Good Morning,

Around 53 this morning in south Florida, rained over the weekend, should get a little warmer by the next weekend. At least we are not freezing like last weekend.

Went to Disney's Animal Kingdom on sunday, and I was very tired afterwards, the animal kingdom is very nice but very large to walk. Drove back on monday, stayed with my wife's cousin from Georgia.

Saturday stopped by a train show in Stuart FL, before going to Orlando FL, bought a couple of things, now I have to install a new train signal that I bought.

Still don't know a delivery date for the Williams Platinum Clubcar for 2009. Been to the Bachmann site and all they will say is expected delivery is spring of 2010. Another reason against ordering from a catalog, catalog's are all wishbooks-wish they made it!!!!

Aloha from a greyish Chicago where I may be seeing the sun - only 27 but it feels warm. Prayers for your neighbor, Ray - and for Mrs. Brutus. Long day today with class tonight. Have some mags for conductor friend if he's working tonight. Sorted through the ones I kept last night - reread some articles by our very own Mike C. I dont keep many old mags anymore - usually turn them over to friends after a while - a legacy from the days I had about five years worth of Trains, MR, CTT and OGR. LOL.

Morning all.  Got County Commissioners and Town Board.  Suppose to be appointed to the County's Human Serives Board today.  Another meeting to attend.

Typed a post last night after Lucy woke me up from reclinerizing.  Hit post and site was down.

Jack, I watched part of Trains and Locomotives on RFD-TV [DVR'd] yesterday.  The first part was on the Rock Island Line.

Sunny and 60's again today.  Sure is nice and wish I could be fishing.

Hope the folks in CA are OK.  [If not, better swim]

Wifey suddenly had a headache this AM and did NOT go to work. Whistling Happend every day after a holiday. Laugh  Well, don't blame her.  Have as many years as she has with the State, why not?  Jsut messes with my routine.

Did get on shelf up in walk in closet and some Post War engines on it.  All cut and ready to install.  Since they are being mounted to plaster, I drill and use plastic anchors.  Easy part is now.  Put shelf up on wall, level and mark.  Then drill one, anchor, temp mount by partially putting in one screw and checking level.  Then drilling and anchoring the other brace.  Do each side and then put shelf on.  Then mount brace under back of shelf.  Stacking four shelves with one already installed at the bottom [had rifles and shotguns on it but now have safe for them].

Have a good one.

Good Mornin, Ya'll, From Snowy Taxachusetts,

What a difference the right set of tires makes on a car.  Even though I have always lived in in a snowy climate I don't buy winter tires, just an all season one.  Wife Princess Pam is always concerned about driving in the snow.  This time I selected an all season tire for her that was top ranked in light snow, moderate snow, heavy snow, and ice.  Bridgestone Potenza RE960 A/S.  I use TireRack.  Competitive pricing plus they have a great research function on their website to look into what you are getting into before buying.  Road tests and ratings by staff.  Side by side tire comparisons.  Buyer satisfaction rank, comments, and performance ratings.  The buyer surveys rate a tire in many categories (13?) and include miles driven and on what car!  You can even sort by the exact vehicle YOU drive, apples to apples.

Yesterday morning wifey set out for work in a bad snow storm.  When she got to work she called to report she got there safely and to comment on how sure footed the car was relative to others out there on the road.  "It's the tires I picked, Dear."  While others were slipping and sliding on the highway she had no issues, and she commented on the off road excursions some were taking, not by choice.  On the final long upgrade to her company's parking lot, many others could not make it up the hill while she motored on without a hitch.

While I was busy patting myself on the back and considered myself brilliant for doing all of the research and selection, and a hero (for the moment), my wife remained unimpressed and considers anything automotive to be MW (men's work).  She EXPECTS such decision-making out of me.  Banged Head

Later,

Jack

(Monday Evening)We survived Day 1, and of course the weather wasn't as bad as predicted.  But no complaining here, it it would have been that bad, would have needed an Ark.  We received a total of 1 1/2" since yesterday.

Between the weather and the holiday, only worked a half day.  I did talk with John F today, and what was he doing?  Bragging about the sunny weather in PA..  Did get to work on the pictures of the last Exchange car, it will be on its way today.

Here's a couple of pictures from the upstairs window of the back yard....

The first one was taken Saturday afternoon to establish a "base line".

Monday Morning about 8:00

Monday Evening About 4:00;  Significant drainage the water level dropped about 3 feet.

Tuesday Morning,

The channel is dry again, runoff contained.

West Coast Submillimeter Telescope Weather Report: (1.19.10)   Spurious rainfall throughout the day, soft most of the time, brief encounters of wind gusts, but not severe.  Significant cloud clearing in the late afternoon revealing clear skies.  Indications for cooler temperatures for Tuesday.  Reports of thunderstorms and additional rainfall in the afternoon.  Projections for Wednesday forward thru Friday are more severe.  Lack of sunshine in late evening hours resulted in darkness, which is currently begining to wain away due to sunrise.

Good morning all,

It is foggy in SE Indiana (so thick I could not see the Honda plant from I-74).  BTW, the fog refers to the weather, not to the contents of Hoosier's heads.  Not much sleep last night as the "saucy wench" was hacking and coughing all night long.  Told her to stay home from school today so she could get some rest.  Long day at work today.  Smooth ride on the Tardis last night.  Can always tell when one of the experienced crew is at the helm.  Lord help us all if the Chief ever tried to drive.  First thing he would do is try and put a Corvair engine in it.  TBIL anytime tonight.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Good Morning from Blueberryhill....

It is a gloomy 30 degrees. Going up to a gloomy 38 today with no sunshine, Yuk.

Today is an easy day. I have a few things to do and then I will venture down the stairs to the train room. The exercise on the steps is starting to show, A little achy, but it feels good.

Dining car has arrived for the usual breakfast.

Y'all have a great Tuesday.

Bob,

         I sent you a PM.

RT,

That window place sounds like the bodyshop that I took the PGT to to get an estimate on the bubbles above the drivers side door in July.  "We'll call you in a few weeks to get it in here".  As of the end of November, I decided to call them as I still had not heard back.  "I'll get you in asap".  Guess what?  I will be looking for another shop as soon as the weather improves.

Not much going on tonight.  I still haven't finished taking the Christmas layout down because I am not sure how I should store the 332.  The shelves are full, and I don't have a wrapper.

Almost sunny again, with temperatures in the 40's.  Just about all of the lawn is showing again.

Navyjack - my E7's are the recent Lionel release of the Texas Special passenger train.  They have the Legacy system so they have all of the bells and whistles.  I've had them about 2 years and am pretty happy with them.  I might poke around with the smoke units to see if I can get a bit more smoke, but that is really a minor thing.

OldTimer - nice score on the Shay.  A Shay is on my 'would be nice to have someday' list because they are so interesting mechanically.

No trains tonight.  Finished setting up the new washer and dryer.  Yup - needed a trip to the local Lowes for bits and pieces to get the dryer hooked up.

Sumbob - an aquaintance of mine in Michigan stuffed a 455 Toranado drive train in the back of a Corvair.  He even kept the back seat!  You sure you want to mess with those little air cooled engines?

All for now.

Prayers for your friend and his family, Ray.  Prayers for us all and our friends and family.

Tardis is ready and I'll use the wayback circuit.  Can't stay up late tonight and never got a nap today due to company - father-in-law and sister-in-law came into town.  She's the donor for my wife Smile

F-I-L and I talked trains for a couple hours and I gave him all my old issues of TRAINS magazine to read while they are in town.  Told him he can keep them if he wants.

PS Wes Laugh  Good buy man, that was a terrific price!

RIP Chewy - best dog I ever had.

Ray, instant grits is better than no grits at all.

Chief and Pat, think I'll give those instant grits a try.  I don't want to make a job out of cooking regular grits.

Well, we made it through the first day of the current monsoon weather.  Sump pump came through like a champ and my extra submersible pump kept the dressing room by the pool dry.  Got my PVC pipes anchored down now too.  I think we only got about two inches of rain all together from last night and today.  Seemed like more.  Rained pretty hard a couple of times and the new pump really earned its keep.  Water never even got close to my sandbags in front of the garage door.  Thank the Lord we had no power failures.  Forcast for Glendora is only l/2 inch tonight and l/4 inch tomorrow.  The larger amounts must be in the higher elevations above us.  Bet there is a lot of snow in the San Gabriel Mountains after today.

Got some sad news this afternoon.  My next door neighbor who I have known for 34 years has terminal cancer and took a turn for the worse today.  Daughter says he only has a few more days to live.  They have him on increasing doses of morphine and a hospice nurse is there a lot now.  I hope he is still conscious and I can see him before its too late.  I'll try tomorrow if its OK with his family.  He has been the best neighbor one could ask for.  His hobby was woodworking but he was always interested in how I was doing with the trains.  Great guy!  God bless him.

Laughhello pat, had a bad day, caregiver was sick, (projectile vomiting), dr did not show up to treat my high blood pressure, and nurse is on vacation.  my pt is suspended while my high blood pressure is being treated.  i try in spite of all this to keep a stiff upper lip.  i am from chicago, but believe it or not, we have had grits here since i was a kid.  my dad used to take me to work with him and we would have grits and eggs.  my wife(asian) of 40 years makes us grits with breakfast all the time(they eat it in the philippines also.  typically we have eggs, grits, sliced tomatoes, and whole hog sausage for breakfast.  it gives me lots of energy for my pt.  see i have not walked for ten years.  you guys are great thanks jack(chicago yankee all the way), likes folks from the south though.

Good evening all,

It was cool and cloudy in SE Indiana.  Day was spent at funeral.  Workout tonight was semi-good with 3 10 touches and 10 minute 40 second mile on the treadmill.  RT, we had a larger version of the foosball table, but it was too heavy for the amount of use it got.  Glad to hear of other "lost" item stories.  Navyjack, thanks for the update on your location.  Brutus, glad to have you back on board the Tardis.  TBIL, and we can pick up Dennis W. to verify Don B's neighbor's "condition".  Patrick, not to alarm, but my uncle had a "snip and tuck" once and a few years later had my last cousin on my dad's side on the family.  I hope everyone has a good day.

Keep on training,

Using the "cow and the flat rock" analogy the cow is currently on break for a refill. In the midst of the downpour I just happened to think of something, isn't tomorrow the start of the Jacksonn-Barrett auctions. Hope all them sweet collectable cars don't get washed away or damaged. Az is very prone  to having some really horrendous flash floods.

P.S. The cow will be proud to know that even though I cleaned the gutters yesterday, spotless, they still couldn't handle all that water off the roof.

well very disappointing day today had appointment with a company to come out and give me estimate for new windows. Guess who didn't show. So I called them and told then that i had a 2 PM appointment with one of there salesman and he never even called so if thats how they do business don't bother in fact don't call back as I'm now moving on to the next company an this basically was a done deal i was approved for the loan all I needed was an estimate to have the windows put in. No chief this wasn't some Yankee company it actually was a southern company right out of Wilkesboro, N.C. If they would of called and said couldn't make it I would of been happy but no call or anything don't cut it.

Well didn't really get anything done today as expecting the above to show up so hung around and didn't do anything.

Ray, instant grits is better than no grits at all.

Dish Network is the way to go.  Installed HD free and does it look sharp on the HD TV's.  Got more channels and the folks [so far] are more polite than Direct TV.  Well pleased.

Now to do some work in the train room before going to Rex Hospital and doing some video footage on Mended Hearts Inc [and organization on heart healthy which is mostly made up of folks with past or present heart conditions].

BTW:  Watched Sunday's John Deere show on RFD-TV.  4 farmers in Ohizo talking to a dealership salesman in a restaurant in Ohizo.  Pat probably caught this too.  3 farmers and the salesman are sitting around a table talking while drinking ice tea.  1 farmer has what looks like Mountain Dew or something simular.  ICE TEA!!!!!  I'm sure it was sweeten as no sugar was on the table. Wink Guess we could call it the OFFICIAL DRINK of JOHN DEERE. Whistling

Later.

Instant Grits is the way to go. Cooks faster, tastes as good as regular Grits, and you have more time to enjoy them.

I have dish network --- perfectly happy with them.

I saw the John Deere show. Here are the official glasses for sweet ice tea --

Dennis,

I never thought about it looking like an Alco. LOL.  I pulled the smoke unit apart, and the element and wick appear to be the only parts that were damaged, but I still have to check the components on the board.  If they are okay, I'll install a cooler element and see what happens.  I am just glad I was right there when it started and that it didn't roll over.

Good morning all,  I'm hanging on here with the rain.  Just had light rain all night and this morning but heavy stuff predicted for later today.  Pumped some water out of the pool this AM getting ready for later.  Sandbags are in place to protect garage door and extra submersible pump is set up to turn on when needed to pump out dressing room next to pool.

Don, unfortunately my driveway slopes toward my garage door however, I have a rain gutter covered with grates in front of the door to catch run off.  The water runs around the side of the garage and accumulates in the rear. I only get a problem if for any reason I can't get rid of that water in the rear, it will eventualy back up to the front of the garage and then enter under the car door.  I have only been flooded twice and that was before I got a sump pump in the rear and once when we had a power failure and the pump stopped.  This is the first time I have tried sandbagging the garage door.  I hope that works in case of a power failure.  No grits today!  Had microwave pancakes , soft boiled eggs and coffee.  Still no word from Chief about the instant grits.  He probably likes the full strength kind, whatever they are.

RockIsland52 Jack,  I have never brought any trains in the house because of flood danger.  Most of my trains are on top of a 42 inch high layout or on shelves.  If the water reached that point the whole town would be under water.

Just had to go outside to fix PVC extension pipes I added to the sum pump.  I did not glue them together yet so they got blown apart a couple of times.  Will do that next time the rain stops.  Not a real problem anyway.  The extension is to keep from dumping in neighbors back yard but the natural slope of the land takes the rainwater over there anyhow.

Will report back later,

Ray

What a chatty bunch this is...So much hot air coming from the north, you would think they couldn't have snow on the ground!  Just kidding.  Wife and kids are out playing with some friends as they are all off for MLK.  Not much planned, but I do hope to get up and work on the layout a little.  Watching the post documentary on Easy Company 506th at the end of Band of Brothers.  Amazing these guys who did so much as ordinary Americans.

At church last night, they mentioned that Southern Baptist convention has a 100% terminal usage of donations for disaster relief.  No money is used for administrative costs as that has already been absorbed by the membership.  Also, 90% of all meals from the Red Cross are prepared in SBC kitchens.  I'm not telling folks where to donate, or even to donate, but if you are so moved, there are some credible organizations out there.

Jim, sorry to hear about the trouble with your 2020.  Hope you decide to keep it, even if you have to make a project engine.  I am sure you will find a way to make her run like a top and blow smoke out like crazy.  From your description, it sounds like an old Alco diesel blowing flames out of the stack.

Glad you are back to hold off the Yankee invasion.  We still have that one intruder, but since you have a good mark on him, he will be observed and stopped at the border before bringing any contraband out of the south.

God Bless,
Dennis

BAck from the lake house.  Wifey wanted to come back early so no fishing [water a foot below the top of the ramp and 60's today.  Then got important Town meeting for the next two days while it is to remain in the 60's.  So stuck here instead of at the lake fishing. Banged HeadSoapBox].  Read through the Pot posts and usual Yankee BS.  Pat, great job of holding off the Yanks while I was gone.  Now to go check the pond and see if beavers have been at work.  Later.

Navyjack,

               Sign - Welcome

I had a bit of excitement while running the modified 2020 last night.  I noticed that it had slowed considerably, so I pushed the ZW handle all the way forward.  Little did I know that the slowdown was caused by the element in the smoke unit shorting and I was greeted by a large flame coming out of the stack.  I picked it up and got it into the kitchen sink immediately.  Aside from the crispy smoke unit and loss of hair on the back of my hand, no other damage was done.  I am not sure what to do with this 2020 at this point, because I don't want it if I have to revert back to the smoke bulb.  I have several options right now: get another fan driven unit, install 671S conversion kit that Lionel made in 1947, part out, or sell whole.  I am not sure what I should do.
