Be wary of the prices advertised in Charles Ro Supply ads.  I ordered an item last week out of the March CTT at $79.99 only to be called and told the price had increased to $89.99.  This is after they accepted the order, by phone, and even though it is in the March issue. It did not matter to them.  As a matter of principle I cancelled the order.  I doubt I will order from them agian.

Dr. John - glad that all worked out well in the end.  I guess all the time you spend talking with the Lord and doing His work does pay off.

Dr. John,  Wow, what a memorable weekend!  Congrats on the engagement, and thank god about your son and Mom, that accident could have been real nasty.  Life is just so fragile!

Hope everyone has a good day!  Off to work.

Dr. John,
Congrats on the daughter's engagement!

Sorry to hear about the accident and your mother's fall.  Glad everyone is OK though!

Roger,
I've had my issues with Charles Ro in the past.  I too think I have made my last purchase through them.

Good morning from a grey but warmish (30s) Chicago where potholes are sprouting everywhere and after serious negotiations with the bride, I have finally banished the cats from being in the basement overnight - they're just too curious about the layout (and destructive). We start the new regime tonight. Wish me luck.

Dr. John, I sure am glad Ryan is OK. Hopefully, in about a decade, I'll be asked the same way your daughter's beau asked you.  My 15 year old daughter has a Really Serious boyfriend for the past 6 months and I'm still not used to it - nor him - don't want to be too welcoming if you know what I mean.

Jim A, glad Julia is healthy and you had fun at that dance - I remember a few -- that window of time sure goes by quickly. How heavy is the aquarium charcoal ? I have two hoppers filled with real gravel and they certainly test coupler strength.

Mitch, hope you're feeling better today.

John, I missed your original description of your beautiful hopper and gon loads - is it all brass tubing? How did you paint them?

Good Monday Morning Gang,

It's currently 36 on it's way to around 60 in the Mile High City.  Ran my train a bit yesterday.  I really need to get some more track and other accessories.  I may try to start my benchwork this weekend.  I want to get the track I have now up off the floor and I know the layout won't start taking shape until a portion of the benchwork is done.  I just need to design how I want the benchwork to initially take shape and start it.  Just do it man!!!

Well it sounds like prayers are working overtime around here!  Glad Julia doing better, and John it does sound like it was a weekend to remember!  Blessings abound.

Beautiful in Southern Ohio.  River still above flood stage, looks like chocolate milk it is so muddy.  Cool and windy.  Easy morning, reading for class and taking a break now.  I've got a 312 loco that started running higher than usual amps, so I'll dig into it later.  Check back in later.

Marty, hope you get BIG seats.  Dr. John, sure is a great report as all turned out OK and getting a new son too.  Reports done and emailed.  Now time for food. Dinner [dinner]  Then off to the eye Dr. for checkup.  Been three years so I know he will say you need stronger lenses.  That is why I don't go that often.  They will increase the strength each year and make you dependant on them.  I can take them off and not wear them for hours and begin to see just as good without them.

Marty, great job on doctoring photo.  Looks like the "real" thing. Later.

Marty - that is a great photo! NYC rules! Hope you have a great trip.

Forecast for the next 5 days - 40's-50's low and 70's highs - ahhhhh! Cool [8D]

Busy catching up from last week as my co e-mail server went erratic which put me a few days in arrears Angry [:(!]

As Marty said - I'll keep everyone with troubles in my collective thoughts.

Dr.John - wow - I am so thankful that everything turned out well for your family.

Doug - I am dealing with exactly the same problem with my 15 year old daughter - ugh! Banged Head [banghead]

Sent my dead 261E loco from the 269E tinplate set back to Just Trains for repair or replacement. Hope I get the loco back this week.

Chief - I agree - I seem to encounter the same scenario with my eye doc.

Thor - I got your e-mail but I have trouble sending you a response. Can you contact me again?

Have a great day all!

Regards, Roy

Doug,
The charcoal I use is by Black Diamond.  It's very light, but even so, I don't fill the entire hopper. A styrofoam floor a 1/2" or so from the top is painted black, and the charcoal is then glued on top of that. Sometimes we make 2 mounds of coal, other cars have a single large mound. It looks incredibly realistic. I use a 50/50 mix of white glue and water to glue everything down.

Chief,
I've worn the same glasses for the past 15 years. Only now am I starting to see a loss significant enough to warrant a stronger prescription. I wear them as infrequently as possible. Eyes, like any other body part, become stronger through use.

MAN [LADY]!!!!  How many posts since I posted Friday???  At this rate we will overload the CPU before June.

I know its risky to mess with tradition but what about a new "Coffee Pot" thread each month.  The old threads woud be around for a while after being closed allowing review by anyone desiring to do so.  I just wonder how many new forumites would ever read from the beginning so why have that much info anyhow?  Just my 2 cents.

Checking in from up North!

Congrats for those that deserve them for all the good hobby progress made in all of these postings. Glad to hear that some of the near misses in acidents have turned out as well as they did. Hang tough for all who are working on the toughter side of parenting issues. Hang even tougher for those of you who are the kids– with parents that are working on the parenting issues! Congrats to those who will be  expanding their families; to those who have new jobs; and those who have purchased new (or used) trains. For those with illnesses and afflictions and/or family members who are in need of support and prayers– you have them. (I think that covers most of what I have read in some of the back log of postings from the Coffee Pot Krew!)

Not much time for hobby related pursuits this past month. So not much to share there. I will say the weather is finally warming up in the Interior of Alaska. It was only -16°F this morning when I arrived at work. The weather forecast says by the end of the week we will be enjoying tempratures above 0°F during the days. This means our 21 day cold snapp is moving out!! Headphones [{(-_-)}]. Sorry but that also means someone down south is in for some colder than normal weather and will likely be getting snow along with this latest arctic cold front hean toward the Lower 48. The weather guys said we just finished the coldest Feb in Fairbanks since 1954! What the heck happened to Al Gore's Global Warming?

Best Regards from the Freezer!

Dr. John,

Glad to hear that your son is ok.  I had a similar scary situation last week.  I was coming back from Walmart, and someone in a Honda on the other side of the line decided that they would pass the person in front of them.  They crossed the centerline and were headed straight for me.  I looked to my right, checked to be sure it was clear, and made a hard and fast right.  I ended up going across the right lane and across the fog line.  If that person would have hit me,  I don't think I'd be here to type this.  Then again, maybe I would would have been able to get another Probe GT, or even  better a 97 GTS.

Good Evening Everyone !!  A really cold one at work today.

Glad Jim & Julia had a great time at her dance & she got 3 baskets !! I'll bet she was happy !!

Buckeye : hope your track comes soon & glad you got a flat screen !!  I sure like mine & the small amount of room it takes up "in my layout" !!

Chuck has worked all the way up to the scenery stage now, he's really made progress !!

I'm really glad all is working out for Dr. John & his family now .

Doug M :  I used K&S 1/4" square brass tubing, cut & soldered underneath, then painted it with Polly Scale Special Oxide Red !!  I think that paint gives it that " fresh from the factory look " !! For the gon loads, I have saved some weight by making the bottom tier hollow in the middle, cause you can't see it down in there. I have the 2 long outer ones & just small end peices on the ends soldered in so to save quite a bit of weight !!

Hope everyone has a nice evening !!

Thanks, John

Afternoon all,

Thanks goes out to AKKevinT for sending more balmy weather down here.  The ice buildup on the eves will again be back to 3' thick in no time.  Thanks Kevin! Wink [;)]

Glued the porthole windows back on the K-Line N5 cabin this morning.  Every time I'd grab it by the side ends another one would pop off inside.  I guess I gotta start remembering to handle it in the middle or else stop using the ol' 0-5-0 shifter.

Ah!  Brit TV.  Being a Colonial we've always been inundated with numerous BBC offerings by the CBC.  Dr. Who was one of the first I remember seeing as a kid back in the 60's.  Then came stuff like Benny Hill, Are You Being Served, Man About The House and On The Busses.  Best of all was Monty Python!  These days we still watch Coronation Street every weeknight.  The newest Dr. Who has been shown irregularily within the last few years.  Can't believe they did away with Rose....she was a hottie!

Dr. John, I know we are to Praise Him in all things, but it is a lot easier when we see the blessings up front.  Great news out of what could have been.  It is a reminder of how fragile life is.

Not much going on the train front.  I am on call and have plenty to do.

Y'all have a great day,

Dr. John, Glad to hear your "could have been" weekend turned out so well.  Both my daughters are long married, but I do have a, soon to be 14, granddaughter, who's father BTW is a baptist minister.  He is getting very nervious about all the interest the daughter is getting. It is cold and blustery here today.  Sun in and out.

Got an email from Jeff Kane, he can't come up with a part number for what I need so I may have to call Lionel.

Fife,
Thanks for the reply!  Not sure I like the idea of missing 20 minutes of train shopping! Disapprove [V]

When I go check on the rental property I always get trackside as the route there takes me along both the NS and the CSX tracks (NS on the Northern side, CSX on the Southern side - never could figure that one out!).  Well when I was in the shop picking up the B Unit I saw the MTH Conway Yards Yard Tower... talk about impressive!  I may have to get one of those for my yard... would be a nice compliment to the roundhouse... and fitting as well.  I think I'm going with the turntable/roundhouse.  I figured I don't need anything longer than a 26 inch table because I'm not going to be running anything larger than the C&O F-19 Pacifics, wish I could go with an Allegheny, but the O-72 radius just isn't practical on a 6 ft deep layout...

BTW - Wife is going out of town next Monday and Tuesday... Wink [;)]

Bill,
I passed on it for now.  I didn't like the idea of having two B Units with the same number - the RR would have never done that, and I didn't feel like messing with the numbers... there is always that possibility of getting a second one though... you never know!!  LOL!!

Doug - I am fine.  It's my buddy Dave that is hospitalized. He was sick for several weeks  with vomiting and nausea, thought he had a stomach virus.  After 3 weeks of vomiting and not getting any better, they put him in the hospital to give him some fluids and they found out his kidneys had quit working.  They completed the kidney biopsy today.  They hope to have preliminary results by Wednesday.  They let him skip dialysis today but will have it tomorrow.

Dr. John - glad that your son and Mom are doing well after their scary events.

csxt30/John - I love the loads you created.

Just me and the dog here tonight...The Mrs. has gone to spend the night at her girlfriend's house and take her to the hospital early tomorrow AM.  Her friend is having a cardiac catheterization.  She had an EKG at her regular physical in December with no problems. This weekend she was experiencing some chest pain when she was walking over the weekend. At first she thought she had strained a muscle breaking up the ice in her parking lot. They did another ekg today at the Dr.'s office and saw significant changes.  Her girlfriend has no history of heart disease and is a pretty fit person who eats healthy and exercises regularly.

Ran trains for a while tonight, no pile ups or problems.  Started to get cold so I shut 'em down and came inside to check the forum.

Take care,

Mitch

Good evening! Thanks for the kind words regarding Ryan's accident and Mom's fall. We are very thankful Ryan was not hurt or worse. The insurance stuff is really minor in comparison.

I may start on a simple garage layout for my 82 year old father. (He lives across the street.) He's in good shape for his age and could use a diversion while he cares for Mom, who has Alzheimers. I'm thinking of a 5x9 layout with two or three independent loops. He likes to see trains run but has no interest in switching. I've got enough Lionel track for at least an O-42 and O-31 loop. Some green paint and a few Plasticville buildings and he should be good to go. He's got a large, two car garage with only one car, so he has plenty of room.

Dr. John, yours is the second Jeep Wrangler that I have heard about that rolled without any injuries.  I am glad your son is okay.

Long drive today, but I am here.  Lafayette, IN is a very famous railroad town.  The Monon shops were on the north end of the city.  The Monon, Wabash and N.Y. Central all served the city.  As a child I road the NYC from here to Cincinnati, where we caught the B&O.  I have had an attachment to this famous railroad town for over 55 years.  It all started when I was born here in 1951.  I was born at Home Hospital across from the zoo. (The Chief is going to have a field day, now!)  Tomorrow I will look to see if they have put up the plague on the side of the hospital.  Big Smile [:D]

The hotel is downtown and the streets have been rolled up.  The big news in town is that Toyota will be building Camrays at the Subaru assemble plant.  Cat has a big plant here, as well as  Alcola.  Cat and Subaru have been here around 30 years with very modern robotic plants.  I first saw my first robotic machine that ran on a paper tape back in 1969.  Of course now they are computer controlled.  The ingredients are all here for manufacturing success; education, transportaion, water, electical power, and a work force that has a dirt farmer work ethic.  They even have passenger rail service!!!

Speaking of dirt, this is the eastern edge of corn country.  The dirt is rich and black.

See ya down the tracks,
