Mornin All,
Well it looks as if the rain is finally gone,[:D][:D][:D], and it is supposed to be slowly warming up to the 80's by the end of the week. I guess that means I don't have any more excuses to not start the yard work, wonder if my logging permit has been approved so I can pull some of those weeds. [(-D] Now that the worst is over we shouldn't see any real rain til next november, but that also means we will probably have one [censored] of a fire season.
Chief, Did you get any real good Crab Cakes while you were in Baltimore? When we go to Daytona to visit family there is a place that is #1 on our dine out list, love them Crab cakes. [dinner]
Well time to go refill the coffee cup. [^]

Hello all!

Laz and John, I will be at York in April. We arrive Wed and are leaving Mon (in and out of Baltimore). I am going to help a friend with some booth duty while there. Let me know if you guys are thinking of coming. We'll have to meet up somewhere.

Spring break this week. My son and I are going to drive to Dillon, Colorado to do some skiing (Copper Mountain or Breckenridge). We are leaving after noon tomorrow and plan to return late Fri or early Sat. Weather looks to be good this week and they have lots of snow after recent storms.

Chief - glad to see that you may be getting better.

Have a great day all!
Roy

Roy & Laz, I probably jumped the gun on York. Ed & I were thinking of next year. Big trips I plan for after I get my income tax back & did that this year already, so we're thinking down the road. Allentown may be possible this fall, though, We hope! Thanks guys, planning way ahead will insure we get there sometime.

A wonderful 50 degree day here - 'course I haven't seen much of it -setting up and cleaning up at the hotel where we had church services. I'm going to take Ben, the 2 yr. old over to the park to swing on the swing - he has his priorities right and wants to go play trains in the basement instead. ;)

ROY,
I will let you know in April. I will probably go on Saturday as of right now. Are you working the table for a dealer or just a member?

Al,

Looks like Thomas the Tank engine on steroids

chief,

Here's the North Carolina engineering exam

1.  Calculate the smallest limb diameter on a persimmon tree that will support a 10-pound possum.

2.  Which of these cars will rust out the quickest when placed on blocks in your front yard?  A '65 Ford Fairlane, a '69 Chevrolet Chevelle or a '64 Pontiac GTO.

3.  If your uncle builds a still which operates at a capacity of 20 gallons of shine produced per hour, how many car radiators are required to condense the product?

4.  A woodcutter has a chainsaw which operates at 2700 RPM.  The density of the pine trees in the plot to be harvested is 470 per acre.  The plot is 2.3 acres in size.  The average tree diameter is 14 inches.  How many Budweisers will be drunk before the trees are cut down?

5.  If every old refrigerator in the state vented a charge of R-12 simultaneously, what would be the percentage decrease in the ozone layer?

6.  A front porch is constructed of 2x8 pine on 24-inch centers with a field rock foundation.  The span is 8 feet and the porch length is 16 feet.  The porch floor is 1-inch rough sawn pine.  When the porch collapses, how many hound dogs will be killed?

7.  A man owns a Tennessee house and 3.7 acres of land in a hollow with an average slope of 15%.  The man has five children.  Can each of his grown children place a mobile home on the man's land and still have enough property for their electric appliances to sit out front?

8.  A 2-ton truck is overloaded and proceeding 900 yards down a steep slope on a secondary road at 45 MPH.  The brakes fail.  Given average traffic conditions on secondary roads, what is the probability that it will strike a vehicle with a muffler?

9.  A coal mine operates a NFPA Class 1, Division 2 Hazardous Area.  The mine employs 120 miners per shift.  A gas warning is issued at the beginning of the 3rd shift.  How many cartons of unfiltered Camels will be smoked during the shift?

10.  At a reduction in the gene pool variability rate of 7.5% per generation, how long will it take a town which has been bypassed by the interstate to breed a country-western singer?

Good Morning,

"What a difference a day makes" (feel free to sing along) 74 warm degrees yesterday with thunder, lightning and small hail in the night and now this morning it's 38. You gotta love spring weather. Ran into the owner of my favorite hobby store (Hobby Haven in Des Moines) yesterday at the ice cream shop and he said I have some things that came in while we were gone, I can remember one but not the other, kind of like Christmas in March!

The train room sure looked inviting when we got back, need to go and clean track this morning. It's amazing how quickly dust accumulates.

Have a good one.

Morning all. Good to be home. US Airways is really in trouble. After I signed off of here yesterday AM, went to print my boarding passes, message, your reservations are confirmed but change in flight status, call or visit ticket agent. Well, whole flight was canceled due to aircraft maintenance. Poor planning. Anyway, I called and ended up with better flights than before. Got home earlier. Off to Dr. this AM. Have a good one and God bless. OH, sunny and real warm here [Texas is getting "wetted" for Roy's siding with the Yanks [;)]].

Warm this morning - thunder storms and hail last night. But due to drop to 16 (!) later tonight. Ugh. Got to the High Rail show in Palatine, IL yesterday; not much in our scale but trains and trains - huge large scale and Lego setups. A nice postwar layout on a low -table for kids to play with me. - push a button for the gateman or crosslights sort of thing. I am collecting old earth-colored towels from our rag bags to cut up for another mountain.

Scratch,

Looks like a nice recreation of the Montparnasse wreck in Paris in 1865.

http://www.answers.com/main/ntquery;jsessionid=a9pjpoet2p2q?tname=train-wreck&hl=montparnasse&sbid=lc03b

There are some nice classic train stations in Paris.

Laz - I believe we will be in the Orange Hall (we were in the Purple Hall last Oct). I am helping a dealer friend.

Ski trip may be off. Son twisted his leg in the soccer game Sat and it has gotten really stiff on him today.

Have a great day all!

That picture looks like a recreation (from a different angle) of a famous photograph of a French engine that crashed through the wall of a station in the same fashion.

Now arriving on track number one, The Polar Express! UPS delivered my return to Lionel at about 12:30 PM CST. Now, considering that I left for the service on Sep 18, 1956, which was perhaps the last recollection I have of my Lionel trains - this is a significant moment.

I must admit that there was "that" degree of excitement in opening the shipping carton - and then the very well appointed Lionel train set box. That familiar orange color - the Lionel logo - it all came back - in a flash! Amazing, simply amazing.

The quality of workmanship shows and shows well. The 2-8-4 Berkshire is really well done and quite heavy; all metal. The rest of the train is plastic - but I'm pleased, very much so. My guess is that the lighter weight of the tender and illuminated passenger cars will be a plus - less stress and strain, etc. Love looking at that loco - those green jewels and headlight just reminds me of so many, many hours in a life a long time ago .........

The only out of the box problem encountered was with the tender. The rear pickup roller had come loose and shorted out the transformer, thereby making me wonder why the train wouldn't start. Took about a nanosecond to figure it out - the sparks helped!

The train had its inaugural run on our dining room table - where else? The oval of track measures out at about 59 inches by 39 inches. The train, tender and three passenger cars takes up just about half of the track. Nevertheless - it runs! And it runs well! And it smokes! And it whistles! And I'm a kid again!

So, tomorrow I begin construction of my shelf railroad, with the additional FasTrack that I bought which will increase the overall size to 20 feet by 5 feet. That should make it a decent trip for all to enjoy.

My HO train room will never be quite the same now that the Polar Express, by Lionel has arrived! But there's always room for one more, as the saying goes.

Gotta go run the train (again) .......

P.S. This will be posted on several sites - forgive the "ignorance," but I really don't want to type this over and over ....... I've got a train to run!

siberianmo, Hmmmm. With all the excitement over the Polar Express I wonder if in the future the HO will end up on the shelf layout and more "O" will become the primary layout.

dougdagrump: Nevah as in never, no way, no, nope and absolutely not!
My Can-Am HO layout is what I had hoped to achieve during many a night away from home during my 32-year military career. Now I have it - and it ain't leaving.

The Lionel train brings back so many great childhood thoughts - but it is really for my five grandkids - but I get the fun of building the shelf system.

Nice try!
