Hardly have been outside, Johnny. Sounds like I leave and you folks warm up....Hope it follows me east.

Kinda nice looking at mountains in all directions - appears that we go home and then head east by Sunday by more conventional means.

It's tough to sort out ones stash when cleaning one area means you have to clean another so you have a place to put it...

Not that I'm a pack-rat, but there is stuff in my life I want to keep, at least for now.  Deciding to trash something (or simply give it away) can be a real challenge to the psyche.

We're with you on that, Larry.  Right now Pat has begun packing some of the stuff in her sewing room, which will be demolished in a month or so.  And after that is replaced with a much larger room (about 2 1/2 times the space) for sewing and computer purposes, the poor gal will be deprived of the kitchen for a few weeks.  My dungeon will be affected, too, because we'll be using an old window well to put heat and utilities into the new room, and we will somehow need access to the new crawl space.

Larry, as to pack-rats, Ricki said that two pack-rats should never marry. However, when she said that , it was too late.

I have been finding things that I had forgotten about--and things that I never knew that we had. There has been at least one box of things that went from Boise to Reform, Alabama, to here--and it has gone to our church, along with many other things, for a sale in May. One not-so-easy decision was what books I knew that I would never read; I do not know how many I will have to get rid of because I will no longer have the shelves to store them on (no place to put some of the shelves that we have been using) (we ran out of floor space for bookshelves, so I put a couple of shelves up close to the ceiling, and we still had some books unshelved). I also have many phonograph records which I do not think that I will ever play--some are 78 rpm records that moved from Memphis to New York City to Boise to Reform to here. That there is a station that plays classical music most of the time, and it has been possible to hear classical music by way of television here really retired the records except when a particular composition was desired.

Railroadiana? It all moves with me.

I had a pleasant surprise today.  Maybe someone can tell me if this is something special or the norm.

We took Millie (the 2002 Buick) into the dealership for her usual oil, lube, check up and also had a bulb that was burned out in the back window, replaced.  Had the door on passenger's side adjusted - it was rubbing something -  and a bubble bath after all that.

Total bill was $60.  That seemed very reasonable to me, but I am comparing this with years ago @ gas stations and fast lube places.  In this day and age of gouge and overcharge, can anyone help me out with this?

And they threw in a hysterical right turn signal that we didn't notice until almost home. She goes back tomorrow so they can adjust it so it doesn't beat itself to death!

Just tell Driver to stop waving to everyone.  That'll cure the right turn signal issue...  Stick out tongue

(You have to be old enough to remember hand signals for turning to get that one...)

Hi J....just saw your post on hysterical turn signal comment....If you mean it blinks rapidly,  more so than normal, it probably means a front or rear turn signal bulb is not working....If it's a rear bulb....that means one stoplight is not functioning either....

Q - Driver said there was something screwed up or they did something when they changed the bulb in the back window.  It was working fine when we went in there.  Will let everyone know as soon as they figure it out.  And it will all be part of the $60, to boot!

I do like the rapidly blinking turn signal better than the former quiescent turn signal when one of the bulbs is burnt out; at least one (hopefully, the rear one) is still working.

As to $60, I recently paid about $40.00 to have one turn signal bulb replaced; the car was washed, but that certainly is an expensive carwash, since the inside was not swept.

Johnny - the bill said the bulb was about $2 and they did everything inside except put out clean towels!

Their dealership seems to have a lot of the seasoned citizens of Lincoln and they do buy cars.  So I think they keep them coming in to the dealership and give you coffee and let you sit snugged up right next to the showroom.

Car dealers are very competitive in that area, so I think they keep up their customer base by almost carrying you in and out of there.  There was an elderly lady sitting at a sales desk - she had a whole line of young admirers while she was signing papers.  And a very nice looking smaller SUV was pushed off the showroom floor and out the door shortly before she left.  I admire her choice!

A lot of dealerships have learned that the one major thing that will create new customers, and keep repeat customers coming back is service.

Bought my Challenger from Helfman Dodge, got 3 years free oil changes tossed in, (yes, really free, I read the fine print in the sales documents, they didn’t sneak it in) along with a 3 year total warranty, after that, engine drivetrain lifetime limited warranty with a $100.00 deductible.

I put the  warranty to work a few week ago, the engine service light popped on, so I whipped into the dealer, figuring it was some computer issue, this car is completely run by computers, almost fly by wire.

The plugged it in, did a diagnostic, and informed me the #2 fuel injector had failed.

I am figuring a good chunk of change there, plus a rental car while they fix it…surprise, they had it in the finished lane by the time the service rep had explained it to me…my total cost, labor/parts and diagnostic was $100.00.

I have since called a parts wholesale auto parts distributer, that injector sells wholesale for $45.00, so retail should have the part alone close to $135.00.

Total time in the dealership was just over an hour, they also managed to run the car through their car wash, and vacuum it out.

Oil changes for that thing take 7 quarts of Mobil 1 synthetic or the equivalent, which retails at $10.00 a quart…they charged me $58.00 for an oil change after the 3 free years ran out, plus filled all the normal fluids, checked the battery, rotated the tires, and last time replaced a little O-ring in the transmission that had a recall.

Aimee had an old 99 Durango, had to hold the gear shift up to get the ignition key to turn to start it, she just happened to go by the same dealer for some body work on it, punks had pried the passenger door and popped the lock to steal what they though was a I Pod, (her blood sugar meter in its case is about the same size, and was laying on the seat)…while they had her Durango in the body shop, they replaced the neutral safety switch in the steering column which was causing the key issue, no charge. The body shop manager said he figured Aimee wanted to keep the Durango, because she was investing in having the body work done, even though it was an older truck with lots of miles, and he figured she would like to be able to start it without a hassle.

Because of the way these folks have treated us, so far we have purchased a 2009 Hemi Challenger, a 2009 Ram Crew Cab Hemi Pickup truck, and a 2008 Nitro SUV from them, and when my youngest is ready to dive in 2 years, I will go back and buy a Dart from them, simply because they have gone the extra mile to make sure we are happy with their service.

For the $60.00 Mookie paid, she got a good deal…shop labor is normally $42.00 to $48.00 an hour, and a center stop light for a Buick books out at the basic 1 hour, the oil change books out at ½ an hour, plus the cost of the oil and filter and the bulb.  She basically paid for the labor, and got the parts free.

You are right, Ed.  Labor was 39.95 - rest was oil and bulb and yes, they did rotate the tires.

We bought this car out of Omaha, but will probably buy our next one thru them.

Good service nowdays is so rare.  Standards have dropped so low that people accept bad service as just a part of doing business.  We won't patronize places that greet you with "Hi Guys!".  I hate that.  And I have corrected some servers, especially young men, that "guys" is inappropriate.  Everything is so expensive today - courtesy is free and should be a big part of the entire experience, always!

Now I am plotting how to go back to dealership using only left turns!  Smile, Wink & Grin

I usually go to the local outlet of a larger dealer group.  They know who I am and never give me a hassle.  The place where I bought the truck had the free oil change deal, but it was in Niagara Falls, so by the time I got home, it'd be time for the next change...

I took my previous truck back to the dealer where I bought it for the state inspection the year after I bought it.  They "found" $1300 worth of work that "needed" to be done before it would pass.

Instead, I took it to a local dealer who passed it with no problems whatsoever.  I won't go back to the other dealer ever again.  They must have thought they had a sucker on the line.

1 turn signal bulb; no charge; glad to take care of it for you.  And about 3 people tested it before we got it and then again when we were ready to go.

Thumbs Up

Turn signal flashers have always been made to flash three bulbs - front and rear signals and the light on the speedo.  If one burns out, the flasher is supposed to act funky - so you know you have a problem.

The other reason for hyperflashing turn signals is extra bulbs - like when someone hooks up trailer lights without first installing a heavy duty flasher.

Getting used to new digital rodent.  This one is tail-less.  Seems to be working well, if a bit sensitive.

When I bought a new laptop last summer, it came with a tail-less rodent. It is nice not having to worry about getting a tail tangled with anything--but I too often fail to turn it off when through using it for a time, and I have to make sure that I am pointing it right since it does not have that guide hanging out to tell me which is the top.

I had thought that the younger generation is thoroughly up on the latest advances, but my younger daughter was surprised to see it; she did not know that such existed.

If two of your turn signal bulbs are burnt out, does the flasher go three times as fast?Smile

Johnny - this is our first really "newer" car, so we weren't aware that instead of a steady light, it flashed so hard it made me nervous.

But what does go 3 times faster is the dealership when they are correcting the problem!

Afternoon all.  I got back late last night after spending a week in Albuquerque.  I was lucky enough to have made it in to Albuquerque before the big storm hit last Sunday night.  The city itself only got a couple inches of snow, but there sure was a lot of wind.  I-40 was closed right at the interchange where my hotel was located.  There were semi's EVERYWHERE.  The interstate was closed all the way into Oklahoma that Sunday night (the 24th), and did not reopen until mid-morning Wednesday (the27th).

Glad to be back in nice warm San Antonio, where the temp is 67.  Cowboy

Back to Shreveport tomorrow.

Enjoy your Saturday!

NY railfans are wondering if (nay, hoping) the IT heritage loco will make it all the way here.  I think it's headed for Albany.

Just a little snow overnight, and the occasional flurry today.  Overall, winter seems to be winding down nicely.  We'll see if the next system ("Saturn") does anything out of the ordinary.

Unexpected snow flurry activity this morning....At least to me.  Was to be sunny and dry today, and thought I'd get my car out for a bit of running..{to church}, but we have overcast {bright}, and snow flurry activity.

So, we'll be traveling in my little trusty truck...and then to Sunday meal.  And back to check in on Nascar at times....A bit below freeszing here this morning with just a skiff of the white stuff on the ground from overnight.

Ventured into a new cell system last evening....{internet}, and now we'll wait and see in a couple days, if I can learn to master it.....What does a retired fellow like me need that for....The only thing I was attempting to do was a better program, and now, with it we'll be {trying}, to use a touch screen, smart phone....We'll see....

Wishing all a good new week going forward.

Larry, hope they get to see that unit. Here in the Louisville area, several of the NS Heritage units have been through here on the St. Louis-Danville, Ky line. Even living 2 blocks away from the NS tracks, I've never had enough advance warning to go grab any pics.[I did manage to get a pic. of the Erie Heritage unit in Oct.]

(edit) apparently one day this past week a Union Pacific Heritage unit came through here, the unit that is painted for the Southern Pacific in "Daylight Colors".) definitely missed that one........

Very rudely awakened about 0515 this morning by a very large "POP"!, not an explosion to me. Caused me to look out of my front window and see a very large column of flames to the west of my house-next street over. About 0530 house is fully engulfed, F.D. just arriving on scene. Have found out it was a fatal fire, lady living there didn't make it out. Friend of ours, came over to St. Georges for produce and would stop by the house and chat for awhile. Never a good way to start a day.

Snow Flurries here now, about 31 degrees, supposed to get to about 38 today.

For all, but mainly for Quentin and others that have asked about the Big 4 Bridge here, it opened as a ped./bicycle walkway about the middle of Jan. I've not had a chance to get up there yet. It's been too cold, or insert any excuse you want........Smile, Wink & Grin
