Blank twice, then it worked?  Went out to eat after work and picked up the vinyl flooring for the guys to install - this way we know it's the pattern we wanted and we have it in hand.  Char's uncle died and funeral is Saturday.  I'm set to work OT, so she and our daughter will go.  Prayers for Jack and Victoria.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Dear TSA,

Be ready with extra help at LAX.  It is going to take several hours to sort through all of the Chief's souvenirs, food, drink, grits and Ray's silverware.  Laugh

Aloha from a hot and sunny Chicago. Yesterday, the heat index flirted with a new high but I was in deliciously cool air conditioning all day and even through class - by the time, I left at 9 pm, it was down in the high 80s. Growing up without a/c, like most of you, sure makes me appreciate it.

Boy, the Chief's trip sure sounds like a wonderful adventure.
Prayers for the youngster and oldster, Jack.

Hot for here, not unusual but hot just the same.

The temp is 84, going into the 90s. humidity must be 200.

Maybe it will ripen some tomatoes for me. I got them planted late because of the frost we had in May. So I wait. We have been enjoying garden fresh cukes and green beans though. No train news yesterday except our chat last night.

Dennis  --  those are states I've visited on my motorcycle with our youngest son over the last 7 years.  He saves some of his vacation time for me and we just have a ball.  Now that he's married and the fact that he changed jobs two years ago he has less time off but next year he's back up to three weeks time off.

Before he got married he shared with his wife to be that he wanted to continue riding with me and she supports him 100% as does my wife.  I know both ladies are worried about our safety when we travel so we check in often.  I think I've got about two more years of riding left in me but I still enjoy it as much as I did 44 years when I threw my right leg over my first bike, that's a nice long run Wink  It's hilarious when we see trains on our travels as he's the first one to make sure I see it!!

Hey,

Just a couple of last thoughts while waiting at the airport.  Ole Shake and Bake was the perfect host.  He does set a hard pace to keep up with though.  I'm exhausted!  He didn't bug me a lot about eating grits,  I only had to eat them twice, (just to keep up my image).  He still thinks I really like them, so don't anyone let on otherwise.  I told him my favorite food was those chocolate Buckeyes.

I took some pictures of a couple of houses on the shore, and have sent them back to Pam.  Think I might sell the lake house and buy out here.  I mean it is really nice!

When he took me down to the harbor area, I was surprised to see so many NS engines there, unfortunately they looked like they were headed to the scrap pile.  At one location there were 3 NS engines being pushed by 1 UP.  Each NS engine had a black flag on it, which I understand means unfit for service.

While I was railfaning the trains were soooo loooong, these folks know how to put together a train!

I was concerned about getting to the departure gate for my flight.  At the entrance to the airport the police were stopping every car upon entry, and were looking for something.  Shake and Bake told me not to worry, that he had a call the night before, and they wanted to know if I was leaving as scheduled today.  He said he assured them I was.  Wonder what that was all about.

When I first got to his place, he told me I had to use the Porta Potty out back!  At first, I didn't like that idea.  But, after using it once it was pretty nice.  It even had a door that closed, and paper in it instead of magazines.  I might have to check on getting one these when I get home, especially for the Box.

Looks like they are ready to board the plane, so gotta go.  (My seat number is 84 and they are boarding the big numbers first.)  Will try and post some pictures when I get home.  (Don't forget a seperate thread.)

Ray,

Not knowing exactly where you are located, but what about John Wayne Airport in Orange County ? I've used it a few times when I couldn't get the flight I wanted out of San Diego. The airport itself couldn't be anywhere near as crazy as LAX normally is. Bang Head

Chief, Enjoyed the visit. Safe travels home.

Doug, John Wayne is just about as far as LAX from us.  I think Burbank is closer.

Chief, how in the heck did you get a non stop flight from LAX  to Charlotte?  The best I can do is a one stop to just about any place on the East Coast besides NYC or DC.

You must have done your railfanning around the harbor area it sounds like.  I used to work some jobs down there when I was with the SP/UP.  It was fun to be around all those big ships and enjoy the sea breezes in the summer.  Those NS dirty units you saw remind me of how the old SP units were looking before the merger with U.P.  I think U.P. learned how to run dirty units from the S.P.

Looking forward to some photos from the Roseyville rascal when he gets home.  There were so many things I wanted to hear about from the Chief but just not enough time.

Don, great job on entertaining our man from Rolesville.  Now you can get a well deserved rest if Kay will let you skip a few honey do jobs.

Sure would be nice if we could visit him on his turf.  I would spend the whole time fishing at the lake house.  I used to go salt water fishing with my brother near the Cheasapeake Bay Bridge/tunne when I went home but he doesn't go much anymore.  Too expensive to operate boat and fish limits too small.

Got oil and filter change in the old 87 Buick today.  Way over due.  Got prices on repairs needed.  Need new set of tires.  Old ones just rotted out from the sun and not using enough.  Need new rubber boot on right front drive axle.  One shock is leaking.  If I threw in a cheap paint job, I could spend around $1500 on a car that may only be worth $1000 if that.  I think it's going to sit a while longer.  I forgot, another grand for a new air conditioner compressor.

Too many chores this morning to get out to the garage before it got to hot so have to skip train running today.  Have to think about a dinner tonight that is not labor intensive. (if I have to cook)

Chief should be singing "Tuck Me to Sleep in My old Kentucky Home" (make that North Carolina) by now.

later,

Ray

Buckeye, STOP messing around with my flights!!  I'm stuck here in Charlotte and should have been home by now!  All due to weather.  They told me I could go back on the return flight, but that rascal Shake & Bake, finagled and was to send that Porta Potty home with me.  So if I were to go back it would get uncomfortable.

Good Evening

Got the Chief off to the airport this morning.  His trip was GREAT!  A little busier than I had planned because I had to make all the officials aware that I was bringing him into their jurisdiction and that took time and planning.  That's why I didn't get to post much on the web.  (While he had hijacked my computer)

I only had one problem, yesterday I called to make arrangements for the company to pick up the Porta Potty, but they didn't want it back!  Something about radiated waste products.  So what am I going to do with it?  I was able to convince the airlines to take it with him, as it would most likely be advantageous to have for inflight use, and not end up with an aircraft grounded for decontamination.  So they took it.  Actually Chief was rather pleased, apparently he had grown attached to it.

Seriously, I know the trip was hard on him, he was suffering from a cold most of the time.  But his resolve kept him going!  (All in all I had been looking forward to this trip for a long time, really hated to see it end.  Frank is a "true" southern gentlemen in all sense of the term.  It is a pleasure to know him.)

Konbanwa,

I’ve had a busy past couple of days and this is the first time I had time to post.  It’s still been hot and humid, and we just had a nice thunderstorm run through.  I sold some FasTrack on eBay and plan to sell some more as I think I decided to make the switch to RMT’s Super Snap.  I hope RMT produces some more soon as the K-Line stuff being sold on eBay is pretty pricey.

Chief – I hope you made it home safely.

Joe

Mornin' Fellas

First day I have felt decent since Sunday. Hope everyone is doing well. Looks like Chief had fun in CA! Looks like Buckeye and Chuck had fun with Chief's return flight! Laugh

Haven't had time to get into the train room due to illness, sister's family's visit on Saturday, and now prepping for Christina's birthday. It is really amazing how 2 years have flown by. My little girl continues to impress and inspire me everyday and I couldn't be prouder to call her my daughter.

Looking forward to getting back into the train room and get back to this wiring thing!

At Town Hall.  Busy day.  Haven't even unpacked.  Buckeye screwed with the weather and made Charlotte back up a the flights.  More details when I get time.

Wanted you to see Don's house and facilities.  Was a little crowded so I slept on the patio.  As you see, the beige building is the main house.  The blue is the facilities.  Don and Kay slept in the beige house.  CA is a place that is a little expensive to live.  On a train engineer's salary, they are doing pretty good to have this house and facilities.  Their neighbors are not as fortunate as Don and Kay are.  They do not have a Model T to drive.  Most of the neighbors ride donkeys.

Good morning all,

Glad our favorite Tar Heel made it back to Chitlin Switch yesterday.  Must have been tough dragging that porta potty.

Buckeye, that was naughty messing with the weather and holding up the Chief in Charlotte. Gonna have to send Jeb Stuart up your way on a raid.

Chief, hope you feel better soon in your own digs.  Have some of that Eastern N.C. Bar-B-Que.  That will fix you up

Afternoon All.

Fife, You will discover the "Granchild Malady", when they are at your house all of the days plans go right out the window. Yesterday ours was here so my sprinkler system maintenance got shutdown, today I am just to sore. He's gettin' to big for Grampa to wrestle with.

I'm surprised that niether Don nor Chief passed on some info that we discovered while visiting the Santa Fe Depot in San Diego. We discovered why the state budget is such a mess. None of us knew when the depot was built so Don asks an employee there, he said it was built in 1912. Now that was not the "Pearl of Wisdom", but what followed was and I quote"It's almost 100 years old". Whistling

Chief, Start resting up for your next trip.

Don, If you and Kay come down for "Cruising Grand" let me know, we can all have supper and try to ignore the Mariachi's. Headphones

Was the chef for "The Better Half's" hen party today, they done & gone so it's time to finish cleaning up the kitchen. Jambalaya w/shrimp, chicken and andouille sausage.Dinner

Later all

Good job Chuck!!!  I knew the $4.00 we paid for the modification to the snow cannon would work to screw up summer weather in NC.  BTW, how is our mosquito farm doing?  I can't wait to send them to Roseyville for some fun with the Chief.

I just realized that Roseyville government kept running while the Chief was gone. This means only one thing, someone in Roseyville has graduated from the 8th grade.Laugh  I wonder who it is?  Question
