All the Adirondack leaf peepers got a mixed bag this weekend - the colors were at peak, but it was cloudy and today (Sunday) drizzly all day.

Still we had lots and lots of riders and they all seemed to enjoy the "show."

It's funny, though.  One crowd will be quite gregarious - taking lots of pictures and asking lots of questions.  Another will be relatively quiet, just sitting back and taking in the ride and the scenery.

We did have a problem with some slick rail.  Wet rail and leaves turn the rail into a "skating rink."  When that happens, it doesn't take much of a grade to stall a train.

Home for now, with a full week of things to do, then back on the railroad next weekend.

I, too, appreciated Ed Benton's comments.

As for myself, I came home yesterday after spending 13 weeks either in a hospital or a skilled nursing facility (which brought me from needing help to get out of bed to being able to live by myself). I am now seriously considering moving to be close to both of my wife's daughters (to ease their minds) instead of being about 14-15 miles away from either one of them.

BOC, I understand your relief at having finished the chemotherapy; six years ago, I was almost through with my course which, even though it did not affect my hair, left me extremely weak. The worst part of my treatment was the radiation which had little immediate effect, but the delayed damage is part of the cause of extended abscence from home. I hope you did not need radiation treatment.

Re Ed Benton.  He is kind of a little outspoken as a truck driver.  As a former OTR driver myself I did try to keep track of where he was posting.

I do not know why but he has been pulled from the list of forum users.

Thx Ian

I just heard in another thread about Ed Benton being put off the forum.  I enjoyed his take on railroads from a trucker's point of view.  When railroads were trying something new with their diesels, Ed could relate the problems that truckers had trying something similar.  I appreciate the time he once took to explain to me the finer points of diesel engines.  He will be missed.

Joe - will take Matt for a few days.  Have lots and lots of things to make disappear!  He will be tired when he gets back....

Things aren't exactly booming in the yard, but they have sure changed things around.  Freight used to skirt the yard for the most part, but now seems to be going right thru it.  So much more interesting to watch than the usual coal.

Saw my smoking 9 - see diesel smoke thread.  This wasn't quite as bad, but still - really burnt the toast on that one!

We are having a delightful fall.  80 day/40 nite humidity yesterday was 15%.  I don't ever remember it being that low.  Practicing to be the future AZ.  They could call us Nebraz!

Won our football game last nite.  I have no nails left.  Wisconsin was a hard opponent.  And game was 7ish, so many of the younger generation were pretty well either unintelligible or silent before the game (according to my police scanner).  City looks a little tilted this morning.....

I did my usual Sunday morning 6:30a grocery run!  I was the only customer car in the lot and only female shopper in the store between 6:45 and 7:30.  That's why I go then!  Driver just groans and rolls over.  But I am dressed and ready for the rest of the day!  Guess that is now.

Quentin...A portable hard drive connected by USB is definately the way to go.  My wife has one on her computer where she places all her geneology research, old family photos etc.

No power adapter necessary...just plug it in to your computer tower and she fires up when you fire up your computer.

And should anything happen to your computer...simply disconnect the portable drive and you can move it to a replacement computer.

Hope this helps.

Murray:

That's exactly what my computer repair fellow explained to me this week.  I had my unit in to add RAM, and he asked me if I had backup on it....And I told him I never addressed that issue, but it is now time to be doing so.  Lots of photos, and some I can not replace.....

He showed me one there in his shop, and it was just pretty small....perhaps small book size and connected via USB only, and completely automatic.  So, soon we'll be doing so.

Thanks for the thoughts.

We have about 4 of those in 2Tb units...reason? All kinds of music apps...VST's and suchlike...

Good Sunday morning all.  Nice and pleasant here, with a current temp of 56 degrees, going for a high again today of 74, with plenty of sunshine.

Going to have to save up and get a flat screen TV.  Or else put it on my Christmas Wish List.

Coffee,  juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  And on the breakfast/warmer bar this morning:  an early trip to the bakery:  doughnuts, danish, blueberry and chocolate muffins & caramel pecan rolls.

Everyone enjoy your morning, take care going to work, Church, railfanning, or whatever else you have planned for this morning.  See you all this afternoon.

I have thousands of pictures on this computer. For a back-up I bought 16gb Sandisk thumb drives. Barbara keeps one drive at her house. The newer flat screen televisions have a USB port.  I can show visitors pics of a recent outing or event, on their TV or mine. Just an idea.

....Spokyone......I like that thought / idea....That would really allow one to "see" his images.  Believe my flat screens do have a USB port....At least the one in the family room....

Thanks, Joe, for taking care of things this morning.  I just couldn't seem to get moving this morning.  Took going back to bed around 8:30 or so, and then re-awakening.  Now, I'm in the process of doing more laundry (things that we have dirtied up this week.    And thanks for setting out the pizza crusts.  I'll be starting to assemble the pizzas in about 2 1/2, 3 hours from now, so they'll all be ready.  I love that oven Dan got for the Cafe/Diner a couple of years ago!!  And speaking of Dan, are you still around here anymore?????

Rain is just about gone from our area, but still cloudy and overcast.  Maybe we'll see a little bit of sunshine, but probably not too much.  Still calling for a high of 75, though.

Our Friday Fish Fry is now underway:

FISH:  Bass, catfish, cod, flounder, haddock, halibut, perch, whitefish, jumbo butterfly shrimp, popcorn shrimp and Tilapia

SIDE DISHES:  Baked beans, cole slaw, corn on the cob, cornbread, mac & cheese, fries, hush puppies, deep fried breaded mushrooms and deep fried onion rings

DESSERTS:  Chocolate cake w/chocolate icing, yellow cake w/caramel icing, apple, peach, strawberry and pecan pies, blackberry & cherry cobblers

Hope everyone enjoys their afternoon and meal, take care and see you all later.

Good Morning all...Fog, but promise of sunshine later.  Hope so, want to do a mowing.  Mild temps today.

Have a question for anyone in the Diner:  I'm trying {again}, to update my Avatar, and going thru the process as I perform the last to "Upload and use image", my response is "Error on last request"....Any thoughts...?

And Larry, read your suggestions on "backup".  I'm looking for a small back up module connected via USB cable only...No other power connection, and completely automatic.  My computer repair fellow showed me one when I had this unit in to add RAM....it was small...{paper back booksize}...and he mentioned I could find one at one of our local outlets...Staples, etc....Need to do so soon.

Good Friday morning all.  67 degrees here in Louisville this morning, with  a little bit of rain.  Going for a high of 75 today.  Rain should be out of here completely by noon or a little after.  Hope everyone found the meat loaf, etc., last night, since I did not make it back in.  Just too much going on around here.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is also ready and on the warmer serving bar.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and see you all later.  Mook:  still excited over there in Lincoln land?

Q - One and two terabyte external drives are relatively inexpensive these days.  Most come with a bundled back-up program.  Just make sure whatever back-up program you use will be available a couple of computers from now.

If you have the time, you could simply create a folder on the external drive and drag all your image files into it.  Then you don't have to worry about encryption and compression algorithms.

Getting packed up for a weekend on the railroad.  Starting on Lake Placid on Friday, then down to Thendara for Saturday and Sunday.  Word has it the colors are peak in the Old Forge area right now.

I don't usually work the Lake Placid trips, but I have our "show kit" and need to get it up to them for a show this weekend in Massena.

......Back on line.  Just reconnected this maching after having more RAM installed.  Much better....Boy, what a world here without a computer.

Now next project is to find appropriate "back up unit" for this machine.  Never have addressed that.  Photos on here that can't be replaced.

Warm here today.

Joe - I will have to go check one of our storage tracks.  They can store quite a few coal gons in that area and did so for some time a few years back.

Finally got over my sinus problems.  Haven't had a hard, long freeze yet, but being very careful not to have windows open too long or overnite.  Use ceiling fans instead.

Had window open right after true dark last nite and it was quiet in the neighborhood. I heard a funny cry - like a small child, except it was too late for small child.  Listened closer and it was a female screech owl.  (higher pitch call)

You that live in rural areas and smaller towns will think "so what",   We have fox, raccoon, badgers & wild turkeys.  Again, so what.  But I bet yours don't wear little coveralls and carry tiny lunch pails.  Cool

I am excited!  Maybe we will have owlets someday - to go with our mouselets that I am sure we have - just not in the house.  (D-con on guard.)

Feeling a little like Rangerette Rick this morning!  ^~^

Good Thursday morning all.  Temp is about the same as yesterday morning, with some drizzles/mists of rain.  Should see a high of 77 again this afternoon.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  And breakfast is ready and on the breakfast-warmer bar.

Hope everyone has a good morning, afternoon.  Hopefully, things will be a little slower around here today and I can get back in later.  If not, there is freshly made meat loaf, beans and mashed taters 2/gravy in the fridge.  Everyone take care, keep safe and see you all later.

Joe - wish they would have taken off the porch before they set the fire.  I would love to have a porch like that!

But would have to sit on back parking slab since we don't actually have much of a front or back porch.  Make it a gazebo?
