man are you insane? the UP olympic units are 2 of UP's coolest locomotives ever. The blue looks great on them! If you want an ugly UP locomotive, try an SD60M or almost anything that doesnt have a flag...er i guess those are moreso boring than ugly

If you think thats look good?????????

Yes, I've actually seen this along with the 2001, pulling the Olympic torch train through Mesa, AZ back in 2002.  It was pretty spectacular.

It's a BQ23-7.  I'm pretty sure only about 17 were made, I could be wrong.  It's basically a variation of the B23-7.
And yet Bachmann produced an HO version of this engine.  But not a normal one.

I miss Conrail too, but the original scheme, not the Conrail Quality stuff.

I like both the conrail quality, and normal scheme.

Why dont you like the quality scheme?

Tjsingle

Didn't really like the extra writing and big "Q" symbol.  Plus the name of the railroad wasn't Conrail Quality.  Not that Conrail didn't have anything to be proud of, they accomplished a lot from what they had to start with, and of course is gone way too soon.  But I thought advertising it on the locomotives was a bit obnoxious.  That being said, I would give anything to still see them rather than what we have now.

A lot of people call the EMD BL2 the "Ugly Duckling" of diesel locos.

UNFAIR!!  Anything that hasn't seen regular maintenance for a while is going to look pretty bad.  Here's the same model (not the same loco) when in service:  http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=354240

Nononono Awesome!, you got it wrong. It is one of the most beautifull first generation diesel loco's! I am surprised that it still exists. Many Thumbs Up [tup]Thumbs Up [tup],

They may not have been the best looking but they pulled real well.

The BL2 beats them all (except for the Euro stuff) in my book.

Foreign locos are weird, but to them they must seem pretty normal.  They don't have the same things as us to judge them by.  A lot of them look like alternate, albeit often smaller, versions of our models.

Either being rebuilt or reached the end of the line.  Hopefully not the latter but judging by where it's parked not looking too good.

you copied the wrong thing from photobucket..you need the image URL..

it should always start with http and (almost always) end with jpg. like this:

http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u45/scottychaos/FGLK/1751-large.jpg

(that is NOT an ugly locomotve! ;)

you copied and pasted "yourdirectlinkfromphotobucket"..which is not an image link.

and you also have the IMG tag at the end wrong, take out i1238 in: [i1238/img]

This lash-up may not be ugly but it's definitely different:  http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=240403&nseq=2

It's an interesting lash-up of North American and export designs, there's even a slug in there!

That is a unit with a lot of history, needs a little TLC though.

Are you serious?  I love UP 1996!  Second only to 1995.lol

I agree with you, the 1996 paint scheme rocks.

Also, that was kind of the point of that paint scheme.  They meant to meld the Black Widow and Daylight paint schemes.  I think they did a fine job of blending the two.

Besides any Australian, European, Japanese or Chinese locomotives, including the "Bullet Noses" and anything used on high-speed passenger trains, I'd say my top picks for "ugliest" locomotives would be the GE BQ23-7, EMD GM6C, GE U50C, FM H12-44, ALCO C855, GE P42DC, any rebuilt ATSF boxcab, GE CV40-9i, and the new Gensets/Green Ghoats, plus some more that I cannot think of at this time. (I agree with almost every locomotive mentioned in this thread except for the Dash 9, or any "normal" locomotives, like an SD40-2 or SD70M in a special paint scheme).

The worst paint schemes, I think, are the L&N Grey/Yellow/Red, the leaser Grey Ghost paint, most UP colors, the Warbonnet (alot of people hate me for this), anything with Zebra stripes, the CSX Dark Future and BNSF Heritage III. There are quite a few more, but I don't want to list them all. The best looking paint schemes in my opinion are - the KCS Southern Belle, CSX AC6000CW paint scheme, all UP Heritage Units (except the 'Bush' unit), the UP United Way unit, every Canadian Pacific unit and anything with a similar scheme to the DRGW speed lettering.

The best looking locomotive in my opinion are - the GE widecabs (except for the C44-9WL locomotives),  the GE C40-8 or C40-9 narrow noses, EMD widecabs with 'American Safety Cabs' and not this modern boxy cab, the EMD SD40-2, the EMD SD70 (spartan cab) and the EMD F40PH (although they may appear a bit too boxy if in the wrong paint scheme, like FLNX 418 which is painted in Irish green).

Enjoy!
