Joe & Kev, A few years back CTT did a "How To" feature on an Under The Bed layout. Unfortunately I no longer have it, gave it to a family with a train crazed 6 y.o. Maybe someone else on the Pot can recall which issue it was, possibly scan and e-mail to you or order it from Back Issue dept.

DougDG is this it???

No museum tomorrow, still worn out from last weekend .

Jack, When it comes to dry skin I think I am the worst and it has only gotten worse with all the meds. Now if a cuticle or knuckle gets dry and cracks I bleed like a stuck pig. It has gotten to the point that at nite I sometimes will grease the hands with Eucherin(sp?) cream, almost like axle grease, and have to sleep with plastic bags over them to keep from making a mess of the linens. Bag Balm is good also.

Time to raid the fridge for some lunch.

Later all !

Good morning. It's 53° and cloudy. The high will be 68° and it will be patyly cloudy. Looks like rain tonight.

Not feeling good today so I'll be taking a break from the layout. There's been some kind of bug going around and I think I caught it. I need a break anyway. I've been working on locos so much lately I'm seeing them in my sleep. Even so, watching the trio of F3's pulling fifty NMRA weighted cars like they weren't even there yesterday was a pleasant sight. Gonna be watching some movies for a change. See y'all later.

Kev – As you can tell from my thread, the Under-the-bed Railroad was very simple to build.  Considering what you have already done with your layout, an under-the-bed layout should be a snap for you.  How much space will you have?  Since our space was so small, O27 tubular track would have probably been better, but we have plenty of FasTrack and my son’s favorite locomotive runs best on O36.  Shoot me a PM if you have any questions and perhaps we could chat sometime.

Thanks Joe,  It looks very nice for a UTB layout.

I will be working with a Pennsylvania Lionel set # 6-30018 that I got for Jr. last year for Christmas. I have to get the size he has under his bed. If I recall it will work if we remove two 10 " sections of track. I would like to see some closer pictures of the construction. The big thing is I want to get his dad involved in the build if no more than footing the bill.   Wink I will shoot you a PM with my E-mail address. There is no hurry because they will be moving in March so I may wait till after the move.

Tks,

 Kev.

Good Morning

30 degrees with just enough white stuff to cover the walks. Cold tonight though, down to 9. Yes I left the chat early last night, was feeling cold all day and a warm bed was calling me. Hey some days are like that. Joe the layout looks good, at least you have a place to play..S.J.

Konbanwa,

I had a nice and easy two-mile run this morning followed by oatmeal for breakfast.  Nothing too exciting happened at work today and we spent some time at the firing range in the afternoon.  I received my final Christmas present today and the photos are below.  These were on back order.  The wife bought them at a good price but now they are on sale at an ever better price; I am tempted to buy more but I will save the funds for a prewar locomotive.  The weekend is almost here and I should complete some simple wiring and power for the layout.  I received the January and February issues of CTT today.  My originals must have been lost and when I notified Customer Service last week they promptly dropped two new issues in the mail.  The best part is the 8 y/o son has already confiscated one and is trying to get the other.  It’s time to do some schoolwork.

Chuck, SJ, et al – Thanks for the kind words about the passenger cars.  I was originally considered an electric prewar locomotive, but I have only seen a few red ones out there.  I am now leaning towards a prewar steam locomotive to pull these cars; there are more of those on the market.

Rich – That’s great news about the job interviews. I hope they go well.

Vega – Is your advisor facilitating investments purchases for you or actively trading for you?  There is a difference and the fees should be aligned as such.  Also, you should be looking at his track record over a long period of time.  Some advisors might do well for a year or two but how do they do over 10 and 20-year spans?

Jack – I’m glad Frank is doing so well.

Jeffrey – Thanks for your service at the FD.

Sayonara,

Joe

Good morning,

18 degrees now and down to 0 tonight. The wind is picking up. We had a light snow over night and they are calling for 3" to 7" tomorrow afternoon. Looks like DougM is going to get the worst of that.  Laugh

I have to restock the woodpile on the porch before it gets much colder.  Indifferent

Jim, Thanks for the up date on RT. I was in the basement last night till 11:45 running trains. Had the old 681 S-2 Turbine pulling a long line of post-war cars and the new Beep pulling a lumber load. Did not know how late it was till I came back up.

Jack nice piece on the General Lee, are you sure they did not   shoot that show in Roseyville instead of Georgia?

Chief kind of looks like he could be related to Rosco and Boss J.D. Hogg.   Smile, Wink & Grin

The cat just came back in and wants a fire, so I better go get some wood.  Wink

Later guys.

.........Kind of watching the car auction from Scottsdale, what a difference between last nite and tonite. Last nite it seemed like maybe the economy was impacting results but based on tonite, No Way. Seems as though trucks are "In" this year. Can't wait til Saturday maybe Sunday, they will be auctioning off the original General Lee, the #1. The second General Lee sold a few years back for $450K, gotta see what the original goes for. ??????........

Doug........from Wikipedia:   http://www.ask.com/wiki/The_General_Lee

"Although the estimated number of General Lees used varies from different sources, according to Ben Jones ("Cooter" in the show), as well as builders involved with the show, 256 General Lees were used to film the series. Others claim about 321 were used in the series. Approximately seventeen still exist in various states of repair. On average, more than one General Lee was used up per show. When filming a jump, anywhere from 500 to 1,000 pounds of sand bags or concrete ballast was placed in the trunk to prevent the car from nosing over. Later in the series the mechanics would raise the front end of the car to keep it from scraping against the ramp causing it to lose speed, thereby providing a cushion for the driver upon landing. Stunt drivers report enjoying the flights but hating the landings. Despite the ballast, the landing attitude of the car was somewhat unpredictable, resulting in moderate to extremely violent forces, depending on how it landed. On many of the jumps the cars bent upon impact. All cars used in large jumps were immediately retired due to structural damage."

and..........

Salvaged LEE 1

LEE 1[1] was salvaged out of a Georgia junkyard in August 2001 by Travis Bell[2] and Gary Schneider.[3] The car has since been fully "restored" to its on screen appearance. It was officially unveiled to the public November 11, 2006 with John Schneider behind the wheel.

Jack, I forgive you.  I know you are aware that I'm in Californinia too.  Although I am proud of my Southern heritage, I have I have lived in the not so golden state for 53 years now.

Jeffrey, glad the prostate exam is behind you (no pun intended).

V8 Dennis, we have a financial advisor too.  I'm no good with that either on my own.  By and large, our guy has kept us afloat through a lot of ups and downs.

Went out to eat tonight at the local Sizzler and had a better steak than I got last time at a more expensive place.  Go figure!  The latter place took a great piece of meat (filet mignon) and distroyed it with some kind of wine sauce over the top.  Should have sent it back but I was too hungry to wait. Got my new copy of CTT today but haven't had a chance to read it yet.  Lots of layout pictures.

Good night all,

Ray

Rich - Big congrats, hope things really turn around for you now!  Bob, I hope things go well for you too - I know you have been thinking about this a while.

Can't remember if I said it before, so Happy Birthday Jack and also Happy Birthday Roseyville!

Chief, we had a ghost in the house I mostly grew up in.  Young man that lived there before had shot himself and in fact there was a bullet hole in the molding and a shelf in my bedroom.  My folks had told us it was just a gun accident and nobody was hurt when we were kids and first moved into the house, about 1970, but many years later they fessed up.  One of my sisters and I both saw the ghost, not sure about the other kids - one time we were all comparing stories!  I don't know if I really believe it, but we didn't know the guy killed himself in the house etc and it's weird we had such similar experiences.  Maybe it's just like a photo "impression" on the house?  My sister really took it seriously though, and she actually went and got a special blessing from a priest in her church years ago to make sure she was rid of it.

Char must be feeling better, she is going over dental bills and she is mad as a hornet - glad I'm not that dentist's secretary!  Laugh

Joe - very nice train cars!

Jeff - glad you had no problems with the exam.  Doug - hope your test goes well!

TARDIS is ready, so let's get going!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Evenin All.

Jack, Here that was a bidet, I could have sworn he was talking about an emergency eye wash station. Clown

Crazy 3day weekend, three days at the museum which appears to have been an expensive playtime. An Atlas loco I sent in last week for work arrived there today, just in time for me to ship out another Atlas loco today that bit the dust Sunday. Not to mention that a MTH PS-2 steamer may have lost it's soundboard last Friday. Bang Head At least on Monday I didn't have anything running, except me trying to keep up with the kids and their operating issues. Did get to slow down for a bit when I had to repair a broken rail, did need to keep an eye out for passing flying trains though. Smile, Wink & Grin

Congas to Roseyville !  Thumbs Up

Jeff, No jokes from here. Had mine last month and will be going in for a scope in March. Sigh

Went to the fire station tonight to turn in my walking papers. While I was there they had a scenario playing out for the newer folks. While the answers being given to the questions were good the reasoning behind the questions and answers wasn't being explained. There were several points that I had to help clarify because I couldn't let them go on without seeing the safety aspect of what was being presented. Afterward I turned in my turnout gear, badge and radio. I will however continue helping out in a teaching capacity but I won't be working fire scenes or working on the trucks. They let me keep my badge and my rank of captain and position of Safety Officer but my job now is just to help teach. Being a volunteer I don't get any pay for it but knowing that what I teach the fire fighters will help keep them safe is payment enough.

Got the prostate exam done this morning. What a pain in the butt! Nuff said about that.

Tore apart an Athearn F7B Hi-F dummy loco and put in a Proto 2000 FA1 frame with EMD F7 trucks. So now I have a powered F7B with an Alco FA1 fuel tank and trucks that are set a bit closer together than is normal for an F7. It's a little bit of an attention getter.

Time for me to call it a night. See y'all tomorrow.

Good evening everyone.  Tried to post earlier, but the cyber monster ate it.  We had violin lessons tonight.  The kids are really doing well.  They have been playing mostly classical and American folk music, but tonight they started on Irish folk music.  Was a fun time.

Rich, I too was wondering about you at Halmark, I can only imagine the cards you'll come up with.  Anyway, congrats on the job.  Also, it is refreshing to know someone who battled the job hunt and didn't sit back and give up hope.  My brother in law was like you.  He was out of work, but continued doing odd jobs and filling in while looking for a permanent place.  Good luck with it.

Well, I must get to sleep, have a full day tomorrow and need to fire on all cyllinders.

God bless,

Dennis

Just a quick splash and go.........

The only thing I don't like about real Christmas trees are the millions of pine needles left behind in the aftermath, so many I actually got some in my pants yesterday. Surprise

Chief........a sincere Happy B-Day to Rolesville.  When I first joined the POT I posted some Rolesville history I invented, referring to it as a former penal colony!  You were not amused as I recall and actually wrote a piece on Rolesville.  There were no ghosts in that account.  Laugh

I got to wondering how JimSP's house addition is coming along.  Traindood has disappeared again.  And a question for the ages: "Will a train ever run on Brent's new layout?"

Rich.......the news gets better by the day!!!! Thumbs Up  Thought of you last night while watching the Velocity Chanel on cable and a hour segment with Chip Foose on the 1960s to early 1970s MOPARs, from street to Nascar.

Jeff.......great news on the Doc visits. Thumbs Up  Like my dog when we take him to the vet's office, I'll bet you ran out of there with speed you hadn't mustered since the last go around with this stuff! Smile, Wink & Grin

RaySP......I didn't mean to exclude you with the California Boys stuff.  With all of your recent posts with back east info, I forgot you too have been California Dreamin'. Stick out tongue

Dennis, Roy,  and all.........thanks for the input on "lack of humidity" problem I have been having in my house.  Chief, thanks for the info on mold, but low humidity does not cause mold up here in the North and elsewhere in the U.S.  Must be a weird Southern malady. Whistling  I will have to make a trip to Home Depot or Sears later in the week and add two more humidifiers to my arsenel.

Chuck.......was thinking of you and your recent track cleaning project when I went to do some laundry earlier today. The last thing my wife said to me re my own track cleaning was to not wash the old, blackened and greasy (formerly) white cotton t-shirts I use to clean the track in with the rest of the whites.  I wonder why she said that. Whistling Smile, Wink & Grin

JoeyD.........really like your passenger car find.  You and SJ are on the same wavelength.  It won't be long until you find an engine to go with them AND have the layout to run them on!!!!

8N........are you all better yet?

V8........toy trains are a great investment!  WhistlingSmile, Wink & Grin

DougM........the Bulls have me quickly thinking NBA playoffs and possibly a title for Chicago this season. Thumbs Up

Fife.......I just checked our calendar for Sunday and see that my wife has us signed up for some practice obedience trials up in Maine with Maximus.  It is a shame I will have the chills, a migraine, a sore back, and a toothache in that time slot and will have to remain  at home recovering on the sofa, watching the Ravens/Patriots game. Whistling

Darren............bet they don't have much snow removal equipment around Seattle, but they do 40 miles West of there in the mountains.  Watching the demolition derby today in Seattle was interesting.

KEV and DougM........according to my FIL, was down to 8 last night in Elgin just North and East of Kev and straight South of Doug.  Please send those temps to Rolesville.  It will keep the Chief's ghosts dressed up in long johns so he can see them coming and going.

Later, gang.

Jack

Hallmark!!??

When you care enough to send to the very best? Yeah, I know. Showing my age.

Today I find myself looking at three dummy locos. An F3B and two F7B's. The F3B is a Varney, one of the F7B's is an Athearn Hi-F and the other F7B is an Athearn blue box body on an old Bachmann F7 frame with a pancake motor. The gears were removed to make it free wheeling. My intention is to repower all of them. I already have one power chassis from a Proto 2000 FA1 with Athearn F7 trucks. It's an unusual looking beast but it works, or will work once I get a decoder for it.

Got the prostate exam and PSA test out of the way. It would have helped if they were both in the same town. PSA test was in Leesville, the exam was two towns over in DeRidder. Also stopped by the bank and the registrar of voters office.

Doug Murphy, the railroad line I referred to was the former Norfolk District of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad which ran between Rocky Mount, North Carolina and Portsmouth, Virginia.  Some of the line has been removed but a few places still remain and have been taken over by other companies.  One of them is the North Carolina-Virginia RR, a short line which serves a steel mill near Tunis on the Chowan River.

I rode this line a lot with my grandmother when I was a kid between Portsmouth and Rocky Mount.  I wrote an article about it for Lines South, the publication for the ACL/SAL historical society.  The title was "The Road to Rocky Mount"

Chief, interesting story about the former grave on your property.  I used to see a tombstone in somebody's front yard overlooking the Elizabeth River in my home town.  I wondered what would happen to it when all the living relatives passed on.

later,

Ray
