Live from Roger's Corners, Ohio

It's Saturday Morning

This morning, I present a thought provoking essay for your consideration.

Things Southerners Will Never Say

  • I'll take Shakespeare for 1000, Alex.
  • Duct tape won't fix that.
  • Honey, I think we should sell the pickup and buy a family sedan.
  • Come to think of it, I'll have a Heineken.
  • We don't keep firearms in this house.
  • Has anybody seen the sideburns trimmer?
  • You can't feed that to the dog.
  • I thought Graceland was tacky.
  • No kids in the back of the pickup, it's just not safe.
  • Wrestling's fake.
  • Honey, did you mail that donation to Greenpeace?
  • We're vegetarians.
  • Do you think my gut is too big?
  • I'll have grapefruit and grapes instead of biscuits and gravy.
  • Honey, we don't need another dog.
  • Who gives a crap who won the Civil War?
  • Give me the small bag of pork rinds.
  • Too many deer heads detract from the decor.
  • Spittin' is such a nasty habit.
  • I just couldn't find a thing at Wal-Mart today.
  • Checkmate.
  • She's too young to be wearing a bikini.
  • Does the salad bar have bean sprouts?
  • Hey, here's an episode of "Hee Haw" that we haven't seen.
  • I don't have a favorite college team.
  • Be sure to bring my salad dressing on the side.
  • You ALL.
  • Those shorts ought to be a little longer, Darla.
  • Nope, no more for me. I'm drivin' tonight.
  • Let's move to the city!
  • That is enough children.
  • We have too many dogs!
  • I don't want to go huntin'.
  • I'll take a root beer.
  • My house doesn't have wheels.
  • " I had too much beer.
  • Dont you think my truck is to big?
  • I hate John Deere.
  • Oh, that ain't a dog that's my pet mule.
  • I don't think I want a gun rack in my truck, they are just too tacky.
  • Elivis who?
  • I'm glad the South didn't win.

Laugh [(-D] Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D] Laugh [(-D]

Off to a meeting today.  Next weekend the same thing.  The weekend after that the best holiday of all, St. Patricks Day.  May need to go drinking with the O'Grady's all that weekend.

Still waiting for my order of MTH Realtrax.  I guess MTH really stuck the dealers around Christmas by not providing them with track.

Next week, I will be taking a trip back to the Banks of the Wabash, In Famed Hoosierland.  I have two train stores in Indy that I might need to stop and look.  No money due to track purchase.

Some of you may have seen my posting about Generic Flat Cars.  These cars seem to be an excellent choice for die cast vehicles of all types and you don't pay an arm and a leg.

Brent, why are you in Pittsburgh?  The Carnegie Institute has a big train layout, but the best place is the top of the mountain overlooking the rivers and the tracks.

See ya down the tracks,

Made it to Pittsburgh in one piece!  Big Smile [:D]  Traffic was far from terrific... speed ranged from 25 - 95 on I-70 and the PA Turnpike... got passed by 3 cops on the turnpike like I was going the other dirrection!  Disapprove [V]  But at least I didn't get a ticket! Approve [^]

Question - stopping at a hobby store tomorrow to get the B-Unit for the Chessie F-3 AA set... they have 2 instock, should I be greedy and get both of them, or is A-B-A enough?

Also - is it possible to add smoke to these MTH engines?

Lisa,
You can call Lionel and order the switch cables... or just go to Radio Shack and get the 4 wire spool.  IMHO, the wires are a bit thin, 22 ga, I think, so I would recommend something a little thicker in the 18 - 16 ga range.

Dennis - I am so glad that you and yours are safe.  I weas really worried when I saw the radar for your area last night.  My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been so tragically affected in the last couple of days by the weather and accidents.

Had a tornado in our town a few years back that skipped around a lot.  Took out three churches, part of a textile plant, many houses were destroyed and hundreds were severely damaged.  Lost a lot of great big really old trees, and my old elementary school.  It even hit the firestation about 5 mi. north of us - picked up a full size engine.  Only had 2 deaths - a young school teacher who had just left school - it picked her car up and slammed it up against a 100 yr old brick building; an elderly man was killed when a tree blew into his house.   Never seen anything like it except on TV.  Hope never to again.

TRAIN RELATED QUESTION:  I have an O36 FasTrack remote switch.  Problem:  the wire to the remote is too short to reach my control panel area.  Anybody got a wire stretcher?Big Smile [:D]

Thanks for the thoughts Reggie.  Also remember the families and fellow students from that Ohio bus accident in Atlanta.  Been a bad day for many folks.  Glad your day has gone well.  Good luck in the training.  By the way, after you are done and have paid your dues to the company, if you are looking for something, my brother in law owns a trucking firm out of Atlanta.  They run about 20 big rigs and some other logistic stuff including rail freight.  Don't want to make you jump ship, but it is nice to know options are out there.

I just got some photos from one of our anesthesia docs who owns some land in Sumter county and has worked at the hospital over there.  Real bad damage.  Some folks got severly injured, but it is amazing that more didn't die.

God Bless,

Dennis

first and formost my thoughts and prayers go out to the families that lost loved ones in the storm this week in alabama and georgia.

next i made it to dallas inone piece today to get ready to start training for truck driving. also had a chance to go by trains and toys, and discount model rairoad. nice stores trains and toys had a really nice selection of accessories to choose from but not that many modern day engines to choose from as that was my main reason for going there. looked at the ones they had and the traction tires where all rotted out. not good for business if you get someone in there who knows about trains a little and knows what to look for. discount trains had a smaller selection of trains and accessories but nothing that really caught my eye, except a lionel sd60 csx conventional engine with magnetraction cant remember the road number but it was brand new and they only wanted 150.00 for it. will go back by there before i leave dallas to get it. i just wasn't in the train buying mood today to get it. other than that all went well today as i got to visit my sister and 2 nephews and that really made my day as i haven't seen them since this past summer. well i have to get some rest as i have to wake up early in the morning to get started with my training. hope everyone is doing great and take care.

Evening everyone.  We don't have local TV...just the Sat.  Anyway, looked on the computer and got to see the paths of the tornados.  Seems they jumped right over us and did major distruction on either side of us, whew! that was close.  Our hospital took in 40 patients from the one that was destroyed in Americus, just up the road.  From what they are saying, the hospital is a total loss.

To keep this train related, I spoke with my neighbor, he is the president of Georgia Southwestern Railroad.  They seem to have gotten away with little damage.  They are not running trains, but have sent out track crews to inspect and clear the rails.

We are volunteering to head up to the other hospital tomorrow to do some recovery work.  At this point, the equipment is toast, but the patient records would be the big thing to recover.  I hear the president is supposed to come by.

Everyone have a great weekend.

Buckeye,

You are absolutely correct.

As further proof of global warming I offer these pictures I recently recieved of the snow on Route 11, Outside of Oswego, New York.

This should settle the arguement right here, there is no question that we are getting much less snowfall than in the past.

This might even stop a freight train, just to keep on topic. Smile [:)]

Thanks Buckeye! I needed cheering up.

You left out the part about how special forces, aided by UFO technology, secretly blew up the levees in the middle of the hurricane to maximize damage. (That is actually one of the conspiracy theories floating around. Banged Head [banghead]

In reality, hurricanes are powerful, terrible things. I've been through five in my life. After hurricane Frederick in 1979, I had no power for three weeks and no water for a week. Yet I don't recall anyone blaming it on the government or anyone else. We helped each other, cleaned up and rebuilt Mobile. It was tough and not much fun, but everyone from all walks of life worked together to recover. I vividly remember members of the Mobile city council handing out bags of ice and manning chain saws. They were too busy to hang around in front of TV cameras for long.

And to keep this train related, in those days, the L&N, Frisco, ICG, Southern and Terminal Raiway of the Alabama State Docks all served Mobile. Today it's BN, NS, CSX, CN and the TRR. Times do change.

Good Morning... Hope everyone keeps on top of the weather.

Kinda embarrassing... On the show that aired on the Freight trains earlier this week, one of the areas that was highlighted was the port of LA and Long Beach.  Well, drive right by it everyweek to the train club.  See all the cranes and yards, ships, it is HUGE.  Now, that area that was refferred to as the TRENCH, a 10 mile subterrian level of mainlines that allow the trains to move from the harbor area to the primary classification yard, which is located in South Eastern LA, I have never seen and didn't know existed !!Dunce [D)]  So I got to go find it.  I know I'm driving over it somewhere.

No progress on the train room recently, been taking care of other issues around the house, work, and other junk (work).  Looking forward to get out there.  Got news yesterday that our BB that was sent off for warranty repair has been shipped back to us.  Big Smile [:D]  (Broken wire in the teather)

Need to check out one of those "Little Giant" ladders, see if that would work for some scaffolding, alternative to paying someone $2,500 for painting.  UGH

Did pickup some people for our passenger cars, originally thought was getting a good deal, but I don't think so.  40 people sitting down for $27, K-line catalog has 40 for $20, live and learn, Cheap lesson overall, source was promoting many other items as well, re-evaluated sources intentions.

By the Way, Bunco is a woman's "Back Alley Dice Game", as defined by my wife.  Only its played in someones house.  They have about 12 to 16 people at one time and rotate houses.

Hope everyone has a great day!  Going to be working with train heralds today.

LOOKING FORWARD TO YORK !!! Big Smile [:D]

BTW, I will vote for Doug, I'll even get another subscription so I can read between the lines.

Good morning from a wet and windy Chicago where it can't decide whether to snow, rain, sleet or hail - but everything is falling horizontally. Blew my hat off.  I am thrilled at all the support Buckeye is garnering for my campaign to become the new editor of CTT - wonder if I can do it on the side with my current job - it can't be too hard, right? Think of all the neat photos I'd get to see and articles to read. I promise to feature you all. Wink [;)]

Boy, those Chinese food references bring back memories of lots of interesting foods eaten in Hong Kong, Peru and Guatemala - what is the expression: they eat everything but the squeak.

Mitch, I'm jealous - Dr. Seuss is my main man! At least, with a four year old, I find myself reading lots of his work. And visiting with Mr. Rogers. Our library is closed while they try to rearrange the shelves to jam more books in the same building.

Bought a whole bunch of hook-up wire at Radio Shack yesterday. Hope it is OK for the layout - it is the same pretty colors - black, green and red.

Good Morning Everyone....

Guess what??  It's snowing again today in the Mile High City.  Grumpy [|(]  It's 21 and bone chilling cold today.  I suppose I'm lucky that I have an indoor job.

I received my copy of rrtrack and began a rough layout lastnight.  GRRRRR I'm more confused then ever....but it's getting there I suppose.  It's the dream layout and certainly not anything that I'll rush out and by the track for today.  But still I love the software and realize it's really going to help simplify things.

Well...I better go get another cup of coffee and catch up on work.

Interesting all the whinning comes from Louisiana.  Nary a word do we hear from the folks in Alabama or Mississippi.  From photos, it appears that there were only foundations left in Alabama and Miissippi.

I was always taught that there wree two types of levys, Federal and Local.  During the flooding of the Mississippi several years ago, I was told that the major failures were the local levys. The federally constructed levys around St. Louis worked magnificicently.  My name and my engineering seal are on several federal levy plans in the Midwest.  Take it to the bank that the designs are very conservative.

Good morning all,

We have been getting our share of rain.  Not sure how much as I don't have a rain gauge outside, the freeze around here in winter.

No dampness in the basement as of yet.

The Susquehanna River is the spot being watched locally, as well as the feeder streams, as the ice can cause problems when it breaks up and causes ice dams.

Take care,

Blueberry, the Chief is supposed to meet up with some yanks for dinner in the near future.  We are keeping vigil in case they try to kidnap him and bring him into the heart of yankeeland.

Roger and Lisa, we are well, thanks for the thoughts.  It did get quite windy and we have some limbs down, but no other damage.  The hospital just up the road was hit and they lost a few folks.  I think they will transfer the rest of the patients to other area hospitals.  This may limit our beds and cases.  As for the blood, all the labs were drawn yesterday and we should have the results today.

I have to get ready to head into work.  Watching the kids right now and watching "Thomas".  I really enjoy the time with the kids when they are just playing well together.  Right now, my daughter is changing into another dress, this one is a "snow white", and she is wearing a tierra.  I think she is going to be impossible when she grows up as she already thinks she is a princess!

May y'all have a good day,

Dennis

PS: John Bakeer, We may be the "richest country" but there is plenty of corruption to go around.  Pre Katrina, the local politicians took the money that was supposed to go and build the levies correctly to use for their own purposes.  They Army Corps of Engineers have warned them for a LONG time and they continued to misuse the money.  Then the incompotent mayor had all the school buses and methods to evacuate the city at his disposal and they stayed parked.  SoapBox [soapbox]  To top it off, they then go and blame everyone else.  Plenty of blame to go around.  You didn't see this kind of reaction when Andrew hit south Florida.

Dennis, I'm glad your family was spared major damage from the storm. Likewise, we only had heavy rains but no tornados or damaging winds here. Thanks, everyone for the kind words and prayers. It is a sad day in Alabama and Georgia with so many young people killed. Although we are about three hours from Enterprise, I know several people there. The church next to the destroyed high school (Hillcrest Baptist Church) was where our senior pastor served for several years before coming to Prattville. I went to seminary with their current pastor there and am good friends with their associate pastor. I have not been able to contact them and don't know if there families are o.k. or not.

John B. I second what Dennis said about Katrina. I lived in New Orleans for three years back in the early 1980s. The politics in Louisisana have always been corrupt. Now the incompetence has come back to haunt them.Angry [:(!]  I've been there twice on disaster relief trips and will return again in May to help rebuild a church. Volunteers are making things happen while the local government spins its wheels. Certainly, the federal government was slow responding initially, but billions of dollars have poured in to that city with not a lot to show. Truly sad!

Laz, Are you sure you didn't accidently turn them off by hitting AUX2?

Good morning all,

We have been getting our share of rain.  Not sure how much as I don't have a rain gauge outside, the freeze around here in winter.

No dampness in the basement as of yet.

The Susquehanna River is the spot being watched locally, as well as the feeder streams, as the ice can cause problems when it breaks up and causes ice dams.

Take care,
