Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a cloudy 28 degrees. Going up to a cloudy 43, today, with a slight chance of sunshine, later.

Today is busy. Wife is grocery shopping. That means, she hates me, because I am not doing it. So, I will prepare for the worse. Maybe, I can warm this over. Pizza for supper ?

Dining car has arrived and we are having the usual for breakfast. I could go for a nice omlet, but this is not a good day to ask. So, I will shut up and eat my Cheerios.

Y'all have a great Thursday.

Chuck

hello ray, hope that your wife will be ok.  sorry about the bad weather.  when i was in the navy, we had a house in fontana.  i commuted to long beach every day.  all we got there was wind.  i wish i could get down on the floor and set up tracks, but see i cant walk and have not been out of bed for ten years.  i just recently through physical therepy was able to sit up on the side of the bed.  to make matters worse, ray, i cant close my right hand.  i have a wish that someday soon with help i could have a 4 by 8 train layout next to my bed with a simple layout with 042 curves and a few sidings.  that way i can run some trains.  i feel real lame that i have accumulated some cool trains, but cant run any of them.  hope you understand my situation.  i am not looking for sympathy but it is just a problem that i have to overcome. your friend navyjack

I have read with interest the back and forth (again) about computer problems, operating systems, software problems, and PC vs.MAC. Or was it Comcast versus Verizon versus DirecTV versus Dish Network?  I am one of those guys that usually buys the box with pre-loaded software, some additional software. and then just plugs it in the wall.

Working through issues is not something that comes as natural to me as others because it is not something I care to bone up on too much.  I leave that to others and do what I do best, whatever that is.  Yes, that can lead to some frustrations and inconveniences others don't have because they can work their way through them while I am on the phone with tech support or just take the box into my local nerd.

Brent has in my mind hit the nail on the head.  A hacker isn't interested in creating havoc among the minority.  That makes the PC the prime target.  And MAC does some things the PC doesn't......just not the things I want or need.  Each to his own, and THAT is what is important.

Certain operating systems have , do, and will continue to show their glaring deficiencies just because WE are the beta site and there is no NHTSA-like entity to hit a manufacturer in the wallet with a devastating and costly recall should the new product turn out to cause as many problems as it solves.  But customer dissatisfaction when you own the market by a huge margin is something that can be weathered, or so "management" thinks for the time being.

Sweeping statements about what is best is like me telling you Lionel RULES and the rest is for idiots.  It just isn't so.

And I am just one person whose observations are insignificant because my world is this:  the miniscule and irrelevant experience of one.  I belong to some auto forums, and if you read some of the stuff posters post in there, then look at a vehicle I am about to buy, you would say "Jack, why on earth are you buying that piece of junk?"

Well, it isn't junk....just because some have had unresolved issues.  Some of the risks I am willing to accept because  what I want out of the vehicle I can't get from the others.  It's like making the decision to marry a good looking person versus the Mensa poster child because we felt "Why not marry a good looking woman/man of average intelligence whose multiple attributes I will enjoy every single day rather than focus on those brains?"  If you want a more clear analogy, no one would buy a Corvette unless they were willing to put up with the shortcomings, regardless of the single price/performance advantage this vehicle brings to the table.

Personally?  I just bought a new box, PC, and had the local storefront guy build me one from scratch rather than hit Best Buy for the best price/performance combo.  It is because I choose to not be totally computer and software literate and self-sufficient, and he's my back up plan.  I bought no new software except for an auto backup one.  Why?  Because I have had so few problems over the past six years that the latest and greatest meant nothing to me.  This guy merely took ALL the stuff off the old box hard drive and loaded it in the new box.  XP and Windows ? and IE ? to name a couple of the installs.  Comcast's free McAfee.  Why?  Because they have worked for ME......and that tells me all I need to know.

So let's not get into a peeing contest over a stupid pc, MAC, or operating software.  One man's beauty queen is another's Mensa wizzard.  What works for you is all of the validation you need for your choice and everyone else can go live in their own shoes.

Jack.

Late Nite All !

A short respit tonite, had one heck of a storm rolled thru. Lots of thunder & lightening, for about 20 minutes or so we had rain like I have never seen before. It was even worse than Charlie when I was down in Fl, literally could not see the lights of the house across the street. Have to wait and see what happens the rest of the week.

8n, I seem to recall an article aways back, many decades back, about a VW with an engine out of a Porsche that was described as a Corvette Killer at the strip.

Jim, Prayers for Char & the rest of the family. Thumbs UpThumbs Up

Mostly cloudy and 50 today.  The stupid daffodills are starting to grow!

My #600 NW-2 now has lights.  Details on the other thread I started - no need to repeat them here. I'll post pictures in this week's SPF.

The directional part is not working yet, though.  I'm taking power for one headlight from one motor brush and power for the other headlight  from the other motor brush.  Thought I read somewhere that this would give directional headlights.  Might work for incandecent lights, but it is not working for the LED's.

Phillyreading - Cats don't steal just food.  Had friends over playing Fortress America once, cat jumps up on the table and makes off with an infantry unit!

One more Covair story - I met a guy at the Buick GS Nationals that solved his Corvair's handling ills.  He cut the floor out of it and mounted it on a Regal chassis and floor pan. Now it has a 455 in the front and runs the 1/4 in the low 11's and high 10's. Surprizingly, this works.  Turns out that the track and wheelbase of the last of the rear drive Monte Carlos, Regals and Cutlass is close enough to call the same as the Corvair.  I never realized that a Corvair was that big.  Says a lot about the size of the 'big' cars in the '60s and what we are driving today.

Prayers for health, weather safety, and job hunts.

Back home finally after a fairly long day. Was actually fairly nice on the mountain today. Was able to work w/ one of the other operators to pulled the troublesome windbird off the VATT telescope. Didn't think we'd be able to do that w/ the weather. Actually, I think the project got easier. This other operator (Sean) is willing to help out w/ some of the maintenance. Originally I was going to transfer to his shift, but I think what we did today will work better. When he is on days (once a month), I'll hang out on Wed. to work w/ him. Nobody has to put in extra time but me then. Gives me a good excuse to push for hiring the mechanic. And only once a month I can handle.

Brutus - tomorrow!? Will go by the church and light a candle tomorrow. Godspeed.

Brent - well said. Computers are like cars, use what you like and works for you.

Don and Ray - glad to hear you guys are hanging in there. If it gets too bad the 'scope should be high enough to stay out of the water. We could make a heck-of-a loop around the carousel for the Big Boy and the cab forward. O-27. 27 foot radius.

Ran the new trolley after I dropped off the truck. Decent detail for the price and I like the colors. The interior lights w/ the silhouettes look nice. Will be neat to see the trolley on the inner loop and the FA Amtrak setup on the outer loop in the dark. I find watching the trains very relaxing, even w/ just the single loop. You're right Chuck, this is good therapy.

Van gets moved in the morning and then will meet the guy w/ the tranny.

'Night all

Good night all.  Sat down after dinner and watched the end of the movie I had tried to watch for several nights.  Then started another one I had seen the first part of earlier and [you guessed it] reclinerized.  Tired.  Been getting up at daylight - 30 and coming in late.  Will sleep tomorrow AM and then drive east to Mom's.  Visit her and then to court house to get taxes straight.  Seems they have been over charging us on some of the farm land.  I'm sure they will pay us back the money. Whistling  If we owed them, they would expect it and interest.

Hope the CA folks stay above water.  Brutus, best to your wife and she is always in my prayers.  Rich, congrats.  SirJ, glad you made it without snow.  We did too.  In the 60's today.  Temps have dropped to the 40's and it has rained a little.  Chilly tomorrow [high 40's to 50] with rain.  Farther north into VA, rather chilly.  Pat might get some frozen precept.

Sleep tight and God bless.

Evening all, Day 3 survived.  Emptied rain gauge on patio, it had an accumulated 5" since Sunday evening.  That is the most I've ever dumped.  Draining pool twice daily, morning and evening so far been keeping up on that.  Water level in river chanel had white caps today, and got to top of street drain located on opposite bank.  Currently quiet out, suppose to be for awhile.  Could get 1 to 2 inches tonight, then suppose to be rather heavy tomorrow morning/early afternoon.  Then more Thursday night, Friday morning.  Clear on Sat, Sun, & Mon.  Then showers on Tuesday.  I think I'm begining to mold.

No damage or leaks in house or train room yet, did have a brief power failure, for about 45 minutes.  Biggest problem I had was delivering some  pkgs to USPS, and ended up in water up to my knees.  Minor issue.

Hope Jon, Doug, SJ, Kurt, and all the rest in the midwest do OK, going to be a bit nasty I'm afraid.  Never seen an El Nino have this much affect.

BTW, glad to see the breathern in Mass, had their act together.  That is really a BOLD political statement !!!  No disrespect meant but Teddy must be toss'n and turn'n !

Came home wife had huge pot of Stew, AND Chili made.  We will be eating good for awhile.

Got some projects to work on, see you all later.

Doug, how you doin down their?  There must be a lot of water surrounding the museum given the topography.  Get some pictures if you can.

Ray, glad to see your holdin your own up there !

submil Bob, must be getting hit with a lot of the storms by now

Brent,

Thanks for the reply to my email.  I now understand why the wireless card in my laptop seemed to fail after the upgrade.  Apparently, it was just a driver issue.  I bought a Belkin USB wireless adapter, so I am not concerned about the internal card.  Another thing that I like about 7 is how it makes online courses easier!Smile,Wink, & Grin

I still haven't finished taking the Christmas layout down.  Except for the 332AC, all the trains have either been stored or put back on the layout, so I am making some progress.  Classes started again today.Thumbs Down  The only things that will be tough will be an Automatic Controls class and my group's senior project that involves building a system to assist with taking inventory.

I'm not going to get into a long discussion about PCs vs MACs or Win98/XP/Vista/Win7 but I will say this. IF Apple had the market saturation that Windows has I can GUARANTEE there would be issues with viruses and the such that there are with Windows. It comes with the teritory of being the BMoC. I was running XP for over 4 years with ZERO issues caused by the OS. ALL of the issues I had we caused by criminals building software that caused problems. BTW, the PC I have that is connected to the home network that I don't use for surfing the web has NEVER had any issues running XP since XP was released.

As for Windows7... 3 months on this laptop ZERO issues. When I build/upgrade a PC I do not install OS upgrades they are clean installs. If you like MACs stick with MAC, if you like Linux stick with Linux. Unfortunately I can't afford a Unix Server so that isn't an option for me. Due to the nature of my work I need a PC, and quite frankly I wouldn't trade my PC for anything else.

SoapBox

BTW - I have had more problems with DirecTV than I have had with Microsoft.

Good evening all, been so busy today that this is the first chance I have had to get on the coffee pot.

Don, I hope this is the worst day for the rain.  Sounds like a lot more coming Thursday and Friday.  So far my pumps are keeping everything above water.  Pumped some more water out of pool tonight getting ready for overnight downpour.  Had a lot of wind with the rain around 4:30 PM.  Wind was forcing some water under the crack below my front room window.  Never saw that happen in the 34 years we have lived here.

No word on my neighbor today.  I guess the bad weather is keeping everyone indoors so have'nt seen the daughter outside.  I was gone all morning with my wife who had to have a CT scan at the local hospital as part of precaution to monitor a small growth in the abdomen.I'm not sure I am describing her condition correctly but she has to get it checked about every 6 months per her oncologist.  It has not changed any in the last year or so and that is good news.

It has rained all day here.  It sounds like it has just stopped for the first time today.  I noticed a gap on the radar but we will get more later tonight.

I'll check back with you guys in the morning.

Navy Jack, that was a good suggestion someone made about putting a loop on the floor.  Use Lionel Fastrack and it works good on carpets with built in roadbed.  I started with an HO floor layout about 45 years ago before they had sectional track.  I put three foot sections together on plywood pieces that were 4 inches wide by three ft. long.  Hooked it all together with bolts and wingnuts and it ran all the way around my living room at the time in an apartment.  It would be a lot easier today with Fastrack in O gauge.

Later,

Ray

Buckeye Riveter

It was a horrible ordeal.  I believe the back of my neck is sunburned. Oops I can’t believe people actually choose to live where it is that warm in the winter.  One positive item of note, no one offered me grits for breakfast.  I didn’t drink a drop of the sweet tea stuff either.   My lesson in alligator wrestling went smoothly until I had to get into the cage.  I almost bought a real flamingo for Fifedog, but I did not have an airlines approved flamingo carry on bag for its transport.  During my reconnaissance along the river,  I have came to the conclusion that the South has bigger boats than the North, however, their ports were often foreign.

THE REST OF THE STORY

What Buckeye says is true, but he didn't tell the whole story. He was "detained" until he agreed to make the following:

After he was released and across the Mason/Dixon line this happened:

Not sure how he was able to set the charge undetected, but bribery by Grits is suspected.

Good Afternoon.  One case this morning and then I had to deal with a sales rep for equipment.  Have to take the kids to violin practice tonight in just a short while.  Was so foggy out this morning, I had to do 25mph below the speed limit just to be safe.  Glad the trip is not that far.

Jack, I think many folks have dropped party affiliations and are voting by the individual.  I don't think either party can take for granted that people will vote for them just because they have a D or R after their name.  Regardless, it is good to see the process work.

Rich, congrats on Asst. Chief.  I only made it to Lt., but a career change made me turn my bars in for better lifestyle.  Still, the FD memories are strong and the friendships from there are stronger.  Of course most of the guys I worked with are either retired, or upper level officers.  Some have even begun to move south for retirement.  Taxes are more kind to the elderly here.

Brutus, yeah, I have read about those types of squibs, but I will also need impact scenes on vehicles, etc.  There are several ways to do it and I think we will employ a few for different scene requirements.  Certainly will want to not put explosives on an actor.  I will most likely share some of what we do here as I am sure some here will find it neat.

God Bless,
Dennis

On the run between meetings.  It amazes me that people will get in a meeting and out and out LIE.  Well, Yankee engineers that have moved South.  Whistling  Then wanted to argue with me that I did not know where a sewer line was in my town.  I witnessed the installation and knew all the easments.  Got to go to another meeting back in Raleigh.  Later.

Ever have a cat steal a piece of pepperoni from your slice of pizza? My wife did yesterday, our cat Chilley did that. A few days before that one of our other cats, Harley, stole a piece of fish from the cooking tray after coming out of the oven. Is there a cure for cat thieves? My cure is to put the cats in the other room a few minutes before we eat!!

We are above the clouds and it is nice and sunny. We got a few more inches of snow and a lot of winds. The plows are cleaning up know. At least we have good weather to get the shift change and one of the engineers up here today. The receiver is warm and we'll be opening it up later today.

Doug M - was going to make some comment about Linux, but you beat me to it w/ the Mac. We run the entire telescope on Linux.

Brutus - continued thoughts and prayers coming your way.

Don - No worries on the weather forecast. Take a break for the week, as I'm heading down today anyway. I actually thought about becoming a spotter for the NWS, especially w/ the job location up here. And they like people who are amateur radio operators. If I can ever find the time to take the test that is...

They made the rear suspension upgrade to the Corvair cars in '65. What really killed the Corvair? Ralph Nader didn't help, but cheap gasoline and cheap horsepower at the time pretty much did it in. Too bad, 'cause the next attempt at making an inexpensive and efficient car was the Pinto and the Vega!

Well a couple of projects I need to attend to w/ one of the other operators and then off for home. Should have a new trolley waiting for me as the result of a gift card from ChristmasBig Smile

 Good Morning!

Got the last of the Coffee Pot Interchange cars off yesterday!  (Ioway Jon).  Enjoyed the entire event and had the opportunity of having a lot of neat items coming through here!  Great Job, Fifey !!  Thanks !

Today IS the day!  The worst day of storms, we'll see!  My brother lives in Sacramento area and drives an oil reclamation truck up there.  The companys HQ is down here.  He is suppose to drive down and exchange trucks today/tomorrow.  Told him don't do it!  This is the suppose to be the worst day for weather in 30 years, wait a day or two.  But he has always marched to his own drum.  Maybe he will listen, told him to bring a warm sleeping bag with him, cause if he gets over the Grapevine, he certainly will not on his return trip tomorrow am.

West Coast Submillimeter Telescope Weather Report: (1.20.10)  Patchy light this morning, clouds blocking the sunlight.  Temperatures cool, should be getting warmer (a little) throughout warning.  Air quality is excellant, no particulate matter measured.  (Exception in Huntington Beach/Costa Mesa area, roof tiles and palm frawns flying around.)

(Bob, Since your up there on that hill, keep a casual eye this direction.  If you see a guy floating by holding on to a Cab Forward and Big Boy engine, toss me line.)

Cautionary Warning -- All Easterly Points --  As the entire West Coast is being drenched this stuff IS headed EAST, take available time and begin to prepare!  Could get nasty

(A lot of responsibility for being an Official Submillimeter Telescope Weather Reporter, might have to relinquish position, cant get the report out everyday.  Need help from Glendale and San Diego Areas!)

Buckeye....I was relieved to hear you managed your escape from the South and avoided Pat's torture techniques.  He had made careful preparations for the ultimate in torture. It is copied after waterboarding but uses cow urine instead.  Wink

With Scott Brown now casting the deciding vote on the National Health Care Bill, expect the President to now delay the vote and start working on compromises.

I am concerned that Scott Brown will not get the chance to vote on the Health Care Bill. I hear the Dems. are working on a way to delay seating him in the senate to allow a passing vote by the current senators.

Smilehello guys i think that it is figured out between my dr and nurse now.  i just have to calm down now and get my nhigh blood pressure treated.  it is cold here, about 25 and ice storm is expected tommorrow, great as lasy one we had a 14.5 hour power failure.  we almost froze to death.  stupid engineering, we have two fire places in our house and they are designed to use an electric updraft, so when there is a power failure(all electric house) nothing works.  wife cant even get car out of the garage.  i am buying a new cd player from a guy on ebay for our stereo system, and he did not send his street address.  i only pay with money order, so i cant send it to him until i hear from him.  i hope he answers my emails.  i am not sending a hundred plus money order to a town in tn without a street address.  i am glad the gentleman got the shay.  i bet it looks neat running.  anyone have any experience with the on30 bachmann one?  they are cool little trains and it would be nice to have a back-woodsey lumber or mining railroad interchange with a standard gauge rr.  take care guys navyjack

p.s. i do not have a layout to run my trains on i have not seen them run.  lame huh?

Good Morning

A nice january morning with sun, going to the 30s. To bad winter here could not be like this all the time. I think those blind people in DC are in for a bigger suprise come Nov. They just don't get it do they. I shall say no more for the pots sake.

A great chat with the guys last nite as Doug rode home on the train. I think we mixed in a little of everything but settled nothing.LOL....No plans for the day so maybe some train time.

Aloha all from a grey Chicago. Great late-train ride home with the guys. Congratulations to Rich on Asst Chf and prayers for the results of the interview. I don't think I've known anyone ever willingly moving to NJ... Today's Trib reports carp dna already in the lake. Don't know how that could happen. Hope they stop squabbling and stop it cold. Brent, what a saga (typed on my iMac) ;)
