JoeKoh
Tree better bring the rain gear tonight for Deshler.

While I was setting up tonight in Deshler, I discovered that despite checking it off on my packing list, the tent didn't make muster.  I did pack my canopy, with sides, so that's set up and ready to go.  Looks like a line of showers headed this way, too.  The truck is parked closely in case things go sour...

Had a great time with Carl today, despite Uncle Pete being a little stingy with the trains.  In the couple hours I spent at Rochelle, UP only managed to display one train.  BNSF provided four for our entertainment, including a push move on a local.

We did see a few trains (including scoots) as we followed the tracks back to Carl's stomping grounds.  After lunch with Carl and Pat, it was time to wander across Indiana and into Ohio, where CSX did much better, sending no less than four trains though Deshler in about a half hour, including two cases of two going by at once.   Several have gone by since, as well.  Quiet right now - and as I type that, I hear a horn in the distance....

Then I'll try for some sleep!

Hope Uncle Pete doesn't use up all his trains tonight.  Four by so far, one with distributed power, and one obviously headed in the other direction just a couple of minutes later.

Safely parked in Dekalb, IL, resting my tired tootsies and recovering from the drive that brought me here.

Started the day in Durand, MI.  The Amtrak person there (it's an "unmanned" station - he was there to open the station before the morning train) said they'd had a problem at the St Clair Tunnel (train broke down in the tunnel) that morning which had delayed Amtrak by an hour and a half, along with a lot of other traffic.

I guess so!  I was there from about 9 to something after 1, and saw one train, a westbound manifest, shortly after I arrived.  And that was it.   Supposedly there was a stacker someplace that should have come through, and some trains were being held in Battle Creek, buy none showed their face.

Had a couple of nice conversations, one with the son of a GT trainmaster on the Detroit division.  Said he would have worked for the railroad, but dad wouldn't hire him...

Later the usual night Amtrak caretaker stopped by and we had a nice chat as well.

After a visit to the museum in the station (doesn't open until 1PM on Sundays, in case you're planning a visit) it was westward ho, which went well until I hit Benton Harbor on I-94.  As near as I can figure, they ordered an evacuation of the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and sent them all to Chicago...  Well, not really, but there sure seemed to be a lot of people headed home after their weekend "at the shore."  I think it took me over an hour to cover the 30 miles or so through IN.  Once I got into IL, things went much more smoothly.

Tomorrow, Rochelle, and whatever else Carl decides to spring on me.  Then it's off to Deshler and Fostoria.

Sitting here at the motel in Dekalb, there've been two trains by that I know of.  Unfortunately, management wasn't kind enough to put me in a room with a view of the tracks...

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday.

Sad news in the papers:  Singer Eydie Gorme died...aged 84.

Good Morning

Another nice and sunny day for us....high near 72...mmmmm...where did summer, as in HHH, go to?  ???

The band did the club in last night...packed house, and blown fuses!! LOL!!!  P-)  (rofl)  ???  (:)) It appears  that one of their staff put in the worgn fuses and we showed up, LOL!!  (rofl) But we did the show, with back up fuses installed, after the the night manager found where the other package of fuses went....

BTW...whoever was asking about the video...the club we are at is getting a professional to do this in a few weeks...we shall see then....  ;)

I hope you enjoyed Durand, and were successful at seeing something (anything!) there.

Last time we were there, we went into the depot and looked around.  Saw a lot of stuff before we realized that we shouldn't have been inside (the door hadn't been locked properly, but our opening it sounded an alarm...they were very nice about it, and we apologized).

I wasn't at Durand in its heyday, either, but it was still the Detroit Division headquarters, with the dispatcher upstairs in the depot, the roundhouse intact, and crews working the yard around the clock.  I spent a night in a caboose on the caboose track in the yard, and was lulled to sleep by the occasional chirpy revving up of Alco S2s, kicking cars.

Now, all that's left of the Detroit Division on CN is the line down to Detroit from there.  The rest has been shortlined or taken up.  And the crossing on the hot corner of the station is now a pair of OWLS diamonds.  That's probably the saddest thing to befall the place since removal of the manual gates.

Safe travels...see you in Rochelle tomorrow!

Ms Mook - Tornados tend to migrate north this time of year.

I didn't realize that.  I thought they stayed in the alley and then died in about July.

A teaching moment!  Thank you!

Ms Mook - Tornados tend to migrate north this time of year.

Two days of "Milford Memories" and my feet are beat.  Saw some old friends and re-acquainted with some new ones, bought a few things for myself and other.  One is a wood/plywood cutout picture frame with a railroad theme.  Saw lots of other things I could have bought.

Also picked up a book from the local historical society (where I helped flesh out a docent's explanation of how townships were created here).  The title is "Ten Minutes Ahead of the Rest of the World."  The title comes from a prank some young men pulled, wherein the apparently set the town's official clock ten minutes fast, which caused some confusion until it was discovered what happened.  The book is a history of the old hometown.

According to those who know, this year's event may make the record books (for this event) - it was reportedly as busy an anyone has ever seen it.

Getting some rest before heading up to Durand in the morning, followed by a trek west in the afternoon, enroute to Rochelle.  I've been up to Durand before.  Sure would have liked to have seen it in it's heyday.  I lived here for part of that, but wasn't yet a railfan.

A couple more things to do, then it's time to hit the rack.

Mookie:   We've been lucky(?) here, everything is all green...but it still seems the area to the north of TO is getting those tornado thingees....Whistling

Isn't that a little unusual for Canada?  Actually, we are pretty stable here.  Just a touch of rain once in awhile, but should be hot and dry until Sept (normally) so crops will grow and then dry for harvest.  No tornado-thingees but not letting down our guard, either.

We heard from Mo-sas and he is stranded on a hill where he lives in MO and unable to get to town.  They are dry but bored.

News Flash - Kansas and Missouri are now underwater.  They will be combining later this week and be one new state - KanMo....

Hear fishing will eventually be their commodity of choice.

And do you think any of that would cross the border and sprinkle Nebraska?  Ha!

Good Morning

Dull and very muggy out here, expecting some 'excitement' here as well, high of 83 feeling like 99 later on.

I'm going off to the mall and get some walking in...having been remiss in my walking lately is no fun. Also this morning, get to go to vampire's and get more blood taken out of me. Hopefully everything will be clear...

Have a good day, everyone!!

With the heat index, felt like 108, official temp was 100….ya know it’s hot when your boots and gloves are squishy….

Heat advisory continues through Thursday, expected to hit 101 tomorrow.

Hey Carl, Hell aint sounding so bad right now,

A friend living in Austin had the devil moving people out of Hell in a blues song he wrote...it's too hot!! Hope things cool off down there!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Evening...

Basically was a good day here...I managed to get some of the plans put together..the fun part will be wiring management. We have something like 3 20 channel patchbays to muck with ...hopefully these will be the only ones needed...but we all know how that goes, roight?  :)

The floor is going to be fun too. I need to lift the floor up by a couple of inches to get some underpadding down for the drums...too much bass reflection in one area...  :-/

Well, better be off and getting some reading done...have a good night!!
