I survived another "Winter" night here in Southern California. Been going below 40 degrees for the last couple of nights. Don't think the Mamas and Papas were thinking about this kind of weather when they sang "California Dreaming".
Ran into a guy on a real train forum who had some photos and information about a now gone railroad line I used to ride on as a kid between North Carolina and Virginia. It was like finding a needle in a haystack. We agreed to exchange information and stuff.
Computer went bonkers yesterday but thankfully my son got it going again. The issue was about the internet connection. Still don't know why it disconnected.
Jack, there are at least 4 of us California boys now. Dougda, Dbaker,V8 Vega and me. BTW, happy birthday if I forgot
Dennis, hope everything continues to go well with the adoptions and prayers for your friend's father.
Chief, don't worry about the Bidet or whatever it is. You can always use it for an ice chest. I once used a watering can from a gas station for a beer cooler. We ran over it and had to pay for it so we figured we might as well get some use out of it. I think the outhouse is the answer if it's legal now.

I'm having difficulty raising the in-house humidity up to a comfortable level. I'm going through 4 gallons of water a day per unit with 2 units going 24/7 on the first floor. Same with the second floor. That's 8 gallons of water per day!
When the temps drop to 20 degrees or below, I can't even get the humidity up to 20%!!!! Since my heating plant is hot water baseboard, I can't utilize one of those "on the furnace" units you see on forced air units. My skin has dried out so bad my legs are beginning to look like snakeskin, and it is like having one huge mosquito bite! And I hate using moisturizers, leave me and my clothing feeling greasy.
I need help! I think I am going to go out and buy a couple more humidifiers and give that a whirl unless someone here has another idea.
I have been somewhat successful this Winter keeping my wife comfortable with the thermostat set in the daytime at 70 degrees when she is home, 67 overnight, and 67 when she is not home. I thought if I could jack the humidity she might feel more comfortable at lower thermostat settings. I am getting hammered by heating costs, and the price of fuel oil ain't going down in our lifetime.

RockIsland52 Jeff.........that decal "modification" you did to the CSX GP9 changing the call letters to L & A was an unwise thing to do. The Chief has very sensitive feelings about stuff like that, calls it desecration, then plans out some retaliation directed at the offender. If you don't watch out, he'll start sending you grits with instructions on how to properly prepare them.

Good morning. It's 70° and wet. Rain and thunderstorms today. The high will be 74° and you guessed it, more thunderstorms. The chance for thunderstorms is 40%. Looks like 36° for tonight.Nothing planned for today. I had a excellent breakfast at my parents place this morning. I'm still there waiting for the weather to clear some as my vans wiper motor isn't the greatest and stops for no reason that I can find. Push or pull on the wipers and it starts working again.

dbaker48 Good Morning, RockIsland52: Don.......just think of yourself as the good looking "bookend." The one on the other end was scary. Hope that bidet you bought for the Chief doesn't cost too much to ship and he has a nice place for it in "the Box.". Jack - I think you must be the only one that knew what I was talking about regarding the "bidet". It could be multi-tasked as a "Bubbler" also, after installation. .........Take care and God Bless

Don........you had better include a user manual (with pictures) with the bidet. Being a Southerner, the Chief will probably think it is supposed to be filled with ice and used as a beverage cooler as part of a wet bar, or he will be using it to wash his muddy boots in it.
Good Afternoon Easterners Good Morning yous Giz out on the left coast....
I have accepted a part time gig with Hallmark...Nights/weekends irregular weeks...it's ok for now.
Found another good prospect, I'll have to run to the college and submit it..part time, but, hey...it's something else....
Rain here, up north they got a surprise ice/sleet freezing rain storm..and much gnashing and grinding of teeth for those in the early AM commute (refer that to those in NYC....)...going up to the 40's today.
for those in need
I'm off to get the mail and do some Fire Dept. stuff...my new Engineers room is done and I have been "requested" to fill it....and quickly...so the other rooms can be completed...please note we STILL do not have working bathrooms (thank you, Irene ). Quick run through the shower a brushing of teeth and oooffff we goooooo
PS - Sir J - LOVED those Marx cars....very cool!

Given the severity of the "winter" here, decided I needed to fix the sprinkler system. Hasn't been working well in awhile. But I have enjoyed watering by hand anyway. But running out of time so need them working. Minor job status; Day 1, One leak fixed, another sprinkler value broken. Replacing the value ended up snapping the copper pipe feed line, connected to the water main going into the house. Tried to sweat a new fitting on stub left, two hours later, still no go. Decided to pull copper out, (only 3 foot U shaped connection. Replace with 3/4" PVC and a gate valve coming off main. (Old system - Galvanized to house, T goes to a nipple another T and hose bib, sprinkler feed. Sprinkler feed goes from Galv, then copper U configuration and to Anti-Ciphon Valvue, then PVC feeds sprinklers. So just replace copper with a Gate valve from galvanized, then PVC from valve to sprinkler valve. Will be a lot easier, cheaper, and end up with seperate shut off for sprinklers from house. DAY 2 - TBD.

Had a conversation with George W., (not the former Pres), last night. Was a welcome call, apparently he is on his way to NY to take down the Grand Central Christmas layout. He sure is one knowledgeable guy!
Take care and God Bless

Good Morning CTT Fans!
It's 9F in the Mile High City this morning with a fresh dusting of snow on the ground. They say we will be heading for the 60's in the next few days; what season is this?

Hey Jack,
I guess we were posting at the same time. Look above.
Joe
Good Mornin' Y'all From A Wintery White Cape Ann Taxachusetts,
Forum slowed so badly last night I couldn't edit, went to bed. Working fine today.
Wifey called me from White Plains NY last night before she retired to thank me for remembering to put the snow brush in the car since they got a few inches of the white stuff last night down there. But she also had to point out that the snow brush was missing that guy attached to the one end who actually cleans off the vehicle; nor could she find the instruction manual for the snow brush. She also looked in the back and couldn't find the guy who warms up the car for her in the mornings. I am worried about her......she will actually have to refuel the car all by herself before she returns Thursday, something she does only once or twice a year.
The snow cannon is indeed working, but Chuck has the coordinates all messed up. It began snowing last night about 8PM, continued overnight, and let up about 4 this AM......only about 3-4 inches, heavy and wet. Most of it should just melt off today as the temps currently sit at 38, going up to the low to mid 40s today, with rain in the afternoon. Here it is January 17 and I have yet to fire up the snow blower in earnest this Winter except for another 5 minute test just after Thanksgiving.........that has never happened in all the 24 years I have lived here.....or elsewhere for that matter.
Brutus.......hope CHAR's tests come out good.
Dennis........what would folks do without friends like you? Prayers continue for your buddy's Dad. There's movement on the Far East front!!!! It won't be long now unless the Chinese government declares you persona non gratis and deny you permission to enter the country!!! Not to worry, though. One call from your wife will put the fear of God in them.
V8.........congratulations on 500 posts. Didn't you have a broken tooth too? Good luck with that. Sounds like we are having a broken tooth epidemic.
8N.........congratulations on 1,000 posts! My post count was initially inhibited late 2007 when I first joined and into 2008 because the Chief kept interrogating me about my background. That was worse than the Chinese government red tape that Dennis is going through.
JON.......you really are filling the calendar with travel plans. Alaska was one of my folks' favorites. They were able to travel quite a bit. My Dad always told the kids that the natural beauty and wonder that is America is at least the equal to anything the rest of the world has to offer. On the Alaska trip they took a cruise ship out of the Northwest, Seattle I think. For the return to Chicago at the back end of the vacation, my Dad cancelled their airline reservations and booked the Empire Builder.
AF Ray..........the football fans up my way are spoiled rotten. The season-ending humbling experiences since 2007 haven't sat well. Fife's Ravens and your Giants, two of the final 4 this year, squashed a lot of dreams for another championship since then. In my mind, the Patriots are the least balanced team still in the running. As SF and the Giants have shown, it takes more than a QB who has thrown for more than 4,600 yards, Rogers and Brees to name two. The Pats defense doesn't rank #31 for nothing, and defense wins championships in my book. The Pats victory over the T-boned Broncos was more a matter of putting an inexperienced QB Tebow in a hole early, playing D accordingly, and making few mistakes.
Brent.........re your layout, I believe your initial target completion date was Christmas, 2009. No?
KEV........bet your home is better insulated than most, best of both worlds, insulation and wood. Mine was built strictly to code in 1986 with high R factors, thermopane Andersons, and even the required R factor in the floor between the basement and the first floor. The snow on the roof doesn't even melt from the heat loss from the house. I burned up about 3.9 gallons of fuel oil per day for the 45 days ending January 14 during arguably one of the mildest Winters we have had temperature-wise since 1988. That's about $16 a day to heat the house and the hot water. Granted, I could dump a ton of dough in a newer heating plant that would jack the efficiency from the current 84% up to 90+. But the payback break-even point would take me about two decades. So my next move just might be a bit more modest, an electric tankless hot water system.
DougM........I hear you about the high cost of shooting. Can you go with your son as a guest of one of your church members or one of their family members?
LAZ.........I received a letter from the NSBOD (National Brotherhood/Sisterhoof of Deer) who have nominated you for their annual 2011-2012 Deer Preservation Award. Previous recipients include Elmer Fudd and Stevie Wonder.
SJ........we are looking forward to seeing pictures of your new Marx CP passenger cars in action.
My hat is off to the California boys DougDG, V8, and DonB for toughing out the 2011-2012 Winter and showing us the true pioneer spirit by keeping up with lawn mowing and pool cleaning.
JoeyD........hope all is moving forward with your son's under the bed layout.
Later gang. Wifey asked me to take down the outside Christmas lights so that I wouldn't grind up the lower lying ones with the snowblower again this year. Her honey-do list also includes removing the AA batteries from the 8 singing and dancing stuffed animals she pulls out every Christmas. Then I have to bag them and put them away in the designated indoor Christmas decoration closet that has no more room left. May have to amputate a few limbs to get them all in there. Or hang them from the closet ceiling.
Konbanwa,
I started off today with a four mile run; for the first three I pushed the youngest in the jogging stroller. He became unhappy towards the end so I had to bring him home and finish the last mile solo. It was about 37 degrees but he was bundled up nicely; I think he woke up too early. After the run my day became hectic. Our HQ surprised us today with a no-notice inspection. Fortunately our office is great at following policies so the inspection went well. The wife made some tasty chicken taco soup for dinner and we relaxed the rest of the evening. The under-the-bed layout has really developed as my 8 y/o son has added a few more Lego structures. I am going to buy a few Lego street plates for our roads which will make it even more fun. I can't wait to see how those pre-war passenger cars I'm waiting for are going to look on this layout.
Jack - I made a very delicious grilled chicken on Sunday, but she made a better pot roast last night. She is a mom - she can't stay sick long; otherwise, the house would fall apart.
Sayonara,
Aloha . 39 in the city and drizzly. Supposed to get up to 5 inches of snow around rush hour home. 8n and Dennisv8, congrats on your posting milestones! Jack, belated ! Can't wait to hear what you get at ye olde train shoppe. Isn't that how they are called in New England? Mike C and Brutus, I agree about Ticket to Ride, It's fun! I've only played the board game - its one of those euro-style games. Fife, I think I have an issue of a railfan mag that outlines the commuter lines around Philly. I'd be happy to send it to you if you think it would help your planning for your friend. Meetings today but still quiet. Hope to run trains tonight!

43 with fog and rain, lots of it. I'm glad it's not s--w. it's a family forum so I can't say that 4 letter word. No big plans for the day but did have a nice chat with some of the guys last night. And no breakfast yet because I had a donut with my coffee. Yep this site was slow last night so I gave up and waited till this morning..S.J.

36 and Damp Damp and Damper sums it up for North Central Illinois. The bottom will drop out the rest of the day. Most of the last snow is gone. Got to go the daughters to take care of a sick granddaughter so the daughter can go to work. This should be interesting. Going to leave a little early so I can do some grazing at Leisure Hours Hobby Shop first. Time for some Cheerios then I better go. You guys have a great day!!

Good Morning from Blueberryhill RR....
It is a rainy 48 degrees. Going up to 55 today with more rain.
Today is a busy day. I have to run a few errands and the usual chores around the house. Not much else new here.
Dining car is here and Cheerios is for breakfast.
Y'all have a great Tuesday.
Chuck
Hi GUYZ,
38 here and a bit of rainy day today. Still not much SNO HI O, CHUCK must be doing some work on the SNO CANON?
DENNIS it is a joy to see them deer so close to home. Me and MINNIE look forward to seeing our deer on our walks through out the day.
FIFE nice score.
Stay frosty,

Good morning guys. Getting ready to head in soon. I am not the early guy, so I will drop the kids off at school, then hit the OR. Fife, I think my post last night about building the Philly layout should have been directed to you, I thought Jack had posted it. Sorry.
Regarding my friend's dad, he has a glioblastoma, same thing Ted Kennedy had. Prognosis is not good. We serve a mighty God who is able, but if His will is otherwise, we have to accept it and just pray for the peace and comfort that surpasses understanding.
With the adoptions, the latest is that they had sent my wife some photos, they were of a different child. My bride contacted them and acknowledged such. They then sent an updated photo of our son. He is getting big. They have transitioned him to foster care till we get to China. Our daughter will remain in the orphanage till then as with being legally blind, it would be difficult to place her in foster care.
Time to get going. Praying for Jack's friend, Frank, and some others not mentioned.

Jack - I hope you guys get what you want. It sometimes is a bad omen in sports to ask for one team to win knowing that it will be your next apponent. Beware of what you ask for!
Anyway, as they say during the NCAA March Madness, bring on the final four!

Wifey made it safely to White Plains. Took her 4 hours with delays due to motor vehicle crashes. Called to say she had checked in but needed me to help her carry her luggage to her room. At least she realizes I am good for something.
Jon.........read your post about the loss of a dear cousin, and it took me down a couple of notches. Stay strong for the family. And please accept my humble prayers.
Dennis........prayers for your friend's father and his recovery.
V8......hope that flu bug has bugged out and you are feeling better. A liquid diet would be beneficial and easier on the tooth.
Jeff........I had a 1962 Oldsmobile that looked worse than some of your creations. It ran like it looked too. And when I got it, there were things growing inside that looked like the weeds in your setting.
8NT.........the news on your Mom's progress was uplifting. Prayers she continues in this vein and doesn't get discouraged.
Rich.........I have my fingers crossed and the prayer beacon turned on your job prospect.
SubmmBob.......congratulations on the job change. You won't be easily replaced up on the mountain.
JoeyD........glad to hear your wifey is feeling better. It must have been something you grilled for her.
SJ........that was some exceptional find, those Marx passenger cars. Just make sure you follow LAZ' fine example which we are starting to question: three years and "no pileups."
Fife.....why not take the Princess back very early so you don't miss the Ravens/Pats game? It is going to be some battle. The Pats defense is just what the doctor ordered for the Ravens. A grudge match for the Pats.
KEV........good luck with that broken tooth. I have walked a mile in your shoes, no fun.
Chief.......need I warn you what vacating your train space in the attic means? Another entire level of the main house that the wifey takes over.
Traindaddy, AF Ray, and Rich.........New England fans up my way are pulling for the Giants this coming weekend.
Roy.......congrats on finishing up the wiring.
Gotta run. Later , gang.
Jack.
Well, it was not too bad temperature wise here today, but I think it's going to get really cold again tomorrow. I'll be in Leesburg, VA for a couple days next week for work, but it's training and an all inclusive deal, so I suspect we will basically be trapped into long hours. I'll be glad to get back from that duty, that's for sure. Meanwhile, Char is due for a follow-up biopsy, so we are waiting to see if her Mom will be able to come stay with her for a few days. If not, my Mom said she can help out - they are local. I started working on the wiring for the new network setup, but the cable the cable company used is too short to be repurposed, so I'll have to go buy about 50 ft of cable this week some time. Otherwise, everything looks good. Mike - Ticket is a good game, I like it. I have the board game and also a version on the Xbox 360.
TARDIS is waiting!
RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.
Well, it's time for me to call it a night. I've been busy today and I'm tired. Some of the forums I go to are running really slow also and I just don't have the patience to deal with them right now. I got the Varney/Athearn hybrid F3B all together and it runs great. I got some work done on the junkyards finally. Weeds and bushes are in.Tomorrow morning I will be at my parents place. My father wants me there for breakfast.See y'all tomorrow.
I finally got some work done on the junkyards today. Got some weeds and bushes in.
Good evening everyone. Had an early case and then spent the rest of the day with the bride and kids. Did some shopping. Had to get some paints and other model items to complete the Big Boy. Made some dinner and now we are watching Courageous.
Jack, a few things that stick in my memory from Philly, the bridges, the navy yard, and of course, independence hall. The folks in Philly think they have the best sandwiches and pizza, so a shop or two would go well. Of course, I think the best pizza.was in South Hackensack, NJ in a place called The Old Judge. It is no longer there, but man, the food was great! Oh, and a happy birthday sir.
Laz, this morning, while I was heading out, I had some deer blowing at me. Too dark to see, but they snorted a few times as they ran. Many of the folks down here were saying it has been a bad year for hunting. They were mostly moving early in the morning and hardly at all the rest of the day.
Chief, sent you a link for a portable toilet that sells for about $60.00. It looked like a good deal. I have used one like it before, but never had to deal with the "cleanup", so I am not sure how practical they are.
I am waiting for a delivery from Legacy Station of a MTH NW ticket station. This will be the first MTH building on my pike. Does look pretty nice though. Right now, I am working on the scenery for the top layer.
Well, I best be going as tomorrow is a big day of surgery. Just glad I am not on call!
Blessings,
Sunny and in the 60's today, headed for a high in the 20's tomorrow. Weird.
Just noticed that I,ve turned 1000 a couple of posts ago.
Jack - that is great news on your friend.
All for now.
Good Evening
43 degrees, wow very strange weather.
No big news today, with granny gone I unplugged the phone an had a nice hour nap. I'll wait around with Banilla for the Tardis guys.....S.J.
Good evening all,
I am sorry for being AWOL the past few days. Spent Saturday at Bloomington. Had a nice visit with Lucas and fiancee. They have the apartment nicely decorated. Tried to make connections with daughter, but she had stuff going on with hubbies' side of the family. Better luck next time. Had good visit with wife's sister and her husband. Played an interesting game called Ticket to Ride. Thought game would last much longer than it did. Saw four does just outside their house late in the afternoon. Took it easy Sunday, but did get tree down and put away. Spent today running errands and paying bills. Put a lot of Christmas boxes in the attic. Back to work tomorrow. Grateful to be employed, but looking forward to retirement more and more. Still recovering from last Wednesday night. Certain moves still touchy. I had a huge brunch on the dining car for breakfast with cereal, juice, toast, bacon and a donut before sending it on to "Points East" and "Points West". TBIL and I can drive as I have missed too many rotations. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,

Good evening, Well the dentist office called back today at 8:15 AM and she told me she thought I could get in at 11:15 and the dentist was with a patient and she would call right back to confirm. Okay, so I hung around by the phone and no call. Went to the shed around 12:30 mind you and when I came back in the wife told me they had just called to tell me that they only had one dentist because the other one was on Jury duty. They did say if something opens up they would try to get me in. So no tooth repair today. Oh yeah Chief, I think I will take a pass on your offer but thanks. Good to see Green Bay play like DaBears. I won’t feel so bad now when they call me a FIB. DougM my neighbor belongs to the Aurora sportsman’s club and it is in Woodstock up there by you. A ton of dues like $700.00 + a year and an up front of like $1,800.00 or something. He is thinking of quitting and joining the one in Pontiac for much less. I don'’ get it when all he has to do is step out the door here and shoot something. Must be the skeet and long range shooting he wants to do. SJ , great looking score you got. Roy, sounds like you looking at a great place with that log home. Smbob,I loved your post on ships. Good point. RI Jack sorry I did not you passed another yeah, sounds like you had a good birthday. Also good to hear Frank is making headway. Jeffery, good to see you have plenty to do. I only spent about 3 hours in the basement yesterday but plan on some time tomorrow when the wife goes back to work. Ray, we really wanted to build true log but issues with shrinking and swelling cost to build and no return on investment made us go the way we did. Brutus, I think the Tardis crew needs to take up a collection to get RT’s computer fixed or repaired. He has been missing for tooooo long. Have a good night guys, Kev.

Day off today as we celebrate MLK day, I'll take it. Wife's at work so it's a surprise dinner for her when she gets home. My two daughters that don't live at home anymore already responded with a YES. It'll be a good night.
Jack - Happy belated birthday! After reading your post about how you sent up your wife for her trip, she could all but take a nap on the trip! Makes you think how easy it is to travel today. Wasn't that long ago AWD and the navigation systems weren't around.
DougM - As for the Jints winning yesterday, your welcome. Anytime.
SJ - That's an awesome set of cars! You stole them!
Roy - Any pics from that layout?
Kev - Nice pics. I know someone who bought a log cabin kit, 2 stories over a basement. It had a bolt system that went from the foundation to the roof for expansion. Maybe 2,800sf. He paid $450,000 for his kit. Ouch!
