Almost, but just shy of yesterday's temp.  This afternoon we had 96.1

Just checked a few minutes ago...about 7:30 and it was still 92.

Partly sunny all day....Slight chance of some rain overnight.  We actually need rain.

Ah - back from three days on the railroad.  Actually went down on Friday to help put the station back together (they painted the walls, requiring re-hanging of many historical pictures and items) and open up the camp car.

Ran as conductor on Saturday and Sunday, with newbies and trainees both days.  Things went well though.

Only supposed to do one run on Sunday (by mid-afternoon on Memorial Day, most folks are headed for home), but ended up having to do some switching to put a different car in the regular consist.  The "new" car was several deep on the storage track and we had to run around it before we could put it on...

For us, three hours of switching is unusual (go ahead, laugh, Ed).  Even better, it was over 80F, and we were using an F (air conditioning consists of open windows and doors).  On the other hand, I was engineer and got some practice with something we don't often do.

Time to crash in my own bed....   zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Good Tuesday morning all.  Not staying around too long, as we are getting thunder & lightning.  Current temp is 77 degrees, going for a high in the mid 80s later this afternoon.  Everything is ready:  morning drinks and breakfast.  Gotta go, see you all this afternoon.

Good afternoon everyone. Not too bad of a day here, partly cloudy and 66° with a chance of a thundershower later.

Mom has been in her new place for a week now, and she is adjusting well. The powers that be still can't get their act together and get her phone number moved to the new address, but that is about all of the moving foolishness left to deal with.

Quentin, I hope Jean is doing well. The first half of the Indy was fairly uneventful wasn't it. It was shaping up to be a nice Sunday afternoon drive at 220 mph!Surprise It was unfortunate that cautions came into play and affect the final outcome. I for one, was very curious to see if those engines could have stood up to that almost record setting heat had they been able to continue racing under the green flag. I did enjoy the race.

Still no more news about the CP strike, but at the moment the news channels are all in a bit of a lather about someone sending a human foot to the business office of the ruling Conservative Party in Ottawa. I guess some nutbar realized security might be less tight there, than at the Parliament Building. This isn't going to help make the legislative process go any faster. It does seem to take all kinds, doesn't it?

I have at last caught up with all my email that came while I was on a fifteen day trip to cover what I had missed on my shortened trip last month. I packed hurredly, and did not put the power supply for my laptop into the laptop case--so I was not able to make much use of the computer.

My trip was certainly not as long as Carl's and Pat's (reported on the Trackside Lounge), but it was refreshing, both by rail (Salt Lake-Chicago-Washington-Atlanta (rent a car)-New Orleans-Chicago-Salt Lake) and by car. My niece and her husband drove up from Orange Park, Florida and spent the night in Macon, Georgia, so I would not have to drive down to see them. I visited a seminary classmate in Savannah, and then saw several people in South Carolina (Tom and his wife were not feeling good, so I did not see them). In Florence, I visited the sister of one of my 4th-12th grade classmates, and two other friends drove over from Columbia to see me.; we had a pleasant time during lunch and most of the afternoon. Then, it was off to my home county, to eat lunch with the classmate and his wife. I had missed my college alumni gathering, but I had hoped to see my history professor (the only remaining faculty/administration member from my time there, but he was out of town. It was pleasant, driving through the Carolinas, eastern Tennessee, and NE Georgia, and I rehoned my mountain driving skills in several places (20 mph hairpin curves and so forth).

I was able to have sleeping accomodations for each leg of the rail trip, which made it possible for me to rest my bottom during the day after sitting.

While I was gone, daughter Katie made the arrangements for the surgery that should make a more normal way of life for me possible.

We have had cool weather here, lows in the forties and highs in the seventies.

Good Wednesday morning everyone.  Wow!  What a day we had yesterday.  After the deluge of rain stopped, Walt poured out 3.1 inches of water from our rain gauge; some areas got up to 4 inches.  But around the main U of L campus, they recorded 5 to 7 inches in some of the  buildings, and most of the streets in and around the campus was closed due to high water, and cars stuck in all that water.

After I finally got home from Produce at 11:45, I got myself a little something to eat, and fell asleep for about 2 and a half hours.   Was literally exhausted.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer/cooler bar, including some fresh watermelon that I brought home from Produce yesterday.

Promise you all that I will make it back in this afternoon, after I get back home from our next to last VBS planning meeting.  Not sure if we'll start setting things up today, but know we'll definitely be working   our behinds off Saturday, after we get through through with the special class:  going to be over that all day Saturday.

Just saw some news that we lost Ed Murphy (Ed's OJ) in the last few days.  Even though I never got the chance to do some Railfanning with Ed down in Mexico I considered him a friend and will be missed.  My thoughts to Fran and family.

Darren, my condolences to the family.

Well, we ended up putting in about 5 hours in over at the gym today, starting to get things wound up in all the prep work for VBS next week.  One good thing, we actually got  a good dinner/lunch out of it today:  one of the organizers, went to KFC and bought chicken pot pies for everyone, along with drinks.  This took the place of the chips that we've usually been having on Wednesdays.

Here's the menu for the rest of the afternoon/evening here in the Cafe:

1.  Mexican:  tacos, burritos and Spanish rice

2.  Chinese (Asian):  Beef, pork, vegetable, chicken sand special fried rice, egg rolls, sweet & sour pork, Moo Goo Gai Pan

3.  Italian:  Spaghetti w/your choice of meat balls or meat sauce, garden salad and Italian bread sticks

Believe our current temp is in the low 70s.  Could have been higher earlier, but sun went in behind cloud cover, so things cooled off a little bit.  Sun is back out in full force now, so temps could rise some in the next 2, 3 hours.  Everyone have a great afternoon, whats left of it, and have a good evening.

Whew, what a relief. The Weather gadget on my computer desktop was malfunctioning most of the day and was only showing the temperature. Where the local conditions were supposed to be shown, there was only blank space. I thought Chicken Little was right and the sky had fallen! Now it tells me it is partly cloudy and 61°.

I hope everything is alright with Quentin and Jean. It is almost 48 hours since his last post here.

Everything is alright here, although the CP strike hasn't ended yet.

CW, I think I will enjoy an Italian Dinner.Dinner

Good morning and peace be with you. 67 and sunny in Carolina, headed for HOT. 92 sez the prognosticators. Think I shall stay inside for the forseeable future

Having survived Beryl, we got right at 2 inches of rain. There was a tornado in the southern part of the state, small damage and no injuries.

Everyone take care, stay safe and cool.

Good Thursday morning all.  Beautiful morning out, with a temp in the low 60s, I think, is what I've heard this morning.  A little cool, but that is all right.  We are under a slight risk for some hail, winds and heavy rain later on this afternoon,  continuing through tonight.

Bruce, you're right:  Quentin hasn't posted for a couple of days.  Hope everything is all right up in their neck of the woods, with him and Jean.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages  are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer/cooler bar (yeah, some more fresh fruit included this morning, including some watermelon chunks).

You all have a good morning, take care and see you all later this afternoon.

Gee, we've been awfully slow in here this morning and early afternoon.   I've gotten the warmer/cooler bar cleared of breakfast, and gotten things straightened up.  Have even done several things around the house in the past 45 minutes to an hour.  Things that have needed to be done, gone through, and either pitched into the trash bin or recycle bin.  Gathered up a couple of old calendars, some 33 1/3 record albums and a few 45 records, that will going over to the  Community Center with me Saturday morning.  Also going to be going upstairs in a little bit, and going through Walt's any my dresser drawers for old t-shirts to take with me Saturday:  The kids will be making "T-shirt tote bags" one  night next week in BS, so going to donate to the cause.

Beginning to cloud up a bit, so I'm glad I was able to get several things done around the house, before this weather changes in the next little bit.

Joe, Matt put in 1 day more than Jefferson Co., KY did:  yesterday was the last day of school for JCPS.

Here is our menu for the rest of the afternoon and tonight:

1.  Sloppy joes w/fries and garden salad

2.  Leftover Italian spaghetti, garden salad and Italian bread sticks

You all take care, have a good afternoon, and hopefully, I'll see you all later.

Well it is a nice day to end a railway strike (CPR). 66° and partly cloudy, with a bit of a breeze.

Tomorrow I am going over to Mom's new place and we are going to go through all of Mom's magazines and other mail to get the info on changing her address. Then I will bring it home and get on the internet and get it done. Should be an improvement over sending change of address cards.

I see Quentin hasn't been by again today. I am a bit concerned.

CW, I think I will have the Sloppy Joes tonight.

After high 70's and low 80's for the past few days, high 60's today seems almost cold....

A message from the Forum Fire Brigade (we have several current and former firefighters here, in case you didn't know) -

The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) have fired up a new website on smoke detectors

The new wisdom is that one detector on each living level isn't enough.  A decent sized home could require over a half dozen to truly adequately warn a home's occupants.

With today's "built to burn" toothpick and cardboard construction, the (maybe) three minute warning you get with smoke detectors under the old wisdom may not be enough.  The website opines that with additional detectors you could get upwards of ten minutes to escape.

The price of smoke detectors is such these days that having several around the house won't break the bank.

I wandered off and got lost....

Been a little busy, so will be brief.

Quentin's Jean dropped me a note yesterday - (I think )- she seems to be doing ok.  Think Quentin is quietly recuperating, too!  Thumbs Up

Tree - 800 sq feet and 3 smoke detectors.  House built like a missle silo, so feel pretty safe.  Plus I can see the firehouse from our window/door/porch/lawn....I feel pretty safe, but with all the fires in Lincoln lately, they do go up fast!  And.... they are expensive matchboxes, too!

I think it made it to 61 today - briefly - with a strong north wind.  But this too shall change - like tomorrow!  One fall day in the month of May!

Back to busy!

Sorry to our good friends on here for not getting on here as much lately.

Just as we're getting Jean on a good recovery path, we have another situation occured across the street.

Short explanation:

Elderly neighbors {Ball State Un. retired professors},

No family. Both in stages of Alzheimers....and we and another neighbor have been trying to get social service help for a year plus.

Now, Betty has died.

Priviate people....Conditions terrible....

So we've been trying to help ex {daughter in law}, closest person to them....and it's a non controlled situation up to this point.

Part of the reason I've not been here as much.

So, in the midst of all that is going on in your life, all the problems you and Jean face, you take the time and put forth the effort to help others...

And I keep telling my daughters that there are good people out there no matter what the news says...I guess I was right after all!

Sometimes things like that put it all into perspective.

Quentin, I am sorry to hear about your neighbor. It is sad to hear about such people who have nobody to look in on them. I have one sister-in-law (in her mid-eighties) who lives by herself (in eastern West Virginia), and her son (who lives near Chicago) told me last week (I was between trains in Chicago, and he came in to see me; Carl missed out on the visit since he and Pat are gallivanting about the country) that she has short-term memory problems, but has no one looking in on her. She does have a sister-in-law about ten miles from her, but I do not think that she visits often.

Two of my sisters-in-law are more blessed. One (ninety-two this year) lives somewhat independently, though afflicted with macular degeneration, in a wonderful retirement place in Baton Rouge where medical care is almost instantly available. Her daughter, who lives near Jacksonville goes over regularly to spend several days at a time, and her son, who lives in Shreveport also visits her from time to time. The other one lives in a retirement place in Birmingham, and her son (also in Birmingham) is able to visit her. A fourth sister-in-law lives in southwest Virginia (one daughter lives in Washington, D. C.; the other daughter lives near Austin, Texas) and is in better health than the first three. She did not talk about her social life when Ricki and I visited her two years ago, but I believe that she does not have such worries about help if she needs it.

As for me, both of Ricki's daughters live about 13-14 miles from me, and they are ready to help if I need it.

Quentin, I am glad to hear that Jean is continuing to improve, and may she regain her full health and strength soon.

Good Friday morning all.  We have gotten rain most of last night.  Started out as semi-heavy rain and wind, ended up just being a fairly steady rain.  Think it has just about moved on eastward, so we should be starting to dry out later on this morning.  Temps this morning are in the upper 50s to about 60; and it isn't going to get much warmer than maybe 65 for a high this afternoon.

Mookie, glad to see you have found your way home!

Quentin, you and Jean are two very blessed people, and to be in the midst of Jean's recovery, to be able to lend a helping hand to a neighbor is outstanding.  I applaud you both.  Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Coffee, juice and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Warmer bar has been cleared/cleaned and scrubbed, and fresh food is now on it for breakfast.

Everyone have a good day, take care, and hopefully, after I get bills paid, and some groceries in, I'll be back later this afternoon.

TGIF Railfans!

It's 57F and heading quickly into the 80's today.  Started to do some Layout Concepts for my "N Scale" train room from different perspectives as the MOH and I have yet to 100% agree of easement limits.  As for the "HO Scale" project it's still just a dream without walls but the MOH is coming around that the easement limits for it are way to small and "maybe" I might get another or expanded  location in a few years. Well, back to work...
