HOWDY,

Don B, glad you had a great day

RT, know how you feel, went through the same thing in the spring, waiting for the test and results can be upsetting. Valium the size of a quarter seems to help but don't do it.

RI52, some neighbors do water, but when I looked at my water bill (some years back)and then looked at the grass I decided its just grass and will turn green again when it rains. so I wait.

My wife was home today so we did some grocery shopping and had almond chicken for a late lunch. that will be my food for the day except for banilla with the gang tonite. No trains yet today but there's still time......S.J.

TGIF

CHIEF.....What kind of one horse town are you operating down there in NC?  If you have a street problem you are to call the Town Administrator, who then calls the Service Director, who then calls the Town's Engineer, who then calls the Head of Transportation, who then calls the Head of Ground Transportation, who then calls the Head of Streets and Roads, who then calls the Head of Pavement, who tells a summer intern to go out and take a few photos.  You sure have a lot to learn as Mayor.

Did Don ever get the birthday presents we sent him?  He has forgotten to mention it on the forum.

Doug.....If for some reason I flew to Chicago, how far from Midway is the Illinois Railroad Museum?

88...Why is Susieq upset?  I only see one thing less than ideal with her life. Laugh [(-D]

Wife is dragging me to Cincinnati tomorrow to see the new Garden Railroad Layout.

Why is there a red dot after the word "Message" as I type this reply????

My OTTS certificate is back?  Yesterday it wasn't there.

Hi Buckeye,

The Illinois Railroad Museum is in Union Illinois.  I'd put a drive from Midway Airport (5700 South Cicero Avenue, Chicago) to Union at about 60 miles, which is about 5 miles or so directly West of DougM.

If you were to rent a car and drive it, the distance may seem short enough; but the traffic, depending on the time of day, could make it a 1.5-2 hour drive.  Doug probably has a better handle on the best route to avoid a traffic snarl, perhaps a back road route.  The expressways can get pretty bottled up, depending on what is under construction at the time.

Boy, was it fun out there today - quiet, hot, but fun. Rode Chicago Surface Lines 1342. Tried to spy out Thomas who arrived early. Photos later.

Buckeye, Jack is right. It takes me 2+ hours to get to Midway. O'Hare is closer. So add a half-hour to that -- 2 and a half-hours at the fastest.  C'mon out. Or rather... fly into Midway, take the Orange line downtown, Metra out to Crystal Lake and we'll go together.

RT,

If I can do it, so can you. My doc scared the****out of me a few years back. I followed his advice and ended up dropping 100 pounds in about 18 months! What's more, I've kept it off for the past 3 years.

With a little imagination, you can find stuff to eat that will replace what you shouldn't eat. Send me a PM or e-mail if you want any ideas. GOOD LUCK!

Back from Hershey... quite hot today...

They have a small zoo at Hershey Park and they have two black bears in the enclosure... both were pacing. SusieQ states 'Now I know why I like bears. They are impatient!'

Jack - seems we BOTH have spouses with demeanors that resemble bears! Shock [:O]

Buckeye - she is taking hormone suplements to aide in child rearing. Wink [;)] She's been in rare form lately!

While at Hershey Park today we were on the Lightening Racer (wooden roller coaster where the two trains race), we were in front of two young (12 - 14) girls who screamed the whole time. SusieQ says to me as we are exiting the ride, 'I hope they don't do that during procreation.' Shock [:O] See what I'm dealing with? Confused [%-)]

Evening all!

Doug:  Great looking family.  Looks like everyone had a great time!  The Alco in the back looks pretty nice too!

Took the girls to the water park today...1-1/2 yo fell and went under about 8-times, just walking, and falling...got up laughing every time.  Went to wave pool where the waves were breaking, 3-yo scared, 1-1/2 yo laughing histerically...me holding onto both of them trying not to let go of either.  Work, work, work....

Lets see, where do I start???

Doug M, wife too pretty for an old guy like you.  Great photos.

MIDWAY airport.  Someone is flying Southtrash.  The Trailways of the skyways. Disapprove [V]

88, I figured that was what was going on with Susie Queen.  Of course those Queens [two Pams and one Susie] can be rather spoiled.  Think Rock will agree.

Glad Shake and Bake had a good birthday.

Another day of Town stuff and then mowed grass.  That good rain really made it grow.

Off to bed.  Got to get up early and pick garden to take to Miss Edna's.  Then another meal at MIL's as Pam's oldest nephew is getting married.  The "white trash" one [sorry for the slang] that I told the story about Pam's middle sister and her kids.  Seems he has met this girl, she has got him going to Church and out of his drugs and laziness.  Gotten his old job back as he is passing drug tests.  Maybe he will turn into something.  Well, big party tomorrow evening to meet her parents and etc.

Good night all.  Sleep tight and don't let the bed bugs bite.

Rock, you are welcome to come any time and have grits, country ham, redeye gravy, scrambled eggs and biscuits.

Good news about Pam's nephew. Sometimes they can come around. (Yeah, Chief's right - my bride's too good for me. Just don't tell her.) Waiting up for the boy to come back from Chicago. Kurt, that gas turbine was in beautiful shape - newly painted. It's always hard to believe the size of the stored steamers - N&W 2050 was 113 ft. long. A C&O and MILW 2-8-4s I think were more than 110 ft long.

DougM.....great family photos, and everyone was smiling (just after ice cream or wifey read your life insurance payoff, I presume)!  At least you get included in some of the family pictures. I am always the one behind the camera lens, and years from now no one will know who I was.  Re Buckeye's question, is the Illinois Train Museum open year round?  I found out someone bought my old house in Chicago off Peterson Avenue, bulldozed it, and started over. Disapprove [V]  Seems like everyone wants the short commute into the Loop and wants to jam a 2,000 square foot house on a 2,000 square foot lot.

Mel....your train adventure had me thinking about my folks and how my Dad's "bucket" list included a ride on the "Orient Express," the "Blue Train" in South Africa, and one whose name I can't recall....which has a Northern and a Southern (Winter) route from Seattle to Chicago.  Got the latter two in, not sure about the former.

Chief....I didn't see snausages on your menu.  Thought with Lucy you'd have some of those on hand to serve with breakfast. Dinner [dinner]Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]  BTW, has she chewed up the remotes, your eyeglasses, or your slippers yet? Laugh [(-D]  Regarding your comment about the three "Queens", these sound like lighthearted comments to others, but we know better. Whistling [:-^]  My wife likes to be regarded as Princess Pam, kind of like a female Darth Vader. Wink [;)]  That's encouraging news on the family front, have patience.

RT.....you've conquered the career, house selling, house buying, and relocation challenges thus far in 2008, with 5 months to spare.  A "slight" diet adjustment and you've hit the quinella (sp?).  For us arms length observers, that's like Sylvester Stallone releasing 5 of his 6 Rocky movies in one year.  Or 6 if you sneak in the new layout by Christmas  Go for it! Thumbs Up [tup]

Brent....level the playing field and try some of the supplements yourself.  Short of that, for the time being may I suggest a suit of armor or kevlar?  And with regard to the bear subthread, next is hibernation.  The UCLA marching Band could be practicing in my bedroom at 3AM and my wife wouldn't hear them.  But if the visiting granddaughter sniffles in the middle of the night across the hallway with all the doors closed, she hears that.  "Jack, wake up, quick!  Go check!" Disapprove [V]

Happy Saturday Morning !!

Greetings from the hot and humid, North Fork of Long Island.

We are in the peak of the summer tourist season, and one area where we see the effects of high gas prices is all time high ridership on our 2 car LIRR scoot trains. These trains run as scoots to and from Ronkonkoma where you change to/from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station electric trains. On Fridays, an extra train runs from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, and yesterday it was SRO until our local station, Southold, 1 stop from the end of the line in Greenport. This section of track is also "dark", and is controlled by manual block train orders.

On the South Fork (aka The Hamptons) "The Cannonball", that runs Fridays year round has been operating with 12 cars and a diesel on both ends, this train also carries The Cannonball drumhead on both engines making this train unique to say the least.

As I remind people we are lucky to have transportation options, as east end businesses are enjoying a good season so far.

Finally had some time yesterday to get into the train barn, and I discovered some feathered freinds found a way in. So after re-framing a window, and replacing some cedar shakes, AND cleaning up
what the birds left behind, we are go to go. The exhaust fan I had installed in the barn makes it comfortable even on the hotest day.

Off to a Golf Outing today, for charity, then a swim in LI Sound.

Actually our waters here, ocean, sound and bays have been very warm this year, as in mid-70's.

Frankly I like it in the 60's, never liked what I call "Florida Water".

Vacation on LI, why of course, after all we have passenger train service, how many other beach areas can claim this today???

yes there are a few, but not that many......

off to fry playing golf.

Forum acting funny today. Letting me post whilst asking me to login again. Jack, the IRM is open every day Summer, weekends in Fall and late Spring. Closed in Winter though if you ask, you can sometimes follow a volunteer.

Morning All !  Weekend off !  What to do?????

Got some chores, so think will start there, need to reinstall a instant Hot Water unit in the kitchen.  The old one 4 yrs, was leaking due to corrosion.  The new one has a Stainless Steel tank.  What is ironic is the leak was obvious at the connector, but they have new quick connectors and are not replaceable!!  Had to buy a new one.  Then have some spider webs to eliminate.

Need to get Chris' computer in for repair.  I think the hd died.  A friend of mine has a  program called Spin Right.  It takes a long time but analyizes each sector reestablishes a park position than reorganizes all the files to the new location.  Allegedly will revive  4 out of 5 drives.

Then will see about working on the layout.  Need to extend the sidings in the Engine yard about 3" to allow for a track bumper.  Of course will need to extend the surface for the additional track.  Going to put a light in each one as a power on indicator.  THEN, if I get that down want to add a 6' siding on the mainline.  I've got the switches and track, just a matter of reconfiguring.  Will help for simulated operations.

Doug the pictures at Union are really great.  Looks like you guys had a good time, I imagine it was crowded there as well.  Isn't there a place called Little Norway, or something like that nearby?  Imagine it would have been a point of interest for your son.  Glad to hear that the "runaway" situation is all worked out, they sure are short lived, huh!  But, comical!!  Good luck with all the football demands, some of the coaches get a little carried away with it all here.  Lord knows what would happen if you had to miss Hell Week.  Good Luck!!!

Waiting for pictures of Lucy and Berg.  Someone so proficient with a camera should be able to accomodate that.

Sphish - Belated but sincere congratulations on the Anniversary.  How time flies.

Buckeye - Talking to family members they had watched a documenatry on the Mackinaw Bridge in MI., told them I knew the guy that built it.

Havn't hear much from Roy recently, he must really be busy.  The construction has got to be near completion, maybe Mitch needs to go down on a weekend and get it under control.

BTW Chief, did you ever find that road in Roseyville?  I didn't know that you all repaired them, I thought you just drove across the lawns or yards as desired.

Received my York registration in the mail yesterday, If anyone needs one I will be glad to send this one to you.  Simply, write the check and send it in, I will have it all filled out, no problem.

Don, it was actually fairly quiet at the museum - a typical weekday. They were also scrambling for volunteers. They usually run an electric unit fairly continuously around the trolley loop but our driver was also serving as dispatcher for some yard moves - using of all things, a tiny diesel unit that looked like one the #41 Lionel engine. The Illinois Terminal interurban scheduled to run wasn't working correctly so they used 3142. They're gearing up for Thomas' visit in two weeks. Supposedly have 10K visitors, but at $18 a head vs. the $20 we spent for all three of us and 3 Cokes, I'm not sure I'll take the youngest.

The Little Switzerland or Norway is a few hours north of us in Wisconsin. Union is only 15-20 minutes west of me.

Good Morning All

Kind of a late start this morning but all going well. Had BL& garden T's for breakfest. Doing the laundry, but with two of us not a big deal. Doug, good pictures, thanks. I was talking with Brutus via e-mail last nite when a storm kind of eased its way in, not bad and didn't last long enough to help with the watering. Anyway had to drop our conversation and close..I'm not sure what today will bring but I  think I can get in some train time. Have a good weekend and don't forget to cut the grass...S.J.

Good morning all, Went to orthopaedic doctor yesterday for follow up on busitis problem with knee.  We both agreed that I had enough therapy for a while.  I'll try it on my own with excercise at home.  Ran some trains this morning on the layout.  This is the best time I can get in my garage during this hot weather.  Tried running yesterday afternoon and came out covered with sweat.  Dip in pool fixed that though.  I have been running a solid train of PS4 Lionel flatcars with trailers powered by an A-B-A MTH Black Widow F unit set.  These are nice cars and roll easy.  The early trailers on these cars fit through my old Lionel Bascule bridge well because the platforms on the cars are lower than some other flat cars. Ray, What about one of those portable A/C units ? Would one of those work as far as making the garage a "bit" more livable while running some trains ?

Good day at the museum yesterday, no crashes.

Got another Atlas GP15 coming, will have Chessie #1508 & 1520 to run together. Gotta say I love the BIG diesels and steamers but it is becoming such a pain to pack them and haul them back and forth to run at the museum that I have decided to stay with the smaller units.

Now if the willpower is strong enuff to standup to temptation. Sigh [sigh]

Doug, Very nice pictures of the family and the trains.

Dougdagrump, The Atlas SW-8/9s are nice little diesels, I've got two of them and they run and sound great.  Also have two of their GP-9s and a pair of the RSD-7/15s.  All of these are on the smaller side compared to the huge modern stuff.

Wife and I worked in the garden/lawn this morning trying to catch up with a couple of weeks of neglect. Looks a little better. Trimmed three carts full from around and in the pond.

It started to rain a little and we quit. Rain didn't amount to much, but it has been cloudy and thundering all afternoon without much rain to show for it so far.

Then worked on the dollhouse project for a couple of hours this afternoon, staining logs, what a pain.

No train work today, but I do want to get back to working on the catenary soon, as I would like to have it completed when the E-44 shows up from MTH.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. Supposed to be a nice day here tomorrow.
