.....I believe humidity is the important word here today....along with what I saw last evening projected for heat today...It's 86 plus here before 10:30.  They are talking high 90s several days this week.

No Chocolate????

Coffee beans would be ok, but since I can get jangled on one cup of coffee (black), I would probably be unstoppable on a brownie of coffee beans!  Coffee

Peace be with you. 77 and clear, headed for 96 and thunder later this afternoon.

Paula, speaking of brownies, the wife has a tasty recipe for some made without flour and/or chocolate. Instead, it uses black beans and coffee. It sure is different....

Nuff fer now. Everyone take care and stay cool.

Good Monday morning all.  78 degrees here in Louisville, going for 94 degrees again this afternoon, with a slight chance of rain.  But at least, so far, the humidity is still down, so not too bad outside.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  On the breakfast bar this morning:  bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, cantaloupe, kiwi, papaya, made from scratch buttermilk biscuits w/sausage gravy, bagels and bear claws.

Hope everyone had a good weekend.  Also hope you have a good morning, take care, keep as cool as possible, stay hydrated, and I'll see you all later.

Larry;

Sounds like a great three days, with one particularly more so!  Whistling  You hate it when something like that happens. About 12-15 years ago the Company I was with at that time, had a bad one in a construction zone north of Knoxville,Tn.  A State DOT crew stopped to handle a small problem, failed to put the warning signs far enough back, and not nearly the required warning signs. The southbound truck came around a curve and was into the back up immediately, The carnage was awful, several fatalities.

My bet is inattentive driving; due to some cause like fatigue, or trying to look for something in the cab.  Fatigue coupled with a Micro-Nap is a real cause in many cases you described.  Sigh

As I said, earlier, the soul aches for those who lost their lives, and their grieving families.

about 2230 her and all is quiet in the aftermath of another scorching day. 00+ Temps are predicted here through the week-end. Slow orders on the Transcon, so they are pushing them through tonight.

Looking forward to coffee and a couple of scrambled in the AM.  Night All !

Back from three days on the railroad - two as conductor and one at the throttle.  Guess which one was most fun...

Sam - The incident occured in a construction zone.  With the heightened awareness of construction zone dynamics around here (a DOT worker was killed in a work zone incident in the southern tier a few years ago), I have to believe that appropriate signage was in place.  Once the investigation is complete, we may find out more details.

Even if signage wasn't correct, methinks the driver is culpable simply because he didn't reduce speed for a hazard.  On a two-lane road such as that, the stopped cars could have just as easily been backed up behind someone waiting to turn left into a driveway.

Time to finish unloading the residue of the weekend and call it a night.  Later!

Good afternoon. It has been a beautiful day here today. Currently 75° and sunny.

Outside my place there has been a Sun and Salsa Street Festival going on all day today. There was a Karaoke stage set up and it has been fun listening to all of the singers. I thought a few of them might have required medical attention when they hit such sour notes, but a good time seemed to be had by all.

CW, a cheeseburger with fries sounds great.

Afternoon all.  Didn't get home until after 2 p.m. this afternoon.  After Church, had to make a run to the grocery, for a couple of brownie mixes that I need to fix next Saturday, to take with me next Sunday morning:  we're having a Mass in the Grass in the one of the local parks next Sunday, so everyone is taking something that doesn't need to be refrigerated.  Heard one of the ladies say that she'll bring a couple of pizzas.  Hope someone is remembering d-r-i-n-k-s!

For our Sunday Dinner, here is the menu:

1.  BLTs w/garden salad & fries

2.  Cheesy tuna casserole

3.  Hamburgers/cheeseburgers w/garden salad and fries

4.  Grilled pork chops w/broccoli casserole, salad, corn on the cob  and/or baked beans

Haven't seen/looked at current temp, but I can tell you that, even with less humidity today, it is very, very warm outside.  Everyone enjoy your evening, take care and see you all either later tonight, or in the morning.

This one is for Adrianspeeder!

A couple of links to the stories:

http://kathrynaviationnews.com/?p=70268

and this one with videos:

http://www.nycaviation.com/2012/07/video-military-c-17-cargo-aircraft-mistakenly-lands-at-tiny-airport/#.UAwBU6DfLoE

The above link contains a video of a C-17 Globemaster aircraft landing at the Peter O.Knight airport in the Tampa area. It was supposed to land at MacDill AFB. but some how it put down at the Knight Airport (3405 ft runway!)   That aircraft weighs about 282 K when empty. Not exactly your regular business/private plane on such a short landing. It was said in another article that the nose wheel was within 10 feet of the end of the runway and the grass.

Crew and 42 passengers were ok, but you can bet there was a 'shorts' exchange after that landing. Mischief  This is right up there with the C-130 that landed on the Navy Aircraft Carries some years back- That was an 'official' experiment, to see if it could be done.

Not only did it land there, but later took off from that same runway( with a fresh crew), and then landed across the bay at MacDill AFB [where there is an 11,000ft runway.]

Weather is quite the problem around here Temps at 100 to 105 Deg range, according to the Weather Service until next Sunday.  Ha a down pour that lasted about 5 minutes and drove the Humidity right out of the top of normal. It was Mississippi Delta Humid here in South Central Kansas. Creek behind the house has almost dried up, the Catfish are walking the turtles from one hole to the next, looking for water!

Kids came through on their way back from their South Texas Vacation, yesterday morning.  We fed them pretty good. Carla fixed Crapes with fresh strawberry fillings, along with sausage, bacon and eggs, big plate of hot biscuits with her freshly made crabapple jelly.  They ate hearty, slept a couple of hours, and took off for S.E. Kansas.

Everybody stay cool on this Sunday.

....Not really any new news here on my end, but good morning to all.

First look at the in / out showed me 72 degrees a bit earlier.  Forecasters noted yesterday we will head for 96.  The clouds are now breaking up as I look out my east window.  So, soon the sun will assist to do the warming.

In about 2 hrs., we'll head to church, then a bit later Sunday meal with niece / nephew someplace....Our reg. Sunday routine, which helps me.

Must drive the car to church, as it hasn't been moved since last Sunday.  It's just 10 miles round trip....About a 12 min. drive one way.

A bit of green is peeking up over the yard from the little bit of rain we've had this past week...Total of about 1.25"...Very little considering how much we need.  Now down over 9" from normal.  Sure hope it recovers.

Did get a report from back home from sis in law...in Pennsylvania, 200 people furloughed at a local Coal Co.  And I wonder if that will effect the unit coal trains in the home area that were bringing out coal on a refurbished branch...just a few years ago.

Understand the coal was being exported to Russia.  Maybe I'll learn more.  I know exports of coal to Europe has been a sourse for our coal in many places.

Good Sunday morning all.  71 degrees here in Louisville this morning, going for a high of 93 degrees this afternoon.  Supposed to be warming up very quickly, and for the next few days (most of the week), at least a 30% chance of showers/storms.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is also ready and on the breakfast bar.

Everyone have a good morning, take care going to Church, work, railfanning, or whatever you'll be doing this morning.  See you all later this afternoon.

87 degrees here in Louisville at 6:17 p.m.  Not sure if that is the high, as I haven't heard the weather report yet.

Since we've not seen much traffic in here today, our Saturday Night Pizza Fest won't have the whole 9 pizzas on it tonight.  Here is the lineup:

1.  Cheese

2.  Goetta

3.  Hawaiian

4.  Ham & green pepper

5.  Pepperoni/mushroom

6.  Supreme

Desserts:  Ice cream, your choice of apple or peach cobbler, yellow cake w/chocolate icing and strawberry/rhubarb pie.

Hope all have had a very good day and will have a good evening.  Take care, and see you all in the morning.

....Where is the "traffic''......?

Quiet day here.  Not so stifling hot today and yesterday, but according to forecasters, it's coming back.  Nice sunshine and blue sky.

Quiet in here too...except, I have XM playing out in the family room so it's not so extra quiet......

Good morning and peace be with you. 77 and cloudy in Carolina. headed for 93 and the obligatory thunder and a few showers.

I am sitting here watching my puppies eat breakfast and thanking G-D for peace and safety whilst so many others mourn the events of the past few days. In these last days, such events have become so widespread and common that they hardly shock us much anymore. These are the beginnings of sorrows. Can the end be far away?

Everyone take care and try to stay cool.

Good Saturday morning all.  Joe, thanks for coming in early and taking care of breakfast.

It is going to be a beautiful day around here.  The temp is 67 degrees F. this morning, going for a high of about 89 degrees.  Lower humidity for the next few days, too.

Have been listening on the news this morning, the 911 tapes from yesterday in Colorado.  I will be praying for all those people for a long time to come.

Everyone have a good day, enjoy whatever you'll be doing/going and see you all this evening.

Larry;

Your heart has to go out to the families of the folks killed and injured. An accident  like this sometimes defies description until it is re-inacted in an official reconstruction. Which, with the number of fatalities, you can bet it will be.

Warring signage and their distances placed from the points of construction ( set by Federal Statutes) . Absolutely, the driver will be checked for compliance with specimens taken from him. The computer from his truck will be checked for its pertinent information, and you can bet his log books was confiscated immediately, and checked for compliance by DOT qualified officers.

If the signage is correct and the driver is in compliance(?). Inattention might be a cause, it could be anything from looking for something in the cab, lighting a cigarette, to a micro-nap ( fatigue(?). One thing, for certain, the authorities, and lawyers( for an against) will be all over this incident, til blame is place and liabilities established. My 2 Cents

As I said at first, one's heart goes out to those involved, and those who lost their lives in this tragic accident.

Bruce....interesting stuff in your post....When I hear "Roll Out The Barrel", I have a vision of a bar...{us kids were alowed to step inside to buy ice cream}, it was located in the bottom floor of  The Hite House....a hotel, in my small home town over in Pennsylvania back about 1939-40 with the rumblings of War in Europe.....But that music would come pouring out in the Summertime...

Lots of ethnic groups in the area, as there was a lot of coal mined in the area.  That brought lots of immigrants back in the early 20th and earlier century.  In a city 20 miles north of there, Johnstown, the place is full of beautiful designed churches...designs brought over from Europe.

{Item}, I rather think if you entered "The Hite House" in a search engine....you just might pull up data on it....Famous route 30 highway was our main st. in town until 1938, when a new 7 mile by pass took the highway around town....By the way, that would be "Stoystown, Pa".  And the hotel was a stopping place for traveliers.

Funny how certain incidents stick in our minds for life....

Yes, Prayers for all the families involved in the terrible incident in Co.

Good evening.

70° and mostly cloudy, but all in all not a bad day to be outside.

I just wanted to express my sorrow regarding the terrible incident at Aurora, CO. When I looked at my favourite local news site, it was very disconcerting to see the photo of the shooter that had been released by U of CO. Not the crazed manic you would have expected, even though he acted like one. I can't tell you how many times I have read of Aurora, CO in Classic Trains and TRAINS, and it seemed like an interesting place, with some RR history, but now it is going to forever have this bad memory attached.

Was up to see my Mom at the seniors place today, and we talked abut the Bassano Station move I mentioned over in the Lounge. Mom grew up east of there at Rosemary and Duchess, AB. She had been to Bassano countless times and mentioned the Station Agent I mentioned in my second post about it in the Lounge. And of course, no mention of Bassano would be complete without her remembering her school being bused over there to see H.M. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth when they passed through there on their Royal Tour train in 1939. It left quite an impression on a kid who grew up on a farm in the 1930's.

While I was there, the centre had an Ice Cream Social, complete with a banjo player all dressed up in a vest and straw hat. I've had the song "Roll Out The Barrel" rattling around in my head ever since, which is kind of weird this far into the 21st Century. I guess the classics never grow old.

Prayers to the folks affected in Colorado.

Bruce

At 3:48 p.m., we are at 89 degrees, and getting rain:  it was really pouring down a few minutes ago.  Just heard a clap of thunder, too.  So very sad to hear of the tragedy out in Colorado.  People can't be safe in a movie theater, even.

Did make it to the library today, and got 1 book for Walt to read (new Baldacci book on the 7 day list), and some books for myself to read.

Our Friday Fish Fry is now on the warmer bar, and now under way.  All the regular kinds of fish, side dishes and desserts.

Everyone, please take care, have a safe, good afternoon/evening and see you all later.
