Good Monday morning all.  Cloudy, have had a little bit of rain here in the western part of the county, but most of the rainfall is in the eastern part, and heading eastward.  But very humid out; temps are in the upper 60s, low 70s, supposed to get in the low to mid 80s, I think, for our high today.  Still have a chance of some more rain today.  Guess I'll try to get my walk in, in a couple of hours, then return home and get some laundry done during the afternoon.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast of bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, and toast are on the warmer bar.  Cantaloupe,  watermelon balls and other fruits are in the cooler.

As far as blackberries and blueberries go, I don't particularly care for either one.  Give me strawberries, cherries, peaches, apples and pears, and I'm happy.  And Johnny, just for you, Mookie and anyone else, rhubarb pies and strawberry/rhubard cobbler is on this afternoon's dessert menu.

Everyone have a good day, take care and see you all later.

Hi Randy!  We thought a bear might have nabbed you!

B23-7 - The Driver always had a special affection for them.  Why I don't know, but he was always happy to find one.  See them no more here.  Think there might be one east of us - closer to the IA/MO border on a short line.

I will be face down in the strawberry/rhubarb cobbler.  Soooo good!

Good Morning Railfans!

*Choke* *Cough* *Choke*

Yep, another major wildfire is loose the smoke has been pouring into the cities up and down the front range.  What started out as a 2 Acre fire is now 20,000 taking out homes and other structures in it's path.  It's mainly the winds that are driving this beast in all sorts of directions.

On a happy note, Lisa and I got out on Saturday to do some more Railfanning and I got photos of a few more stations plus other RR equipment.  My Travel Blog got updated on Sunday so you can take a peak at out Saturday RRAdventures trip.

LC could probably cry on Randy's shoulder about troubles w/ B23-7s...except he's more worried about bailing water in the swamp right now.

I could certainly be a shoulder to cry on concerning B-23-7s. When they work they work well , when they don't its a good thing to have a bottle of vodka handy ( I think the locomotives were desingned on a bar napkin).

Personally the B-23 is one of my favorites, locomotives spend most of thier lifetime in idle so the little 12 cyl FDL saves a lot of fuel in the long run.

Tell LC to give me a ring when his water issues are resolved , I can make short work of the locomotive issues.

Mookie, we have 7 B23-7s here and a bunch of C-30-7s

CW, just stopping by for a quick coffee now.

Back in steam days when my Dad was working at the top of the Continental Divide at Stephen, BC, he had to go out with the coal bucket for more coal for the station stove. It was just barely daylight and there was no porch lights because there was no electricity. He opened the door of the coal shed and a bear was looking right back at him. He quietly closed the door and proceeded to set some sort of Olympic running record back into the station.

Another time a train had to layover in the siding one night because of some problem further down the line. They were waiting to get down through the Spiral Tunnels and the end of the trip at Field. But it looked like it was going to take a long time yet, so the tail end crew decided to cook a full breakfast. Things were going well until a bear could smell the bacon and eggs and simply walked into one end of the caboose looking for his meal. At this point Dad could hear terrible yelling and hollering and looked out the window of the station to see the whole crew evacuating the caboose from the other end, and none of them used the steps!

The bear, seemingly put off by this lack of hospitality destroyed the interior of the caboose. They finally rode it down to Field, but it was so badly damaged that it had to be deadheaded back to Calgary for repairs. No bears or RR employees were harmed during the preceding incidents.

I will be back for Rhubarb Pie later.

I have come to the conclusion that LC could get a few pretty new motors here in the yard.  They don't seem to be using them quite as much as previously, so a huge garage sale may be coming....

Hello Randy!!  Nice to see that you stopped by!  Very glad to see ya in here, and hope you'll come back in soon!  I am enjoying reading the 'bear exploits' shared in here today.  Just so long as I don't see one, that is fine by me.  If a bear shows up in our neighborhood, I'll be wondering what happened over at the Louisville Zoo, for one of their bears to show up all the in the West End of Louisville.

Got Sunday Dinner Meatloaf leftovers on the warmer bar, along with the pies and cobblers I mentioned this morning.  Also got walk in, and laundry done.  Then, took a nap.  Now I'm on the puter, as Mookie says, and getting a few things done on here.  Although, I still need to download my VBS pictures, and and get them ready to print out, so the Church has a copy for their scrapbook/photo album.

Everyone have a good evening, take care and see you all in the morning.

I holler every nite about no local news on tv; live in a city of about 255K and there never seems to be any news (my police scanner sez different).  So got tired of the local cactus/bunny report and switched to Omaha.

After the daily announcement of the latest shooting in North Omaha, we visited the Henry Doorly Zoo and I found out that sea lions are born not knowing how to swim.  That would be comparable to today's child born w/o a phone stuck in their hands.  How do they survive!  Guess Mom (sorry Dad) has to teach them how to swim!

Then!!!!!  Saw UP 844 coming into Omaha for the College World Series.  Never left mah puter seat and got to not only see it arrive but heard it, too.  Fantastic!

Millie was excited, too - she didn't have to make the 120 mile round trip to go to Omaha!

I am putting in a request for pineapple upside down cake.  Delish!

We have a similar situation here in Muncie.  It's a Caddy with the big fins, sticking out of a business place wall facing a 4 lane business street here.  Just from the rear window back.  Believe it's about a 1959.  Maybe a '60.

Evening everyone. I am back for some Rhubarb Pie.

This talk of rhubarb reminded me of a strange book about gardening and railway stations in western Canada called "Forgotten Gardens, Abandoned Landscapes & Remarkable Restorations", by Shirley Harris. I was hooked when I read a back cover quote that said in part  "a few evergreens, a disheveled hedge of caraganas and lilacs and a mystery as to why they exist in these peculiar spots". I immediately added rhubarb plants, and I knew exactly what the author was talking about.

Drive along any rural road in the prairie provinces that parallels an existing or abandoned RR ROW, and you will see these spots which were former station sites or Section Men's house yards. You needed to be sure where you wanted to plant caraganas, lilacs and rhubarb, because about the only way to kill them off when you are done with them is by using some sort of thermo-nuclear device!

I spoke with one woman who lives in a bedroom community east of Calgary who told me that the locals are catching on to where long abandoned farmhouses once stood, and they are now going out and getting fresh rhubarb there. I like looking at places like that as you can really let your imagination go.

The book is definitely more of a gardening book than a railway history book, but I still liked it. Ladies and gentlemen, enjoy your pie.

Thanks for the rhubarb pie, Paula. It is a refreshing dessert, indeed.

We are gradually moving into warm days, but the nights are still in the fifties. Maybe real lae spring will be here by the first day of summer.

Peace be with you. Well, our Thunderchickens did it again and advanced to the College World Series for the third year in a row. The last two years, they went and won the thing!! Lessee what happens this time.

We had an all day rain event and allegedly got 1.37 inches.  The next two days are supposedly repeats of today, so the rain deficit should be closing.

The wife and I are still under the weather. She spent most of the day in bed, and has done so for the past two or three weeks Seems we only get out to see the doctor or chiropractor.

A new goal on the wireless: I am trying to talk to and confirm contacts in each county in the U S. So far, I have app 620 of the app 3700 so far! That looks like a long term project!!

Everyone take care and stay safe.

Good Tuesday morning all.  70 degrees here in Louisville this morning, with patchy fog.  Supposed to get to about 85 degrees today, with a cold front moving in.  High tomorrow is to only be 81 degrees.  But 90 for highs on Saturday and Sunday.

Johnny, you're very welcome.  Whenever you all tell me there is something you'd like to have in here, I try to get it right away for you all.  Glad you all enjoyed the pie.

Tom, sorry to hear that you and wife are under the weather.  Hope you both are feeling better very soon.

Bruce, my Mama and Daddy grew rhubarb on our farm, along with my preferred fruits.  I never could acquire a taste for it, though.  But I'll fix it in here for all of you to enjoy.

Mookie, baking some pineapple upside down cakes right now.  They'll be ready and cooling by the time I head over for Tuesday Produce at 8 a.m.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh  and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and see you all this afternoon.

Good Morning Railfans!

It's 58F and clear heading up to the low 80's.

FIRE NEWS:  Sadly this thing is still growing; now over 41,000 acres and sadly 1 death is now reported - Linda Steadman, 62, died in the blaze / She lived at 9123 Old Flowers Road.  I have not seen the updated map get posted yet but I have heard from folks at CSU say they can see the flames now from within Ft. Collins itself now so it's closing in on the western edge of the city.  I believe this is now officially the the 3rd largest fire in Colorado history...

Here is a different map from yesterday that shows how close it is getting to Ft. Collins now

You are very welcome, Mookie!!  Almost wish I had taken a few slices of pineapple upside down cake over to Produce with me this morning:  I'd have crammed them into several mouths, whose 'owners' decided to take over and run things this morning (before the lady in charge arrived, I might add).  One idiot told me to start calling names, and we didn't have enough bags made up, for me to even  think about starting to call people up.  I was being kept busy, just signing people in:  by the time we finished, we had served 75 or 76 people this morning.  Haven't had that kind of number in a long while.

Have set out some cold cuts and other sandwich fixings on the 'cooler' bar for lunch.  Will be back in later, to start our Mexican Fiesta.  Take care, everyone, and enjoy your afternoon.

Whistling Darren,  here in the mtns.  ( Yavipai co.)  we just got our fire almost out finally in Crown King. Mop up crews  are working now.  So now fire crews are moving on to another fire. maybe in your area?  I saw where a DC 10 fire bomber has been called out. That bomber can drop retardant a path  100 yrds wide for a mile.  If it comes there it will be at  Denver Intntl.   A fire that big  would  need a lot of resources , plus  planes from Canada  ( 2).   Hoping you folks won't be in harms way.

                                                       Respectfully, Cannonball

Pineapple upsidedown cake! Yumm!Thumbs UpThumbs Up The mention reminds me of one night my freshman year at college. A little background: six or seven of us regularly sat at one of the two tables waited by a particular student, who made sure we had enough to eat; after I had finished my small dish of dessert, she would often bring me a soup bowl full of it. One night, when pineapple upsidedown cake was the dessert, for some reason, I was full by the time the bowl arrived; I was not going to let it go to waste, so I did something that no one was supposed to do (unless it was taking a meal to a student who was unable to get to the dining hall)--I took the bowlful to my room, and finished it later (and sneaked the empty bowl back into the dining hall). One night after supper, this waitress asked me if my father had been a millionaire. I confess I did eat a lot, but I did not gain weight; working on the Building & Ground Crew 12 hours a week (@ $.60 an hour) did wonders in rearranging my weight.

Still chilly nights and warm days here--and no rain for two weeks.

Here is our Tuesday Mexican Fiesta menu for tonight:

1.  Tacos (build your own:  we have the newer flat bottom taco shells, where you can put your taco seasoned meat in, and add whatever other ingredients you wish to have):  lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, onion, etc.

2.  Burritos:  beef, beef & bean and beef enchilada style

3.  Spanish rice

4.  Chimichangas

5.  Fajitatas

6.  Mesquite grilled steaks and pork chops

Plus, we have the usual tortilla chips w/your choice of salsa, picante sauce or con queso dips.

For Dessert:

1.  rhubarb pie

2.  strawberry/rhubarb cobbler

3.  pineapple upside down cake

And we also have plenty of ice cream (whatever flavor you want) to go on of to the side of any of the above listed desserts.

I and the other people I worked with last week at our VBS are so glad we had ours last week, and have it over with.  This week, the Baptist Church across the street from our house, has theirs going on, from 6 until 8:30.  I've been procrastinating downloading all the pictures I took last week.  Need to get my fanny in gear, and get them downloaded, and then print them out, so the Church Warden can have them to put into the Church's scrapbook/photo album.

Everyone have a good evening, take care, and Joe, hopefully, you all will get some much needed gentle rainfall up in Northwest Ohio soon.  I also think they could use some gentle rainfall out in Denver and New Mexico, to help put out the wildfires.  No thunder and lightning, to exasperate their current situations.

One of these days I'll figure out how my mother decided I liked strawberry rhubarb pie.  I must have been being polite.

Pinapple upside down cake, on the other hand, I'll take.

Bumps and rumbles here.  Came out of a meeting to discover oncoming black clouds, so drove over to the shores of the St Lawrence to watch it come in.  Measured a 36.1 MPH gust before the heavy rain arrived.  Home now, with some continuing bumps and rumbles, but it looks like it'll subside soon.

Headed to Turning Stone casino tomorrow for the first day of the NYS Fire Chiefs expo.  All seminars tomorrow.  The displays and vendors open up on Thursday.  I'll have to watch my pocketbook.  It's just all too tempting...

Good Wednesday morning all.  Beautiful day, with plenty of sunshine, and hardly any chance of any rain for the rest of the week.  May have a slight chance of a stray pop up, but that's about it.  Current temp is in the low 60s, with a slight, cool breeze.  Supposed to get up to about 80, 81 degrees later this afternoon.

Randy, even though I've not been in the 'able to hire people' position, I feel for you.  When I worked at KMart, we were always told, that if someone asked about  filling out an application, we could get them an app to fill out, but also tell them that we weren't hiring at that time.  Most of the people would go ahead and fill one out and turn it back in, just on the off chance of a position opening up.  The rest would make a snide comment or few, curse us out, then walk out the door in a huff.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the serving station.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and if anyone has anything they'd like to see on the menu today, just let me know.

Good Morning Railfans!

It's 59F and clear heading towards 90 today - YUK!

Fire News:  Over 43,000 acres burned and 2,600 evacuation notices issued so far.  As of this morning that are saying they have 10% containment  but could be awhile before they can get this beast circled.  Over 600 Fire Fighters on the ground with fantastic Air Support including 10 Tanker Bombers!

Hmm, been kind of quiet in here this afternoon.  Went to grocery, and stocked on some meats, etc.

For supper/dinner tonight:

1.  Grilled chicken w/your choice of mashed taters w/butter, peas & corn, or baby vegetable medley

2.  Grilled top round steak w/any of the above listed veggies and fresh garden salad

Desserts:

1.  Pineapple upside down cake

2.  Yellow cake w/chocolate icing

3.  Peach or blueberry cobbler

4.  "Death by Chocolate ice cream to add with any of the above 3 desserts (or, you can do like I will, just a bowl of 'Death by Chocolate' ice cream)

Everyone have a very good evening, take care and see you all in the morning.
