I'm back. It was a good five days with the 10 year old...but coooold and a bit rainy. We were 50 miles s. of Lake Superior. He went swimming when it was 50 degrees out! Missed you all.

Well it rained. After all the warnings [flash flood before it even rained] and watches, it rained an inch and that is it. Now we have to keep an eye on Charley. Needed the inch of rain so that was good. This thing blocked another Trogan Horse attempt. Looked like the same IPL as yesterday. HUMMM.

Howdy Buckeye. You are right about no telling what a sound will result from different shells and etc [on the Lionel Sounds post]. Did not want to get into that conversation. Sounded like someone had already made up their mind. I put a Lionel horn sound card and speaker in a shell yesterday. Sounded good before I put the shell on. Inside the shell, it sounds like a squeek. Need to move the speaker and drill some tiny sound holes in the shell. A new project to work on. [:)]

Chief, sometimes removal of a window or a porthole will help with the sound. Also thery are small baffle cups that the speakers can be put in that helps.

In about 2 hours going to the Pentagon for job interview. TOday's casual dress day but I'm in a suit & tie & uncomfortable too. Rather be playing w/BB in the mud. Think my co-workers will suspect something? Will be an "extended" lunch.

If I get a job there, I'd like to build a miniature riding railroad around all those corridors.

Yes, Buckeye, the ore trains are running - Chinese demand for ore is driving it - though paradoxically, the paper said the miners (who have just been called back) are planning a strike. Unlike last year, the Escanaba yard is full of CN power - mostly MP15AC-type switchers - instead of anything lettered for WC. Interestingly, all the spots where the ore cars had been stored last year are empty.

Rain and more rain. Slept late with the rain coming down. Youngest's birthday. Her new husband called me and wanted to know what WE were doing for her birthday. Good Morning Everyone!

Yesterday we celebrated my 18th birthday. Actually, I don't turn 18 until Aug. 26, but school starts on the 25th, which wrecks it. Plus, we're going on a camping trip on Monday and will be gone until Sunday, Aug. 22. So, who am I to complain? Train-related gifts I received were a Marx Glendale station, which I'm currently rearranging the layout to accomadate, a Marx battery-operated set, a Beckh (German) clockwork engine and tender and a mint boxed Haji (Japanese) set. Got some nice non-train stuff too. Feels kind of weird to be 18 now.

Weather here beautiful 70 degrees. Much better than the last 2 summers with 90s every day. Nice sprinkles on Saturday, remnant of Charlie.

Interview went well on Friday. Helps that the interviewer was my Marine Corps buddy.

Will know later this week if get job in Pentagon. Within the next week or 2 I'll try to post pictures of my 78 inch crossover. There are just 2 sets of points left to make and I haven't been working on it at all of late. Writing project.

Watched The General yesterday evening. If you like trains, you ought to see this adventure. It's silent but a full orchestra plays in the background.

In Okinawa, we used to get 3 to 5 typhoons a year, some as bad as Charley. None of houses blew away, tho, because they use cinder block, steel and concrete.

Some of the trailers in FLorida look like time bombs waiting to explode; designed under codes 40 years old. Also, used to wonder why old folks would move to FLorida where it's so hot. Answer: air conditioning. Some of those seniors were and possibly still are, sweating it out down there.

Tough situation in FL., a nephew in the Orlando area just moved to a bigger place and had 8 trees down on his property but no home damage. I know that trailer's serve as an option for limited funds owners but there's no way in the world they should be allowed. It's not a matter of "if" it's going to be a disaster with those things, it's a matter of "when", one would hope that the mobile home park owners would have shelter's for their folks. Lot's of our friends have been buying property in Florida (yup, we are almost at that age also) and it's tempting for us, just to get away from frozen tundra in the winter would be nice. However, I can go downstairs and flip on the gas fireplace and have it up to 80 in a hour, go to the beer fridge and the bathroom is only another 10 feet away! Life is good.

Stopped raining here. Sun is out. Went from deficit to plus for year to date. Saw some motor homes in a park in FL that were over on their sides or completely destroyed. They are not having fun. Thx for the congrats. Contract work for the Army. It's not your father's military. First, uniformed jobs went civilianized to GS and SEC. Now federal workers are becoming contract workers. A total metamorphisis.

The job entails running the 3rd most popular gov't website in the world after the IRS and one other one: The U.S. Army's homepage.

Entails daily looking for photos and images, editing them, and giving instructions to the technical gurus. Fairly intense job with not as much goof-off time as now.

Kinda ironic. Jarhead operating the Army site.

Can't blame people for moving there, the property values are still extremely good in some areas. The cost of living there sure beats the H*** out of SoCal. We have family in the Daytona area, they only had some landscape damage not to the house. [:D]
