PETim,

Someday when we have a lot of time, I will relate our disaster family vacation to Yellowstone, the blown manifold gasket on a fairly new Ford Windstar, the closed Ford dealer in Jackson, sending my family home via air from Salt Lake City (3 round trips between SLC/Jackson, Idaho Falls), the nice Ford repair folks in Idaho Falls, the parts that came from San Francisco (closest place for Windstar parts), my pleasant 3 day stay at the Best Western on the Snake River in Idaho Falls ($59 a night!), my attempt to just sell the van in Idaho Falls (ha-ha, this is snow and hunting country and the comment from the Ford dealer that there are only 3 Windstars in IF and the smallest vehicle on the lot is an F250), the failed attempt to ship the broke van back to TX (up to 30 days, $2000, contents cannot stay in van and must be shipped separately - another $500), driving back to Texas by myself, selling the van at CarMax (priceless).

Someday when we have the time.....so have I been to Idaho? [8D]

Good Morning All,

NE Ohio is cold at 12 deg. Last night we had another snow event, it ranged from 2” to 12” depending on where you lived.

Buckeye – I see another Ohioan has joined the forum.

Chief – better take care of the pneumonia.

PI Tim – I have t agree with Buckeye, your safe.

Scratch, I agree. The golf courses should be open by now. I went fishing last weekend by wading the creek for trout.

BTW, Spanky are you getting the trains dressed up for St. Patricks Day?

Hello all - it's just me - siberianmo, sitting back in the corner (back against the wall, as always) taking in the talk ........ Hope all is well with you.

Today is a big day around here. My Lionel "Polar Express" train set is supposed to be delivered in early afternoon. I'm going to construct a shelf railroad for it to run on - in small portion of my HO "Can-Am" trainroom. This will be a run of about 20 ft by 5 ft and will have a background of the night sky with snow falling (sort of like the movie poster). I haven't had a Lionel train of my own since I left for the service in 1956! It's amazaing how excited I feel about this ........ crazy!

Yesterday, I received 32 MRR binders for my many decades of magazines that have been out of sight within drawers of my metal file cabinets. They have been sitting in cardboard boxes within the drawers - separated out by years, but really inaccessible in a sense. Now that my trainroom is a real trainroom - time to get those magazines out and available. Unfortuantely, as excited as I am about this too - my arthritic fingers aren't!

Well - don't mind me - I'll just fill my cup (decaf, please) and sit around for a bit .......

Good morning all!

siberianmo - I am interested in how well those binders work. How many "zines" can one comfortably hold? What keeps the "zines" from drooping on the wire that holds them. How convenient are the binders to use after you have them set up. I have all the CTT issues that I would like to store differently than I do now.

Chief - be careful and do not end up with "walking pneumonia." Nasty stuff.

50s and cloudy here again today. This is one of those scarce N Texas winters where we do not see much of the sun for 2 months.

Have agreat day all!
Roy

Cold today but sunny - i spent the morning taking down the crib and putting up a real bed in the 2 yr olds' room with the help of all the kids as a 'surprise' for my wife. I'm working at home today...Hope my wife approves. She did say she wanted to do this, didn't she?

Roy:

Didn't know what a "zine" was until I "met" you! But now that I do, I can tell you they work fine (better than my arthritic fingers ......)

Let me try to explain the way these binders are made:

The Kalmbach people have colored the binders to blend with their RR magazine color schemes. Since MRR is largely blue - the binder is blue. They are sturdy with a pebbled surface and easily accommodate 12 issues of MRR. When you go back 30-40 years, they will hold even more as those 50 cent issues were hardly as thick as the ones of recent decades.

Anyway - if you open up the binder and have it lay on a flat surface (both covers flat out) you will see metal strips running along the top and bottom edges of the binders in a perpendicular arrangement with the binder spine. The "zines" are fitted into metal slots and they easily hold two magazines per slot. Of course the "zines" are placed along the center fold of the magazine before placement into the binder. Following this?

I've only put together 5 so far and they "work" just fine. The magazines stay upright and are easy to page through.

If you are planning a large purchase, my advice is to communciate with Kalmbach first. I got a "deal" on the 32 I ordered - a better price than advertised for 5 or more. So, if you are talking about decades of magazines, this may be worth your while.

Hope this helps.

For anyone "listening":

Oh yeah - remember how excited I was about the arrival of my Lionel "Polar Express" train set? Well, as the bumper sticker so aptly says - "--IT Happens!" I had ordered a bunch of extra FasTrack to go with the set in order to make my 20 ft x 5 ft shelf railroad. The track arrived today and the train set comes Monday! Go figure!! All shipped UPS with one tracking number - but somehow separated. Bummmmmmmmer.

Gotta run ........

Thought you guys might be interested in this. When we started the pain in the butt job of scraping our beloved popcorn ceiling it left a lot of dust everywhere, even with the rooms sealed. My wife bought a couple of those air cleaners from Sharper Image, needless to say I chuckled for several hours with that. Surprisingly they seemed to work well. But the best benefit is I stuck one in the train room and boy does that thing pick up a lot of garbage in there. It must be the oil vapors or fumes that the trains create even if you don't run with smoke, but how can you run a steamer without smoke. No sales pitch and I'm not on commission but they work for me. Hey Doug,

One of my neighbors scraped that popcorn junk off his ceiling by spraying it lighly with water from one of those old handheld bug poison pump sprayers. Made it easier to remove and cut the dust down significantly.

Roy, We did that also. That helped with removal and some dust suppression but the sanding was the killer. If I never do that again it will be to soon. [censored]

Doug,

Did you ever try the "wet" joint smoothing method using a stiff/flat sponge (available at Home Depot)? Works pretty well. Then I did fine sanding as last steps only. You are right - the dust is horrible.

Roy:

Yes, providing your are talking about the "average" size of a Kalmbach RR magazine. For example, if you have the Spring issue of Classic Trains - then you would be able to get 14 of those within one binder. It would be a tight fit - but it would work. The binders are really designed for 12.

The "Saga of the Polar Express," by siberianmo (aka: really ticked off ........)

Okay - let me see if this makes sense. I ordered the set on Jan 27th - it was supposedly going to be shipped ASAP on a first come, first served basis. I can live with that. InternetTrains has been good with past orders, so I figured this would be an okay experience.

Ha - double ha! I'll bet everyone has gone through this "goat-(you pick the 4-letter word)" before. Never fails to amaze me how just when you think it is safe to go back in the water - SHARK!!! Or something like that ......

UPS delivered just the track this morning - left it on my front porch and zipped away before I could get the door opened. My first thought was, "Ommigosh, you forgot the other box!" Then I checked the shipping label - "Item 1 of 1," it states. Hmmmmmm. Then I checked the invoice within the box - all items ordered were supposedly shipped under one order/tracking number. Hmmmmmmm. Then I checked the UPS web site and ran the tracking number. "Two boxes were delivered to you ........" it said. Hmmmmmmm. Then I checked the "details" box - "One box was delivered to you ....." it said! A contradiction - to say the least. Hmmmmmmm. Then I checked the "new tracking number" box and it said - "your order has been split and you are scheduled for a Monday, Mar 7th delivery ......." Arggggggggh.

InternetTrains said, "We decided to "drop ship" your order to save shipping costs (which of course I paid for - I haven't seen the savings!!!!!). Am I boring anyone - if so, sorry.

Just a sec - gotta take a "hit" from my Jack Daniels - - - - - - - there, I feel a bit better!

I won't go on and on, but this stuff really jerks my chain. I don't like warm beer, detest wet toilet paper and promises made that aren't kept really tick me off!!

See ya tomorrow.

Hey folks, at the Escondido craft store that sells trains ran into a returning newbie. Gave him the website, hope to see him here. Doug in SD told him about you, hopefully he posts.

Also got two sharper image air filters after the fires. Made a huge difference in my allergies. They almost don't exist. I got the ones that take out the bacteria as well as dust. Also got one for my Dad. His works great and he is breathing well. Wouldn't trade them even for a cab forward.

Hope all the north easterners are doing ok. I will be posting a picture that is unbelievable tomorrow.

Hope the ill get better, and the rest have fun.

Supposed to be 40 today - hah. But it's sunny. Wow, Tom, an inspiring picture today - When I saw this - it gave me the idea to try running some trains in 'opposite' directions - in other words, I have one main line - and two long sidings - each split into 2 electrical 'zones' so I can park my 4 complete trains - but they all run out heading the same way - it looks like fun if I tried to run some the other way.
