Hey, who needs a book when you can get everything about how a railroad is supposed to run right here on the forum.  (Or is it everything about how a railroad is NOT supposed to run?)

Bring the clams, I'll bring steaks for the grill, we can argue about it over dinner.

Just got back from seeing 844. It was two hours late - like usual, but was very impressive. I will post photos later, but I'm headed back out of the house for dinner with my mom and dad (can't get more exciting than that! Big Smile [:D])

Jeaton - remember - things can serve as a bad example, too.....

Working (it may be as a volunteer, but it's still work) on the railroad is a great way to find out how wrong everything you thought you knew really was.  Of course, some days we end up in discussions about such mundane things as the proper way to conduct a class 3 brake test when doing so by observing the brakes on the last car in the consist.....

I'll just grab a sandwich.  I didn't even do trainman duties today and I'm still pooped...

Good Monday morning, everyone.  Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Coffee is on, juices freshly made, and there's hot water for tea, along with iced tea and lemonade freshly made this morning.

On the breakfast bar:  turkey bacon, sausage patties, scrambled eggs w/cheese, pancakes, watermelon and cantaloupe chunks.

Other than the ones who went to Galesburg, and Larry working on the scenic, did anyone else see any interesting train sightings over the weekend?  Everyone have a good day, and take care.

Ugh!  Driver bought me a new car to drive to work.  It is Midnite Blue, has chrome wheels and leather seats - a convertible, to boot.  Problem is it will only go as fast as I can pedal it and while it is downhill to work, it is still quite a workout.  (No it isn't a bike or a cycle - it is a pedal cars for those of you old enough to remember them).

Actually, he brings me right to the door rain or shine and picks me up at the door, but does really give me a bad time about me driving and him riding.  Riding with his eyes closed makes him dizzy....

We went fishing - I fished in a book and through my bino-cu-lars and he caught a bass and a perch or some such.  There are so many grasses close to the shore - I can't fish - I get too frustrated and we spend more time in the reeds or the trees to make it worth our while for me to fish.  So I enjoyed the late afternoon breeze in the shade and he fished and got sunburned.

Train action was a little light this weekend, but fun as always.

I will have some cantaloupe and a toasted beagle (blueberry, please).  Gotta go check out Willy's pictures.....

Well, yesterday at this time I was out waiting for 844 to come through and tomorrow at this time I'll be out waiting for it. However, today, here I am in the Diner. Yesterday really was a good day, but I do need a break from the 844 chasing.

Mookie - I googled "pedal car". Quite the contraption, I must say. But just think, if we all used one of those for transportation, our pollution fears would be ended. Big Smile [:D]

The weather remains dry in this part of the state. There was a chance for storms on Tuesday night, but that appears to be getting less and less as Tuesday comes closer. Sigh [sigh]

That's all of my news from Omaha. Everyone have a good day!

Morning All,

Willy, can you speed up that cold front you've got headed our way? I'm not a fan of heat, and that three digit stuff you sent yesterday was a bit much...

Went out to CRRM Saturday. Stayed for awhile, but then the heat and the crowds (couple bus tours) got to me a little bit, so I packed up and headed out. Still, I managed to get the LF camera out and get some 4x5 shots while I was there. Now I get to spend an evening developing them tonight!

Well, must be on my way. Hope you all have a great day!

Well, going to give everyone a update on happenings around our house.  Semi-bad news:  two teens attempted to break into our house this morning.  Walt and I heard a noise, and thought the dog was into something.  So, as he was walking around to check on her, he heard a noise out back.  Someone had broken the back door window, and had one foot in the door, trying to get into the house.  When they saw Walt, they immediately ran!!!! (And Walt's not THAT scary!)  Walt said he hopes he scared the daylights out them, as they did him!!  It ain't everyday that you catch someone trying to break into your  HOME, when you ARE HOME!!!!!!!!

He came into the living room, and told me to call the police.  Someone had just attempted to break into our home.  So, I called 911, and an officer responded within five minutes.  After she (officer) took the report, we cleaned up the broken glass.  Now, Walt has some repair work, that he didn't want to have to do.

So, I'm not in the frame of mind to think about a lunch menu; so you all are on your own, I know there's enough in the fridge, that you can find something good to eat!

Does anyone have any nerve pills I can borrow?!?!  I'm still shaking like a leaf in a hurricane!

I'm very sorry to hear about the close call this morning, CW. I'm glad that the result was nothing worse than a broken window.

CW

I have a sense of how you feel.  Many years ago and at a far different place from here, I and my family were on vacation and while we were gone a kid from the neighborhood broke into our house.  Two or three in the morning.  Our neighbor next door would often get up during the night and while sitting in the dark near a window watched the perp crawl through a window into our house.  She called 911 and the guy was busted.

Didn't make much difference that he was caught or that we didn't lose anything.  It still hits you in the gut.

Needless to say, we improved the window locks, put the little chain thingys on the doors and got some timers to turn on lights while we were away.  Thing about burglars is that they tend to go for the place that looks like the easiest spot to get into.  Throw up a few obstacles or some lights and they usually move on.

Bad enough, but we're glad that there was nothing more.  Take care.

CW I'll stand guard by your back door for a while with my hammer if you want me to, just say the word.

I was at a country music festival this weekend...wow.  Easiest way to describe it! Saw some things I didn't want to see and some I shouldn't be allowed to see!  Good music, food, and fun too.  Willy thanks for the good weather, it was nice!

Mook does the car have two pedals or 4 for all the paws?

Hi CW,

Sorry to hear about your unnerving experience. I had that happen a couple of times when I lived in IL. Thankfully no one was ever hurt, and we only lost a VCR to it. Still, it is really scary, and it's hard to sleep for awhile after that.

Be sure to grab some warm milk before you turn out the lights on the DD&CS tonight. Hope you and Walt do OK tonight.

Dan:  two pedal, two rest....

CW/Mutt - you need to talk to Sweetie - I know she could be really ferocious if she could just get up the nerve.  So if anyone ever tries to crawl under your bed, they will find a wildcat.

Will the police patrol your area for a few days just in case?

I think strawberry shortcake and watermelon for lunch ought to just about do it!  Chef [C=:-)]  Well, you weren't expecting me to cook, were you?  I will mash the strawberries - that's about it - (yum!)

Mook I was starting to think that!

Great idea for lunch-it's pretty warm and those foods are great on warm days.  I'll grab some and sit in the shade (Larry-lean a bit to the left-Thanks!) for a while.

Just got back from the store:  went and bought some duct tape, so we can put something up over the opening. We had the kitchen light on, which you can see from the back door.  Maybe we'll have to start leashing the dog to the back door at night for awhile.

Mookie, yes, the officer said they'd have someone keep patroling the area for awhile.  She also said that a detective will call us in a day or two.  And strawberry shortcake and watermelon sound really good right now (that is, if I can feel like I can eat something).  Something like this does have a tendency to take your appetite from you.

Dan, we'll get back to you, on sitting by the back door with a hammer.  Maybe you might want to get a sledge hammer!!

CW I have several other implements of destruction.  It depends on how much defense you want at the door.  The perimeter can range from several hundred yards to several feet.  I'm just glad that nobody got hurt and hopefully your would-be burglar will think twice before coming back.

I got a letter in the mail today from my alma mater.  Seems I did pretty well for the last semester, as in a 4.0 GPA and got the official nod for the Dean's List!  One last toot of the collegiate horn I guess.

I'll grab seconds on the melon and shortcake, it's pretty good and there's hardly any hair in it at all! ( Smile [:)] ) Good job Mookie!

What say we have the Mexican Fiesta tonight?  I can start working on the meats and sides if that's what people want.  If you don't want that just holler out what you do and I'll do what I can!

Thanks all for the words of encouragement, it's not often you meet a "would be burglar" semi "face to face". (As was said, I hope I scared them more than they did me!) (no hammer, Louisville Slugger close at hand, but did have a 12 gauge shotgun reasonably close--they ran too fast!!)

Jay and Chris, you're very correct about it hitting you in the gut and being very unnerving; and I don't get scared very easily. (this came very close)

Mook, we can't get "under" our bed, it's on a pedestal, besides, who wants to get under a bed with a cat (especially after they've been in water!)

(Sweetie would "run and hide" somewhere else anyway!)

Dan, thanks for volunteering for standing guard, that is very much appreciated.

And A very hearty congrats on your grades.

I have yet to have anyone try to break into my house, regardless of whether I am home or not home. And if my house is ever broken into while I am gone, I am in the very least going to feel that my privacy has been violated. I have a great deal of sympathy for both Walt & Paula, and I know that if it were my home, I would not sleep very well tonight. I think I will offer up a prayer for Walt, Paula and Sarah tonight before I hit the sack.

I know that in a situation like this, I can't take the law into my own hands and let thugs answer to "Harry Calahan" and his Smith & Wesson .44 magnum, but that is exactly what I would be inclined to want to do.

CW -

Was away and missed word of your unwelcome visitors. Unfortunately, teens with time on their hands are often the most likely to burglarize homes and businesses for kicks and profit. In my days as an officer of the law and later an ADA I have seen many. There is nothing that feels worse than being a victim of a crime. Based upon my own experience as a victim of a strong arm robbery in my teens (what they thought to get from me I still don't know) I strongly empathize with you. I hope you are feeling better.

Note the Pez dispenser behind it.....

We had some kids getting into the house some years ago - they took little stuff, most of which we didn't miss until later (Honey, have you seen the....).  What was worse was the babysitter who stole just about anything negotiable.  Paperboy money left on top of the desk - gone.  My collection of pennies (in those blue binders, no less) - gone, and she had to root through my dresser to find them.  We didn't usually leave a lot of money around (we didn't have a lot of money), but I also heard through the grapevine later that others in town had had the same problem with her.

Dan, thanks for taking care of supper tonight.  The Mexican Fiesta sure looks and sounds good, but right now, Walt and I don't have much, if any, of an appetite.
