Hello everyone-just a quick update on the fires on the West Coast. I live in San Bernardino County and just took some pictures of the fire in Lake Arrowhead from my front door. So far they have lost over 200 homes in this fire alone. My department is currently on stand by to assist with evacuations since the fire is now moving down the hill towards the city of San Bernardino and Highland. My husband has been put on a strike team for our police department as well. My brother in law is out there somewhere on these fires-please pray for all of our police and firefighters that are out there on the fire lines, along with everyone who has lost everything. It is quite a mess out here....

Evenin' boys. Evenin' Mistyk. Well, yesterday, ol' fifedog got pounded (pun intended). Coming home from work and was in the middle of a 4-car rear-end collision. 3 of us sitting still, guy in pick-up rear-ends 'nuther pick-up rear-ends me pushing me into caddy. My little car took heavy damage to its left rear end, and it may not be fixable. Me, cuts & bumps.

dougnottagrump - keep my fingers crossed for ya.
dbaker48 - Strange thing is all these fires start JUST AS YOUR WIFE IS COMING HOME...hmmmm

Been there before but I had a safe stopping distance(just barley) between me and the next car, it was caused a few cars back where an uninsured and unlicensed teen who may have been under the influence took a corner too fast and slamed into stoped traffic.
in 19 years of driving have been bumped 3 times no major damage however had a car catch fire a couple times once was the alternator and once the starter both on an 88 ford escort

Prayers for all the folks in CA exposed or working the fires. Hope they get under control real soon. If big rains come, you have mud slides. I guess the better of the worse is mud slides. Good luck and God bless.
BTW: My CTT was waiting when I got home Sunday night. Only had time to look at front cover. Maybe tonight. Off to feed the birds [feeders in my yard] and the deer at the pond. Bet they are saying, " He don't come by anymore and he don't write either." [deer don't speak good English, you all know that don't you?]

There might be a "deer John" letter waiting for you, Chief! And please, don't be hard on the beaver!
I gassed up on the way home today. I couldn't help but wonder how far the oil companies are going to leverage the fires in CA in their favor. $3.25 by this time next month?

FIFE,
Hope you'll be able to walk it off. Hope you didn't hurt those bunny ears?

Jim....The CA fires will be good for at least $3.50. They raised it 2 dollars a barrel, when some Oil Baron got gas !!!!

Glad to hear that you're ok, Fifey. I was sitting in front of school today waiting for my daughter, when a car driven by an old timer came down the street with the rear passenger door open! His open door missed my brand new car by inches. Whewwwww!
Fife, glad to hear you are ok.
Jim A, I'm sure your heart stopped for a moment. I know mine would have.
What a great afternoon !!!!!!!!
It appears as if the "Devil Winds" are slowing down, we only have some gentle, although still easterly, winds with some occaissional gusts but no where near what they were yesterday or sunday.
Earlier today we were very concerned about a couple of new fires in the Palomar Mt area but the smoke has abated somewhat from that direction and we can see more blue sky. Now if we can just get some some gentle and VERY HI HUMIDITY cool breezes off the ocean.
I think we can safely say there is a light at the end of the tunnel that ain't a fireball.
It isn't over but it's getting there.

Well, that guy will not get the cash I promised him.
Been snoozing with the wife in the livingroom. I went to sleep sitting up and she went to sleep laying down on the couch. We were both suppose to be watching TV. Was up late last night [this AM and got to watch Californication that endid at 2 AM]. Sister-in-law called at 8 AM followed by a person I will not mention [can't keep a job ]. Person, don't blame you. Good luck on the others. Later.
Evening All
Fife- Glad you are OK, may be sore tomorrow.
I worked on the layout and got the crane, and Gabe and moved the water tower. I may go ahead and rund the wires for the other coaler while I've the wire wrap off and a mess made.
Scored big time at local train shop! The owner saw me out Friday and said he had some American Flyer stuff and would give me first shot at it. To my complete surprise there was a tipple car set!! I bought the tipple cars another 303 steamer, 3- gons (2-805 & 640) 2 925 tankers, 728 rerailer and a girder bridge for $50. I would of spent $60 just for the tipples. He set the price and I didn't argue. I am cleaning them up now. The loco runs but will need cleaning and a lube. Happy happy happy!!!!
May God bless
Jim

For a second there I thought you posted 'I found a DVD I'd been missing' and was wondering what it would be doing under your passenger seat...Got some work done on the bathroom tonight! Light Soffets are painted, lights are up, and 1/4 of the shower is tiled! Tomorrow I'm supposed to help a friend put the roof on his shed... but only if he's coming over to help me with the bathroom. Should be able to finish the shower the next night I work on the bathroom (bending over to tile takes a lot out of you). So I won't have the bathroom completed by Sunday, but it will be close...Tired... watching The Unit. Chief... why didn't you tell me you were related to one of the hottest chickies on TV? How about an signed pic? Colin... how's the knee?Misty - glad to hear you are OK, and prayers for all involved with fires!Dougonahotseat - Glad to hear you are faring well too!
Brent, I agree with you regarding Emily Procter.
An the knee is a lot better. At my first PT visit I was only able to bend my knee about 78 degrees, but it was re-measured today and it can bend about 110 degrees. So I was very happy with that news. But, as my luck would have it something is wrong with my esouphagus (sp?) I have to get an xray because food sometimes gets lodged.
Have them check to see whether you have a Hiatal Hernia. I was having trouble swallowing. The doctor did an endoscopy and found some acid reflux damage at the base of the esophagus, and a narrowing as well. He ballooned the esophagus a bit and I haven't had any trouble since. I am on Prilosec or Prevacid or a generic, depending on what is available and the price that Medicare will pay. A pill a day is better than the agony I used to go through at mealtimes. Good luck!!!

Doug and Misty,
Tonight the national news was all over the fires in Southern California. I have seen some fires in my lifetime, but I have never seen anything like what you folks are experiencing. Please know we are all thinking about you and your safety.
Doug, you mentioned Palamar Mountain. Isn't that the place with the big telescope? I was there when I was about 11 years old.
The Chief is related to a hot chick on TV?????????? Somebody has been smoking something.

Buckeye, You visited Palomar Observatory when you were eleven, I didn't think Palomar was that old. Sorry bout that, but I just couldn't resist.
The DC-10 super tanker is supposed to be making some fire retardent drops on the Palomar fires, would love to see some film of that. It will carry 24k gallons at a time making two passes, 12k at a pop.
GOOD Evening - Things may be getting better, at least the winds are calmer. Sky is red, smoke smell very prevalent. HOPEFULLY the winds will not increase tonight. There are still some significant fires, but with some good luck, weather, and the aircraft that has been brought in tomorrow night could be a LOT better.
Got to get REAL busy around here!!!! SHE'S ON HER WAY BACK !!!! Got a call they are in Rolla, Mo. tonight. Don't know if they are planing a stop in Branson, I would. So lots of work here. I looked at mapquest and it said Rolla, was 1725 miles, time required to drive 1 day 0 hours. Now thats pretty quick ! I think they might have a problem.
Can't write more, got a bridge to figure out.
Take care.
Best Wishes for you and your family Misty ! God Bless all the good that your family does!!!
Dougsnotagrump and Don and Misty - I am glad you're not feeling like a marshmallow right now! Stay chillin' doods and doodettes (that's Californyatalk, I think? )
Fifedog - glad you are okay too - I've been in the middle of one of those clusters before and it is pretty scary!
Doug M - cool pics and nice blog!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Don - tell wife to try Alex's Pizza Palace in Rolla
Colin - good luck with the dysphagia and I hope they get you fixed up ASAP! Mel, glad to hear you are okay - this is a pretty common problem, but if untreated you can get Barretts Esophagitis etc - BAD NEWS!
Worked an hour of OT again then got home just in time for cubscouts. Finally relaxing - watched Reaper on DVR and now watching Bones - 2 great shows, hope they stay on the air! Usually when I like a show, it's the kiss of death.
PS - my coworker Tammy is doing great postop and they sent her home today. She's on ordered bedrest and her Mom is staying with her. Thank God!

Watching the California fires on the news tonight, they showed one house that had burned to the ground right next to an in ground swimming pool that must have held at least 10,000 gallons of water. The irony of that image was striking, and got me thinking that there must be a feasible way to construct a homemade sprinkler system that could protect a house from the type of fast moving fires that are now sweeping through California.
Just off the top of my head, I can envision something like pop-up lawn sprinklers permanently installed every ten feet or so along the ridge line of a house, and connected to a water line that runs up to the roof. As a fire grew near, a home owner could turn on a valve and activate the sprinklers to wet the roof, and quickly extinguishing any cinders that landed on the roof. This, coupled with a clear space, free of combustible material, around the perimeter of the house, and maybe some additional sprinklers on the ground aimed at the side of the house, might protect most homes from the kind of fast moving fires California is dealing with.
And one wouldn't even need a swimming pool, since municipal water supplies are unlikely to be unaffected during such fires. And if a home is on a well, a backup generator and auxiliary water pump could feed the sprinklers in the event of a power outage.
I think this might be feasible in view of the fast moving nature of these brush fires, which, like tornadoes, seem to do their damage quickly and then are gone in a relatively short period of time.
While such a sprinkler system might cost a few thousand dollars, for those living in areas susceptible to brush fires, wouldn't this would be a small price to pay, when compared to the cost and aggravation of having to rebuild one's home. Any thoughts?
