Mookie

Y'know, Murray - I love watching House Hunters.  But one of the complaints is always that it is about a 30-45 min drive to work.  Guess people like you just don't exist in their world.

I just groan over some of the "problems."

Hi Mookie...

I have 2 more weeks of this...then I am back home in San Antonio for good....  Cowboy

Ahh, two days on the railroad in the books.  I'm beat.  Our PA system is out of order, so that means a lot of interfacing with the passengers to clue them into upcoming sights, etc.  I like interfacing with the passengers - but right now that means staying on the move, so the feet and legs take a beating on the "rolling deck."

Next two outings will be as engineer - I get to just sit there and take orders...

It was cool in the mountains, but warmed up to near 70 both days.  Stayed dry, too.  The rain arrived at the house at about the same time I did.

Normally Mookie = @ in the sun!   *

Have to get on laundry today.  Wanted to wait until about Tuesday, but... and that will be what is hanging out on Driver if I don't get it done today.

Dr appt tomorrow, so it will be Tuesday before I can resume @s.  And even then it is ^@^ with my ears on.  Something or someone always manages to interrupt!

Saw trains late this morning.  Heard Amtrak around 8 am going east.  They come later due to the dew point in Colorado.  Lots of southbound traffic - not much going to Joe.  Even read the tankers 111a?  I think that is right.  Who knows any more!

* for the new or uninformed - that is a cat nap.  But no worry - no one ever reads the diner except the people that post on here.  Maybe we should have a guest book?  Like "What's My Line?" - will guests sign in please?

Good Morning

We are having dull dull dull with a chance of afternoon showers here...high of 66 expected.

Yesterday was my getting things ready for the redo of the attic for Audrey. That meant finding even MORE junk ending up you-know-where, that's right...MY space.Bang Head These extra 'things' came out of two...mmmmm....storage rooms we forgot existed up there.Dunce So, even more junk to haul off to the recyclers....

Today will be finishing off the prep and getting some supplies to start laying in a new floor up there....

Hey Tree - if you are lurking - is sand ever used in other cases of remote location fires?  If you can't helicopter water in - can you helicopter in sand?  A pound of sand vs a pound of water - same weight?

Water frequently travels by helicopter.  Some choppers have tanks built into their underside and must be filled on the ground.

The huge "Skycranes" usually have a large tube hanging down that they can use to fill from ponds and lakes (the subject of a "Mythbusters" episode),

And a device called a "Bambi bucket," essentially a large canvas bucket hanging below the bird, sees frequent use.  The Bambi bucket can be fitted to virtually any helicopter capable of handling the load, a handy feature.

One advantage of water over sand in this application is that retardants and extinguishing agents can be added to the water.

Another is that water is easier to move than sand - which would require some mechanical means (conveyor belts, shovels) to move from point A to point B.

Of course, there are fixed wing aircraft, but that's another story.

Bad day @ Red Rock - Forums in turmoil.  Zip it!

However - I did read one bright newsy note.  The Jersey fire was stopped by digging a trench and filling it with sand!  Brilliant!  I would have never thought of that.  And that is the one thing they have a lot of - sand.

On the other side - Colorado had all those fires and no water.  Water finally arrived!

Hey Tree - if you are lurking - is sand ever used in other cases of remote location fires?  If you can't helicopter water in - can you helicopter in sand?  A pound of sand vs a pound of water - same weight?

I know - where do we get the sand.  AZ/NM for CO, I guess?  NE has sand pits, but they now have fish in them.

Poor New Jersey.  They can't catch a break.

Indeed.  It appears that the fire department was behind the eight ball right from the get-go and never really caught up.

They ended up drawing a "line in the sand," hoping to stop things there.  It's gonna be a long night.

Hey!  It is 67 degrees here and I am watching Colorado slop over into Kansas!  The rain has run right along the border between KS & NE and now with CO running into KS - they eventually be bigger than Texas!!!!!  And become the new midwest swamp!

Poor New Jersey.  They can't catch a break.

I've got to get my truck in for an alignment check after that pothole I hit on I75 in Detroit, on my way to the Ambassador Bridge last month.

A brief light show last night (although those around us seemed to get more "action"), and some early rain, but the bulk of the rain came overnight.  Nothing like Denver, though.  Never mind the Scotties - I hope MC has his waterwings on...

Gonna be wet all day here.  Better head down for the PO before another shower comes through.

Murray: The rebel yell you heard at about 5pm today was me hanging on for dear life as I bounced across I-20, think I unloaded all three air ride suspensions in a few spots......

Headed for Albany, GA tomorrow, then hopefully north into cooler weather for the weekend......

Well, I remember....

Very few of the "younger generation" know who Irving Berlin & Kate Smith are/were....

For years during the Crusade For Children Telethon here in Louisville, that particular song Always closed the show.

Sir C:  Lots of relatives from Washington Co Ks area.

Was the engineering math something they tried to do on their cell phone?

We got some of your rain, finally.  Thank you! 80 here and soooo nice.

Mooks: Appears the E-tribe is into fuzzy math or pipeline contractor's cat-skinners buried a salt water brine line on the wrong side of the easement line and too shallow. Pipeline owner getting good dose of local hate & discontent. Wouldn't think much would grow in salt water, especially if Farmer Jones digs it up in the spring. We couldn't determine what datum was used in the construction drawing, much less the as-built....so off we go.

Spending tomorrow on Uncle Pete's line between I-25 and the steel mill helping another crew identify stuff for the highway rubber-tired tribe so they don't impact the railroad adversely. If there is lightening, we sit in the truck and get bored until it passes. (Can't wear the tinfoil hardhat and raingear in t-storms. - Frowned on for some reason. Dunce - $50K worth of GPS gear becomes a giant lightning rod....) Not much lightning here, so the boys are not glued to Boss Hen like black furry Velcro.

Mudchicken Nothing is worth taking the risk of losing a life over. Come home tonight in the same condition that you left home this morning in. Safety begins with ME.... cinscocom-west
