Good Monday morning, everyone!  Well, we're supposed to have a semi-good day around here, weather-wise.  At least until this afternoon, and then we have rain coming in.

The coffee is ready, fresh juice is made, and there's hot chocolate and hot tea available.

On the warmer bar, you will find:  turkey bacon, sausage patties & links, scrambled eggs, biscuits, gravy, oatmeal, grits,  hash brown potatoes, cantaloupe chunks and strawberries.

I hope everyone has a good day, and everyone be careful out there today!

Good Evening!

I managed to see the CNW heritage unit today, but it departed 1.5 hours late which kind of caused some stress in the family. My mom had some important errands to run, but my dad and I took the car to see the Heritage unit and didn't get back until about 2 hours later than we said we would. Needless to say, it's been a rather cold evening here at home, but I think things are improving. However, I do believe that I will be taking a little siesta from train watching until Easter Vacation. Wink [;)]

Anyway, I hope everyone had a good weekend!

That chicken sure smells good!  The girlfriend and I are back from La Crosse, WI where we took a 'mini-vacation'.  It was sure nice!  Glad to see things are still standing here.  I got to see my first BNSF and Canadian Pacific trains today.  That was neat.  There was also a Burlington Route steam engine on static display in La Crosse, but there was no r/n and it was pretty fenced in so no decent shots.  How about a Sunday Night Crackerbarrel?

Thank you from the crew:

I helped get the first batch (about 500 halves) on the fire (including getting the fire going), but I'm the man in charge of the cash register, so had to head inside to sell.

There's plenty of chicken left in the cooler - crowds have been down at almost everyone's events in the recent past, and we had more than we'd like left over.  We'll be cutting back some from now on.  I'd rather run out than have a lot left over.

Glad you all enjoyed!

Duff, DF is correct.  I will cook breakfast any time of the day, or night, whenever someone requests something from the breakfast menu.

And here's your fries and a bowl of soup.

We don't need a 24-hour breakfast sign.  Heck, there's nothing to say that waffles can't be eaten for lunch or even for dinner.  Same with omelets or any other "breakfast" food.

We've got a great cook who will make anything you want, whenever you want it.  Captain [4:-)]

Maybe here at the diner we oughta instill a "Breakfast served all day long 24 Hours"  thing here. Cause it's close to three in the afternoon and I want waffles, bacon and taters.

But for now I will jsut have some french fries and some soup

Nothing too facinating going on here, so...I'll just hang out here and make myself comfortable

Good morning, everyone.  What a beautiful day it is!  Captain [4:-)]

SactoGuy - don't forget that they don't need to completely clear out the debris before they can start driving pilings.  Once they have cleared one end, they can begin reconstruction on that end immediately.  My guess is that a single track will be up before April 10.

It'll be a major miracle if UP can get a single-track trestle up by April 1, 2007! Remember, they have to not only remove the remains of the old trestle, but also remove the soil around it, too! That is a major demolition job that could take up to a week to complete because both the wood from the trestle and the soil are considered hazardous material, which has to be specially handled for shipment to a special landfill.

It is hard for me to see how they could clear the debris and drive piling {after surveying for their placement, etc.}, and build a trestle deck and all the rest by April 1st....but that seems to be what the reports are indicating.

Time will tell....

Good Sunday morning to all!

Coffee is ready, along with fresh oj, oj/tangerine, hot tea, hot chocolate available.

On the warmer bar, you will find, for your breakfast:  sausage, bacon, eggs, hash browns, oatmeal, toast, and grits.

Larry, sounds like you've got a very good Sunday Dinner going for us.  Will look forward to it.

I hope I don't wake anyone up.  I played into the classic Irish stereotype and drank like a fish today, BUT I did listen to lots of Irish music and enjoyed some meat and potatoes.  Today (before I drank) I drove a lot and happened to pass the Monticello Railway Museum in Monticello, IL.  It looks like a few of the cars there got new paint jobs, or at least a good wash.  I will have to investigate further.  Cool [8D]

Have you noticed that firefighters often are among the best cooks around? My second cousin--who retired as a firefighter in the Sunnyvale Public Safety Department about a year ago--is a very good cook indeed. Dinner [dinner]

By the way, UP is moving in a large demolition crew to remove the remains of the wooden trestle. They're going to use special hoppers to remove the creosote-contaminated wood and dirt to special landfill. Once the demolition is complete (hopefully in a about four days!), they'll start work on a new trestle, with one track done first hopefully by early May and the second track done by the end of May.

Had to pass up pizza tonight for prime rib at a fire department banquet.....

I've got dinner covered for tomorrow - my fire department's famous barbequed chicken, baked beans, coleslaw, macaroni salad, rolls, and pudding for dessert.  Your choice of the usual diner beverages.

We're lighting the fire at 7 AM.  Chicken will be on the warmer at noon....  None will be muddy....

Mutt, thanks for fixing the pizzas and putting them out on the warmer bar.  Didn't think we'd be out that long, but at least I had my hubby to take over for me.

Hope everyone has had a very good day, and hope what's left of the evening, will be just as good for everyone.

Yikes!

I leave for a couple of days and there is four pages of posts in the diner to read. It is going to take a while for me to catch up!.  Nice to see you back CW, you are the best cook in the diner and we all missed you (especially your menu planning skills).

I have been off competing at two track meets so I couldn't come in to eat and chat, but i did see some trains on the way to my hammer competition down by the Columbia River ( on the border of Washington and Oregon).  I saw a lot of beat up rail cars and mismatched locomotives. Some of the best catches were a blue GN car with the mountain goat on the side and no graffiti. I also saw a CSX engine (which may not seem rare to all you East coaster's but they are uncommon out west) and a Ferromex locomotive. The Ferromoex unit was a first for me and a very rare find especially so far north. Unfortunitly I missed its road number, so i don't know what specific unit it was. I also saw a strangly painted BNSF engine that had what looked like a heritage paint sceme except that it was all different shades of yellow (and of course i didn't catch the road number). I guess trying to watch trains while driving the opposite direction  at 60 mph on I-5 is not ideal. I did find a viewing bridge over a small yard though that I might go back and spend a day at next year. I would have stopped and spent the rest of the day there but I didn't want to get stuck in rush hour traffic farther north. (That and my Mom wanted to get home and was a little too tired to indulge my train chasing habbits.) If anyone knows why a Mexican locomotive would be so far north or what was up with the strangly painted BNSF I would love to know.

One happy train geek signing off.

And pardon my spelling mistakes, but i can't seem to type today.

I couldn't find either the CNW Heritage unit or the 6936. No matter where you go, it's hard to see too deep into the yard and there aren't any roads that go through/over the yard, so if the engines aren't near the edge, you're out of luck. That was the situation today. It wasn't a total loss though as things were really busy today. There was an almost constant parade of trains through Council Bluffs and in just one hour I saw 5 trains. Not too bad, but it would have been nice to see what I was really looking for.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!!

I'm going to go to Council Bluffs today and try to get some pics of the CNW Heritage Unit and the unpatched Dash 9s, since they are supposed to arrive in a little bit. I believe the 6936 is also in Council Bluffs today, so if I get some decent shots, I will post them.

Otherwise, I hope everyone has a great Saint Patrick's Day, and don't drink too much green beer! Big Smile [:D]
