Now that will give you some visability...maybe the guys at GE should have thought of that when they designed those P42's. lol

That makes me think of the dinky town one of my sisters live in, in waaayyy rural western S.D.  She wanted a new front door for her house.  So, she simply drove the 50 miles into *town* and bought one.  After she got it home, she called the local Baptist minister, who is also the town's only 'carpenter'.  He did a whole lot of measuring, and determined that he would have to make the opening bigger.  He then went home, got his chainsaw, and proceeded to enlarge the opening!Shock [:O]

Okay, I hope there's no character limit, because I've got a long list.

See that's what I hate about joining these things so late.  I miss half of the stuff.

The original locomotive that started this topic actually doesn't look half bad.  I kind of like it.

Yes, the BNSF Green Goat is ugly.

Whoever painted ATSF 520 needs glasses, big time.

I agree with Murphy Siding.  The C-Liners are very elegant locomotives, though I don't think the paint scheme matters.

The Dash-9 is not an ugly locomotive.  It's very nice.

Camelbacks aren't too bad.  I thought they looked rather interesting.  Weird, yes, but interesting.

That Krauss-Maffei locomotive looks SO COOL!!!!

Penn Central loco..............no comment...........

Yes, that BQ23-7 looks horrific, but I think overall it's a very nice looking locomotive, so I don't see what's wrong with it.

Again, awesome pic of a Dash-9.

That Amtrak-looking RS just needs to be cleaned.  Amtrak's scheme never looked better on a locomotive.

I would KILL to see a Crandall Cab in person.

Patches do kill the locomotive.

Yeah, the American paint scheme is a little overkill.

Again, awesome Dash-9.

I just feel sorry for SP 2534.  That's my vote for ugliest.

Idk what that electric locomotive is that they tried making for Conrail, but that is not pretty.

M-10000.....meh, it's okay.

As for the SD70M, all I can say is "Well there's your problem."

I'm amazed that someone would call the ALCO C-855 ugly.  That is one of the most beautiful locomotives on the face of the planet, and I'd kill to see one.

U50C, same thing.  Beautiful.

I dunno what's up with that White Pass locomotive either.

The DRS6-6-1500 slug is indeed ugly as sin.

The P42 Genesis units are absolutely gorgeous locomotives.

And as for the GP-9, exactly what nose are you referring to that they chopped?lol

I'm shocked that the ALCO T-6 isn't on this list.  That has to be the ugliest brute known to mankind.  I mean, come on.

Is that not ugly? (not my pic, btw)

Also, the GP40FH.

Kind of good-looking, kind of ugly.  It's right in the middle. (again, not my pic)

To me it takes more than an ugly paint job to make an ugly Loco, and with a couple of exceptions I don't find most of the posted locos ugly at all! These are, but their mums will love them...

My favorite little shortline with a very ugly locomotive.

Vulcan locomotive works  65 tonner

1 of 10 built for the US Army during WW2.Just think of a GE unit with westinghouse guts.

Re: CP/StLH 5447, this unit wasn't scrapped, it was repainted (possibly also rebuilt), and is now FURX 3012.  A little more history on this unit, it was originally CNW 6910, one of the "Falcon Service" locomotives, who spent a night in the Mississippi River after a derailment!  NRE eventually acquired it, cleaned 'er up, but only applied that nasty-lookin' brown primer before it went to CP.  BTW, CP 5447 looked worse than StL&H 5447, since the CP marks were just spray-painted on!!! Shock [:O]

Can anyone beat that ugly boat...

I disagree, I think the H12s, even without the styling common to earlier H-switchers, were rather elegant creatures.  Dip black paint doesn't do much for it, though.  I wish the number was indicative of its location though... (read: ZIP code!)

and CSX paint schemes didn't help it one bit.

I actually kinda like the BQs, though I do think they are kinda ugly...  A bad paint job doesn't help, nor did the conversion to B units... Disapprove [V]

Thanks.  But yeah, my vote is for SP 2534 or whatever that sad-looking shell of a SP locomotive was.

Funny you should mention this. In the early 70's when CP Rail had concentrated most of the FM's out in BC people did flock from miles around to phototgraph them. There still is one waiting to be restored out in Calgary. CP keeps it, maybe kept because it's been a while since I was out there as part of their historic collection at the Ogden shops. There have been persistant rumours about a rebuilding to operational status. anyone heard anything of it Question [?]

Of course. Surprised I never thought of that...installing the wide Wootten firebox so that the anthracite that was so abundant in the Northeast could be used as fuel, just silly. Moving the engineer's cab further up the boiler so that he would have better forward visibility, just silly. Never mind the fact that these "silly" Atlantics, Ten-wheelers and other wheel arrangements of Camelbacks were the bread and butter of a lot of Northeastern railroads and set some remarkable speed and other performance records. A practical locomotive certainly would be beauty to the railroad owners and bean counters.

Beauty and ugliness are so subjective. I prefer not to have an opinion.  A locomotive that does not work is ugly.
