LAZ.... The felt shows the dust easily. It looks more realistic, if you leave it dusty. I have a small vacuum with a soft brush attachment that nicely sweeps it up , when I want to clean it.

Good morning all,

It is still frigid in America's heartland.  The Scout Expansion set arrived yesterday.  I never thought I would ever see Scout style rolling stock ever made again, but there they were.  In a way the hobby has come full circle for me.  I started off with O-27 stuff and now I am back in the game.  "Saucy Wench" and I spent the evening doing some Christmas shopping and more decorating.  It was a good evening.  I had bran muffins on the dining car before sending it on to "Points East".  TBIL and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Mike C. from Indiana

Cloudy and low 20's here today.  Having some fun with my new boss who just moved up from SaoPalo, Brazil.  I've been explaining to him how it is not really cold yet.

SumBob - "Make it so."

Pat - thanks for sharing the 'In the Pines' clip.  I enjoyed it.  I've got a version by Boxcar Willie, but the instrumentation is not an intricate.

All for now.

Good evening everyone.  Been a long few days as we are busy and short handed, so it makes for longer schedules.  My bride is busy too and we have her side of the family coming in this weekend....knew we should have gotten a small house!  Anyway, new curtains need to be hung, and of course, they are the long, thick ones that I needed to reinforce the area the rods are to be mounted on.  Ended up using some white oak that I routed the edge to make it look nice.  Has to hold up a fair amount of weight.

Glad I caught Jack's "cliff notes" on the pot as I missed several pages.  Doug, I am sure I will be there before too long and hope that any such incidences are minor.  Brutus, so happy that Char is home.  Will continue prayers and hope that she is out of the hospital for good.  Bob, sounds like you must have some good folks to work with and I know they are happy to have such a friend as you to lend your truck that way.  I guess being on the mountain with the same folks on a frequent basis builds such relationships.

Laz, one of the guys I sometimes work with got a buck last week.  It is a 12 point, with a 23 inch inside spread.  He is real happy about it and is having it mounted, this is in spite of the fact that he got it by hitting it with his truck and causing $3500.00 worth of damage!  He was on his way to hunt with his son.

It has been quite cold here.  At night, the temps have gone down to the high teens.  During the day, it is in the mid to upper 40s.  I just hope my fruit trees survive.

Hope it is a blessed week for everyone here.
Dennis

Good Evening

Well the temp shot up to 21 this afternoon. Lot's of sun but too cold for melting. Jack: We don't go to Detroit, have to drive through it some time but thats it. Of course thousands of people do every day. Nothing there but miles of empty lots burned out houses and tumbleweeds. They have spent millions on the river front while the neighborhoods rotted. I got banilla for anyone warm enough to eat it...S.J.

Evenin' boys.  Happy B-Day English Cake.  The persistant windy cold air mass makes it kinda painfull to be outside for any length of time.  One more 8 hr shift of daywork then I'm off thru Christmas.

Probe - I fell asleep during first half, but wifey and fifelings thought it was very funny.  And of course, there's Selma...

Laz - If nothing else, they are an entertaining team to watch.  To me, a win is a win.  And I never think the 53 players on the other team are just supposed to lay down because of all the Ravens' weapons.  And of course, every football fan wants to see the Ravens and Steelers line up to knock the snot out of each other again. Yes

About the same. Early on I tried roping a small (400#) calf in a large coral. Went for a fast ride around the coral before I finally let loose of the rope! Learned quick to coral them into a chute.

RT,

I am with Jack on the neighbor's leaves.  Use a leaf blower and make it look like an accident.  My neighbor has a large oak tree (is it too much to ask for the tree to fall on the sunfire?), and her leaves end up being our problem.

Jack,

Personally, I'd rather deal with mechanincal wear over rust.  I'd hate to be in MA with the winters.

Fife,

          Is Grown Ups any good?

Just got back from some Christmas shopping.  I went to Lowes to get some parts for the AF 30B that I've been working on.  I am also waiting on an 18B that I originally intended to use as parts source for the 30B.  It was only $48, which was also the price of one NOS throttle knob and I fgured that it would be nice to have spare parts.  I'll probably fix it up, because it just needs all three light covers, one handle, and three terminal nuts.Whistling

I am also still working on the 481 to 491 diesel roar swap.

Good morning all,

I knew it was too good to last.  Somebody pointed that snow cannon to the West and screwed up our weather.  No snow but we are getting colder air with rain predicted for Friday and Saturday.  Temps will be in the low 60's for the rest of the week after today which will be 69. Brrrr!

Doug, thanks for the link.  That bluegrass piece sure sounds lonesome but good pictures that brought back a lot of memories.

SJ, I like grits and I like egg nog but together?  I'm not sure about that.

Don, you are lucky you got a piece of coal instead of one of those buffalo chips in a sock.

Put down a circle of Fastrack yesterday around the tree and it fits just right.  I'm running a recent version of the Lionel General set.  Even with a layout in the garage, it's still nice to have a train around the tree.  This might give me a chance to run one of my older trains  It is a 224 and three metal passenger cars (pre war).  It was a gift from a childhood friend.  We both played with that train when we were young.

later,

Sorry to be MIA the last four days.....been on the Holiday treadmill and got 6 pages behind on the POT.  Our temps got down to 8 last week, then jumped into the mid 40s.low 50s for the weekend, accompanied by 3 inches of rain (all day Sunday) and wind gusts to 55mph.  No snow yet!!!

Saturday was nice, got to shop for balsam roping (garland), a wreath, and out Christmas tree.  It was the first time we didn't freeze to death during the process in quite a few years.  Re prices, someone forgot to tell our favorite Christmas tree guy that prices were supposed to be flat compared to last year......he must have gotten ripped off by the dastardly Reb folks in North Carolina and just passed it on.  Chief, are you reading this?

Sunday we travelled 3 states, driving 230 miles in a veritable monsoon to make a Christmas party up in Maine and dog training in NH.  Missed the entire Pats/Bears game.  Day began at 5:30AM to pick up bakery pastries for the party and didn't get home Sunday night until 11PM.  The last leg home was an adventure in travel as folks just didn't "get it," vascillating between 40mph and 70mph (too slow or too fast) on the interstate instead of:  driving a steady, moderate speed, relaxing, and listening to Christmas tunes on the radio.

For the entire drive, XM satellite radio channel 4 (or 5?) had the best Christmas programming, commercial free.  No junk filler music either.  Nothing but classics from Tony Bennet, Frank Sinatra, Burl Ives, Patty Paige, the Lennon Sisters (and other Sister acts), Perry Como, Andy Williams, Elvis, Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Rosemary Clooney, Mormon Tabernacle choir, and the list goes on.  Perfect.

I received a call from Doberman Rescue up in NH, and they asked me to do a home visit to check out some prospective adopters.  The organization is awash with orphans.....so many folks either splitting up and moving to "no dogs allowed" quarters or, more often, folks losing their homes and can't afford keeping their pups.  Prayers for the latter. I'd be tempted to sell a kidney if it came to it.  Sad

Brutus.....the news on Char's checkup was good to hear. Thumbs Up You have my prayers that the Big Guy upstairs helps the two of you keep your eyes focused down the road and sustains your spirits every step of the way in between.  My father (RIP) used to remind me that the things in life that will come to mean the most will be the ones that were the most difficult to achieve.  Char's health and strength will be achieved.  In the interim, if you need any advice helping Char on her weight gain objectives, there are quite a few guys on the Pot that have the dietary equivalent of  PHDs in the discipline.  If she wants to look downright pregnant, call on me. Whistling

MikeC.....prayers for the Saucy Wench. Angel  Hang in there, buddy.  Wifey needs a calming and reassuring presence.  That would be you!

Chief....I've got two vintage Remington 1100s with vented ribs, one 12 ga. and one 20 ga.  You wouldn't like them, not full choke.  But at your age and with your eyesight, might not be a bad choice in the field. Whistling  You'll hit the intended target and everything else in the general vicinity. Smile, Wink & Grin

A certain somebody is closing in on 11,000 posts!  How did he do that?  Any observations, boys?

SJ.....hope you have caught up on your sleep since Sunday.  Lions win again!!!!  Did you go to the Vikings/Giants game last night?  Probably not, couldn't find the bullets for your gun. Big Smile

Pat....got to wondering after your comments on your wanderlust cows, how good are your cow roping skills?  As good as your deer roping skills Wink

RT......raking leaves still?  If you just "leave" them alone, most of them will blow away.  Or wait until the neighbors go out and then hastily move them yonder with a leaf blower. Devil

Rich.....did I read your post correctly?  331K miles on the '95 Neon?  Bet you have the mileage record amongst us!  I got 12 years and 115K on the iron I traded in last January, so I am not even competitve.  Properly maintained, American cars don't wear out, they rust out. Thumbs Up  So what kind of personal mileage records have ya'll racked up?

Don.....showed up with a camera, shades, and suntan lotion at your place for the BBQ but no one was home.  Forced to default to your "neighbor's" place, had nothing but nice things to say about you.  Whistling

Laz/DougM.....I was quite conflicted Sunday over the Bears/Patriots game.  Spent all of my life rooting for the Bears, but 22 years here in New England has clouded my allegiances.  Game Sunday reminded me of the road to the Superbowl for the 1985 Bears with their killer defense.  Playoff game at Soldier Field in Chicago.  Heavy snow commenced just as the (fair weather wimps) Los Angeles Rams (taking notes Don, DougDG, RaySP?) took to the field to a mock standing ovation from the Chicago fans.  Lambs to the slaughter.  Final score, 24-0, Chicago.  Rams HOF running back Eric Dickerson held under 50 yards rushing and his team held to under 150 yards total offense for the game.  Smile, Wink & Grin

DougM....you have finally been parentally christened and are now a vested member of an exclusive entity, the Crystal Lake Automobile Demolition Club. Hope your deductible is low.  Don't feel bad; rather, feel a part of an elite group of us.  My teen daughter t-boned a Catholic priest in her first year driving.  My teen son?  An entire anthology for another day.....think he hit stuff on purpose. Bang Head  I wish I had it to do over again.  Seems like when my kids bought their own cars, started paying for their own auto insurance and the deductibles, and started paying for their own mistakes, pure unadulterated luck found them and the accidents and tickets miraculously and totally disappeared.

John Baker..... Happy B-Day!!!!  Wifey reported upon her return that the weather during her UK trip was moderate.  Didn't know what all the fuss was about.  Was disappointed the Brits didn't keep a stiff upper lip during the affair.  Observed that if you guys drove on the correct side of the road and put your steering wheels on the left you might drive better in the white stuff.  And that is coming from a driver of the fairer sex! Laugh

JimSP......re your kid's snow day, around here school officials are too quick to pull the plug on school when the flakes start to fall, then gripe when the kids have to go to school until July to make up the hours and the days.  When Chuck, SJ, and I were yutes, we had to WALK uphill in 3 feet of snow with minus 5 degree temps and 40mph winds to get to school, both ways.  Chief was upper crust and RODE in a buckboard. Whistling

NAVYJACK....you had better scale back on the trains purchases.  It won't be long until your better half takes aim on that new car.  You'll have to start selling your body to make the payments.  But the California boys can give you some pointers on that score. Wink

SubBob....was reading how you left yourself up on the mountaintop without wheels.  What would you do in an emergency?  Ski or snowboard down the mountain for help, or order a delivery pizza and hitch a ride? Smile

Fife.....Ravens OT victors, but almost gave the game away last night.  Gotta finish those.  Sitting on a lead doesn't seem to work in the 2010 NFL.

Banks.....speaking about outdoor Christmas decorating, I went out last Friday to run some extension cords for the outdoor lights.  I always keep them in one spot, and all together.  3 of 4 are MIA, figure the kids struck again when I wasn't looking and these will turn up over at their places in a few months along with some of my missing coolers and tools.  My wife thinks I misplaced all 3 and forgot where I put them.  She's the same with all of my stuff that comes up missing, defends the kids.  Then when it turns out to be the kids......

Gotta run!  Hope I didn't miss anyone needing prayers.  Tis the season to be jolly, even for those who eat grits.

Jack.

Hello all,

Brutus, Great news

16 degrees and windy here. We got a break in the weather last weekend and I got most of the outside decorations up. Son and I are going to do Dad's big pine trees tonight while he's off. BRRRR.

Any of you that get coal for Christmas, send it my way, Been shoveling it pretty steadily into the boiler,

Jack, Mrs doesn't whip me to put the coal in. She's usually complaining I put to much in. (that time of life)

No deer on Saturday. been hard pressed to even locate signs of deer. I have a muzzle loader license but I'll probably hunt bunnies late season. Haven't done that in years.

John Baker  Happy B-Day

Laz, that sounds like a great idea.

The SS fund is calling me . Best get busy.

HIa GUYZ,

A  BALMY 15 degrees this morning with 5 MPH winds feels just like central OHIO.  Put some 15 lb black felt paper down on layout last nite, partly for roads and streets and partly for putting down other ballast and dirt features.  If I want to change layout I just roll it up and start over agin with new tar paper.  It saves my Homesote underneath.

FIFE, YUZ got LUCKY last nite.

Stay frosty,

Good morning all,

It may finally be sunny in SE Indiana today, but still brutally cold.  Brutus, great news about Char!  Sorry to hear she fell though.  We spent yesterday taking cars back and forth to mechanics and getting Christmas decorations out and set up.  I think we finally figured out how to do the decorations.  First get everything else out, then set up tree.  Should be much easier.  Got an e-mail from my Norwegian soccer friend's SO.  It is a good sign things are well with them.  Really cheered me up.  PT Cruiser is running fine again as it was just a sensor that had gone bad.  I had bran muffins on the dining car for breakfast yesterday and today.  TBIL anytime and I can drive.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Well the receiver finally warmed up today so we are going to go into it tomorrow. That means I switch to days and maintenance mode 'til I go home on Wednesday. The good news is the mechanic came up today who is my ride home. I gave the truck I brought to one of the engineers to go home on Friday. Not that I was going anywhere over the weekend, but I kinda wanted to make sure I had a ride home when my shift ended.

Jim - great to hear the Char gets to stay home! Keep her on the mend!

NavyJack - somehow, someway we are going to get you a way to run trains, even if I have to drive out there with a layout tied to the top of the car!

Well morning comes early and I'm changing my sleep schedule so off to find a pillow.

Good news: liver function tests were stable, weight was stable, and she got to come home again Thumbs Up  Bad news: she fell trying to step up on a curb Thumbs Down.  No real damage done, except she was embarrassed .  We got her back on her feet.  After that, we were all good, but hurried home so she could get warmed up and rested again.

Continued prayers for SW!

Evening all

Prayers for Char and Wench for healing and for Rich in his interview.

Chief - The 870 is a really great shotgun.  I've had one for years and it is still my favorite shotgun.

Really cold out, 18 and talking of more snow tonight.  School was cancelled today with a few inches of the white stuff.  The kids and my bride had a good time.  Took the twins to basketball practice and helped out.  That was fun.

Going to put up a few more decorations inside tonight.  Hoping to put some lights up outside maybe this weekend.

MAy God bless

Been a busy day, washed 3 cars, cleaned and hosed down the patio.  Then started working on the Christmas Tree.  Don't know if its going to make it,  it is really wilted from the heat!  And, its artificial.  The ones at the "lots" are even worse, they look like ski poles.

Got to get going, need to go and water the lawn.

Later

I'll pass I rather have my gift.
