Evening all

It has been a while since I checked in.

Chief - I will keep that family in my prayers

Roy - Congrats!

I bought a non-train toy; a 1943 Mosin.  I'm looking forward to stripping off the cosmoline and shooting it.  It looks like it has never been shot.  $131 with all the accesories and bayonett.  762 and kicks like a mule.

Good night and may God bless

Jim

Evening all!

Thanks again for the well wishes. Missus and I had a very pleasant dinner at a nice local restaurant. Home watching the MAVS struggle. Dirk has a fever and it shows - but as commentators say - Dirk cannot carry the team at this level - the other players need to step up. If MAVS go down tonight they would have to win 3 in a row - which is possible but not likely.

Tomorrow is daughters 20th B-Day so I get another dinner out - too many calories.

Chief - that is just tragic but as the others have commented - how can one put a pseudo muscle car in a kids hands and expect them to be safe. My first car was a hand me down 66 Plymouth Belvedere 4 door with 265 V8. It was wheels and was not until college 2nd year that I had my own car. Both my kids drive a 4 door GM Malibu platform vehicle. The wheels are nice and the motors are a 4 and a small 6 - bangers - which they now appreciate since gas is $3.50.

All stay safe and have a great day tomorrow!

Regards, Roy

Prayers for those families, Chief.  What a shame.  I don't blame that kid who was driving.  In Saint Louis/MO, kids are not allowed to have other kids as passengers and this is one reason - they try to show off for each other.  That boy was probably in a car driven by friends who were able to do this trick and so thought he could do it too.  It's just a shame.

Can't imagine what the Dad is going through.  And its got to be tough on the other parents not putting blame on him also.  Really tough situation !!

Had some really interesting news today.  Found out the layout I had worked on the past 4 months, is now going to be disassembled and relocated!   Actually, I was involved in the selection of a site to relocate the layout too.  The owner is selling the house where the layout has been, and it must be moved out by the 1st.  So we are going to disassemble it and move it to this new location.  Then it is estimated that within the next 6 months we will be moving it again to its final location. This was not totally new news, we knew it would happen.  The build was done with the idea of being able to take it down in modules. So now to do the disassemble so it can go back together well.  Going to be a job, for sure!

Planing on going down to the "club" tomorrow and runs some trains, maybe an Operating Session.  Last trip did a Lash-Up (Big Boy- Mikado-A5 Switcher-SD70 ACE, was a great setup, could really smoke this place up in a hurry.

Planned on starting to dig the roadbed for the G-Scale today, but that didn't happen.  Ended up installing a screen door.  Oh well have to try another day.

Prayers for those in need, keep healty and safe all.

Don

Another 90+ day here.

Brutus - I heard on the radio news this morning that St Louis had an earthquake.  You feel anything?

Chief - indeed a sad story.  There was a stretch of road near my house in Bowling Green, Ky. that had a hill, immediately followed by a slight turn.  Several cars driven by kids went off into the trees there during the time we lived there.  One was fatal.  Similar story - kids, high speed, around graduation time.

My 'training wheels' were a 1967 Ford Falcon 4 door with a 200 inch six banger.

Going to be an interesting 2nd half of the year.  We just won the bid on another new part at work.   I need to make tools appear in January.  No finalized part print yet.  I'm beginning to worry about time off for holidays in November and December.

All for now.

Good morning all,

It is hotter still in SE Indiana.  Game tonight.  Scrimmaged with "my" soccer girls last night.  Last of stuff from dad's house is out except for furniture kids still want.  Busy day at work yesterday.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a clear and sunny 72 degrees. Going up to 88 today with sunshine.

Today is another busy day. I have an errand to run and chores around the house. Neighbor, from the farm next to us, came over last evening and cut up the tree that was hit by lightening. part of it landed on the shed roof. Have two holes in the roof about 4 inches each. need to get them repaired. Lucky there was no worse damage.

Dining car is here with Cheerios for breakfast.

Y'all have a great Wednesday.

That will teach you to levy big fines against southern gentlemen - DETENTION!

The high pressure dome and 99/100 degree temps are moving east - more punishment....Paradise

Gonna be mid-90's here today - balmy! Same for next week, 70's in the am.

MAVS stayed tough last night. We have hope!

Chuck - glad you have a neighbor willing to assist. I did the same when the tree in the back yard of a neighbor lady (in her 80's) feel into the alley blocking it. I got the chain saw out and cut it all back and cleared the alley until they could get a company to come out and remove it all.

Have a great day all!

Mornin' fellas and gals:      Gonna be a scorcher here today.  Pulled the shades down on the porch already.    Young lives tossed away, so sad.  My grandson's school chum got a brand new motorcycle for graduation.  Went for a spin, slammed into a chevy pickup broadside. Killed himself.   Whole high school turned out for the wake.  These events must be shared to show us how fragile we are.  Life is so precious.  Please tell the young ones to drive defensively.  We all can drive a little safer.      later.

Think good thoughts, do good deeds!

Aloha. looks like another scorcher here. Isn't it funny how the not even 2 years old A/C picks the time it's needed most to stop working? I think it's either the capacitor or motor. Going to try to walk the teenager through trying to reset it to just get it started. Ah well.

Good Morning

79/94 today

Storms tomorrow will bring the temp. down so they say. It is sad that so many teen deaths come at the end of the school year, I'm sure it happens all over this beautiful country of ours. Michigan has or will have new laws about how many teens can be in a car. Sounds like a step in the right direction. I'm going to enjoy this summer day, I will stay out of the sun though.

Happy Hump Day...S.J.

Good Mornin' Ya'll From Sunny Taxachusetts,

Was 62 overnight and will pass 90 today and 95 tomorrow, then back into the 70s.  Humidity is pushing 80% right now.  Ocean water temps still a shade under 60.  Still no rain and it has been over two weeks since we had anything measurable......bone dry here.  No precipitation in the forecast until Sunday.

We have a variable speed whole house fan.  It is 36 inches in diameter and is mounted in the upstairs hallway ceiling.  Has spring loaded louvered doors/slats.  With a bunch of windows open about 9 inches, the fan pulls the air in from the outside, then out of the house, and pushes it into the attic.  It will move the equivalent of all the air in a 2,400 square foot house every 4 minutes.  The relatively cooler air that is pushed into the attic cools down the attic (150 degrees) by pushing that hot air out a peak vent and the soffit vents.  On a hot day like today will be, we cool down the house and the attic early with the whole house fan.  Then we turn off the fan and crank the a/c early (if necessary) while it is still cool outside to get the inside inside temps down to about 70 and drop the inside humidity, if necessary.  Then we turn off the a/c until the inside temps hit about 78-80 (mid afternoon).  This saves energy because we do all of that stuff early in the morning when the a/c isn't fighting the most extreme outdoor temperatures.

The Boston Bruins lost two heartbreakers on the road to Vancouver but snapped back at home.  It took a cheap, season-ending cheap shot (concussion) 3 minutes into game 3  on arguably one of the most productive Boston players (in the playoffs) to ignite Monday night's Bruin 8-1 victory.  Vancouver player suspended for the balance of the playoffs.  A Stanley cup would look good in Boston.  Sorry boys, the Red Sox have come out of a slight hiccup, have won 4 in a row, and beat the Yankees in NY last night to pull back into a first place tie with them.

Chief.......there is probably not one parent on this forum who hasn't feared for their children exactly the scenario that happened to that family.  My heart and prayers go out to them.

Re my first car........my Dad wouldn't let me have a car of my own while I was in school and living under his roof.    He felt that girls and a car would be the two greatest obstacles to my keeping my nose to the educational grindstone.  He had three dictums when it came to driving privileges.

(1)  He always used to say:  "Bs and then wheels.  Otherwise, you are walking."  He would let me use one of his cars.  My Dad's cars had V8s.  I got the occasional use of a couple of my Uncles' beaters, a beyond burned out and rusted out 1962 330 c.u. V8 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 (it wasn't dynamic) and a similarly burned out, smashed up 283 c.i. V8 1962 Chevy Impala.  Both had over 100K miles on them and ran, barely.

(2)  "ONE speeding ticket = indefinite loss of all driving and car privileges while you are living under my roof."  He alone was the judge, jury,  executioner, and parole board.  Mom backed him up.

(3)  Except for special occasions, "That car will be in the driveway by midnight or you lose the use of it."

My Dad knew a police officer that had hospital duties that included the emergency room at a local hospital.   My Dad took me in to witness up close and personal the vehicular carnage being wheeled in on gurnies and to listen to the officer describe what he saw, every night, mostly after midnight when the worst of the crazies remain out on the road.  I saw some gruesome stuff.  My Dad's take, "Son, you have a serious responsibility to yourself and to others when you are driving an unforegiving and lethal 4,000 pound weapon."

Yes, like most I had my indiscretions behind the wheel of a car.  The foundation had been laid when I didn't know any better.  But I have not had a moving violation or an at-fault accident since 1969.  My own first "real car" was a 4 year old 1969 Corvette, took me 2 years to save up the downpayment while driving $50 junkers.

Later, gang.

Good morning all,

I'm going to stop reporting on our weather because it will be extremely hot for the next three months; I'll let you all know if it ever drops below 95.  The 7y/o son's baseball team won both of their games last night and he did very well.  He went 3 for 5 over both games: two singles, one double, and two RBIs.  He fielded very well too: one outfield assist and all three outs in one inning as an infielder.

I had a brief two-mile run this morning.  I did not wake up early enough to beat the heat.  I have a couple of meeting to attend today at work and work on one report - nothing too demanding.

I did not buy my first car until after I arrived to my first duty station with my wife.  It was a used '92 Pontiac Grand Prix Richard Petty edition.  It was a fast car but fortunately I was a little more mature.  In high school I was at the mercy of using my parents' car, an '88 Chevy Cavalier - I was not picking up any ladies in that thing.

Cooking show comment: Try pan frying your eggplant or chicken parm with olive oil.  While it does not have as high of a smoke point as vegetable or canola oil, it has better flavor.  Italians cook with olive oil and dress salads and finish pastas with extra virgin olive oil.  Of course, eggplant and chicken parm are Italian-American dishes, not Italian dishes.  Chef

Jack – Your Sox won the first game last night but that's all you're going to get.Angry

Good day,

Joe

Afternoon all.  Hot and dry.  Put soakers down and ran them for a while.  Getting ready to shower and do Mayor things for teens parents.  Dogs at groomers and have to get them and then sit the GrandDad and GrandMom's house for the visitation time.

Bye for now.

BTW: black ribbon bows are going like "hot cakes".  Town is stepping up to the "plate".

Lunch Time:

Regarding the crash and the teens in NC, I agree with everyone. It is a terrible situation and definitely a parent's worse nightmare. My son graduates High School tonight and a friend of his has the identical Challenger. Like the Chief said that the kids get the cars going to see if they can get all 4 wheels off the ground at the hump in the road. I don't think that it makes a difference what kind of car or how much horse power it has because thinking back we would have tried it with RI Jack's Dad's Chevy or the "Dynamic Olds" and the results may have been the same. When in HS, I had quick cars, but I respected the street, because the garage that I worked in did police towing and I was at the scene of many a wreck. The image that comes to my mind was that of a good friend's sister pinned in a demolished VW Bug. She was dead and the accident was a result of 2 jerks racing thru a tunnel with one going in the wrong direction.

I am sure that we all have sad stories like the ones mentioned. Hopefully, others will learn from this tragedy, but youth think that they are indestructable.

Chief, this car crash story is so sad.  Prayers for your community to get through this.  I remember a friend of mine going through this with the loss of his son years ago.  That was bad enough but in your area, there were so many.

Don, sounds like you are as busy as the Chief.  Where do you get all that energy.   I know it's not from grits.

Nice cloudy and cool morning here.  Reminds me of mornings like that in Virginia.

Mornin' All.

June gloom seems to be hanging in pretty strong this morning.

I think Hudson John had it rite, kids learn much more with their eyes and very little with their ears. Any of you guys remember the "Signal 30" videos we had to see when in the military.

Buckeye, I was referring to the youtube link you posted a long time back that became my grandson's favorite. "Little Toy Trains by Roger Miller" :

Chief, A big "Tip of the Hat" to you and the other townsfolk for the support of the families. Just goes to show what is so good about smaller towns or close knit communities.

Chief its a terrible day when something like that happens but just maybe the town will look at that road now and do something to remove the hump in it that everyone wants to see if they can get 4 wheels airborne. Something to take the joy of trying it out of it. Sorry the so young had to pay the price for this but hope lesson can be learn by all there from it.

Well got done work for the day time to relax for a while work 12 hrs tomorrow. (4 ot) need to get them while I can as there ending real soon. as it is I'm cut from about 32 every 2 weeks to just 8 now and there disappearing also.

hope all having a good day talk to you all later.

Good evening all,

We had a quiet evening at home tonight.  The wife made breakfast for dinner which is always delicious.  And thankfully, I didn't bother to watch the Yankees game.  Those blasted Red Sox thumped them again.

I did not have any train time tonight either, but I'm hoping to work on the layout this weekend.

Good night,
