Hey KEV.........looks like I will have to use your leaf burning photos as my screen saver for the rest of the Fall.  By the way, I like to see you live dangerously.........leaf burning pile right next to your seasoned fireplace wood pile (and structure).  The only thing missing from the photo was a 5 gallon can of gas.  LaughThumbs UpBeer  Jack, I am surprised you missed the fire prevention garden hose in the first picture. Safety first. Wink  I have been watching the fire and sipping on a beer to make sure all is well. BTW, Brian got his truck back from the body shop to repair the deer hit and they did a fine job fixing it up. Yes

LAZ......after hearing of your "60 pound bow pull exercise" you might be better off just letting Minnie run the deer into the ground while you follow up from the rear.  Then you can just saunter up to them a nail them.  No one will be the wiser, and you will finally be able to brag that you got a buck with a bow instead of a gun.  Laugh   Did he get one with a GUN or anything last year???????Huh?  Smile, Wink & Grin

Heres a pic of his hunting adventure last year.

Great Evening All!

Just saw an amazing game in which the Yankees were down 2 to 1 in the bottom of the ninth and pinch hitting Raul Ibanez hits a home run to tie it up! It gets better. He comes to the plate in the bottom of the 12th inning with the score tied 2 to 2 and hits another home run to win the game (sorry fifedog).

Later.

Good night.  Caught up on Blue Bloods and Jersey Girl on TWC Demand.  Missed them last week when cable box went bottoms up.

Prayers for Tyler.

Kev, will answer from here.  Tried link and it "bottomed out".  BTW: saw something on news about some folks being "screwed over" at their work place.  I said they like Walmart [got examples of them right here in Wake Co. stores messing with employees hours and etc.] and some others need the union.

Got early morning breakfast meeting [yes, free meal but still watching diet].

LAZ, getting ready for gun season to come in Sat.  Starts Sat and goes thru Jan 1.  Black powder is in and has been since Sat. week.  Kill 6 deer.  Two bucks, two hunter's choice and two does.  Next year, two bucks and 4 does.  Forcing hunters to remove more does to cut population down.

Sleep tight.

Hello all

Back at work for the first 7 day shift of the season. On nights this week. First one makes for a long day. Got up after 10AM Wed and will not go to sleep until after 6AM Thurs.

Motorcycle left on Tuesday. A friend who had to give his up recently due to financial reasons took it off my hands. Still couldn't get spark out of it. Prob something simple, but I decided not to spend any more time on it. Wasn't comfortable riding it anyway. Motorcycles just aren't my thing. I had very little into it and my friend was happy to get it.

'65 Hardtop got the front bearings repacked yesterday. A messy but fun job and now a little less play in the steering.

Couple that looked at renting the house found another place. I think the landlords have it listed too high for it's size. Oh well, guess I'm stuck there a bit longer.

JimT - glad to see the 302 made it ok and that it's worth fixing! Have fun w/ it!

Kev - nice ride!

RIJack - I'm using this move to pair down a lot of things. I have a bad habit of getting too many projects going at once and am trying to focus for a change. Automotive projects are down to just the two Corvairs. Some of the radios will be sold off and even a couple of the trains. With a few exceptions, if I haven't touched it in two years it can probably go.

Prayers for Tyler, Jerry, and BOC's friend.

Chance of snow here tomorrow night?

Good morning. It's 65° with 100% humidity and patchy fog. It'll be partly cloudy with a high of 88°.

I'm not feeling good today. Chest pain and lower back pain are having their way with me and I don't want to do anything that requires movement. Looks like no work of any kind today unless something changes.

Good morning from North Central IL.

COLD at 39 degrees and I don't know or care what it is going to. Can't do anything about it anyway. Indifferent We had a nice fire in the fireplace last night.

Going to run to the JC Whitney warehouse store and see if I can get a bed mat for the Silverado then to the post office to send a package to the Chief. This will be after Cheerios and a Pepsi for breakfast.

Chief it is too bad for those people at those department stores. They went there thinking the companies cared for them. Poor fools know better now. Dunce  If more of those stores had kept unions in place they would not be so fast to kick their employees in the head.    Sad It is all about the share holders and money. The BIG BOXES come into town and drive out all of the true small business with the promise of all of the jobs they will create and then slap their employees in the head. JMHO  BTW update: Package is on the way. Mischief

Blownout Cyl sorry for your wife's loss.

Good Mornin' Y'all From Crystal Clear 50s Taxachusetts,

Overnight someone flipped a switch and the sun has returned!  I thought the sun had gotten lost!  Our first frost is forecast for overnight Friday night with the temps dipping to 33, but after that the overnight temps will be back up in the 40s.  I had been thinking about covering the wifey's potted Impatiens and Portulacas as they are still flowering, throwing a lot of color, and are doing quite well......but in my inimitable style, I will probably procrastinate and let nature take its course with the wife's flowers (RIP).

Like SJ, I set the thermostat and let the inside temps remain a comfortable 70 degrees.  That is a strategic move on my part to keep the wife, a cold baby, quiet and away from the thermostats.  I fully expect that this Winter's heating bills will be worse than ever since there have been increased rumblings on the news that this Winter's heating costs will be up 20%  versus 2011-2012.  Two reasons: higher heating oil prices and a colder-than-last-year forecast.  Last year was a comparitively mild one, only got about 14" of snow versus an annual average of 44".

Maybe a strategically placed space heater or two is in my future for this Winter since the electric costs up my way are more reasonable versus a year ago.  Better to lower the thermostats and just heat where we spend most of our time.  The electric demand (versus the electric generating capacity) in the Northeast has moderated steadily since 2008.  Reason: the closure of manufacturing plants (lumber and paper products primarily in Maine and Northern New Hampshire) that were running on 100% electricity.  Sadly, those jobs and plants may not return.

Alex Karras, RIP.  I loved that guy as a Detroit Lions player and an actor (Mongo, Blazing Saddles).

Spanky.....I hope that Tyler's stay in the hospital is a very short one but was glad to hear that the Sloan Docs are not concerned, that this stuff is to be expected.  Feel bad for Tyler and your family, but caution is the order of the day. Angel continue.

Jeffrey........hope you are feeling better as I type this. Angel

BOC......I was sorry to hear about the passing of your friend's wife.  I am certain your visit with your wife was appreciated far more than you know. Angel

KEV.......I have yet to build a fire in our fireplace this year but may do so Friday night for the ambience and to make sure the chimney isn't playing host to any critters (birds) that may have managed to remove the cap.  It has happened before.  I can usually tell something has run amok if the draw seems weak or I hear the telltale flapping of wings up there once the fire gets rolling.  Yes, we have gotten birds in the house before, years ago.  My current inventory of seasoned firewood is OK but not enough to last the Winter.  Current local prices for firewood:  $150 per face cord, dumped not delivered and stacked.  The vendors always claim "seasoned" but that term seems to mean quite different things to the sellers versus the buyers. Bang Head

JoeyD, AF Ray, and Fife......I stayed up late to watch the Yankers/Os game last night but hit the sack before the 12th inning heroics.  What a finish!  I think the Red Sox have now missed the playoffs three years in a row. Bang Head

Gotta run.  Furniture and "useless debris" must be moved back into the family room, provided the carpeting has dried sufficiently from yesterday's cleaning.

Later gang.

Jack

Laugh Breezy and chilly here.  Warming tomorrow and then front comes through Friday night [no rain they say].  Chilly Sat. for deer season.

Aloha and Happy 10/11/12!  Sunny and 50 which is warmer than it's been for a while. Nice if too brief TARDIS ride last night. BoC, I'm sorry for your loss - sounds like quite a shock. Praying for Tyler this am. Kev, I can smell those burning leaves. Smells like fall. Jack, your heating strategy sounds wise. I use a budget plan - pay the same amount each month so Kelly can crank up the heat whenever she wants and they sort it out once a year. Your granddaughter sounds very bright - I wish she would use your examples at school. Ben is smart in math but is very behind in reading and writing so I'm calling in help. DougDa and Pat, the only Oak Ridge Boys tune I can recall - and now can't get out of my head is 'Elvira' - thanks a lot!

Lunch time:

This week I went for Waterborne Paint Training by Dupont at the BMW North America Hdgs. Training Center in Woodcliff Lake, NJ. One word: Unbelievable. A real Class operation.

Just planning for York.

Kev: Nice truck. I put a bedliner in my GMC but after we paint my son's Ford, we are going to do the bed with a product that we use at work now by U-Poll, called Raptor. It is carried at autobody supply stores and it is durable and inexpensive. I would use that in conjunction with the bed mat if you use a pickup like I do.    Prayers for Jerry. A good friend had the same scenario earlier this year.

Fife: Happy belated Anniversary!

BOC, Prayers for your friend's wife and the family.

DJ, Prayers for Corey and your family.

Have a Great Day,

John

......Your granddaughter sounds very bright - I wish she would use your examples at school. Ben is smart in math but is very behind in reading and writing so I'm calling in help.

My granddaughter's reading and comprehension skills have improved dramatically in the past twlelve months.  She is a fuss budget to start.  She needs fewer distractions, ones she creates and those created by others.  She needs to slow down (critical).  She needs to focus and to concentrate.  And she needs to practice (here is a shock) by actually reading!

She was just like I was as a kid!!!

I  started out a year ago by having her read one sentence out loud at a time and then have her  tell me what she read, or I would ask her questions !!!!  Initially she tried to read too fast.  She would skip the pauses that punctuation should dictate.  She would read words that weren't there or misread words.

When we started out she would get annoyed because I kept interrupting her and made her slow down and read correctly, read what was there, and pause as the punctuation required.  Making her read one sentence at a time and then quizzing her on the content was also VERY annoying to her.  But the fact is her mind was out in front of what was coming out of her mouth and her brain was not retaining much.

Structure and atmosphere fixed all of that.  We also started her reading silently each night, at least 15-20 minutes before bedtime, alone in her room and in total quiet!  And the wife and I had her reading out loud to us, at her home or over here, with a lot of praise thrown in when she was doing it right.

No surprises.  Her reading improved.  She could see and feel she improved.  Her retention improved, and she enjoyed that.  And now we just feed her interesting stuff to read to us.

I think part of the improvement also has to do with one-on-one time, quality time, time where she has me or Grammy or her parents all to herself, has our whole and undivided attention.

Writing?  That is another story for my granddaughter with many of the same impediments and solutions. Good writing is nothing more than structure and practice as well.  I could not write that well until I was formally taught composition.  Then by using the flowing form and the  ideas (outlines) I could take a couple of ideas and turn them into a lot of BS!!!!  Laugh

Good afternoon all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 50s.  Paid bills last night and might have some money left over.  Watched Arrow on the CW.  It may be a spin off of Smallville, but I am not sure.  It is based on a DC comic.  Delivered the sectional shirts to the team last night and they liked the looks.  Work has been quiet, which is good.  I got the latest TCA Quarterly last night.  Lots of convention pictures are in it.  Next convention is in St. Louis, and that is close enough I may have to check it out.  BOC, sorry to hear of your loss,  DJ, it can be a scary process with what you are going thru with Tyler.  Thoughts and prayers going out to all who need them.  TBIL after the game, and I hope to be doing lots of barrel rolls.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Jack: Glad to hear your granddaughters reading and comprehension is improving. She'll learn to deal with the distractions eventually. I had a hard time with that myself. As if my hearing and speech problems weren't enough I was also ADHD. Still am for the most part. Reading was one of the things used to help with that. I could say more on the subject but I don't want to bore anybody. I do enough of that already.

Yeah, 10-11-12

Lunch is over and the trip to La Salle to JC Whitney's outlet warehouse store went off without a hitch. I took my coffee can full of change to the bank this morning when I dropped off Chief's package and to my delight there was $87.63 in it with no quarters. I save the quarters in my truck and use them at the car wash.. So anyhow that paid for the bed mat that was $66.17 with the tax. Smile It is a product by DeeZee and a nice thick 3/8" heavy mat. It should work fine. I had one like it in my 1986 S-10 and that is all I ever needed. I had a Rhino Liner in the Dakota and I paid $300.00 for it 11.5 years ago and today they said it would cost $450.00 so NOPE on that.

John I need to know more about that U-Poll product. Do you have a web site for them? I won't use this truck like I have trucks in the past but I would like to coat it if I can. I loved the Rhino Liner that was in the Dodge I never liked the bed liners because they need a mat to keep things from sliding all over and they rub through the paint under them.

As for thermostats we have a programmable one and I love it. Keeps the bill down by adjusting the heat when you need it. Cool at night (65) a little heat (68) when the wife is getting ready for work then down during the day (67) until the wife gets home and then back up (70) till bedtime. The best part is the wife dosen't know how to set it so she stays away for fear of me going off on her for messing with it. Angry  Laugh

I contract  my LP in June. This year it was at the lowest price to date at $1.499 and I also had 440 gallons left over I did not use last year so I only contracted 800 gallons this year and not the normal 1000 gallons.

Wow RIJjack,  $150 for a face cord sounds like a lot. My shed holds 6' high by 12' long by 8'deep. How much money do I have there???  Humm A full cord is 4x8x4 right? Confused The back half of the shed is wood I cut last year. The front is 3 years old and I have to burn it this year. I try to cut my wood to 24" long to use in the fireplace. So there is 4 rows deep in the shed.

Well I had better shut up and do something. Zip it!

 Later Wink

Good morning all,

Dinner out with friends last night was good.  I had the 1/2 roasted chicken dinner.  One lady was dissapointed with rack of ribs.  Said they were too tough and sent them back in exchange for pulled pork sandwhich.  Everyone else enjoyed what they had.

Spanky, more prayers for TylerAngel Glad that the doctors think they have a handle on it.

We got a trace of rain here for about an hour this morning.  I went walking later and did not get wet.  Unstable air may bring more precipitation this afternoon.  I heard a couple of thurderclaps early too.  Very unusual for here.

V8, I have not shedded my shorts yet but I did wear some heavier ones for walking today.  Haven't decided if I'm going to Cal Stewart or not this year but will probably be there on Sunday if I do.  I don't need to be there when the door opens to get a shot at hard to find items because I don't really need anything that I can't live without.

I learned on the internet today about the opening of a railroad museum in the town where I grew up (Portsmouth, Virginia).  The main exibit is an ex N&W class M 4-8-0 steam locomotive that was rescued from a junk yard in Roanoke and two RPO cars and a dinner.  I think they have a caboose too.  It sits near where the old Seaboard Railroad had their passenger terminal and offices in Portsmouth at the foot of High Street which is the main drag.  That area has been a long time in preserving some of it's railroad history.  Glad to hear it.  I worked right next door to this place when going to school working part time at the Norfolk and Portsmouth Ferry which is long gone now having been replaced by underwater tunnels.

Kev, I don't buy from Wal Mart for that reason.

later,

Ray

SPMan
I don't buy from Wal Mart for that reason.

It's not that simple here. Either I buy from Wal-Mart or go to the grocery store at the other end of town and spend a lot more for less.

Greetings from the Capitol of New Jersey!

Killed the interview yesterday.....impressive background, superior technical knowledge....slow on the computer skills test (Excel).  Nope, didn't get the job, but impressed a lot of the managers and supervisors I interviewed with.  I was told that someone will be looking for me in the near future......so we shall see.

60 ish today and sunny....was breezy now calm.

Woke to hear the Yankees won with Ibanez.....yet again.  That guy is money....

Fire Meeting tonight.....I hate these things....much ado about ablmost nada.....Bang Head

Jeff - hope you feel better soon.

Angel for Tyler and those in need.

OK back to the car wash.....

I am the monster in your head...And I thought you'd learn by now, It seems you haven't yet.

Jack --  I have several cords of wood, well seasoned, ready to burn.  I also have a very nice truck w/trailer, perhaps Kev and I could do a tandem load of hard woods to the east coast and bring back that east coast money to the Heartlands?  Kev, are you in?  More trains for wood :)

Jon

So many roads, so little time.

Jon,

I am in for sure,,,,,,,,,,,, but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I would love the road trip, but as you may know, hauling wood across state lines is a no no these days with the bugs that can kill a forest. As for us and the emerald ash borer, they  have killed all of my Ash trees. Today you have to burn it where you cut it. Sad

Bob,

That 302 is really coming together nicely.Smile

BOC,

          Angel

Jack,

         PM sent.

Kev,

I don't think any company cares about employees. I've seen it firsthand in retail and manufacturing.  Get hurt due to working conditions, and/or standup for yourself and you're out the door.Angry  One messed up shoulder from hanging from a ladder with 50# toolbag hanging from said shoulder and a sore foot are all that I have from my time in the glass industry.  I was close to 100' up on the ladder on the side of a silo, and would be dead had I not caught a grip.  Certainly don't miss anything about that other than the $18/hr + plentiful hours and OT.

Went through the 302 loco last night.  A thorough cleaning, lube, and new brushes/springs were all it needed to run and smoke great.  I found a good pilot in my junk box to replace the bent one. Just need the parts to reattach the tender truck.
