Not a fan of that ugly locomotive at all.  Most 'spartan' cab locos are equally as 'hesslich' (for you non-German speakers out there 'Ugly!') but I'm going to have to come down on the side of the Wide Nose.  Better for the crew comfort and safety-wise plus it looks more modern, at least to me.  Color of the paint on the loco doesn't matter, much.

Yeah...that Krauss-Moffei (I think thats how it's spelt) engine is pretty freaking fugly, but the other one is a ALCo RS27 and they're suppose to be ugly. Most all ALCo's are ugly...thats why I like them! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Someone's gotta love the ugly ducklings. Big Smile [:D]

Those Alco RS27 are ugly as sin. How many did they made? Are they still in the roster?

UP m-10000.I'm pretty sure this was ugly by 1930's standards.

There are only 2 RS27's in remaining, and they are both operateing on the Minnesota Commerical RR in the Twin Cities. Last time I checked. Hopefully they are healthy and insulting people with their horriable looks. Wink [;)]

Now I 'm a big Alco fan but these were one off's made for UP.Just think of 2 c-424's spliced togehter.More of a test bed locomotive,UP quickly realized that this locomotive design was not for them and they lasted less than 10 years in service.

Alco C-855or

The combination of a shortend nose and liftrings,it gives the appearance of a pig snout

Ugly they may be, but I still think one C855 should have been saved. Disapprove [V]

I would cast my vote for either the U50/U50C or a DL500C (World Locomotive) leading with the cab in the flat end (not an uncommon practice in Oz).
The daily commute is part of everyday life but I get two rides a day out of it. Paul

I don't think they could do anything. Remember that episode where they just bought the kid a new car cause it was so bad...they would probably just buy them a new locomotive because its "beyond help". lol

I don't know....they arn't the best looking one ever forsure, but I don't think they deserve to be on this list. From what I  know though crews hate them.

I've heard that they favor the f40 for its cab heater a.k.a. "foot rest."

Crews hate these units because of poor visibility from the cab, also I've heard that the brakes aren't very responsive which makes smooth stops at station platforms difficult. Maybe thats why VIA Rail hasn't ordered anymore and instead is going to remanufacture it's F40PH-2s.

What about Amtrak? Did they order any units?

I think the new guy did the chopping while the regular guy went to lunch.
