Stopped at UWOSH this afternoon on the way back from the family farm to drop a couple of odds and ends for Matt.  Not many students in sight, but stepped out of the car just in time to hear loud cheering from the open windows of the dorms.

Quick little question: does you local town now have quiet zones for train crossings? Here in Sacramento, CA they've done major upgrades to the crossings on the former Western Pacific (now Union Pacific) tracks that run between 19th and 21st Streets through downtown, which has allowed UP to no longer need to sound the horn before going through every grade crossing.

We'll address then to you both, Jim and Shirl....Don't want to slight anyone.

Agree, other folks bring up thoughts of a few years past and bingo, one remembers something at his own homestead...Fun.

Your mention of the Zenith....Brother came home from WWII and started to purchase new furniture to start up a place on their own and some of it was in our home before they got an apartment.  One of the items was a brand new Zenith console, blonde in color...radio part pulled out on the right side and set at an angle {with the green eye and all Jim}....and on the top left was a record changer that pulled out...{straight out}, and down on the bottom, believe it was the right side was the speaker with the grill cloth over it, etc....and the left bottom was for record storage and it also contain the Zenith "wave Magnet" antenna...Actually shaped like a magnet...but covered in a red and black fabric.....it could be pulled out and placed up on a window for better reception, etc.....Can't remember....but I believe it was short wave, AM and {really}, brand new FM.....I've seen that same radio console model {many years ago}, used in movie scenes....It did really sound great for that era....

As we said at  our Esso Station....Happy Motoring.

Oh, one more thing....Joe Pine....He had a late night TV show way back when.....and would get pretty nasty at times....Wonder if it's the same fellow you speak of being on radio a bit before that....I'd say it was.....

Quentin; I dont' recall Larry on all nite . But Joe Pine was the big star in mid 40s  ,he was on all nite in different time zones. Mom & Dad had a huge Zenith floor radio, the one with the unblinking green eye . My sis had a Trans Ocean suitcase size that looked like green gator hide on it. Just touch the dial and you were a 1000 mi. away . It is nice to remember things from other folks on this page . All these years were packed in a trunk ,then opened up again years later. This has been very restfull for us here in Boise befor we head to SLC. again to load for Bismark. The Oak & maple ,birch are turning color. ~~~~~ We laid around this ol' town too long and we gotta travel on.Good to hear from a Hoosier friend . Respectfully, Cannonball & Shirl ( Jim & Shirley )

Well, we did manage to get some rain this morning!  Not sure if we'll have more, but the sun is now out, so maybe, maybe not.

SUNDAY DINNER is now on the warmer bar:  Italian spaghetti w/your choice of:  garlic Texas toast, garlic bread, or garlic breadsticks, along with a garden salad, corn, green sweet peas, and oven roasted new red potatoes, lightly seasoned w/Italian spices.

For dessert today, you have several choices:  chocolate cake, apple, cherry or peach pie, and banana pudding.

Good Sunday morning to all!  Yep, it's a little cooler here this morning; and our rain chances are upgraded to 70% today.

Joe, thanks so very much for putting the coffee on, making the juice and lemonade!  As well as warming up the pizza, and fixing bacon and eggs.  Think I'll add some biscuits to the menu, and fix some gravy, and slice some tomatoes and cataloupe for us all to have, also.

Randy, glad to see you managed to make it back in, and Cannonball, good to see you in also!  And thank you for the prayers.

Everyone have a good morning, and I'll be back in about two or three hours, with the SUNDAY DINNER menu.

....switch7frg {Jim}:  Great subject.  Ole radio days....Even before my growing up days.

I remember by brother {11 yrs. older than I}, would bring in the big band era music and that was really great.  Getting a floor model radio for in the home at that time was like getting a big screen TV currently.

On the clear channel stations....{Much later}, as I was still about one day out on the Pacific on one of Uncle Sam's ships {headed home}.....I remember picking up Des Moines, Ia.....What a thrill....! "We must be getting close"......Just as  a side bar to this conversation:  Over seas {Korea}, at that time the best radio I had experience with was a Zenith "Trans-Oceanic" unit...They seemed to have the best ability to pull in far away stations.

By the way {Jim}....Didn't Larry King have an all night radio program many years ago, even before he arrived on TV....?

.....And just think, that grade down from Saluda, N C on the NS railroad ran from 4.7 and I believe as high as 5.1 for a short distance.

It is not in service now and hasn't been for several years but is not abandoned.  Believe it is embargoed.

Standing at that grade, and looking down I could hardly convience myself it really was a route that trains traveled on....

Yes, I've been on the grade you fellows are talking about {in our passenger car}, and for an interstate it is sure a bit different.

Wonder why they had to resort to such a steep {for interstate}, alignment....The Pennsylvania Turnpike {which crosses} mountain ranges....and constructed 1938 - 40 does not exceed 3% on the orignal 160 mi. segment.  {But....roughly, the original survey was for a railroad}.
