Good evening all,

Saw the movie "Rush" tonight.  Very good flick about F-1 in the mid 70s.  Work was quiet.

Hello All,

TGIF!!!!!!!!! (But I'll be in the office most of the day tomorrow)

Crazy past couple weeks.Work has been slow but we're bidding every thing that comes along. So is everyone else and prices are to the bone I'm bidding just over break even and getting beat by 20 OR 30% It is a good time to build something

Son started combining 'beans this week. Been having problems with the combine losing beans. I think we may have that resolved

I've had a small fire in the boiler for a couple of weeks to keep the dampness out of the basement but it was cool and damp enough this AM I turned on the power to let it circulate through the house.

Looking forward to YORK Friday. Any body else here going? Saturday Mrs and I will spend at the outlets near Lancaster and maybe visit the TCA Museum just down the road.

The Altoona Train show is Sunday at the Blair County Convention Center. I'll spend some time walking and visiting old friends. Then I'll come home and get the grandkids and take them.

Think I'll go to bed soon.

Prayers for those in need

Ohayō (Ohio Chuck),

The sun is out in full force this Saturday morning which means I have no excuse to get after those leaves.  The princess made us some tasty chocolate chip pancakes for dinner last night and the kitchen is still intact.  The wife was on a short Japanese-American ladies culture club yesterday and will return today.  They were down near Osaka so I’m anxious to hear how it went.  I hope you all have a great day and fun at York.  I was still in Rhode Island I was going to try to drive down for the day.

Took my old fliver (87 Buick) out for it's  weekly spin this AM to keep the battery up and the tires round.  I drove up one of the canyon roads near here.  I saw three or four deer in the road (all does) near a golf course.  They were just calmly walking in the road.  Luckily I was able to stop and observe them.  Nice to see some wild life near the city.

Celebrating my birthday on Sunday along with my grandson who will be 16 on the 17th.  Mine is on the thirteenth.  We will probably all go out to eat some place.

Got an appointment with tax advisor today who wants to go over our medical expenses to see if we are spending too much.

Friend Larry, brought over a rare recording last night of Ward Kimball and the Firehouse 5 plus 2 dixieland band with introductions by none other than Bing Crosby.  Bing also kibetzed a little with Ward and he sang some songs with the band.  It's on a DVD and has just about all the best tunes from the band.  Ward has passed on now and the band is history but I saw them perform a couple of times.  I have about 6 albums of the group but all on old 33 and one third records.  I would like to get it all on DVD which is available now.

Both of my friends who came over last night are getting ready to start long trips around the country.  Probably won't see them for a month.  Wish my wife and I were in better shape for travel.  Still have some frequent flyer miles that I would like to use.

later,

Ray

DJ - The PSU/Rutgers games stopped in 1995 because that was the end of the contract and it was after PSU entered the Big Ten in 1993. By that time PSU was under contract to play a Big Ten Schedule that allowed for only 3 Non-Conference games, this was later changed to 4 when the NCAA went to a 12 game regular season vs the old 11 games. What ND did or didn't do is no portent to me. PSU never, and I repeat never dictated where other schools chose to hold their Home games. This is factually false.

I will not continue this here as this is a train forum... if you want to continue this discuss come on over to PSU's rivals board... you know where to find it... Wink

I would have agreed with you concerning PSU prior to the bogus sanctions the NCAA sacked upon them, right now The Little Sisters of The Poor could beat them.

As for running into the Big Out House... LOL... that place looks like a giant unflushed toilet when they have the 'Maize' Out!

Minnehaha? Nah they'll handle them pretty fairly... they are like playing ASiWPA, same with IU and Illinois... Purdon't is a little more difficult that the other three.

I have been impressed with what Fitzgerald has done at NW.

Welp, I'm not worrying too much about our entry into the Big 10 - other than Michigan and Ohio State, I think we can keep up with all of them.  And I have no sympathy for PSU - as far as I'm concerned those sanctions weren't enough.  I can't believe they're "relieving" them - I guess the Big 10 commissioner still has some serious clout.

Unfortunately right now Rutgers is stuck with a QB who is a great player during practice and against teams that don't have a good pass rush.  But put pressure on him and he makes boneheaded decisions which cost us games.  Next year he's a senior, and I can't see them replacing him.  So he's gonna cost us some games in our inaugural season in the Big 10.

By the way, we are really gearing up for PSU coming into OUR HOUSE next season.  Much more so than Ohio State and Wisconsin.  When we used to play PSU, they always insisted on playing us at Giants Stadium for our "home" games, which, given how pisspoor our fanbase was back then, pretty much made it a PSU crowd.  No more.  We're gonna have 50K RU fans next year screaming for blood.  You better believe it's gonna be a hostile environment.

You do realize that the HOME team choses where to play their games... not the visiting team. This is why IU chose to play PSU at RFK Stadium in DC (larger stadium = larger gate $$$), same reason Syracuse chose to play PSU in NJ this season... but whatever. Same reason Temple used to play PSU at The Meadowlands, or at Lincoln Financial Field... also why UMD is hosting PSU at M&T Bank Stadium...

Rainy morning.  Did get in 1 1/2 miles this morning after the rain let up.  Off to the Dr. for blood work.  Then down southeast to prepare for wedding and rehearsal and dinner.

Roy and gang.  Will not be surprising you at York this time.  Wedding $$$$ prevent it.  Also, deer season will be in.

Have a good one.

Konnichiwa,

It rained most of the night, but has cleared up nicely this afternoon.  I had a brief three-mile run in the light rain this morning which was quite nice.  However, the rain will push back the raking of the leaves another day or so.  I’ve been running the kids through their schoolwork this morning and now they’re having their piano lessons.  I was able to catch a bit of the TNF game; it looks like the Giants will remain winless.  I'm letting the 12 y/o princess make dinner tonight which is always an adventure.

SP Ray – I’m glad you had a good doctor’s report despite the slight weight gain.  I’m sure you’ll make the necessary adjustments.

DJ Spanky – it’s great to see the photos of the boys having fun, especially with all you’ve been through.

Mike C. – Great job by the grandkids.  You needed that soccer win after the soccer week you had.

The "Big Four Bridge" got it's nickname from the cities that the New York Central served. Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis. The bridge was run by the Louisville & Jeffersonville Bridge Company.

Pretty much the only trains that used the Big Four were NYC.  The B & O, Monon, Milwaukee,  and Southern used the Kentucky And Indiana Terminal Railway bridge, and the Pennsylvania R.R. used it's own bridge. After the NYC & PRR merger in 1968-69, trains of those RRs used the Pennsy bridge.

(Penn Central)

The "Big Four" was closed and has been unused (for rail traffic.) until now.

Evening all!

Finally getting better. Went back to doc Tues evening and got a steroid shot to help my lungs heal up from the bronchitis. Still pretty tired but it worked. Looking forward to York next week but we are on a 6:45 am flight Wed (ugh). John (jefelec) sent me a note that it looks to be another rainy fall York. It's been several years since we had those famous NE sunny cool fall days for York.

We are scheduled to get some much needed rain this coming weekend.

Doug Angel for your friend.

Have a great evening all!

Good morning all,

Cold, for here, this morning.  46 degrees following yesterday's rain.

Got a pretty good report from the doctor yesterday  except for slight weight gain.

Dennis, I saw the Huel Howser show about travel town in Griffith Park with the Live Steamers.  I first went there back in the 60's and I knew a guy back then that had an 0-4-0 switch engine that I rode behind.  They have expanded their layout since the early days.  Originally it was just an oval near where you come in.  There is another live steam outfit in Riverside California at a Park which is a longer run I think than the one in L.A. but not as interesting.  The L.A. club has a big meet every May and operators come from all over to run there.  They also have moved a barn once owned by Walt Disney to the park.  Walt used it as a shop for his Carolwood Pacific live steam backyard railroad.  I would like to see that.

Buckeye, I rode a train over that Big Four Line back around 1962 between Chicago and Cincinati. We were on the New York Central on a train called The James Whitcomb Riley.  I think the B&O also had trains on that line and maybe Illinois Central.  Can't remember what the other one was.

later,

Ray

Morning.  Rainy and chilly.  Just finished 2+ miles.  Off on a busy day before tomorrow evening and rehearsal dinner.  Then gone until late Sat. night.  I'm coming home with dogs and not staying for the IL's mass "over night" is a tiny house. Confused

Jon, you can get inspired to workout real easy.  Give me your Dr.'s contact info.  I'll have him tell you to walk and diet or start taking pre-diabetic pills.  That will get your butt moving.

Have a good one.

Several pictures of the "Big Four Bridge" here in Louisville, Ky. These were taken in April of this year on one of my "walking trips". I was back on it in June with my bicycle. As Buckeye said, there's no access right now from the Indiana side, that ramp is "supposed to be completed" by Nov. 2013.

The lines down the middle are supposed to simulate where the tracks once were.

Aloha from another beautiful day!  Oh Buckeye, that is the very bridge! How cool.

Nice TARDIS ridge last night. Oh, I love the IT stories. Today I had someone tell me - the database seemed to be running kind of slow so I went in and deleted all the empty tables I could find to speed it up. No soup for you!  No more access to the database either. At least I had a pristine backup for once so no one noticed anything...

Buckeye, I travel those bridges in Cincy and Louisville regularly. Glad to know they're being fixed up. The one in the 'ville has seemingly been under construction for a long time. Love the old RR bridge that is still next to it.

The railroad bridge up river from I-65 was called the BIG FOUR BRIDGE.  Apparently four southern railroads used the same bridge across the Ohio.  Currently one can walk across the bridge for a great view of the city and river.  The Indiana end has no access at this time but should have access by this time next year.

Trying to find out when a couple items are slated to ship from Lionel off the Christmas Catalog... unfortunately it appears, as usual, they aren't adding them to the shipping schedule till the actually produce the items. This is really frustrating because a couple items I want people have pre-ordered for me as gifts, now we're back to the 'will it actually be made' waiting game. Oh well.

Dealing with the ramifications of a company redesigning their backend database and dropping fields that we use... UGH!!!

Brent,
Isn't working in IT great?Wink  I see it all the time too with updates/upgrades getting pushed out with no prior testing only to cause hospital-wide issues.  Just last night I had to deal with a complication of switching from a physical server to a virtual server that handles background jobs.

Then, there are the users that have little knowledge of the applications and even the PC that they use.Bang Head  Some of the calls that I get really make me question things.

I didn't think an IT position could be that stressful.

The problem we run into is that people try to 'help' the system. If they would just leave things alone and follow the process everything would be fine, but NOOOOOO they have to change things because they THINK they are doing it correctly. Bang Head And when they 'help' the system all they are doing is causing my team 1+ day of work to fix their screwup... IMHO if you can't RTFM you don't belong here.

I also love when I'm told "Well you need to think out-side-the-box and anticipate that someone is going to do something and you need to code to handle it" Bang HeadTongue TiedHuh?ConfusedConfusedHmm I'm sorry, but I can't just check my brain at the door!

Turns out we had a total of nine servers go down last night during the 11-7 shift.  All because someone that pushes papers all day saw a long term $$ saving by going to virtual machines.Bang Head

Then there are some of the end users that are seemingly incapable of a simple task like logging into Windows. My favorites are the MDs that call screaming that their PC won't turn on.  I've gone on several of these calls, and it's either someone else unplugged the PC, accidentally shut the power strip off, or simply wasn't smart enough to turn the monitor on...

The way I see it is simply this; their stupidity is my job security.Surprise

My thought is that if a job requires use of a PC, all employees should be A+ certified at a minimum.  Even some common sense would go a long way in and of itself.Wink

Good evening all,

Last year about this "my" soccer boys were starting a run to semi-state.  This year it did not even get to a walk as they were eliminated in the first round 4-0.  The game was not even that close as our kids were totally outmatched tonight.   Going to watch grandkids tomorrow.  Work was quiet.

Ohayō,

Today’s weather is warm but a little cloudy as well.  I had a quick three-mile run this morning before enjoying some morning coffee with the wife.  Yesterday afternoon we took the kids to a neat park located about 20 minutes from the base.  It had a decently sized roller slide and some zip lines for the kids.  It was free and the kids loved it.  Of course, I enjoyed it as well.  I may get an early start on those leaves today as there are quite a few out there.

I hope you are all having a great day.

Sunny and low 70's today.  It was real hard to go back into the office after lunch.

DJ - I had my own round with 'improved' software today - didn't win, either.  I now have an I.T. work ticket open.  Good thing it was only reference material that I was trying to get, and the matter can wait a couple of days.

Won a partial track cleaning car on e-bay tonight.  It has a good gear train in it, which will supply needed parts that have not been re-popped that I need.

About all for now.

Some days I feel good like yesterday and some days I'm tired all day, are other retirement age men the same?

Dennis  --  I can relate to how you feel, I think it's just part of the aging program.  I do know that once I get to the Y and start working out I feel ten times better.  The problem is finding the motivation to get to the Y  --  it's not the work out that's the problem it's me getting there.  Now, if we were like ol' Slick and his harem we might feel differently but I'm not about to try that route Laugh
