Afternoon All!
Feeling pretty good today! Called the round house at Knotts this morning, to let them know I wouldn't be in today. The steam engine goes down today and only runs on the week-ends now until December. The Goose will run on weekdays till then. The small engine is also out of operation until Thanksgiving, due to Halloween Haunt. Found out they gave me a new nickname at Knott's, "Misstep". (not a very glamorous way getting hurt on the railroad......."falling out of the cab" !)
Jack, The Chief contacted me about sending him a couple hundred of those pictures with an autograph, told me he was going to be using them for some kind of self motivation program in Roseyville. Since I am left handed, I said it would have to wait until I got the cast off. We agreed to cancel the program. (He said he was just going to send me round trip tickets to make a personal appearance instead. Then we would make a trip to York, before I came home. So, I suggest you better get a refund from him ASAP.
Lion88, Found the perfect solution for you regarding Christina and the layout. Available at Lowes for about $20, also serves as a panic button to shut power off of everything. I have a couple for things around the house, and also outside applications. Fife, That's certainly a novel idea about the cast. However, I just don't think it will work. When it would get to Brent's place it would probably never leave. It would become another item in his collection. Doug, The ILL Museum has always been special to me. Was the first prototype train museum I attended. Great pictures! Pat, That is such a great idea! I wonder how good it would be at a train show, even offer to make custom puzzles. It would really be cool if you would post a couple of pictures. Had a nice phone call from Ray yesterday. Sounded like he and his family had a great day. Said they spent a lot of time in the pool, maybe he is thinking of trying to duplicate the record set this weekend by Diana Nyad. Going to get busy before I run out of time, have a good day all, AND stay healthy!!!

DJSpanky Howdy all! Glad to see that the weather is finally beginning to cool down. Got some more work done on the viaduct this weekend. And got a bunch of text down for a new thread on that project. I realized a little while ago that I never updated the steps I had taken for a bunch of the work. In fact my last update was probably the fall of 2009. I actually have a bunch of pictures from then, but life intruded as in that November my dad did his header down the stairs, leading to lots of family stuff that took precendence. Fortunately, as I said, I did take pictures, so I'll be able to show the step by step procedures I used. Hopefully I'll get that out in the next week or so. Here's a tease from this weekend - one of the curves with the roadbed blocks newly cut and sanded sitting on it. RockIsland52 Greetings from rainy Cape Ann Taxachusetts......it has been quite the busy past few weeks. We just got back home last night and are really dragging. That is pushing 4,000 driving miles since August 15!!!! PS: DougM.....I took Interstate 80/90 all the way to I 355 North to avoid the Chicago Skyway and the downtown morass and really made good time. How ya been Jack? 4K miles in two weeks - that's a lot of driving. Did you take 84 to get down to 80? laz 57 DJ SPANKY, WOW what a game last nite. Saw highlights on ESPN. Back and forth nail biter. Wish Rutgers would have won. You and me both! Considering we lost 3 of 4 starters in our defensive secondary to the NFL last year, we still managed to rein in Carr (Fresno State's QB) to some extent. If we'd have had 3-4 games under our belt, we would have won that game.

Spanky.......impressive work. Are you taking orders? We took I 90 all the way through Cleveland and then hooked up with I 80 via 480. Either way (90W-84S-81S-80W or 90W-71S-480W-80W) the driving distance and driving time is nearly exactly the same Westbound from Taxachusetts to Illinois.
Spanky......re the use of power saws......Pat suggested the same to DonB about making crossword puzzles, and I fear that Brent will take him up on that after he electrocutes himself, trying to fabricate an ant-Christina power cut-off to his layout. Don said Brent is collecting casts, and I believe him!
Pat........thank you for the kind words you posted on FB to my Pam's victory photo with Maximus after they received their Canadian obedience title. I am so proud of her. Fife......Maximus is tri-lingual, understands his obedience commands with hand signals, German, and English, though German is his first language for obedience. The reason for the use of German has its roots in canine protection work. You don't want the bad guys to know what you are telling the dog to do when the bad guy's intent is not good. Pam is looking up the German words for "Take out the garbage" to use on me.
Re my recent 4,000 miles of road trips.......2,500 miles of it were with the two grandchildren in the back seat out to Elgin IL and back. No grandchildren were harmed in the execution of this road trip.
And DougM.....sorry to hear about your loss of that tree. The same storm hit Elgin Friday afternoon, and we wound up driving in it on I90 at the tail end of it. The winds were high and the day became night for a time, the downpour was absolutely torrential. Some nice accidents on I90 East requiring several emergency vehicles, ambulances, and an army of State police. I ran over a bunch of debris from the accidents but fortunately did not get a flat.
Don........the Chief is not answering any of my requests for a refund. I certainly hope your rehabilitation is going well and that the upcoming x-rays satisfy the Docs' expectations and timeline. Don't overdo the exercises. You don't want a setback. I realize what a pain in the (pick your injured body part) is. Prayers that your recovery goes without a hitch.
SJ........I hear that snow is in the forecast for Michigan and that you are breaking out the dogs, the sleds, and your snowblower.
Well, for those of us with kids and grandkids........the little ones are back to school in my neck of the woods. Mothers are weeping all over the place, bemoaning the fact that the little monsters are growing up way too fast. From my perspective .
I am hopelessly behind on my POT reading. Please don't take offense. My prayers for those who are in need or have family or friends in a bad way.
Jack
PS: AF Ray, HudsonJohn, and JoeyD.......it looks like the Yankees are going to fall short and not make the playoffs this season. My condolences. Same to you, Chuck with the Indians. Looks like SJ's Tigers and the Red Sox may meet in the postseason.
IF IT WON'T COME LOOSE BY TAPPING ON IT, DON'T TRY TO FORCE IT. USE A BIGGER HAMMER.
Don - looks interesting. I will have to check it out.Actually I have never had a hard cast, and something I intend to never have. When I broke my arm and wrist they only put me in 'soft' casts. And I was informed by TheQ that keeping them was not appropriate (cannot remember her scientific/psychological term).

When I was stationed in Germany back in 1989 - 1991 the base I was at was where The German National Army had their guard dog training facility. The things they taught their shepherds to do was amazing!
Don, so they gave you the name "misstep". Might have been worse. We had a guy on the SP that they called "sky walker". He was a young hoghead down in El Centro and thought he was going to hit a gasoline truck stalled on a crossing. He put the train in emergency and joined the birds by jumping out of the cab window and he broke his leg too. Funny thing was that the train stopped before it hit the truck.
Played with the trains this morning until the temp hit 90 in the garage and bailed out. I ran my N&W Y6B which I haven't run enough. That's the 2-8-8-2 that I have attached to my coal train next to the back wall. Today I put it on a general merchandise freight for a change which is a lot more colorful. All those black hoppers get kind of boring after a while on the coal train.
Heard that they moved the UP 4014 back and fourth a little at the fairground yesterday to make sure it would roll. They have taken off quite a bit of the valve gear including all the pistons and valves out of the cylinders, the main rods, eccentic rods and some other linkage. About the only rods left were the big connecting rods between all the wheels.
Temperature right around the century mark this afternoon. Just been laying low and watching the congressional hearings about what to do in Syria. I know this is all very serious but it's very boring to listen to all those politicians B.S. each other. I think most of the substanative talks will take place in private hearings. All the hoopla today was for the cameras.

Scroll sawing custom pictures at a train show I think would go over great, espesilly if they were of trains. I have several patterens of trains. I will do one up in the near future and post it.

Don if you look at this issue of CTT :
You will see that I was years ahead of you buddy!!
Kent Johnson after he received my suggestion said, "And it is safe, too." You don't suppose they get ideas that are not electrically safe do you?
Here is the fob that is still used. CTT sent me a new lanyard for my idea.
If you look real closely you can see the white power cord heading toward the wall, but the plug in the socket is black; the on/off switch. I got the idea from seeing them used for Christmas tree lighting.

Good evening all,
Boys won 1-0 in OT tonight. Good day at work turned to hash at home as nothing went right.
Mike C. from Indiana
Good Evnin' Y'all From Muggy Taxachusetts,
Being on the road for a couple of weeks has really put me behind in everything.
Got home and paid bills. Discovered that the carpenter did not come by and finish shoring up some parts of my deck he promised to complete while I was gone; guess he does not want to get paid the balance I owe him (a third of the total, not chump change) so I rattled his cage today.
The son held down the fort while we were gone but needs some serious instruction on housekeeping. He also forgot to take the festering garbage to the curb; and so the garage stinks to high heaven and the flies are loving it. He neglected to water the wife's outdoor plants that are now looking anemic, much to her consternation. He seemed disappointed that he was evicted from the laundry room when we returned. And he apparently had opened a window on the first floor, shut it eventually, but then did not lock it......burglars missed their opening. I suppose I should be grateful the house is still standing and our belongings are intact.
The inside of my family transport vehicle will require a bit of work to eradicate all of the evidence of the grandchildren spending 36 hours back there when we were driving out to visit the great grandparents and back. No surprise.
Co-pilot Grammy was feeding the little ones nonstop: peaches, nectarines, oranges, bananas, grapes, cookies, chips, crackers, candy, and also gave them lemonade to wash it all down.. The rear/side windows and rear seating area are slimed. The ten year old lost a baby tooth and got blood on the seats and door.......the advantages of leather!!!! On the plus side, no one threw up or peed on the seats or on the carpeting. And the headphones, DVDs, rear screen, and the remote control are all still in my possession and operable.
Nonetheless, I wouldn't trade any of these minor inconveniences for anything. I am blessed, and now I have a lot of ammo to tease the son, the grandkids, and the enabling wifey!!!
Later, gang. Bedtime beckons.
PS: Sorry SJ that my Red Sox edged your Tigers tonight. I think the Tigers are the best team in the American league, will take the AL pennant, and will take the World Series to boot..
Buckeye Riveter Don if you look at this issue of CTT : You will see that I was years ahead of you buddy!! I got the idea from seeing them used for Christmas tree lighting.
I got the idea from seeing them used for Christmas tree lighting.
Buckeye, Your're right this is the patio outlet which we also use for our Christmas lights.
Seriously, I did not remember where I originally found these, but Buckeye is right! I first saw this remote in the CTT magazine. What impressed me the most was the rating, the fact it was weather-proof, and the price. I bought one for my layout, and then subsequently two more for other layouts. And, I have found them useful in other areas also. THANKS FOR THE INITIAL FIND !
Good Morning from Blueberryhill.................
It is a cool 52 degrees. Foggy. Going up to 78 today with sunshine.
Today is a busy day. I have the usual chores to do and a project to do. I will be busy most of the morning. Then, lunch and a nice nap.
Indians won another game last night. Go Tribe.
Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.

Aloha from a sunny and warm northeastern Illinois. I have called around to see if I can get someone out to get rid of the half-down tree but no joy yet. Spanky, what is the radius on the curve in your bridge?Don, I installed that shut-off when the kids were younger - got the idea from a CTT article of about five years ago. Wonder who was the author... Jack, that's quite a haul to your side to Elgin and back. Glad the inlaws are doing well. So the best way was to go west out of MA through NY and down to OH, IN etc

Morning all,
Good news about my sister in Virginia. She is back in the nursing home, out of the hospital and is breathing on her own now with no supplemental oxygen needed. BIL will take her to her next doctor appointment in the car. Will be her first outing in weeks.
Wife went in for blood test at out patient part of hospital this morning. We both had late breakfast because of test. I had a big bowl of cream of rice (much better than grits and I like them both) and fried eggs with toast.
V8 Dennis, glad you got the radio fixed. I need to put a CD player in my Honda now that it has been painted.. It came with a tape player but that has worn out. Play mostly CD's now at home.
Hot weather still with us.
Hey y'all !
I'm back, was super busy for awhile which left me to pooped to read or post. Also am now on the road to recovery from some kind of crud that struck Saturday evening with a temp of 103* then slept all day Sunday, SWMBO coerced me to pay a visit to Urgent Care on Monday and my primary care provider on Tuesday. I was so sick that I let her drive, let's just say that should I ever have my license pulled I will definitely be buying bus passes.
Sounds as if Don is doing well, just don't push it to hard.
Gotta agree with y'all on this heat, it sucks ! It hasn't been below 100* during the day for weeks now.
Time to find my new pills and snooze for a bit.
Will take awhile to catch-up.

Heading to the land of the giants tomorrow, Lima, Oho. Lima used to build the biggest steam engines.
While I'm there I need to see my new Roseyville Raider.
Took day off to accompany wife for doctor's visit. Good trip. Busy outside trimming trees and inside printing programs. Hopefully quiet day at work tomorrow.
Good evening,
How is everyone doing? I’m typing this from the airport in Canberra, Australia. It’s Thursday evening here but I will not arrive back into Tokyo until 6:30 AM Friday morning. The past few days in Canberra were nice. It is winter here, but the weather was in the low-60s and sunny while I was here. It was a fantastic break from the heat and humidity of Japan. The workload while I was here was not too strenuous and I was able to enjoy this fine city. The Australian Railway Museum was located only a few miles from my hotel, but unfortunately it is only open on Sundays so I was unable to visit it. There were no hobby shops located near my hotel either, but I still enjoyed some great food and beer. And, the Australian people are always pleasant to be around.
AF Ray – The Yankees are still hanging in there; we just need some more losses from the other guys. I may need to buy one of those sets as well, but I am also considering the Subway Series Set.
Jack – Welcome back! Don’t count out the Yankees yet, there right in the mix for a WC slot.
Cheers,
Joe

Good Mornin' Y'all From Rainy Cape Ann Taxachusetts,
The rain arrived overnight and will be moving off soon. The temperatures won't reach 70 today, the sure sign that the Summer's heat is behind us and the A/C-fueled electric bills will be fast declining.
Have you ever noticed that a wife will make you believe that something on her honey-do list is more important to her than all of the other items on the list. She will remind you incessantly of that one particular item, will observe that you don't have the know how to get it done right, and she will want to hire it done starting with a scorched earth approach (overkill, rip out and start over). But when that paramount item on the honey-do list is completed beyond her highest expectations, you hear NOTHING? NADA! ZIP! ZERO!!! Yup, it is true. In this instance it is our front lawn which for various reasons looked deplorable. This year I assaulted the entire lawn and, through the judicious use of chemicals and water, have created a lawn that three weeks ago her friends commented was absolutely beautiful. I stood there staring at her and clearing my throat as if to say "I told you so!" But I didn't get a peep out of her except to thank her friends for the compliment. And I have not heard a word since.
Spanky......the simplicity of your comment that Tyler and Corey are back in school says it all. Life is good.
RaySP......I was glad to read that your sister in Va. is out of the hospital. I can't understand why your car's CD player didn't last more than a few decades.
DougDG........I bet your wife's driving scared all of the germies away! Hope the meds do their trick and you are feeling better.
RaySP, DougDG, DonB, and V8Dennis........you left coast guys are tough. A little 100+ degree weather won't slow you down.
V8 Dennis.......I too have had issues with my car's AM reception and the dealer has been unable to rectify the static while the car was under warranty. I am glad you got it fixed for short money. I suspect a faulty ground or a bad connection to the antenna since FM and satellite radio work just fine. But I am now off warranty and will make do with what works.
Buckeye......thank you for that pic. The finish on that steam engine with the beautiful drivers is better than the finish on my car.
DougM.......the last time I tackled tree removal I had a stack of unseasoned "soft" wood that was not suitable for the fireplace (creosote). Wound up staring at the pile for a few years until a friend said he wanted it and hauled it away.
JoeyD........the Yankees have won 8 of their last 10 but indeed need some help from the teams in front of them to make the Wild Card. When the Red Sox get Bucholz back, it may help......but I am not confident he will be in any condition to help as much as the starters we already have in the rotation. SJ...........sorry about last night's Red Sox 20-4 drubbing of the Tigers, looked like batting practice at Fenway. Chuck and LAZ.....the Indians MUST finish ahead of the Yankers!!!!
MikeC.......I wish you wouldn't post things like your trimming bushes and trees around the homestead. Mine need it too one more time before the snows fly and you are making me feel guilty.
JimmyT........I got to wondering if they have a 12 step program for Mustang and Probe owners with OCD.
Later, gang.

Bought some pulled pork meat from Costco yesterday unflavored and thought I could make some barbeque with it but it has too much fat content. Trying to cook it out now. Will never buy that stuff again. Has enough fat content to clog the arteries of an elephant.
Dougnota grump, I hear you about the heat. Sorry you are suffering. Afraid to look at my AC bill this month.
High school girls tied 2-2 tonight. My fall season could have started better. We lost 4-3. I cost us a penalty kick with a hand ball in the box. Good day at work. Long meeting tomorrow. Friday Night Under the Lights is tomorrow. Can not wait. My SuperBowl.
DENNIS......take the top off the del Sol and go for a late cruise. It will make the world seem better. :-) JACK.
Jack,
I tried that program, but it just made things worse.
Jim
Konbanwa,
I arrived safely back to Japan this morning. The flights were smooth, but the nearly three-hour ride home from Narita was not so much fun. I am not a fan of the traffic out here. I dropped off some paper work at the office and then came home to spend time with the family. I will be home for a week and then next Saturday I take off for Newport, RI (Jack’s area). I will be there for six weeks. It has been rainy and gloomy out here today so the wife is making a pot roast for dinner.
Jack – Your Sox got a big win last night. I’m not worried yet though.
Sayonara,
Mornin' boys. Sunny & 59 here in the Mid-Atlantic region. My RAVENS got stampeded last night. They looked like goldfish out of water.

Hi GUYZ,
Been real busy here sealing driveways for myself and all the neighbor ladies. Got to do 2 more today then have nice fire and cookout with WIFE and MINNIE DOG. Been having great running and biking weather here the past week. Seeing quite a few deers and turkeys in the morning whilst on the runns and bikes.
I registered on line for YORK but didn't get my badge yet. I want to be wearing it ala SIR JAMES, to break it in. Any YUZ GUYZ get yours yet?
FIFE, WOW talk about getting blown out.... OUCH!
JACK, CONGAs on MAXIMUS and your WIFEs endeavors up in Canada. GOOD JOB!!! Yes the TRIBE will finish ahead of those YANKERs. They're to old.
CHUCK, GO TRIBE!!!! I have to break out the BOB FELLER and ROCKY CALIVITO cards and put them on the shrine for good luck.
BUCKEYE, in that second pick are they vacuum sweepers? What are those tan things?
V8 RAY, stay frosty out there and watch those sand storms what are they called HABOOBS?
CHUCK & BUCKEYE, TGIF!!!!
Stay frosty my friends,

Morning all. Got back yesterday afternoon. Immediately to Town Hall and then Wifey duty [take her shopping till late].
Off to farms to do some damage to the squirrels who are knowing holes in our deer feeders.
Briefly read over past posts. Prayers for those who need them. Especially Dougsnotagrump. Please take care. Seems Fifedum is all in order [saw the highlights of the Raiders]. Brent is spoiling his crew.
Go Yankees. Please get in there.
Talked to Shake and Bake. Kay washing his hair. SPOILED and taking advantage of his situation.
