Wow! The new pot has really been busy. Been away too long! 12 pages already - took a while to catch up.
Happy New Year everyone - even though I'm 4 days late. Finally got all the Christmas decorations down and put away. Except for the outside stuff. Been too cold and windy here past few days. Highs have only been in the low 30's and lows in the teens. Finally got up to about 43 today with the promise of 50's on Saturday. My garden pond is frozen over with some pretty icicles on the waterfall. My garage is about 40 - 45 degrees and too cold for trains right now. Will probably crank up the heater out there soon - having withdrawal!!!
Belated wishes Laz. Are you going thru withdrawal with deer season being over? Think my husband is.... Oh well, a week of turkey hunting will be here soon.
Dewey - good to see you post - I had been wondering if you stayed up in the high country after Christmas. Been checking out the high country Web-cams. Looks really cold up there!
Chief - thanks so much for the award!! - don't think I deserve it though - been pretty delinquent of late.

Happy New Year. This years resolution....a finished attic ( for the future layout ) no matter if "she who must be obeyed" thinks any other room in the house has priority. Get back to me this December and see if dreams really do come true.
Nick. Great looking table...but if all you have is a Pennsylvania Flyer set I think you over did it a little Excellent touch with the sliding drawers for the controls too!
Greg. I'd really be surprised if any of us older 3 railers hasn't somehow been involved with American Flyer at some time in their lives. American Flyer was my introduction to model railroading when I was 10 years old. It was the most memorable Xmas gift of my life. I have a feeling it's only a matter of time until I find myself owning some again, even though I need more diversity in this hobby like I need a hole in the head. Still, when I see some of the familiar old S gauge stuff on swap meet tables the temptation is pretty intense.

One thing I have not tried is replacing the brushes. I am wondering if oil soaked brushes could be the cause. Maybe as the brush warms up, the oil thins and the resistance of the brush drops, causing the motor to speed up? I don't run the North Coast Limited much due to this issue. It is my favorite passenger set though.

I am not that knowledgeable about all of the mechanics, but it certainly sounds like a possibility. I have a 490-492 pair that are original, and I am still looking for the 900 series cars to match. Most of my collecting energies are directed toward Pre War O gauge. But there are lots of things that can draw my attention

Lisa...Another suggestion for your passenger cars. Send them all to me for testing. In about a year we can determine if your roofs are removable.

Up early, about an hour since it sounded like the the Rockettes were dancing on the roof. But so far mostly a wind thing down here, sounds like Don may be getting quite a soaking.
Had a really busy day at the museum yesterday, even chatted with some folks visiting from Mich. out visiting grandkids and their kid as well. Crashed and burned early last nite, out like a light B4 ten pm.
Today is funeral day, our neighbor's dad passed away and he is having a very difficult time with it. They were both gearheads and extremely close. His mom seems to doing ok, my better half and I will be helping with some of the food for the reception afterwards. If the weather doesn't get really ugly should be a big turnout for services.

Morning all. Wow, seems like an old family reunion. Got Dewey guarding the mountain entrance, Lisa guarding the central part and I have the edge of the Piedmont through the Coastal Plain. Got Raleightrainfan as backup. Northwoods, good job of posting the picture. Take that old train to a good repair shop and give it a tune up [you posted you are not sure of the mechanics]. Bet it will run like new. Secret, see if you can watch the guy as he cleans, replaces [probably brushes] and lubes. Then you will know how. Sure good to see all the extra posters on the forum and in the "Pot". See some that have been registered for several years now appearing and helping out. The more the "heads" the better the idea and solutions. Love to read new ideas.

Garden seeds in our Lowes now. Need to buy up some and get then started in greenhouse. They way they may keep us from watering garden this summer. Low water in lake. Problem is, the new water plant is not ready and 4 lakes full of water. We suffer for their poor planning.

Hope to find time to adjust Fortner Yard today. Percy and Thomas derailing too often on the inadvertently elevated curves. I think I will take out a dog-bone on the inner circle and just extend the yard tracks into that space.

I clean the track and then apply a few drops of Wahl hair clipper oil and let the engine and cars run across it to spread the oil. When the train stops further down the track, another few well placed drops of oil and pretty soon a thin coating of conductive oil allows smooth running. It also does wonders for my z-gauge as well.

I ordered the University of Virginia and Purdue University box cars from my LHS in Jacksonville, FL when they first came out in the catalog. His supplier never filled the order. I spent nearly an hour on the phone calling Hobby Shops all over the country. Got the UVA and Lenny Dean Box cars withot too much trouble but everyone said good luck finding the Purdue box car. Next to last call was to Caboose Hobbies in Denver. He said he didn't have it but try Mizell Trains. That was the last call I made. The man left me on the phone, checked the inventory, found one and I ordered it. I may be doing more business with Mizell Trains before it is all over.

Before doing a bunch of track rearranging check the location where they like to derail. I had a small upper level loop and no matter what I tried Percy had a little hippity-hop in two places, appears I bent or loosened the track enuff during assembly to change the radius of the inside rail and poor Percy had a tuff time with it.

Attn."flyers" a brite boy and a cardboard nail file on tender wheels and track, always a drop of oil in the right places,and a few drops of rail zip. Off they went,running their little pistons off. the third eng. is #283. Thanks for your suggestions I combined them all and got results.I did buy the Royal Blue but the other things I got when buying all of someones trains. I do miss super smoke flyer smell but no one around here sells it and the co. wants to much for s/h to suit me. Thanks Again,,,,,,,Sir James

It is a good day here. Had Grits for breakfast at Waffle House with the family. Spent the rest of the day shopping, then honey dos that have finished the Christmas decor around this place. Have some seed to plant too.....a Shrek Chia Pet!
It was great to talk with the Chief today. Always good to chat with a true Southern Gentleman. Anyway, looking forward to our next meeting of the Southern Guard in Prattville.
