sir james I

It's 72 with bright sun. 80s today.

Granny's cleaning the front window, Again. The afternoon sun shines through it and she goes nuts if the window has a spot on it.

S.J.

SJ.......what is it about wives and windows?  The birds routinely nail mine on the outside and the dog and grandchildren take care of fouling the inside on a daily basis.  Bang Head  Maybe we should buy and apply those tear away plastic sheets the NASCAR drivers use on their windshields.

Nice out today but dry dry dry. Even deep in the woods everything is shriveling up from lack of water.

Sprint, Never got there Jack, I thought I would call first. Told her all of the issues and she said she needed to call someone to see what they could do. She never called back.  Super Angry So I sent an e-mail to their help address and got a reply and talked to a woman today who assured me everything is corrected. We will see. Tongue Tied

Fife, Sorry to hear about you boy not getting the CSX job, I wish I had $10.00 for every good job my son has had and just walked away from in the last 12 years. He will be 32 this month and when I was his age I had already booked 12 years in the same job for the same company. They just think about things different then we do. Same thing my day must of said about me as well. Whistling

SJ, Can you and Granny come over here? I think my wife gave up on cleaning windows. Dots - Sign

SP Ray, The fence thing your going through blows my mind. When we lived in town if you wanted a fence you had to get a permit, The fence had to be at least one foot inside your lot line and the good side of the fence had to face your neighbor. That put all of the responsibility on you for the fence. I take it you don’t have those kinds of rules. If you did you would not be involved in the process. Huh? That is great news on the NASA trip for your grandson!! Yes

BOC, Wish it were that cool here. Hope your feeling better.

All of you have a good day,

Fife,

Thanks for the info.  Sorry your son didn't get the job, but that just means something better is probably in the future.  I understand how he feels.  It's a tough thing for sure.

Ray,

I agree about getting receipts for the work.  I wouldn't trust your neighbor.

Busy day today.  Tint is due in, which means I need to go buy the rest of the supplies.  Washed the Mustang last night, and will give it a coat of Collinite 845.

I also have a Flyer 302 Atlantic (four piece cast) in need of a link coupler.  Seller apparently broke it during packing, but wouldn't admit it.Bang Head  It will likely be parted and listed.  Don't feel like putting any more into it.

With oldest, 'tis a matter of responsibility.  The phrase "if you wanna get out of a hole, stop digging" applies in his case.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Bone Dry Partly Cloudy and Warming Cape Ann Taxachusetts,

Watched a weather bit in the news last night about the growing drought conditions following the extended 2012 record temperatures......continued prayers for the farmers are in order. Angel  The negative financial impact on them is very sad, and the downstream implications affect each of us.  Praying for rain and cooler temperatures for them.Angel

Well, I am still driving the auto dealer's free courstesy car while mine has been held over for day two of the extended warranty repairs on my 6 year old GM SRX.  Everything covered by the warranty extension, or so I was told.  There was nothing major on my "issues" list, but if I had half a brain I would have taken the vehicle in here and there instead of procrastinating and winding up with the big bang, all-at-once approach.  On the bright side, this "one and your done" approach is saving me trips back and forth to the dealer.  Massive sun roof needs adjustment/clean tracks/lube so "express close" works more consistently.  Electric retracting sun shade for sun roof came off the tracks.  AM reception is very poor (versus any car I have owned) while XM and FM are excellent.  Two bulbs out.  A broken A/C vent control which was the handywork of my sister's right foot.  Only top half of the rear defroster in the glass works.  And the cap on the washer fluid tank doesn't fit tightly, snap down, so the washer fluid squirting pressure is poor.  Meanwhile, the only thing that has gone South on my wifes 9 year old Infinity is a failed power window motor actuator.

You guys are far more handy than I am.  Braver too.  I read how you fix this, adjust that, and replace stuff on your PCs and MACS.  If that were me, I would still wind up with a box of parts and no working PC.

BOC.......probably 99.9% of the rest of us need to lose more than a few lbs.  Prayers continue for better test results now that the last round is behind you. Angel  You sound like one busy guy throughout this ordeal.  Hang in there!

Fife.......was sorry to hear your oldest did not get the CSX job.  Maybe the second time around if he keeps his key contacts there intact and active with some follow-up down the road.....starting today by thanking the decision-maker(s) with a thank you letter for the opportunity to have been considered and expressing continued interest in CSX should something pop up.  Sometimes employment in one's chosen industry or company is not an event but a process.

Chief.....you are really hauling on your layout!!!!  Had you asked, I would have driven the 20 miles to Charles Ro, picked up your order, and delivered them the remaining 720 miles personally the very next day.  Then I would have loaded my vehicle up with your tomatoes and other veggies for the drive back.  Whistling

KEV......hope when you show up at the Sprint store after your extended drive that they can put you back in working order on the spot while you wait.  Being so far away from things while living in a more rural area does have it's drawbacks, but I think you enjoy the benefits and improved quality of life every single day 24/7/365. Thumbs Up

Jeff......Christmas in July!  Sounds like you hit the jackpot. Thumbs Up  F3s and F7s are among my favorites of all time.  Thank you for the picutres, I always enjoy them.  Re getting clothing items for one's birthday, I'd be running around half naked and in tatters and without underwear and sox if such were not the case with me.Surprise Thumbs Up  Batten down the hatches........yet again.  It is so hot and dry here that even the perennially horrendous mosquito population has been kept mostly in check and in hiding.   BTW.......what is the EER rating on your A/C unit?

8N.........  Thumbs Up on scoring that SD90.  It is always especially nice to pick up such a piece.  Re your Alco B unit dual-motor project......been following it with interest.  As you may or may not know, Bob Nelson converted a Postwar dummy A Alco loco into a dual motored unit and can pull tree stumps with his AA creation.  Not many on this forum have undertaken this with Alcos. Thumbs Up

SP Ray........I still think your heart was in the right place and your intentions honorable, laudable, re your trees and the neighbor's block wall project.  The cost issues are nearly all your neighbor's now, including soil retention (he lives downhill), water (he lives downhill), the viability of your dry well and drainage (he lives downhill), and privacy (his fence)..

If he leaves you "high and dry wet and doesn't retain the functionality of your dry well as promised, you can still move your water down near the proximity of the dry well by the new block wall in the manner you suggested.  Then calmly and politely Inform him that due to his wants, his project, his plan, his work, his contractors, and his failed responsibilities that the water (mitigated before the project) will undermine his new block wall.

Privacy?  You can get it back with his fence.  If that fence falls through, there are a lot of reasonably-priced ($25 each) pine species that grow very thick (7 feet wide)  and upward very fast (up to 6 feet a year) and can provide you with privacy much faster than you think.  I have some, chose them over a privacy fence......and no pruning required!

As for the unsollicited criticism and  "advice" I routinely receive from my family members and friends, I pay them no heed and tell them to keep their criticisms to themselves.  I have to live here.  I choose what I want to do with these types of issues (and when).  I have to live with the results and implications, not them.  Call your detractors back and suggest they pitch in on the cost of the pine tree screening idea so they can have privacy USING YOUR POOL!!!!!!!!!

Gotta run and book some appointments: dental and eye.  Later, gang.

Jack

Morning.  Been snoozing in recliner.  Rainy [thanks again Lord for the much needed rain].  Running errands today and then Mrs. Edna's for a few lockons.  I use a lot to insure good voltage all around and on sidings.  Wifey slept in.  She has flexable days and hours.  She will work Friday.  I have to go to the lake house Friday afternoon for night Board of Directors meeting.

Fifey, hope older Fife Pup gets a job soon.  He'll actually find one better.  Have faith.

Dennis, maybe a little praire beige on a corner or something.  Got some folks that want to help "decorate" this one.  Rolesville art class wants to do the backdrops.  Need to get a sign or letters to go over the doors reading, "The Train Box".

BTW: anyone need some SoundStop?  Lowes told me they would take remainder back whenthey ordered.  Now we will see.  Half the "bundle" left over.

Later.

Good Morning CTTFans!

It's 63F and Clear right now and heading to the low 90's.  This morning news is reporting two new fires breaking out in Western Colorado now but so far they sound small and under control.  The two major fires that destroyed so many homes are both now 100% controlled thanks to the heroic efforts by the Fire Fighters and Mother Nature tossing in some rain finally

Konbanwa,

It was a hot day today and a busy one at work as well.  However, I was able to start my day off with an easy three-mile run and a light leg workout at the gym.  We did not do anything exciting this evening; we simply relaxed at home.  The All Star game turned out to be a dud for us AL folks; the starting pitchers did not pitch well at all.  It’s time to do some schoolwork and then get some sleep.

SP Ray – That is great news about your grandson.  NASA is very selective with those types of things and it is a great accomplishment for him.  I’m sure he will enjoy it.  I’ll be praying for your backyard headache to be resolved.

Fife – I’m sorry your oldest son didn’t get the job.  I hope he finds something else soon.

Sayonara,

Joe

Good morning all,

IIABSDISEI with temps near 90.  Game tonight.  Should be interesting.  SPman, makes my "discussions" with neighbor on trees look quite mild.  I feel for you, dude.  Work has been busy the last two days and will be today.  Good progress, Chief.  Did nothing last night.  Was tired and back was hurting.  Took some Aleve.  Doing better today. I had bacon and biscuits on the dining car for breakfast before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL and I can drive after the game.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good morning. It's 72°F and cloudy. Humidity is 100%. The high will be 85°F. Showers and thunderstorms are likely.

I'm going to be working on the Dash 8-40B today. The wires for the front headlight need to lengthened, left rail pickup from the front truck is non-existent and the wheels are quite dirty. I also need to rework the front light so it's enclosed better and is more securely attached to the top of the cab. It's an LED so heat isn't an issue. Depending on how much free time I have I may be able to get it all done today.

Mornin' boys.  A hazy 72 here in the Mid-Atlantic region.  Just learned that oldest boy (lots o' issues) didn't get job with CSX. Sigh

dwiemer - According to middle Princess, that is the Black Pearl (Pirates of the Caribbean).  For her 13th birthday, we took her to a waterfront restaurant at the Inner Harbor, and it was docked across the way.  She (being a big Johnny Depp fan) thought I arranged that for her...Pirate

Good early morning.  Quick post on my way in to do a case.  Jack, yeah, I think that cop saved you a lot of trouble!  Arguing with the wife about driving will never work in your favor.  Fife, thought about you while reading an article about the tall ship festival in Rhoad Island coming up.  They had a photo of the reproduction of the HMS Bounty.

Chief, you really have gotten far in a short amount of time on your layout.  Even with some delays, much progress.  Keep up the great work.  As much grief as someone tried to cause, you really should keep one section with nothing but plywood to be the "Plywood Prairie", just for fun!

Ray, hope the fence issue gets resolved quickly.  Hate when you have a neighbor who can be contrary.  I would also ask for a copy of receipts for all expenses you had to cover.

Well, time to go to work.

God bless,

Dennis

Good evening all,

Progress or lack thereof on the new block wall fence.  The workmen spent the whole day trying to break up old concrete footing to make way for a new one in the same place.  They only finished a little more than a third of the length of it today.  Next section is higher and thicker because it also doubled as a retaining wall when built.  This job has turned into something like dismantling a freeway overpass.  Neighbor informs me today of a lot of new unexpected expenses like hauling away old concrete and hireing a machine to better break up old concrete.  I told him I was only on board for half the fence as originally estimated and half of whatever tree work is necessary.  That's all!  He seems to think that I will pay half of everything no matter what.  Not!  It ain't going to happen and I told him so.   Both my drain lines to dry wells underground have been compromised by his digging but he claims he will fix it.  This whole thing is a nightmare.  Meantime, my backyard is wide open to view from the rear with no privacy in the pool.  Could not have happened at a worse time with the 100 plus heat we're having but I'm swimming anyway.

On a brighter note, my number two son returned from a trip to Oregon tonight and I'm glad he is home with all the headaches around here.

Number one son and his family are off to Florida the end of the month for my grandson to attend a siminar put on by NASA.  He got an invitation to go and his family is going with him..  He is involved in a program here on the West Coast by Cal Tech and NASA.  He is one of just a few high school students selected for this trip.  Incidentally, they are paying their own way.  No freeloaders here.

Chief, sounds like you are making great progress.  I believe those hinges are the same kind that Don used on my layout.  They work great!

Went for blood test this morning and out to breakfast with wife after a walk.  Paid around $14 including tip for one small waffle and one egg each with just water to drink.  Such a deal!

I"m all tuckered out now and need some rest.  See ya tomorrow.

Ray

Cooled off a little here over the weekend.  Highs are now just in the low 90's.  Still need rain.  Pop up type showers all arouund us, but none over us.

My Lionmaster SD90 in CP livery got here.  Put it on the track for a quick test run.  Everything seems to work.  It is a nice piece.  Got the frame for my two motor B unit painted.  Hopefully, I'll get it assembled and wired sometime this week.

Not much else going on.

All for now.

Time for me to call it a night. It rained off and on all day today and is still raining now. Rain for two or three hours, no rain for two or three hours, rain for two or three hours, etc. Worked on the Dash 8-40B today. The headlight likes to drop down into the cab and light up the windows. I'll take it apart when I have the chance and see what can be done. I already had it open today checking over the wires. I found that the screw holes for the screws that hold the coupler pockets were stripped out. I substituted somewhat larger brass screws so now they're tight. Also looked over the Athearn F7A. Blue box undecorated body, hex drive, very quiet. It looks brand new. There was a blue box Santa Fe Warbonnet F7A body available so I put that on the chassis of my lead Frankenstein F unit. Nice splash of color. See y'all tomorrow.

ITS DONE.  LARGE SECTIONS OF TRACK SOLDERED AND ALL OF IT SCREWED DOWN AND TESTED.  Cool  Yes, voltage [used my old 1033 that came with my first Lionel in 1953] put on it and it tests fine with volt meter.  Could run a conventional on the sections but stop for the big holes waiting for bridges.  Waiting for hinges to come from CA.  Ordered Sunday on line.  Not a word since order confirmed.  Also, waiting on two Wye switches from Charles Ro.  Suppose to have shipped yesterday.  No tracking email on that either.Bang Head

Now the best news: ITS RAINING!  and twice, hard as it could.  Then some regular showers. StormStormYes  Thank you Lord. Angel

I got a package in the mail today. Fairly heavy too. It turned out to be the items I traded the Y6B for. A Walthers Trainline Dash 8-40B, Two Athearn F7A's (one dummy), an Athearn F7A body (undec), two Bachmann FT bodies (A & B), two F7/F9 dress up kits and two Digitrax DH-123 decoders. I'm fairly certain some of those were birthday gifts.

I'm down to just three working steamers now. A Pemco 2-6-0, 70's era Bachmann 0-6-0, Fleischmann 0-4-0. The Bachmann and the Fleischmann are staying.

Pat, Kev, et al, thanks for your input on the subject of tree removal.  Upon subsequent investigation I found that the base of the trees were impacting the place where the new footing for the fence has to go.  I made the decision be it good or bad, it's mine to live with.  However, I do agree that the aforementioned neighbor is probably taking advantage of my good nature.  The guy is a conniver I think.  They are working today trying to remove some of the old concrete footing for a chain link fence.  They are not making much progress.  They have only gone about a 4th of the way in over 2 l/2 hours of drilling with a pnuematic drill.  For some reason the old chain link fence was placed on a concrete footing running the width of the yard instead of just putting a little cement around each individual post.  Seems to me that it would be easier to just put a new footing parallel to the old one but the neighbor does not want to give up an inch on his side.  I'll let you know how it all turns out eventually.

Thanks, Ray

Konnichiwa,
.......Jack – I hate to say this, but I’m kind of glad the trooper actually pulled you guys over for this.  While your wife’s explanation was logical, I cannot stand seeing so many cars cruising along in the passing lane.  It drives me nuts when I end up passing them while I’m in the right lane which of course is illegal in some places (it’s called “overtaking on the right”).  In the end it was nice of him not to ticket you and I’m glad you only received a warning.  I just wish more troopers were as vigilant on this one.  Also, did she notice all the boxes were gone? Surprise
Sayonara,
Joe

JoeyD.........I agree with what you said.  Fife observed it is basically a control thing.  Too many folks drive like they own the highway, it is all their space, and everyone else should work around THEM, whether that be their speed, their failure to yeild when merging, abrupt lane changes with too little space,  left lane blockage, or their weaving while speeding up and slowing down while on their cell phones.

My wife books it when she is in the left travel lane, always keeps up with the left lane traffic flow.  But she moves over right if the pace in front of her gets excessive.  In this case there initially wasn't a car in front or behind us within a quarter of a mile, so we think we may have passed the State trooper (in hiding?) who pulled out and followed us.  Up to that point she was blocking no one.

Yes, the wife was driving just shy of 60 in a 55.  She had moved to the left lane to avoid cars potentially entering the highway at the three upcoming interchanges which are less than a mile apart from each other.  These are listed in the top ten most dangerous interchanges in the State of Taxachusetts.

For these 3, there is no entering run-up-your-speed lane.  So cars entering the highway are either off the highway or are jumping right into the right travel lane where everyone is going 55+.  Your car had better be quick 0-60 (entering).  Or you better have a good attention span and good brakes while on this stretch of highway approaching these interchanges.

Consequently, both of us almost always avoid the right travel lane in this stretch whenever we can......it's safer.  I can't tell you how many knuckleheads just pull right out into the right travel lane in front of you and severely cut you off.

The State trooper who pulled the wifey over never mentioned her speed, just that she should keep right except to pass so that emergency vehicles could get by if need be.  I think he meant him. Smile, Wink & Grin.

I'll tell Pam you are glad the trooper pulled her over.  That should liven up my life this evening. WhistlingLaugh  You should be relatively safe until you return to the States.

Jack.

BTW.........the officer spent very few seconds looking at her drivers' license, so I think this was all a matter of blonde hair blue eye syndrome as KEV suggested.  Wink

Good morning all,

Going to waste today trying to get things fixed with Sprint and this bad new phone or I will no longer be with their phones. Seems the only way I can do this is to go to a corp. store and the closest one is 47 miles away. Angry Super Angry

Well wish me luck or better yet pray for me. Tongue Tied

 Have a good day!

It is a sunny 70.

The site shut down and I lost my post. So readers digest version.

Chief if you already had most of what you needed then of course that would be the way to go. Too bad though your having to do a lot of extra work. A nice chat with Brutus last night...S.J.
