Johnny - sounds like you have a good view!  They sell houses on tv for lots of $$$$, simply because of the view.  I am more practical than that - so a good house with a good view is excellent.

Joe - the snow is done for now - our really only snow storm of the winter - and as soon as it warms up later this week - I am going to have Driver take me trackside and we are going to just eat, sit, nap and enjoy the trains.  Thursday is usually a busier day, so might try that!  If it is cool, we will sit on the north side and soak up the sun.  If warm, we will sit under the overpass in the shade.

And a fine good morning it is...

As our rivers/creeks/streams have awoken to the sound of rushing high waters from all the dang runoff and rain we got yesterday ...sheeesh. The ground around here is so saturated that we squish and leave footprints in the mud around hereWhistling

...and we are now headed back towards good old winter...for another winter week....Grumpy

Can you tell  I'm awake? I had to create another channel for our backyard lake to escape...again...in the middle of the downpour...as it got into our basement via one of our window wells....sighSigh

So, today I will be checking the neighbourhood out as it will only be  40% chance for anything to fall out'n the skies....Huh?

Have a good day, everyone!!

Rain here overnight, which has hastened the disappearance of the snow.  At least it's been a gentle rain and it's not too warm, so we haven't seen any flooding.

It took a while to figure out where it was all coming from, but I think I have most of the incoming water to my basement stopped.  A construction project some years ago destroyed the drain and I've never run it down as it will require a lot of digging in the clay.  If it's wet it's sticky, and if it'd dry it's like a rock.

Of course, no snow means lots of dry grass.  The state-wide ban on outdoor burning is about to kick in, but we still manage to get a few folks who decide to set their fields on fire.

5.5 inches of a little wetter snow Sunday and yesterday.  Pretty much all gone today.  And if it doesn't hurry and get into the ground, it will evaporate by Friday.

We are now 11 inches of moisture below where we should be at this time of the year. And they aren't predicting any moisture for all spring/summer/fall.  We shall see.

Took 2 pack mules and Millie grocery shopping today.  Snack food was getting low.  Mischief

Looks like winter isn't over yet - still snow in the forecast.  Just goes to show how different the weather can be year to year.  We've had to put up with snow and melting ice for our St Patty's Day barbeque, and we've had it interupted by grass fires.  You just never know.

We seem to have lost a local "web board" (AKA forum) here in my area.  The discussions tended to be political, but they were entertaining.  Don't know if someone pulled the plug financially or for some other reason.  Kinda hoping it comes back on line, but if it doesn't, oh, well...

10 degrees out....YOW!

Will have to put on heavy coat to feed birds this morning!

Joe - do they hold DEEX both loaded and MT in that siding?  (I know that sounds kind of DUH, but I have my reasons)  I remember when I saw my first Mookie - parked outside town waiting to get into the yard.  I was so impressed with the looks of it!  We sat and studied it for awhile before crossing in front of it to come into town.  Bet the crew thought we were...foamers!

We're definitly having March weather for today....At least a half inch of snow since last night.  Today, it would snow and get so dark one would think it being in the depths of a January snow blizzard....And, of course, the next 5 mi. the sun is shining..

In fact, right now, the sky appears like a peaceful Summer day...blue sky and puffy white clouds....Roads are just wet.

Mookie, how could you and Driver have been msitaken for foamers? Surely, you not do have railroad emblems or heralds on your vehicle or on your clothing? I have two or three tie clasps each with a locomotive on it (and they have been noticed by other passengers), and a sister-in-law once gave me a tie with many little locomotives on it (I wore it once). When I retired, I was given a large picture of some European train on a bridge; I asked what it was, and the person in charge of the gift said there was something on the back that had been covered up when the picture was framed; I never hung it on the wall. Ricki and I did have a picture of the steam engines on a train that we once rode on the wall, and a stock picture of the City of Portland (the train we met on) on the wall. When riding on steam excursions, I did wear an engineer's cap and had my goggles to protect my eyes, but these were simply commonsense items (I also wore them at times when riding scheduled passenger service and stood in a vestibule to watch what was going on).

Johnny - my only identifying mark is a tiny koala bear ear cuff that I usually don't leave home without wearing.   And the Driver wears a baseball hat with N on it (Nebraska).  So no - we have no emblems, cameras, cowcatcher on the front of Millie, personalized license plates or anything else to make us look like foamers - except that look of awe I get on my face when something railroady gets close.

We have had people ask us if we were counting traffic, waiting for a nephew or grandson to go by on a "train" or if we had car trouble.  We are not only very happy here - we are very friendly, too!

I have train treasures here at home that friends have given me, but don't collect on my own.  I want only the real thing (and the crew to operate it)  and get no cooperation in that endeavor.   Maybe someday they will build some tracks close to the Driver's fishing hole and we can both be delighted on the same day!   For now, we take turns.

The Opelika, AL mill that was the setting for the film "Norma Rae" is apparently a charred ruin, and may still be burning as I write this.

The building was being torn down.

http://www.oanow.com/news/opelika/article_3a29adee-8b95-11e2-a3c4-001a4bcf6878.html

The mill was located alongside a former Seaboard line.

as you know coal trains are low priority for a railroad.the Ns line is the ex-NYC main from Chicago to New York. Lot's on stack trains roll by.Plus it could have been waiting for Amtrak as well.Sometimes they sit for a few days. With the cold weather they will keep the power on to keep air running through the brakes. As for be a foamer,we've been called worse.Usually crews see our truck and wave.

Afternoon all.  Sitting here at the computer, while brother is hammering away in the kitchen.  He's putting up the trim/molding along the kitchen wall, and around the base of the island in the kitchen.  That's where we normally eat all our meals.  I have a little stool by my chair, so that I can get up on the barstool.  Now, he's taking a break, and getting Allie down for her nap.  He's the only one that can get her to go down for nap, without making a fuss, or running around saying "You can't catch me!"  Yesterday, she had her 4th birthday, and this Saturday is her 'party' and will get to open her presents.  Going to be a mad house here, with who knows all that will be here.

CW - I have a barstool in my kitchen - a wooden one.  Driver had to saw about 5 inches off it so I could sit comfortably and peel potatoes.

Tree - a candle left unattended burned for 24 hours and burned out all the apartments in a 2 story building.  Water took care of first floor businesses.  One young lady lost her cat and 2 birds and it didn't even start in her apt.

Sad!

Joe - finally got to watch some trains.  Boy are you getting a slug of that low priority coal.  Had a couple come in for refill and one head to St Joe with mix and tankers.  And caught a couple of #'s I didn't have yet.

Sat in the sun, ate lunch and just enjoyed having the widows down.  Tomorrow, we are going to have lunch out and go to the park so the driver can count the geese and ducks.  71 degrees tomorrow - so bet those geese and ducks will also be in shorts and halter tops, running!  I will watch all the dogs running with them.  Looks like AKC dog show on nice days.

Cold for the weekend.  Ah Spring in Lincoln!

BC - and a pair of binoculars to look at ducks and geese, too!

If our weather goes as per usual - this will be spring and then winter will return off and on until about 15th of May when it will be full fledged summer!

Travelled through the snow belt on the way to and from our equipment shops today.  And it lived up to it's name, although the roads were basically pretty good - I did encounter some drifting, but most of it was affecting the southbound lanes - I was headed north in the PM.

Got the chicken all seasoned and ready for the grill on Sunday.  Four hundred and fifty chicken halves.  Friday and Saturday are prep days for salads and the like.

Cold here, though - mid-teens for the most part.

Peace be with you. 30 and clear in Carolina at sunrise, headed for 67 later and 78 tomorrow.

Nothing interesting on the wireless, so I will probably hit the rack again I have been spending my days pursuing history documentaries on YouTube. I never realized how much stuff is available! It keeps me out of trouble anyway.

Everyone stay and warm.

BOC - way back when - I used to go fishing at this lake while the Driver played golf on their course.  I would take my chair, pole and tackle box and then try not to step on any of the geese that would nap on the flat that I wanted to sit on.  Lots of 'em!  Little closer than I cared to be to them, but they ignored me and I was very careful where I stepped.  They were all Canadians and well-mannered.  But had an encounter with a big white one that wasn't so nice!  Hissy-fit!

Last day of spring.  Going out for all day  - lunch and then nap @ said park.

Life is good!

BOC - we are just about as far inland as you can get - maybe just a few more inches north and west.

I have a good friend in San Diego area and when I would visit her, would spend a lot of time watching the seagulls and pelicans.  I told her we had both back here and she wouldn't believe me.  I don't think I ever convinced her.  But we do have an occasional white pelican and lots of seagulls.  Sat and watched the seagulls yesterday. Go figure

Have heard loons in Minnesota and like our song birds - they would be very loud up that close.  A single cardinal here yells at another cardinal two blocks north of here and you can hear both of them loud and clear!  Over a very busy street, no less!

Happy Saturday to all.  Taking a break from helping my sis-in-law get ready for Allie Cat's 4th b-day party.  Starting time is 4 p.m. edt.  She's gone to store to get last minute things, esp. plastic plates, cups, napkins, and pick up hot dogs and one person has requested burgers.  Brother is working until 7 p.m., so maybe everyone will be gone when he gets home.  Preparing for 10 kids + grownups.

If I don't make it back in, pizzas for tonight are in the freezer, labeled and ready to take out and put in the oven.

Everyone take care, have a good weekend and see you all later.
