Good afternoon everyone.  Finished early and now I get a few hours with my bride to watch a movie before going to get the kids.  Happy birthday Rolesville!  Chief that is a interesting story.  Have you ever read the biography of NB Forrest?  Was quite a character.  With regard to the slave trade, he was a big part of it, then, after his stint as grand dragon, he turned against it.

Joe, those are some nice pieces there.  Check out choochooauctions for a engine to pull them.  I have seen some good looking ones go for not all that much money.

Jack, good news, praying the progress continues.  Hope the humidity issue is quickly solved.

Dennis

Happy Birthday to Rolesville.....Your only 1.5 years younger than our Fire Dept.Smile, Wink & Grin

JoeD - Nice!

Jack - Good News on Frank!

I have a job interview tomorrow and just got another call for an interview ...so things are rolling right along.  Thanks for the prayers and support, guys!

Just got back from a fire call, the NJTP is expanding and building new bridges...one girder got away from "someone" and went through the windshield of a cargo van doing 65 heading North...the offending girder was heading South....patient had a head injury and nothing I could observe...van was ripped in half.  We had to disassemble the ripped off half to transport the van out.  Exciting day already...

Angel - for us and our intentions...

see ya in a bit!

Good morning

Cold and bright, 12 degrees here in North Central Illinois. It is going to get colder all day.

Babysitting my sick 16-month granddaughter yesterday went very well. She fussed until about 10 min after her dad left for work then she perked up and we had fun. She is a lot better today.  Smile

Hope the weather is better than ours for the Roseyville birthday bash. Happy B-Day  Cake

Chief, if I were a ghost I would be working on you too.   Devil

Thanks for the history lesson. That is one of the nice things about out east. Around here most towns were started up in the mid to late eighteen hundreds but there is not much history before that. The town I grew in Plainfield is the oldest community in Will County and was established in 1834 so I guess it is older than Roseyille but it’s history before that is slim. Most early history revolves around rivers and streams because of the transportation they provided.

Joe, Love those cars, great score. I was talking to the future SIL about you pull out train table yesterday. We need to build one like that for Jr.  Yes

Jeffery, have fun at the doctors today.  Embarrassed

Anj, sounds like things in 2012 will be better for you. Good luck on the jobs. Thumbs Up

RIJack great news on your pal Frank.  Angel

Well got to do something even if it is wrong,

Later guys,

Kev.

Good Mornin' Y'all From Crystal Clear Taxachusetts,

Thank you for all of your continued well wishes and prayers for my friend, Frank.  He is blessed and he doesn;t even know it!  And your encouragement has kept me focused.

I visited my buddy again at the rehabilitation hospital yesterday.  As I said at the outset of this saga, he has no immediate family, his blood relatives are somewhat distant, and he is very much a loner.....except for me.  So you KNOW he has a few screws loose. Whistling

This rehab entity is partnered with the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, so there is a fair amount of knowledge base, consultation, and some staff rotation.  The place appears top notch.  As a pencilhead with no medical knowledge, it appears to me the center is well staffed while the regimen, care, monitoring, and measurement is extensive and thorough.  Therapies: physical, occupational, and speech to name some.  I think my buddy is in good hands.

They have him up and about, doing stairs, assisted walking (walker), motion, dexterity, and strength routines.  And they have introduced to him all of the medical and lifestyle changes necessary for his cardio, pulmonary, neuro, and psychological health going forward.  One of the therapists asked me if I would be available if/when they release him to take him home......told her with a wink it would be no problema, as long as their timing of his release does not interfere (again) with the NFL playoff football schedule.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Brought him some items from home and the store that he requested, swapped out some laundry items and clothing, and dropped by his place to make sure his car battery is kept up to snuff, particularly with it sitting in the frigid temperatures we had recently.  I don't think he will be driving anytime soon.  He has other ideas, some arguably unrealistic.  I'll continue to shut up and let his docs continue to  "rearrange" his perspectives, goals, and expectations for the short and longer terms.

While his initial prognosis was "very poor,"  his recovery progress from so many serious medical issues since coming out of his sedated coma just 10 days ago defies the odds, the statistics, and the offerings of modern medicine.  As I have said, I am not a particularly religious person, but I have become more so as I get older.  Rational thought and modern medicine cannot explain either the extent or the speed of his recovery.  You can be the judge, but by all means please keep your prayers coming.  I thank you!

AlohaParadise. 9 degrees and sunny. Brrrr. Sending it on to points east.  Looked for the Tardis last night but didn't see anyone.
Ray, what was the little rail line you used to ride in Carolina? I love learning about small roads like that - I'm always looking for old right-of-way - they're all over the place in the midwest.
Jack, I never thought about the humidity or lack of it in our house - with forced air heat, it's very very low. Jon, no wonder our piano sounds so bad. I never thought of that. Sad.
Rich, congrats on cobbling together the jobs. That's what most of us seem to be doing these days. Prayers that they come through.
Joe, wowee! Those cars look great. They look just like the cars behind my 248 from the 1920s.  Happy birthday Rolesville!! Cake. Loved reading about its history.
8n and Chief, speaking of ghosts, when I give tours of our Loop campus, love to tell stories of the folks who lived and died around here. The buildings are pretty old - this one dates from 1912.

Thanks Frank for the short history of Roseyville, I truly enjoy hearing those stories as they bring history alive.  One of my great pleasures is spending time on the Great River Road next to the Mississippi from St. Louis to St. Paul on my motorcycle.  When I travel alone I find that folks are a lot more conversational and eagerly share their personal stories, especially when they are native to that area.  I find that to be true everywhere I travel, a warm smile and a few questions and doors typically open wide, I love it.

One more questions for you: knowing that you a life long resident of NC --  when you were a lad did you play with Dinosaurs before Roseyville came to be? Whistling   Sorry ........ the Devil me do it Laugh

Time to hit the Y, I apparently have too much time on my hands!

Happy B-DayHappy B-DayHappy B-DayCakeCakeCake Roseyville.  175 years old today.  Actually older than that but that is the date the NC Legislature chartered it.  Second oldest town in Wake Co.  Oldest is Raleigh which was "made".  There was no town of Raleigh when the state Capitol and Capital was built.  Mr. Roles had a stage stop that was the main stage stop between Richmond and Fayetteville.  It was the largest slave market between Richmond and New Orleans.  The Town was gated.  A big rock quarry is located just out of Town.  It operated for years and had its own railroad.  Was abandoned due to the volume of water coming in.  They actually could not pump it out as fast as it ran in.  Rolesville is "rock".  Actually the formation is named for Rolesville and runs from Stone Mountain Ga to Maine.  You have seen photos of the massive rock outcroppings at the pond.  There are areas all around Rolesville like that.  During the War of Northern Aggression, the Yankees [invading terrorist Whistling] passed through but did not stay.  The ladies of the Town and community treated the sick and  wounded Yankees just like they did their own.  Downtown burned in 1913.  We are the fastest growing town in NC for 5 years.

Good morning. It's 41° and sunny. The high will be 59° and it will be mostly sunny. It's looking like 39° for tonight.

I have a couple of hours before I have to leave to go to DeRidder so I'm doing a little work on the plastic Varney F3B. Right now it's a dummy unit. As soon as I can afford one I'll get an Athearn blue box power chassis to go under the shell. I like these older shells. They're tough, don't have a bazillion tiny details screaming 'break me' and could be handled by a gorilla and not show it. I've had the F3 A-B-B consist going on a test run with fifty cars, most of the fifty foot variety, nearly a dozen are forty footers and two are of the sixty foot variety. All are weighted to NMRA RP20.1 weight or better. The three locos are running like there are no cars there. Seemingly like no effort at all. Cars? What cars? Oh, is that the piece of paper were pulling?

See y'all later.

The F3 A-B-B consist in action.

Morning!  Today's news.  Orlando's Church Street Station historic "Orange Blossom Special" is being moved by trucks to its new home at the Florida Railroad Museum near Tampa.  The move, they say, will take a couple of weeks.  Sorry to see it go but glad it is going to a new home instead of being sold for scrap.

Konbanwa,

I was in and out of the office quite a bit today as all three kids had doctor appointments.  The appointments were routine checkups and all is well.  The three Lionel prewar passenger cars I won arrived today.  They made it here in only five days which is pretty amazing.  They were recently restored (although not perfectly) and now I just need a prewar locomotive to pull them.  I am very novice regarding prewar items and I'm not sure what locomotive would go with these cars.  If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.  They are very red in color even though the photos make them look sort of orange (I am a poor photographer).

Hello all

About 21 degrees out tonight, but the weather is good and we are open for business.

Anj - good news on the jobs. And if all else fails the guys @ the firehouse can drive down to Chief's and throw a wiz in his new bidet...

Jack - my friend who went to Costa Rica told me about the heating arrangement for the shower. 220V supplied directly to an element in the shower head. Complete w/ wire nuts and electrical tapeSurprise Perhaps Chief is onto this...

Jeffrey - safe travels tomorrow. We referred to that in the Navy as "going to see Dr. BigKnuckle"Indifferent

Need to get busy and clean and oil the Marx wind-up so I can get it off the kitchen table and to my friends son where it belongs. Any of you 2-rail Flyer guys interested in a 332 that's needs some work? That has also been on the table.

Should interview w/ the guys tomorrow afternoon on my way back home. The process continues.

Don.........you need to straighten the Chief out.  Now he thinks he needs to run a 70 amp circuit to the bidet.Surprise

Cloudy, wind out of the north west, and in the 20's today.  Had some pretty good thunderstorms last night too.

Chief - your story reminds me of the old semi-retired engineer that kept a workshop in our product engineering building when I was just starting my career.  His theory about things that dissapear right after you set them down on the bench was that they had rotated into a dimension that was orthoginal to our normal three dimensions plus time and we just could not see it.  He claimed that a Poloroid picture of the bench would make the missing object visiable.  Pure space-time continum type science here, no ghosts.

All for now.

Raining.  Busy day but got all the electrical for the Box.  Town Board was short and sweet.

Jon, mine worked.  Maybe too well.  My heating and A/C guy said it was a mold bucket.  Had to adjust all the time as outside temp went up and down.  Pain in the rear.  Turned it off and not using.  With the weather we have been having, furnace not running that much.

Mrs. Roles [his first wife] was buried in our front yard [our house sits on the lot Mr. Roles' house sat on] along with several others per history wrighter.  She was moved in 1940 when this house was built [what was there as she was buried in the early 1800's].  Anyway, we have had several sightings and incidents.  Recent one was Sunday night.  Pam and I were discussing her.  We walked to the back.  Orange cat was sitting at back storm door.  I had ignored her as she had just come back in.  We suddenly heard the back storm door bang shut [has a crazy two closers that do not work good].  Pam said who came in?  I ran to the kitchen and then back door.  Nothing.  Went outside.  Nothing.  She let the cat out [who was then sitting on the back steps].  Well, tonight after Town Board, I told the story.  Came home.  Got Thompson Center Venture out of safe.  Got it ready to ship back as national recall.  Had to take scope off.  One of the ring screws disappeared right in front of my eyes.  Went back through the shipping box, took rifle back out, cleaned the floor and looked in and under everything.  Guess she walked in and took it right before my eyes.  Guess she is back to help us celebrate Rolesville's 175th. Surprise

Sleep tight.

Good evening everyone.  Been a great day.  Had a few big cases, all went well and I was home before five.  Today was the release date for Courageous.  It is currently the number one DVD on Amazon.  Had fun with my kids pointing out all the people they know from the movie.

Don, I know what a bidet is, have even used one.  Not my thing, so I don't anticipate getting one for the house.

Jack, when I was a kid, we had an oil burner in a converted from coal heating system.  It fed steam to radiators in each room.  We used to keep a pan of water on top of the radiators in winter to add moisture to the room.  Seemed to work well.

Thanks guys for the prayers.  It is a sad situation, but the prayers and comfort the family is getting will help them through this.  They are a remarkable family.

Laz, yeah, we love the wildlife all around us.  There is a huge twelve pointer hanging around here.  I have photos of him somewhere.  I had spoken of it would be nice to take him out, but wife said they were like pets.  Shortly after that, one girdled my wife's willow tree, she said Kill It!

Well, gotta get to bed.  Have a great night every one.

Dennis

Good Evening

54 at 3pm, it's down to 32 and falling.

It was mostly a goof off day but I did run some trains for awhile. All went well, no pile ups. The Marx passenger coach's will most likely stay Mint but if Charlie comes by and can stay long enough I could stage them with a CP engine for a photo. Banilla will be ready for the thingy crew...S.J.

Jack  --  I too get "old man" hands (according to my sons and wife) and it reminds me of my Dad in his last years.  Lotion is the best answer but here's what I have observed over the years.  We have two bigger humidifiers running 24/7, one of those is for the piano room and sun room, it's absolutely vital that we keep the humidity high for the piano--a new sound board for a 6'2" grand piano is not something I like to think about.  The other big humidifier is for the living room (13 x 29) where we basically live, it has a wood burning insert that is fantastic and when I run it (like right now) it really can dry out in there fast.  In weather like what we are having now I will fill those two humidifiers twice a day, they work very well and I have to be cautious not to let it get too humid.  We have just a small one for our bedroom, our home is a ranch so I think that makes a difference also, forced air--propane high efficiency furnace.

I'm not a believer in humidifiers attached to furnaces, I've seen way too many just not do the job, I'm sure someone will chime in here soon and tell me how good theirs work, I'm glad yours works.  I also know my daily job is to keep those guys filled up but I don't mind, I do have complete control over our humidity and can adjust rooms accordingly.  I think one more important factor is soft water, when I shower at the Y it's hard water and I can see an immediate difference--that's when I slather on the lotion.  Water temperature out of your water heater also can contribute to "old man" hands and legs.

The obvious solution is for us is to move to St. Thomas, BVI -- problem solved Cool

Afternoon all.  Been real busy.  Went to Home Depot in Raleigh to get Box wire.  They had sold out yesterday. Bang Head  Had to rush back for a TV interview.  Tomorrow is Rolesville's 175th anniversary.  TV 11 wanted to run a segment on us.  Then rushed to Knightdale Home Depot [Wake Forest did not have enough] and got 210 feet of 4-4-4-6 SEU which will carry am 80 amp circuit.  Got a 70 amp breaker as 60 amps and #6 wire was suppose to be fine.  Got plastic conduit even though it is burry direct.  Put everything in pipe around here or Wifey will plant a shrub or flower right over it and cut it.

Busy day tomorrow.  Dogs to groomer 15 mitles away by 7 AM.  Remodeled McDonalds ribbon cutting at 10 AM.  Visitation at 1 and funeral at 2 for Town Clerk's Mom in Louisburg.  Pickup dogs after that.  Thursday is Fred and my work day.  Hope to get all the electrical done.  Then have power inside and not have to run big drop cords for tools and etc.

BTW: shirt sleeve weather today.  Rain tonight and cooler tomorrow.

Town Board tonight.

Jack and Jeffrey, if it is CSX, go for it.  If N&S, you are in trouble with the Chief. Wink

Later.

God bless TCA 05-58541   Benefactor Member of the NRA,  Member of the American Legion,   Retired Boss Hog of Roseyville Laugh,   KC&D QualifiedCowboy
