Good morning. It's 34° and sunny. The high will be 67° and it will remain sunny. Wind NNW at 0.

Happy Veterans Day.

So far I have only one project lined up for today. An old Mantua gondola. This is the type that has the trucks that are half plastic and half metal with a small metal coupler pocket on the metal part. It should be an interesting conversion.

Last night I heard plenty of noise outside so I went out to investigate. It was my nephew and some of friends moving stuff from one truck to another. A while back he bought a used and neglected Chevrolet Silverado and rebuilt it to running condition, but he was never happy with it. He's a Ford man. So yesterday he came across a Ford F-150 4X4 that he liked and in talking to the owner discovered that he was interested in the Silverado. So they swapped. Now my nephew has two F-150 4X4's. The one he already had has a busted tranny that he plans on replacing when he can afford to.

I got the coupler conversion on the Mantua gondola done. It now has a pair of Kadee couplers in Kadee #242 draft gear boxes. This project immediately became more interesting than the norm when I discovered that the trucks were all metal and the bottom of the car is a thick metal plate. Cutting the coupler mount off the truck proved to be difficult so I simply grabbed it in a pair of pliers and bent it back and forth until it broke off. Next I drilled and tapped two holes in the metal bottom of the car then super glued the gear boxes in place. When they were dry I installed the couplers, put on the gear box covers and secured them in place with a screw for each box. After that it was a simple matter to put the trucks back on. A quick check with my Kadee coupler height gauge showed the coupler height to be dead on.

Jeffrey, thanks for the details of your situation.  Boredom?  I hear you.  Looks like you are doing well managing your time and keeping busy.  I like that C&O gondola weathering job.  That one looks pretty authentic.  Reminds me of some I have seen in person when I worked on the railroad.

Hi Gang!

Happy Veterans Day everyone and thank you Veterans for all you have sacrificed for the rest of us.

Had a great time visiting with my old high school best friend who came up from Texas last night and this morning.   Beer    Pizza   He has not yet retired but he is close. So I showed him how to spend time on the layout. Wink

Chief: Hope your sinus thing clears up soon I have had lots of problems like that and it can really drag a person down.    Ick!

Chuck:  It will be a good day when you finally get into the basement.   Yes

fifedog; How do you decide which hair to cut? Laugh

SJ; Humm egg sandwich sounds good. Dinner

Joe: I have never been to Japan but it sounds interesting.

Guess I will go and stack some wood for the fireplace.

Later,

LawsonFarms - Your driver of the 18 is on the naughty-step.  There is even rumors that his sponsor has asked to bench him for the rest of 2011, just to get his attention.

Hello Fifedog. Interesting debate about Kyle Bush. He did get carried away, only because he bumped Hornaday under caution.

I am with the group that feels we need a little excitement in NASCAR. If it wasn't for Dale Sr., Kyle Bush and Robbie Gordon,  NASCAR would be booooring. Drivers need to be tough, not just corporate spokesmen.

Kyle's antics didn't bother Interstate Batteries, who will be the main sponsor for the Bush 18 next two Sprint races. And they have been with Gibbs for 20 years.

I wander what FedEx thinks of Denny Hamlin being switched to the Z-Line Designs car?

Dale Jr. replaced Kyle at Hendrick in '07. Kyle has 18 wins this season. How many was it again that Dale has?Embarrassed

What ever you think about Kyle Bush, you have to admit he is one talented racer ( a lot like Dale Sr.). For this year only, I am backing the 14 car.

Hey Gang,

Thanks for your prayers and good wishes....job is working out really well.  Can't wait until Monday!

Its a slow process but the guys there seem to like me and the work isn't a killer.  Its steady and I have to be a little more observant on the crash side, but I feel this will work out ok.

Happy Veterans Day to our Vets!

OK, off to the races again

Good afternoon all,

IIABSDISEI with temps in the 40s.  Work has gone well the past two days.  Met with my old boss from the factory today for lunch.  Had a nice conversation.  Met with a local HO person about possibly doing an article about his layout for MR.  Did a three mile walk at YMCA last night in a little over 45 minutes.  Not the best speed in the world, but not the worst.  Going to a local TCA tomorrow.  Not expecting to find anything, but feel like I should support the local club and see people I know.  I had bacon and waffles this morning for breakfast on the dining car before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good afternoon all,

Gray sky today and expecting rain tonight/tomorrow.  Covered up my old 87 Buick with car cover account leaking window.  Took it out for a spin today to charge up battery and keep the tires from getting square from sitting too much.  Went over to neighbors house today to thank him/her for keeping an eye on our place while I was gone and being nice to my wife with food etc.  Also visited for a minute with the three collie dogs over there.  They are very curious of strangers in their yard but love you to death after they get to know you.

Trying to watch my diet now and it's a real job.  Ice cream is public enemy #1.  I can deal with the rest of it.

Called an old train buddy and close friend today.   He is the one that just got out of the hospital before my trip.  Seems to be doing better now.

Evening all.  Did not do a lot of what was planned.  Met friend Fred at BoJangles for breakfast.  Then  to range to shoot in his .270 Short Mag.  Told him scope was touching the barrel.  No listen.  Then it would not zero.  Sure the rings and mount were not tight.  Went to Hunters Haven and remounted scope on high rings.  Then had to drive to a neighboring gun shope [a biggie] to get more ammo.  See, .270 Short Mag is not a popular round anymore.  Ammo costs about 1/3 more than regular center fire ammo.  I'd buy another rifle for the cost of ammo.  Anyway.  Finally got zeroed about 3:45.  Rush Neddles the cat to the vet for her checkup.  [they close at 5].  Off to the hunting woods down east tomorrow morning early.  Back way after dark.

This afternoons project was a bit tougher than most. I had a turnout fail after ten years of service so of course it would have to be replaced. I'd been putting it off for about a week but today I looked at it and decided it was time. The part that I was hesitant about is that it's located on the east side of the main part of the layout. For those who remember what the layout looks like that's to the left of the Shell station where there are such classics as a 55 Chevy, a 72 Gremlin, an Olds 442 and the infamous AMC Pacer. Well, the turnout is about one foot to the left of that scene. The whole scene drops out from the bottom leaving an access hole. Getting to that hole requires going under that side of the layout and standing up in the hole which puts the top of the layout at waist level. I managed to get to a standing position and leaning against the layout to use it for support. From there I used my Dremel to cut the rails and roadbed of the turnout then cut out some of the area around it then pried it up with a screwdriver. That was the easy part. Next I heated the soldered rail joints and pulled the cut rail stubs out with my pliers then vacuumed up the mess left behind. Now I had to prepare the new turnout. I cut the locking and index tabs off the ends of the roadbed then put it in place starting with the main and diverging tracks first. Those weren't too hard. To get the other end in I had to lift the end of the next piece of track and managed somehow to pop half of one the rails loose. Well, that means I had to replace that straight section too. No problem, It actually made getting the end of the turnout in place. Now all that remains is to securely anchor the new sections and solder the rail joiners then ballast those sections. That however is a project for another day. The new turnout is in, wired and tested and it works flawlessly.

This is the old turnout. The points are locked to the main route and will not move to the diverging route. They start to then snap back.

And here is the new turnout and adjoining straight section in place.

Maybe anchoring the pieces will be tomorrows project. That depends on how I feel tomorrow.

Well, I had a lot of plans for today, but I wasn't feeling well and just sat around watching tv and playing some videogames until after lunch.  I got cleaned up and did feel better then, so did the grocery shopping.  We had an early dinner after picking up the dog, who seems to be doing okay after the surgery.  She will need some time to recover, but we're glad to have her home.  Two of the stones were really big, like the size of a dime or so.  Then we watched the new Harry Potter movie and Captain America - both were great!

Jack - not a lot is allowed, she's not to do a lot of jumping up and down, but that's not a problem.  She's an indoor dog anyway.  She's adapting to the cone of shame, but it will be a while before she's back to her old self.

TARDIS is ready, so let's hit  that road boys!  Fuse = Lit.

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Mornin' boys.  Sunny & 38.  The "loyal" leaves are waiting for me outside.  I am growing to dislike Maples.

Plans are still to have the boys over to the yatchet tonight for cards.  I'll check with momma2b around noon.

Thank you Laz. I do the best I can with what little I have.

Good morning. It's 48° and partly cloudy. The high will be 71°. It will be partly cloudy.

Last night I reworked the jammed turnout I replaced yesterday and made it good for manual operation only. The action is a bit stiff but it locks in the position it's set to. I'll save it in case I need a turnout for a little-used spur sometime in the future. This morning I'll be cleaning up the mess left over from yesterday.

To Jim's train buddies

I sincerely want to take this time to let you know how much I appreciated all the encouragement and well wishes I got. And for those who took the time to send up prayers. I'm not a person who likes to sit around, but I am learning what I can do and what I can't do now. Also I want everyone to know that Jim took good care of me and we never lost our temper once.

Good morning friends,

Another cool Gray day here.  Got a little rain last night but not much.  Just enough to make the ground wet.

Chief, good luck on your second try at the deer hunt.  We drove back to Raleigh on Tuesday night and I saw a lot of places I thought would be occupied by deer but thankfully we didn't see any in the road.  I was with a friend years ago when we hit one in Northern California at night near the coast.  Knocked out our headlight on the right but deer ran off and we couldn't find it.  Went to see my niece's husband's hog farm while in North Carolina.  That's a lot of Bar-B-Que on the hoof.  Lots of woods and land around the farm for deer too.  One of their kids (age 15) is raising goats for sale.  Doing pretty good at it too.  Been a long time since I was around any livestock.

Water pipe underground in street in front of the house is still leaking and getting the street all wet.  City knows about it but probably won't work on it until next week.  Meantime they tell me to continue using my water as usual.  Hope I don't get any sand in my pipes.

Went for a walk for the last couple of days but might have to back off for a while until my back gets better.  Need to let Doc know what is going on.  Also have appointment with Gastrointeroligist next week.

Firefighter neighbor just came over and gave us some homemade potato salad he made.  I asked him if that was one of his talents cooking at the firehouse but he said his mom taught him how to do it.

Wife and I had a small pizza last night with chicken, bacon and cheese.  Didn't sit too well.  Had to keep getting up and drinking water all night.  God knows what they put in these things nowadays.

Time is flying.  Thanksgiving is right around the corner and Christmas not long after that.  Thinking about cooking a Turkey this year.  Wife and I were out of town for the last two years at Thanksgiving.  Price on turkeys a little higher here this year for some reason but still not too bad.

Might get out in the garage today and run some trains.  They need a workout.

Have a good weekend everybody,

Ray

Good evening everyone.  Long day as I Amon calla shad to go in for a case earlier.  Prior to that, had to make some stuffed shells for a friend of my brides who just had a baby.  Also made a bourbon chocolate pecan pie.  After dropping that off this afternoon, we took the kids to pick out some new fish for the aquarium.  Hope to make an early night of it as I am on camera at church tomorrow.

Jack, yeah I missed that chance, but I am sure they will be back.

Chief, I have dealt with such people.  They need to be shown before they believe.  With regard to the "WSM" rounds, I don't see doing it wigh anything smaller than a 300.  Just my bias.

Gotta run. Hope everyone has a blessed weekend.

Dennis

PS:  little edit, through the special children's hospital, they have a video on you tube and we were able to our son being fed and having fun...it was quite a moment.

Well train station and Drill Press arrived this am. The drill press had to be put together ( not that hard to basically figure out except the chuck) but the instructions which I thought they forgot was on the bottom of the box under everything so I guess they made box then added instruction booklet and then first piece of Styrofoam the drill it self and the pole it sat on then next piece of Styrofoam the base and then the plate you place your item to be drilled on and a box with the chuck in it and a little bag with chuck key and a couple of bolts and that was it lol. anyway got it together and after reading the book looks like I need to change the speed on the press ( moving belt up or down) as it states the smaller the drill bit the faster you want it to turn so by the size I plan on using most of the time ( drilling preholes in track) it needs to be in fastest speed.
For the money it seems to be a good little drill press will find out when I start drill some items. Need to get some type of clamping system for it also.

Well not much else going on here the train station is by Walthers and looks great I really like the look of it. May look into buying some other building by them if they come up on ebay for a good price.

but the instructions which I thought they forgot was on the bottom of the box under everything so I guess they made box then added instruction booklet and then first piece of Styrofoam the drill it self and the pole it sat on

Probably even simpler than that. I used to work in a wood shop where they make office furniture. Usually the stuff goes out assembled but once in a while the customer wanted it sent flat pack. The box would be upside down and what would be the top pad went in first followed by the pieces with cushioning material between them then what would be the bottom pad and last but not least went the assembly book. The box was then glued shut then turned over and the address label applied. The reasoning behind this is that the customer would flip the box over then cut around what moments before had been the top and pull the box off. That being done the book would be right on top.

Evening all!

Long couple of days. Yesterday evening was our last HS football game. A bunch of us parents of seniors got together for the final send off pep rally and then we went to dinner before the game. Our team lost unfortunately but we had a great time.

Tired and calling it a night. Have a great evening all!

Regards, Roy

LAZ  this is for you.  Seven pointer, 1 1/2 year old 95 lbs.  Ran in front of my stand at 30 minutes before dark in the thicket.  He is now at the processor's.

dwiemer

Chief, I have dealt with such people.  They need to be shown before they believe.  With regard to the "WSM" rounds, I don't see doing it wigh anything smaller than a 300.  Just my bias.

.243 95 gr.  Shot placement.

Fred shot a spike this moring.  Small mangement deer.  He shot a big doe and we could not find it in the dark.  He has a "blood light" and it works well.  Going back tomorrow AM to find it.  Cold tonight so will be OK.

Now to clean up.

Later.

God bless TCA 05-58541   Benefactor Member of the NRA,  Member of the American Legion,   Retired Boss Hog of Roseyville Laugh,   KC&D QualifiedCowboy
