Sir Chicken:  We were track side just before dawn and only stayed about 1.5 hours before we gave up to the humidity and came home.  It was oppressive at 7 am.  I guess you never really get used to it, no matter how long you live with it.

Tomorrow nite the Huskers play your neighbor (and ours) Wyoming.  Football will probably melt!  But on the bright side - maybe it will also melt the asparagus at the NE/KS/CO state line?  Smile, Wink & Grin

Mooks:

CSX 7921 went by us yesterday south of Sidney on a BNSF junk train headed to Alliance from Denver. It clearly was not set up to run at 4600 + feet of elevation ; must have smoked really bad in Denver.

After four days in the field surveying in 100+ degree heat, we packed it in and went home. The sun won. Brains were cooked and productivity fell in a hole (even starting at sunrise, we could not escape the heat at the NE/KS/CO state line meeting).

BNSF had heat restrictions everywhere and stressed rail had the surfacing gangs , section gangs and the overworked welders busy with disturbed track (and the tie gangs sent home early)

The crazies are on the roads early today. Be extra careful out there!

In the process of looking for a link for another thread, I found one that included video of an area I'm familiar with.  Someone shot video of fall colors around Highland, Michigan and set it to the music I was looking for.

I've been on several of the roads, albeit years ago in a couple of cases.

Mookie, Katie puts sunflower seed out in two feeders, and other birds flock to the feeders; the quail ignore the feeders and look for their own food. When I was walking in our neighborhood, I saw two or three other quail families, but I have not seen any while walking in the lower Avenues; they may visit back yards, but I have not seen any large front yards down there.

Houston gains about 2 pounds over the winter and sheds about 15 over the summer.  He will never "grow up"!

We are going to be 100 today and 101 maybe Friday.  But I don't have to be out in it, so....so what.  But we do have our first football game Sat - albeit - 7 pm.  2 hours after the high temp.  Think I will listen on my trusty radio.

RJ - are you still out there?  We play Wyoming....Thumbs Up

Larry the noisiest cars would be autoracks.

The coil cars seem to "sing" very nicely, too...

Our thoughts go out to Houston Ed, who must be on his fourteenth or fifteenth barrel of Gatorade by now.  The weatherguessers are forecasting temps at or about 100 through the weekend.

Johnny - I know we have quail in the county, but never within the city.  Maybe they don't like birdy seed.  Our resident robin thinks it is gourmet!

Silly bird!

I saw our quail families again this evening. I looked out the door to the backyard--and all thirteen quail were in the yard, finding something to eat in the grass. It had been some time since I had seen them, but all nine chicks(fully grown now), seven and two,  and the four parents were busy getting their evening snack.

We have scattered showers now, and could use more rain.

Mookie
Watched a BNSF leave town fully loaded (coal) and I commented to Driver how quiet those cars were.  Not a squeal, bang or clunk.  Just silence.  Really sneaky.

Whilst I was attempting to sleep overnight at Deshler a few weeks ago (not the easiest thing to do - especially if you're in a tent) a loaded coal train used the southwest "transfer."  It's a pretty tight curve, and some cars (and trains) sing pretty loud going around it.

Not this train.  Hardly a peep.  Of course, you could still hear the cars going around the curve, but it was a low rumble, not a high-pitched scream.

There are things you just can't do on a wintry day... went fishing again, saw our young heron in the same place ( he strolled slowly away while Driver was setting up), Driver caught some nice carp - I got to kiss them and send them back (ugh) and there is now one very large snapping turtle out there with a hook, line and red/white bobber attached to his shell.  He wanted the whole 9 yards and Driver wasn't going to argue with him.

Stopped at trains for a few minutes and Joe...!!

Saw 2 CSX units on an empty DE coal train.  They were moving pretty fast around the yard and out onto the main line.  Unusually noisy engines!

Watched a BNSF leave town fully loaded (coal) and I commented to Driver how quiet those cars were.  Not a squeal, bang or clunk.  Just silence.  Really sneaky.

Seriously hot, seriously dry, semi-seriously humid followed by what the Almanac is calling for a seriously cold winter.

Hmmm - guess a normal 4 season year here.

.....We'll keep in touch J.  In fact, regarding that 10 pm phone time...it's sneaking up on me right now, and several emails to answer...Been outside sitting a bit...{Ella and I}, and now must get started.

Beautiful day here, and now we're in for the 90's for a week ahead...according to the weather people.

Add to that I must have everything "cleared" by 10 pm ea. evening for a very important phone conversation.

Burning/burnt houses do have a smell all their own.  Been there, done that, too many times.

Ran the locomotive all weekend (three days).  Found out I kinda like running the old RS-3.  Must be because it's almost exactly the same age as me...

Got a pleasant surprise at the RR station this morning (Sunday).  A card, addressed to me, thanking me for giving a young man the opportunity to get a cab ride.  Seems he's quite the rail buff - the engineer he rode with was impressed with his knowledge, especially for his young age.  He wrote a thank you himself, and his parents added one, too.  Kinda nice to see the newest generation be so interested.  I left the card for others to see, as others were involved with him through the day.

Had a slightly older guest in the cab with me today (early teens, maybe).  He was fairly quiet, but did allow that getting a cab ride "made his entire summer."

Been a long weekend.  Time for bed.

I don't think a house fire ever smells good, unless the wood ash so overpowers the plastics and so forth that are used in a lot of construction.  Trust me on this one...our apartment building had a fire nearly 40 years ago that moved us out for months, and I often get flashbacks of that sickening smell.

As for our lawn mower, no problems keeping it in the garage.  It has a one people-power prime mover, which seldom gets hot enough to ignite anything.
(Now, if we could just move our car back into the garage...still moving boxes and contents out of it.)
