctic system your way. It might be cold but at least there wouldn't be thunderstorms, tornadoes and whatever else you've been getting. Just give us the word and we'll see what we can do. Wait, I just saw the week-end forecast here and it is for -30 so hang on and we'll push some your way. After all what are neighbours for anyway.

Well the paving crew has been a little slow on my roads. That's just typical, they put up the construction signs, block all traffic and then just leave for a day or two. They now say they'll be done in time for the week-end train operations but I've heard that story before.

I did get the correct decoder in my new Athearn RS3 but forward now actually reverse. At first I thought the decoder was in  backwards but as it is a JST connector, I can't see how that is possible. Lucky I'm the only operator but that isn't a quarantee of no future accidents.

Well it's time to head to bed as my furry alarm clocks  usually go off before 6 demanding to be let out. Hope that coffee doesn't keep me awake.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another beautiful day down here in Paradise.  Cool [8D]  Really nice low 70's temperature and cloudy while we were out at the orange grove in the morning.  The sun came out about noon and it warmed up a bit in the afternoon to maybe high 70's.  But I didn't need to run the a/c today like I did yesterday evening and all night!  Thumbs Up [tup]

Only spent a few hours at the grove today, plus the travel time of course.  The cut another 3 tons of oranges.  Looks like they'll be back tomorrow for 3 more.  Like I say, I'm glad to relieve the trees of all that weight.  And there's still a bunch of fruit still on the trees that they picked over.  They left the small ones and any that weren't sufficiently ripe.  And they only picked one variety.  So no worries here in the Coffee Shop / Diner, there's still enough fruit to satisfy your needs.  Big Smile [:D]

Paul B:  I can't believe that Tony Koster's article on ON-30 caused such a bru ha ha.
I'm always amused by people who chime in and opine on a thread when they haven't actually read the editorial/article in question.  [insert "shaking head" smilie]

Since we have to get up early again tomorrow, this will be another quick drive by posting.

Hasta mañana,

Ed

Early Evening Gang: Well I got not much done today. I did get the tractor hooked up to the trailer and had figured on making a quick trip out to Clark Gardens to discuss the HO layout. I ended up spending the afternoon there. You know, good company and friendly chatter. I didn't get home untill 4:30. I did order some C&NW passenger cars from Walthers. I get them at cost through the gardens.

Hoople: Great gift there, congratulations.

Garry: I hope that you get over the crud soon. I know that it isn't fun. It's really bad when you aren't feeling bad enough to stay home but not well enough to really get anything done at work. You might consider staying home to protect you fellow workers.

I can't believe that Tony Koster's article on ON-30 caused such a bru ha ha. I thought that the article was good. I'd give the On 30 a try but I don't need another scale to work in. Heck I can't even get anything done in the 3 I have now.

Well I guess Daisy wants to go out. I'll stop back in later.
