All the nasty stuff is staying down along the PA/NY border, with a possible tornado in Elmira. We will probably see more rain overnight (a good thing) but they don't have us in the high threat area.
The folks in the NYC Metro area are battening down the hatches, though. Per TWC, the utilities are calling people in and the parks are making campers leave.

On the railroad yesterday shooting video (got several...) Beautiful day - not too hot but plenty sunny.
Woke up about 4 AM to sound of rain outside - about 3/10" before it quit. It's raining again now, and the 24 hour total so far is just over 6/10". Methinks the early rain was just the ticket - might have opened the ground up a bit so what we're getting now soaks in just that much better.
We need it - although not as bad as some. We're about 2" behind so far and lawns look like it, not to mention some crops (this being a heavily ag area).
Kinda puts the kaibosh on stuff like painting outside, though.
Back on the railroad for the weekend.

Got out of the house yesterday and went with my wife and sons to the lake. Felt good first time I've been out in a while. It was hot and windy.
In spite of a burn ban at the lake everyone got burned!!

Supper is a repeat of the lunch menu: just don't have the energy to do much of anything today. Desserts: ice cream and Dutch apple pie, chocolate cake, brownies and cherry cobbler.
Think our high made it to 102, can't really remember what I heard on the 6 p.m. news/weather report. I do know that the heat index is between 105 and 114. We do have a breeze outside at times, but it is 1 heck of a hot breeze.

BOC: I love Alliance NE. We stayed there one night on our way to Chadron - and our motel window offered a view of the trains about a block away. I stayed up all night just to watch the train action. If I lived there I would have a chair parked as close as I could and would spend my days getting very sunburned!
40% chance of rain, which means 60% chance we will get to watch it go east into Iowa and drown that state. But cooler - high 90's. Really a normal summer, albeit a little dry. Daughter's birthday is 7/24 and when she was very small, it didn't rain from just before her birthday until after Labor Day.
Even our heat hasn't set any records. Maybe the "intensity" level is higher - since we live our lives in air conditioning
Now if we can just quit burning down what little scenic area we have in our flatwater state.

Good Wednesday morning all. 80 degrees here in Louisville, going for a high of 101 degrees this afternoon, which is the all time high for this date. Heat index will be in the 105 - 110 degree range. We did get some rain, but not for very long; Walt and I were sitting out on the porch, and all of a sudden, it was pouring down so hard, it seemed like hail hitting the awning: no hail, just the heavy rain. After it finished raining, Walt checked the rain gauge, and it only had a little tiny bit of water in it. We could have a slight chance of some more rain/storms this afternoon, early evening, but a little better chance for tomorrow morning and Friday morning.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go, including Gatorade, lemonade, iced teas, and ice cold cans of soft drinks. Wishing I had some Dr. Pepper!! And breakfast is ready and on the breakfast bar.

We have hostas out front - north side- and height of house keeps it shady all day. Hostas planted under a big tree. It's not the shade or the lack of water - the nursery man on the radio sez that any water that goes on the plants is sucked up by the tree - big always wins!
The only thing that should be planted around a tree is peanuts - for the squirrels.
Kearney NE - about 150 miles west of us. Gets weather from Mudchicken. Kearney and North Platte are both really being cooked. And north of us up around the Niobrara River - they are having range fires - not on the scale of Colorado, but big enough. Started by lightning, so guess it is bit of housekeeping.
I have come to realize that someone can sneeze and our prices will go up. All our beef raised here goes east. And we have some of the best beef in the nation. Hope New York has been enjoying it. Corn-fed: no water, no corn, no beef. Wonder if Turner Ranch is selling off bison?

And international news too. There was a story earlier today about this drought, and it mentioned a place called Kearney, NE where it said the auction mart there was selling cattle off at three times last years volume, because the ranchers couldn't afford to continue feeding them. And of course, when there is that much more supply than demand, they weren't getting good prices at all. But it could be worse, it said Oklahoma City stock yards were selling off cattle at four times last years volume. The beef from this round of sales should hit stores in a glut around Nov. and Dec. which will mean a short term price drop, followed by a spike because there will be a diminished follow on supply.
The weather here though has been cloudy and cool lately. 63° right now. It has been raining much more to the west of us. Authorities are saying anyone driving out to BC should pack enough supplies to spend two nights on the road, because the ground above the highway is so saturated that even one more thundershower could trigger mudslides. I've never heard them say that before during summer. That sort of recommendation is usually only heard during winter months.
Then there was this headline; "Heavy Rains and Flooding Have Turned the Interior of BC Into a Mosquito Free-For-All". Now doesn't that just sound like fun!
At this point, I don;t see any reports that CP has been impacted by this weather.

Lunch is on the cooler bar: cold cut sandwiches (bologna, cheese, ham, turkey, roast beef, salomi, etc., with lettuce, mayo (or whipped salad dressing), sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese, sliced onion, whatever you'd like on your sandwiches (white, whole wheat, and rye breads).
For dessert:
Chocolate cake, Dutch apple pie, peach cobbler and all the ice cream you can eat!!
We are already at 90+ degrees, and I know the heat index has got to be over 100! The only nice thing is, we have a fairly decent breeze (at least in the shade of the front yard, as the sun hasn't come over the house yet).
At Produce this morning, we had some sprinkles, but that's about the size of it. And according to the weather report I heard at noon, the storms may be rolling in an hour earlier this afternoon. And speaking of produce, here is what was on the truck this morning: potatoes, cabbage, cucumbers, zuchinni, romaine lettuce hearts and tomatoes. We had a whopping 74+ customers this morning. We haven't had that many in a long time.

.....Flashes of light woke me about 4 this morning....Wondered at first, as I wasn't hearing thunder, but eventually...it was there too.
Sounded somewhat severe....So I figured, finally we're really getting one of these "here and there" weather systems hitting us and we'll finally get a good shot of rain.
But....as I looked out to the back yard as I opened the verticals and saw some minor leaves / branches on the patio.....but upon checking the rain gauge....just a half inch of rain with all that {wind?}, and electrical, crashing thunder that seemed rather close.
But we'll gladly take the half inch of rain...Muggy this morning. And if the sun makes it out....I suppose more heat.

Ms Mook - The throttle stays pretty well polished most of the week. We give the poor thing Mondays and Tuesdays off.
A few bumps and rumbles here last night as I ate dinner in the back yard. In fact, I had to finish my dessert in the house, lest I get wet. The rain amounted to squat, however - I think there were still dry spots in my driveway when it was over. Areas to the north and east were under watches and did get more rain. We're due for some limited relief tonight.
Gotta got help a friend get smarter than his "smart phone" this morning.

Good Tuesday morning all. Going to be another HOT day: it is currently 81 degrees, going for a high of 96-98, with heat index in the 100 - 104 range. Best chance of any moisture (as in storms): between 4 and 10 p.m. The morning meterologist described the day as "uglier than ugly".
Coffee, juices, Gatorade, lemonade, iced water, iced teas ( sweetened and unsweetened), and anything else nonalcoholic that is cold, is fresh and ready to go. On the breakfast bar this morning: BLTs, or you can have bacon, scrambled eggs, cantaloupe, watermelon or other melons, or plain cold cereal w/milk and toast.
Everyone have a good morning, remember to stay hydrated, keep as cool as possible, and I'll see you after I get through with Tuesday Produce. That shouldn't take too long, unless the truck goes back on its late schedule, since there won't be a Bread Truck today.
OK, here is the recipe for the brownies:
1 ea 15.5 can black beans, rinsed and drained
3 eggs
3 tsp vegetable oil
1/3 cup cocoa powder
1 pinch salt
1.5 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup white sugar
3 tsp Stevia
1 tsp instant coffee
1/2 cup chocolate chips or crushed nuts, optional
preheat oven to 350 deg
place ingredients in blender and blend until smooth
pour into baking dish
sprinkle optional ingredients over top
heat for app 30 min or until dry on top and edges start to pull from pan
enjoy

Tom, I'd be interested in that recipe myself! Been busy in my kitchen here at home, boiling chicken, and mixing up my dumpling dough, rolling the dough out and slicing it into strips. Now, it is in the freezer, and when I get ready to make the dumplings, all I have to do is drop them into the cream of chicken soup. I know I have stood up too long, as my feet are killing me, they're aching so badly.
I've been too busy to even look at our thermometer, and can't even remember what I heard on the noon news; so I have no idea what our current temp/h.i./humidity levels are right now.
For our lunch/supper here in the Cafe/Diner, here is the menu:
1. Beef strogaunoff (sp?), garden salad, green sweet peas w/diced carrots, and home baked dinner rolls.
2. Chicken & dumplings w/any of the above mentioned side dishes.
3. Pork Chops w/baked potatoes and any of the above named side dishes.
Dessert:
1. Chocolate cake w/chocolate icing
2. Homemade brownies (some iced, some w/no icing)
3. Dutch apple pie
And, of course, any flavor ice cream your heart desires (most of it is home made ice cream: like vanilla, chocolate, peach, strawberry and even blueberry).

In the news last week someone dropped the ball on Amtrak service here. I was expecting the Texas Eagle to start service this week instead of rolling thru.
checked our local weather just now - 103-104 for today, thru Wed. Humidity is dropping (31%), but the real jaw-dropper was UV index - HIGH - 9. But no snow!
