Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cold 20 degrees. Snow on the ground. Not getting much warmer today. If this is "Global Warming", then I hope to hell we never get " Global Cooling".

Today is a resting day. I think I overdid it a little yesterday. Knees ache and legs are stiff. I wish I could feel that good every day. Maybe soon.

Dining car was here for the usual breakfast.

Y'all have a great Wednesday.

LOL, Pat. Aloha all from a sunny Chicago where it is a brisk 6 degrees out which enlivened my walk to work. Went up to Fields yesterday to see if the Lionel Pennsy sets were on sale yet - they have many at $250 ea. Supposed to get 6-8 inches of Iowa snow later - thanks Jon. Congratulations to our other Jon on successful plumbing venture - and I love your layout video with the pages like a book. It really enhances the article. Gave my CTT with it to conductor friend on ride home. Nice chatting with Ole Timer, Charlie, Sir J and Brutus for a while there - then Messenger dropped me like a stone. Ray, congratulations on your article. I was just reading an ACL article in the latest Classic Trains. Doug, thanks for the heads-up about the socket wrench. I'll try it on James to get the side rod off so I can replace the traction tire. Bob, great musings on the end of the year. This year hopefully will be better for all of us.

Chiefie - I'm more of a blueberry or pumpkin muffin kinda guy.

Ole timer - I have a K-Line sawtooth factory on my layout.  It has a grey plastic sign with "RETRO MANUFACTURING" printed across the door.  What I want is to replace it (or stick a new sign over it) with a sign saying "FOOTER'S DYE WORKS".  Looking at some archival pics, this would have actually been painted on the bricks with white lettering on a black field with white trim.  I'll have to give it some more thought.

Google "The Gore Effect".

Jon Cool

I did, and got two impressions:

1) "The Gore Effect" stands for extreme winter weather.

2) "If nothing else, the Gore Effect proves that God has a sense of humor."

Ray, I don't belong, but one of the guys at work may.  I will ask him later this afternoon.  He has lived in the area forever and is also a conductor on the SAM short line.  He has a lot of memories of the ACL and other local RRs.  THis was a stop for the ACL passenger trains.

God BLess,

Dennis, thank you.  I got an Email this AM from the associate editor of the Lines South Magazine and he told me that they were going to send me a complimentary copy.

Doug, thank you for your comments.  The article was a labor of love which included memories of my grandmother when we rode those trains.

Chief, Congratulations on getting the RFD channel.  I have heard about the railroad videos on there.  We can't get it on our cable service but a friend of mine does on dish network I think.

Have a good day all,

Ray

Ole Timer - Do you use the "Sign Creator" soft ware? it is for road signs, but I have used it for large lighted John Deere signs, Purina signs, Etc. I didn't know about the sticker paper. A good idea.

Fifedog .... okay you think and figure it out .... these are being used to replace those run of the mill = all the same billboards too .... and many buildings/strucures had big advertisements on them . You take some wood and build some billboards too and replace the signs on them with some really neat ones . Even large signs were mounted on building roofs and on the outside walls ... gets rid of that same-ole same-ole look . I've got vintage thermometers too ... these guys put the stickers on card stock/white construction paper and gives them depth .... they are already 3-d printable . Makes the old time stores ... buildings ... billboards and bars look like they really did .... inside and out .

Just email me when you figure out what you want ....

PAT ..... no I downloaded all the original old signs I could find and use them . Many have the rusted areas look .... like they have been up a long time .... some don't . Mine are original vintage signs of al types . Lord I have 100's of them dateing from 1800's - 1950's .... products you never heard of ... now non existatant ... with really beautiful graphics and pics . The original ads and signs from the past . And you can scale them any size you want with your computer . Check ebay for the sticker paper .... alot lower priced than local stores .... they even have decal sheets to make decals for buildings and train cars with them . Some even print on thin white vinyl with peel off backing to make them more pliable too .... like bumper sticker sheets . An 8 1/2 x 11 sheet makes alot of them !

If your printer accepts white or other colors ... thin board/construction paper .... shiney one side ... matte the other ... like the dollar store sells for 3@ $1.00 ... you can cut it to 8x11 and print directly on it with great results .

Another fun day of cursing the organization. Oh well. Dennis, you're right about finding what's really important in life. It was good spending time w/ my 2 nephews and niece over Christmas. The pressures here at work probably haven't been doing my health matters any good. John and I have a plan to work within the limitations of the system and deal w/ the lack on mechanic issue (and the more important issue that we've been picking up all of it). The other part is not letting this place get to me so much. I guess that's the part about accepting the things I cannot change.

Well off to find some lunch and load up the dead compressor. Stay warm out there.

Evenin' All.

Jon, I forgot about last nite's game. Tried to watch the Fiesta Bowl this evening but they must be running it on a tape delay out here.Or the players & officials are moving at lite speed. As soon as a play is done the picture jumps to the team being lined up and ready for the next play. Confused

Regarding the billboards and building posters, I think it was Marty who did some really super work on his buildings on his layout.

Evening all

Staying warm?  It is about 30 degrees now.  They are predicting more snow overnight.  Ran the Polar Express for a while tonight with my Grandson.  As Laz says, no pile ups!

Going to try and get to bed early tonight.  Too many nights of 5 1/2 hours of sleep is catching up with me.

Good night and may God bless

Evening all,

Waiting for the arctic blast here. Next 2 days to be below freezing with lows in the low teens. Been over 10 years since that last happened.

Hope all are well.

Schools just closed here - snow storm coming and maybe 3 to 5 inches overnight around us.

Great news today - wife is pencilled in at the hospital for a week from this Friday!  That will start her chemo, then a week later she gets the transplant, and then 2 to 3 weeks before she can come home.  We need to get this done.  Doctor told the nurse that she needs to get in ASAP, waited long enough.

TARDIS is ready and every round is on ME tonight boys - let's go!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Evening.  Still cold.  Had big farmer guy come by with his son.  Want to buy a couple of farms [small ones Mom and I have in other county and not where she lives].  You got money, I sell.  Wish it was here in Wake Co.  Would be worth 10 times as much.  He was suppose to come at 7 PM.  Showed up at 5:30.  Made dinner late.  Then Pam and I watched TV for a while.  She hit the bed as she leaves at 5:30 each morning to beat the traffic.  She's home by 3:30.  Not me anymore.  Stay up late and sleep late.   Popcorn time [was on sale at gro along with Coke zero].  Had rattle in passenger side of dash of pickup for about a year.  Kept trying to get Pam to find what part.  She never could.  Frankie and I were going to the lake yesterday.  Asked him to find it.  Dad, it is the grill between the hood and the windshield rattling in the wind [on passenger's side].  Sure enough you could see it.  Used some of the windshield sealing tape [black sticky stuff I use on train cars and etc] and tighten the screw.  Rattle gone.  Funny.  Pam was fusing that I had made her 4 Runner rattle.  Got in it and saw a leaf stuck in the edge of the trim "clicking" against the windshield on the passenger's side.  Moral of the stories.  Don't let wifey try to find rattles in your vehicles.  Later

Bob, I have had too many opportunities that have made me reflect on priorities.  While they were very painful at the time, I think I am a better person for dealing with them.  Also helps me for the next set of challenges that come my way.
Ray, I tried to check with that guy at the hospital, but he called out today.  Next time I see him, I will ask.  I know you have a copy coming to you, but perhaps if we find that he is part of ACL group, you can have a contact.
Chief, love my wife to death, but know better when it comes to mechanical things.  I just don't ask.

Well, had a good day today.  I am on call, so went in late.  Was able to have a impromptu meeting with the Director and Producer of our next movie for a little lunch work session.  This should prove to be an exciting project.  I have been given a few tasks to handle as they are on the big side and require a fair amount of planning.  God must be in this as everything is falling into place.  Speak to the right people and things get done.  One of the things I am researching has to do with some special effects.  It is turning out to be most interesting.  Got the answers  I need, but still wanting to take things to the next level.  With regard to work, a couple of small cases and then I was done.  Came home and met with wife and kids after they returned from violin practice.  Off to one of our favorite restaurants for a nice steak sandwich.  Was tasty.

Better head to sleep.  Hope everyone has a great night.  Brutus, I will keep your bride and whole family in my prayers as when things like this occur, it affects the whole family and you all go through it together.

God Bless,
dennis

It is always good for me to be reminded about what's really important. Bride is out with her GFs so I got to run trains. Put a new traction tire on James - thanks Doug for helping me figure how to get the siderods off. He works much better 'uphill' now with the Express, though the tire works loose - maybe I can glue it or have it on 'backwards.'  I think his whistle is broken though. Tried him with other controllers and nothing worked, but they work for the other engines. Oh well, we'll just use the blow-into whistle for him.

Shifted the transformers around so that all of the engines with sound can have their whistles blown. Glued a figure into Percy so he's got an engineman where I can see him.  Got to thinking about 'planting' an old streamlined car as a diner.  The trucks are riveted in the frame so maybe I can hide 'em with foliage.

Going to cut the Thomas 'face' off a duplo block to decorate the 520. Turned him around so he'll  be working right-face forward - I've been driving him backwards all these years. LOL. Got one for the 248 too. I know it's sacrilege but not permanent and the kids like the faces. Roy, it's been sub-zero here since Dec. 29. Ugh. Supposed to snow overnight. I have to squire around  a potential worship pastor for our church tomorrow - looking forward to it... Prayers for Brutus' bride. Night all!

Cloudy and warmer today.  Actually got to 21 degrees.  Started snowing about 2pm, piled up about 3" worth by 5:30 when I went home.

My wife and I dinner with one of the lube vendor reps. I'm working with tonight. Pleasant time, until we got home.  My wife discovered she had lost her keys.  Searched the car, her purse, and called the restruant - no joy.  We figured she had dropped them in the resturant parking lot, soooo grab a flashlight & snow shovel and back to the resturant. By now, there is 4" of snow on the ground.  Shoveled out about 5 parking spaces around where our car was - no keys.  Back home, found the keys in our driveway.  Oh well, at least I got some excercise to work off the some of the dinner I had.

I won the bid on the Marx 666, so I'll have another e-bay refugee showing up soon to clean and tune.  Have to start thinking about a Lionel tender to pair it with now.

Bob - I know what you are talking about with your work.  I was having similar frustrations a few years back.  I had some vacation to use up, so my oldest son and I went camping for a week on the shore of Lake Michigan.  Used the time to think and re-evaluate what I was doing.  I've shuffled the time I spend in the plant a little to free up Saturdays, and have realized that some projects at work get done when they get done, 'cause there is only so much I can do in a day.  More comfortable now both at work and at home.  Keep cool, and as my dad used to say from time to time "don't let the b@#$%^&s get you down".

All for now.

Brutus, Great news Thumbs Up Thumbs Up  Angel to look after the Misses & her sister.

Doug, If your traction tire is anything like the ones I got for a K-Line GP38 don't worry about them being a bit loose rite now. After a little bit of run-time, without much of a load, it seemed like they tightened up and no longer moved around. With regards to James whistle, don't do as I do and start questioning my mechanical skills Banged Head, check the on/off switch. Whistling

One of the older kids, 11 I think, in our "Kid's Club" has made a lot of items to go with his Thomas stuff. He uses Troublesome trucks to make cabin cars(caboose), goods cars and some of the older two axle Lionel switchers to make additional diesels, not sure where he gets the faces but they turn out really nice. Maybe for SPF I'll rumage around and see if I can find some photos.

Finished taking down the outside decorations today, glad I got finished quickly. Ran out of sweet icedtea and no sunscreen. Smile,Wink, & Grin Whistling  Tomorrow the tree comes down and the last few indoor decorations that we forgot yeterday. Sad

I finished painting the castings for the Flyer 326 today.  I'll go through the parts Friday to double check what I need to order and what can be cleaned and reused.  The Christmas layout will likely come down this weekend.  After I finished with the 326 for the day, I decided to pull the Sega Genesis out and play some older games.  I played Kid Chamaleon and Streets of Rage, and quit both out of frustration.Smile  After 17 years, I'd forgotten how difficult they were.
