I don't sew (beyond reattaching a button or something): it would take away from Pat's primary purpose in life. But I'm not a stranger to the inside of fabric stores, as I serve as her color consultant/memory for matching things. And I can quite often get a new shirt out of it; that's usually my souvenir from longer trips that we make.

The only comment I remember hearing about my sewing came a few days ago when my daughter, Katie, came in and found me about to sew a button on a shirt. She seemed surprised, and I thought she should not have been surprised, for I am sure she knew that her mother did not sew. Indeed, Ricki had told me that when she was taking home economics, any sewing machine she approached to use immediately broke down. I always took care of any simple sewing that she needed done. The most complicated sewing that I did for her was hemming the skirt of a Snuggly (or whatever they were called) up so she would not trip on it, and hemming two nightgowns up so she could manage them better.
When I was in college, I made a skirt for our observatory dome (about eight feet in diameter) out of canvas, so that rain would not blow in between the top of the wall (about five feet high) and the dome. I sewed pockets to hold lead weights that were to keep the wind from lifting the skirt. Now, if you want a tough job of sewing by hand, sew canvas; even with the use of a sailor's palm it was a slow job.
Even though I was somewhat pleased with the work that I had done in the building and maintaining of that little observatory, I rejoiced when I learned, about eight years later, that the college had a much, much, better observatory that had, among other improvements, electrical drives on the telescope mount. (I was happy to have been able to crank the first scope around at such a rate that someone else who was viewing was able to keep an object in view.)
Five years ago, when I visited my college for the first time since 1971, the only vestiges of the original observatory were the concrete piers I had poured to serve as anchors for wire ropes that kept the dome from being blown off by a strong wind.

I have word that CW is alive and well, but lacks Internet access at the present time.
Got some sewing to do. When I was picking up fabric at the fabric store yesterday, a woman commented that it was nice to see a man sewing. No big deal. Just building things in a different medium is all...

Dunno - no mention on FB by 'Mutt.
Between working on the RR and getting ready for a local model railroad show this weekend, I've been rather distracted and hadn't noticed that she was MIA.
Joe, those chores just never go away, do they.
If horse needs home - you have my address. I will even break it if it isn't already.....

Fishing tally - Eagle 1, Heron 1, Driver 0.
Got down to 56 overnite and I think everyone slept in today except us. And the noisy plovers, terns and seagulls. Had trouble napping in Millie!
Dull, foggy and very cool out here...right now we are sitting at 55 going up to 70 later on, hopefully in the sunshine.
Having some surprise visitors today in the form of niece and nephew show up a little later on...because both are going to the same school it should be a bit of fun for them here...both love operating the trains here
Got a few things to catch up on...better get at them...cya!!
Evening everyone. Just rolled into Shreveport...and its just as hot and dry here as in Alamo City.
Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend.
Now its back to work....
BOC - pulled pork - one of my favorites. Save me some!
BC - I knew someone that would buy candy corn and mix it with salted peanuts. I was never that fond of it, but it seemed to be a big hit with him.
tree68 CShaveRRBrach's has a "pumpkin spice" flavor now that is addictive. Gee - Thanks, Carl. And I have to go grocery shopping, too...

Thanks for that news...and here I sit with nothing anywhere NEAR that here....
Afternoon...
It were a dull day here..got to 70..and sat there all afternoon...
Having a wonderful BBQ with pulled pork sammiches and salads....good day to be outdoors!!
SJ, candy corn is probably my biggest weakness in that department (I think I like the texture), and we've been buying it for a few weeks now. It doesn't get stale here. Brach's has a "pumpkin spice" flavor now that is addictive.
How big a lifestyle change it will be remains to be seen...by Joe! I know that when I went permanently from afternoons to days, back in 2006. And some people can't make the transition well. I don't think you'll have that problem, Joe, as you have at least tried to stay awake on weekends. But congratulations and good luck!
Congrats Joe on 1st shift! That will be a big life style change. No more naps!
Cooler today - 90's rest of week and dry. I figure we will have 90's then snow, then more 90's then ice....
And Hallowe'en candy is out for sale! Sure, let it go stale at your house instead of at the store!
blownout cylinder Think I'll get a large 3 gallon IV bag with rawcaffeine please. Been kinda busy with w**k related w**k and outdoor stuff that had to get done...we ended up with a two week period of heat and stick...now we seem to be heading for a big cooling off period......highs in the high 60's to low 70's...of course with a few days of extra HHH for comparison purposes only...

Humid? I guess it's humid!
That, and we had scattered showers on Saturday. Between the rain and everything else, I spent most of the day wet.
I think I drank a couple of gallons of water during the four days I did on the railroad this weekend. Glad to be home!
Our 1950 ALCo RS3 broke Saturday - amazing what an inch or so tear in a diaphram can do. In this case, we weren't able to bail off the independent. Fortunately one of our RS18u's was nearby and available, so we were able to get our usual runs in until our chief mechanic found a replacement part.
Long, long weekend. I'm pooped. Time for beddy-bye.
Afternoon all:
Nice and HOT here in Alamo City. Currently sitting at 100 with a feels like of 105.
Unfortunately no chance of rain here or the foreseeable future.
Hope everyone is having an enjoyable (and safe) Labor Day weekend.
.....Finally, yesterday afternoon in two different phases, we actually received some rain....Rain...! Yes. rain. We're in a pretty dry condition here. Our local White River is lacking of water, it seems to be barely flowing.
I hear, and see of so many areas of getting too much of it recently but certainly not here in our County. But yesterday in about a half hour's worth of time, we had some really hard downpours...And my rain gauge showed that total to be: 1.25"...That certainly will help.
In fact, now I can expect to be mowing again sometime this week, which I don't mind at all. Like to see the grass nice and trimmed and green.

^~^
breakfast is all set.some areas around Toledo got 6 inches of rain.We didn't get any.going to go help mom grocery shop.
That's the really bad thing about asparagus--those plants don't offer too much shade. The temperature in Chicago went down by 25 degrees (96 to 71) in about an hour this evening when the storm went through. Here in the Green Valley we dropped from 92 to 69, perhaps not quite as quickly. Our rain total was about a half-inch; we were on the low side.
