cherokee woman Larry, sounds like you are hitting pay dirt on your family's history. WTG! I have tried several times to trace my family's history, but so far, haven't gotten too far. One of these days, I'll try again.

H/H/H today so I'm hiding in the shade and/or A/C when I can. I do have to be outside but that'll be early and late today. I have to get our garage ready for Aedan's birthday party in a couple weeks. I can't believe he's gonna be 3 already.

Good Morning Railfans!
It's 56F and Cloudy; YES! A cool front is pushing in and we are getting a break from the abnormally high temperatures we have been deal with. So, as long as this front does not bring too much Wind / Lightning it could make for a nice day today.
Looks like 3-Green lights for me...
FIRE NEWS:
The main fire (High Park - Neat Ft. Collins) broke containment yesterday near some homes but the Fire Fighters were able to respond quickly so no additional homes were lost. It is still growing (mainly to the West) and we are now at 59,845 acres burned and the Fire Fighters are at 55% containment.
The other major fire (Springer - Near Colorado Springs) is at 1,145 acres burned. 150 homes there have been evacuated but so far so good for them. They are reporting 23% containment

I have the final installment (Day #3) for the Goose Fest 2012 Event now posted on my Travel Blog for all to enjoy. Here is a shot of Rio Grande Southern #6...
Dan!! Welcome back to the fold: was beginning to think you had abandoned us. Those are a couple of great pictures of Aedan and Misty. And you're right: it sure doesn't seem like he about to turn 3 years old! My, how time does fly!!
Darren, thanks for the picture you posted, as well. It is good to hear that no other lives have been lost, and no more home destroyed by the wildfires.
Haven't been feeling too well today: queasy stomach, just not feeling up to par. Didn't even go for my walk this morning.
I have made some salads for supper tonight, and there are also cold cuts on the serving station, with plenty of add-ons for sandwiches. Think that here at home, I may just boil some potatoes, mash them and maybe fix a little bit of milk gravy to put over the mashed taters. Have hardly been out of the house today, and only on the front porch, where is is shady. Hopefully, I'll feel more like myself tomorrow.
Everyone enjoy your evening, take care and keep cool, and keep everything on the rails.

Overnight emergency Colon Surgery for Jean.
Another part of it to occur Fri. about noon.
Caught it just several hours before it could have been fatal......
I give thanks to the Lord we can make this work with a possitive finish.
Quentin
Quentin, I am sorry to hear of further trouble for Jean. We can all be thankful that the situation was discovered before it developed into a far worse situation.

As to genealogy, I have never been interested to the point of doing research myself, but one of my brothers and his wife did quite a bit--and shared the results with the rest of us. One of the shared bits is a chart of the Degge line (that was the name until early in the 1800's) going back to the tme of Henry IV of England. Another one is a book by the wife of a descendant of my great-grandfather, which lists all of her husband's ancestors who lived on the Northern Neck (between the Potomac and Rappahanock rivers) of Virginia. Some of the people are quite interesting, such as the lady's husband's grandfather--he married a cousin of my father; after she died, he married her older sister (who raised her sister's children)--and after she died, he married my aunt!
From the chart and the book, I learned that my great-great-great grandfather, John Degge, married his uncle's granddaughter (thus making her second cousin to her children). Now you know what is wrong with me. They gave their first son the same name as that of one of her brothers--causing confusion to many people doing research and somehow missing John Degge's record (such people have thought that my great-great grandfather was his uncle's son (by an unknown marriage), especially since he was known as "John Tunstall Degge the Younger," even though he was just a few years younger than his uncle.
It can be interesting to learn of our forebears, yet no matter how famous or not they were, we are who we are, and we are not our ancestors or our cousins from way back. I mention cousins, since through my paternal grandfather, my paternal grandmother, a certain man's father and his mother I am both first and second cousin (a few times removed, of course) to this particular Virginian who was born on the Northern Neck and was well-known in his day. He did his thing; I have tried to do my thing.

for her and yourself....we also got you on our church's prayer list as well...
Quentin, sorry to hear of more difficulties for Jean.
One of my Dad's relatives did a genealogy study of the our family, and it seems there might be a bit of a genetic predisposition to railroading.
My great-grandfather worked in what the genealogist, a non-railroader, described as "railroad shops" in Liverpool, Eng. in the 1870's and 1880's. I don't know what RR that would be, but considering Liverpool was the #1 port in England, I suspect the RR infrastructure there must have been extensive. He then came out to Canada and worked in more "railroad shops" in London, ON for a short time. Again I don't know which RR that would be, but maybe when Barry feels better, he could post, and provide an idea. Great-grandfather moved out to Saskatchewan to begin farming in 1892.
Somewhere around 1905-10 two of my Dad's uncles hired themselves and several teams of their horses out to grade the Grand Trunk Pacific, now CN, line coming and through Melville, SK. This is now the CN Winnipeg-Saskatoon-Edmonton mainline.
And finally, when Dad was 18, and working for the Post Office, he started carrying sacks of mail down to the CPR station at Meyronne, SK, and he knew what he wanted to do when he grew up.
61° and partly cloudy again today, but it does seem nicer than that.

Good Thursday morning all. Sun is shining, supposed to get up to about 92, 93 degrees this afternoon, with rain/storms coming in around 7, 8 p.m. tonight. Just came in from the front porch, and you can feel the mugginess. No breeze at all, that I can detect.
Quentin, I'm so sorry that Jean is back in the hospital. Will be continuing to pray for you, her and rest of family, and hope she gets better soon.
On the geneaology front, somewhere around here, should be in Walt's filing cabinet upstairs, there is a history that one of my maternal uncles did on my mother's father's side of the family. Going to have to try to remember to get upstairs and find it. He did it about 20 years ago.
Coffee, juice and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. A light breakfast is on the breakfast bar.
Everyone have a good morning, take care, keep cool and hydrated, and see you all later on.
Currently 58F heading up to the low 80's and the Friday we jump back into the 90's YUK!
FIRE NEWS - Day 12: 68,200 areas and still growing westerly; that's roughly 106.5 Sq Miles
Now the third largest in Colorado history but the most destructive in homes lost. Within the next few days it will likely grow in be the second largest.
And again people....Thanks for all the Prayers. Seems we've needed them recently and quite often. But we're thinking positive, we'll get thru this.
Quentin; prayers headed your way for Jean and for you also.
Respectfully, Cannonball
Y6bs evergreen in my mind
Thanks, Cannonball:
Jean's condition is, she is under sedation, and is stable. This a procedure, in prep for the last phase of the operation tomorrow. Then on to recovery.
This was a Colon operation.
We have 91 degrees at the NWS station at Louisville International Airport, formerly known as Standiford Field. Our indoor/outdoor thermometer is showing 90.3 degrees outside. But we do have a nice little breeze, not too hot, so it is at least bearable to be outside, as long as you're not doing a whole lot. Sitting here right now, at the computer, drinking a little carton of orange juice (and no, there's no vodka in it). Gave that up a long time ago.
Quentin, going to continue praying for you and Jean. Not quite non-stop, but every time I think of you two.
For supper tonight:
1. Salads: Caesar, tossed salad (plain, or you can have it with chicken, turkey , real pieces of bacon (rather than bacon bits), and whatever else you want in your salad
2. Barbecue sandwiches: beef or pork w/fries or tater chips and tossed salad
3. Grilled boneless chicken breasts w/mashed taters w/butter and a baby vegetable medley (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, snap peas)
Desserts:
1. strawberry shortcake
2. homemade banana pudding
3. Mixed fruit Jell-O w/whipped topping
Was supposed to receive my back brace today, but so far, still waiting for the delivery truck (FedEx seems to take their sweet time making deliveries). And I could really use that brace today, as my back is really aching.
Everyone have a good evening, enjoy your dinner/supper, keep as cool as possible and take care.
Good Evening..
Well..we got them ol' t'underin'boomers coming through here...trees down, lines down, neighbours garage blown over, tree on top of it....our back deck that we just put in squashed by big ol' poplar tree fell over...just lovely stuff here...oh...and one 3/4 hour monsoon dumped 4 inches of liquid sunshine on us....
Thank goodness our power has not gone out...yet.
Quentin: Hope she is resting comfortably....

We be up and at 'em today..a few chainsaws already poking at the uprooted trees and such...power was restored late last night to most residences...it was a fun evening here...today? Temperature going up to 77F with no humidity...
As well, I get to go to the hospital for more treatments....yay. Next week the last of the treatments....
Good Friday morning and Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday, dear Joe,Happy Birthday to you! Hope you have a great birthday to day, Joe, and also hope you have many Happy Returns today and always.
Yep, less humidity this morning, with a temp in the low 70s, going to a high around 85 to possibly 88 degrees this afternoon.
Coffee, juice and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. Breakfast of bacon, pancakes (1 stack with a single birthday candle in it), scrambled eggs are ready and on the breakfast bar. Waited until I had Joe's birthday cake iced and decorated, before posting anything.
Quentin, will be saying prayers for you and Jean off and on all day today, especially. (In other words, more than I usually do daily.)
Well, guess it'll be another day waiting for my back brace to be delivered. I even checked with FedEx again yesterday afternoon, and it was stilled listed as being on truck, headed this way. Checked again around 6:30, with the online tracking, same thing.
Everyone take care, have a good morning, and see you all this afternoon.
This Tree is still upright (although the recliner does call from time to time). Might see a sprinkle today - we still need more rain.
Q - My thoughts are with you as well.
On genealogy - my aunts on my mother's side (neither of whom married) did extensive research and documentation of that side of the family, which they carefully bound and presented to many of us for Christmas in 1979. This is proving quite useful as I work my way through the on-line genealogy program - I, too have the same names popping up and having dates to put with the names helps keep them sorted out.
My daughter has similar documentation for my father's side - I'll have that in hand next weekend.
The challenge is to not get overwhelmed by all the "side trips" of distant cousins. Several generations on my father's side had upwards of 10 kids. While the men would have retained the family name, the women would generally have married, bringing a new name into the fold.
In one way, it's a little spooky, as once you get past a few generations, your family may have lost track of the family name(s) of those women, leading to the possibility that you may actually be related to your spouse/significant other, albeit remotely.
Kinda like the two young folks, now married and expecting, to whom I am related both by blood (my father would have been his great uncle, her grandmother is my mother's cousin) and now by marriage. Of course, the two of them aren't related, unless you want to go back to "Adam and Eve..."

Good Evening
All is nice and dry outside..got all the windows open and the cat(s) are now perched on various windowsills here..as to the damage up here...well.....the Poplar which fell over the deck crunched the deck right where the stairs and railing were...and took a chunk out of the awning as well...we did manage to cut it apart earlier this morning and got almost 135 board feet of lumber out of it...friend popped by with portable sawmill to do that job...now I got it sitting in my studio/barn thingee, air dryingOh..and, yes, my insurance will cover expenses..
Spent my afternoon at the hospital doing the chemo thing..
Happy Birthday Joe - you old train watcher! You are off work and probably out bidding on one of the locomotives going by - as a yard decoration!
Have a good birthday! Need to go downstairs and have a spoonful of Haagen-Daz Butter Pecan in your honor!
