That sounds like what happened when the ham radio took a lightning strike.

Reminds me of the morning at Chanute AFB that a storm rolled through before dawn.  I had my CB antenna installed on a pole outside my barracks room.  There was one of those "flash/boom" strikes that you know was really close, and I slowly opened my eyes, fully expecting to see a smoking pile of ashes where the CB radio used to sit.

In actuality, nothing happened to it.   In fact, I still have that radio, although I haven't used it in years.

Weather-wise - very mild.  A few radar echos floating around the area, but none of them have resulted in any precipitation here, yet.

The big OSHA Refresher Training Day that I've been planning for this coming Sunday is looking good.  All of the instructors are ready to go, and I've got nearly 50 people confirmed to attend.

Tom, getting a Amateur Radio license back when I was in my twenties is one thing I regret not doing. It seemed I either had time and no money, or money and no time. I worked with one fellow, VE6 AJM, and knew another from a church group, VE6 JC, back in the '70's and '80's. How hard would it be to see if you ever made contact with those fellows. I would be curious to know.

Our snow is just about all melted, and everything is drying out.  The rain, I think, was over, as I came out of the gym, just before 10 this morning.  Produce truck came really early (don't believe it was 8:30 yet), and, since we only had 26, 28 people, didn't take us long to get everyone taken care of.  And the Bread/Pastry truck came earlier than usual, as well.  I was really glad, since I had all of a sudden came up with a very upset stomach, and was really feeling quite lousy.  Came home and after about 45minutes, went back to bed, and slept for a little over an hour.

Our menu for the rest of today:

1.  Vegetable beef soup w/your choice of cornbread or crackers

2.  Beef stew w/cornbread

Everyone enjoy your afternoon/evening, take care and see you all later.

P>S>  Justin, sounds like you and family are really enjoying your time away from the cold of Indiana.  You all take care, and have a great time.

Wow, Bruce. That sounds like what happened when the ham radio took a lightning strike. Smoke, burning electronics, and flame to the tune of $7000 from the insurance co to replace the damaged stuff. It made the house shake and knocked out two antennas, three rotors, two DSP filters and two transceivers.

Currently, 55 and cloudy in Carolina with rain expected later. We really need that rain, 22" short on the stick so far.

Everyone have a happy Valentine's day and take care.

Happy V-Day everyone.

Too much excitement in the apartment yesterday. I was watching a program I had recorded when a terrific spark emanated from the back of my TV, coupled with a loud snap. At that exact instant I had been looking away from the TV and you could see the flash light up the whole place. The DVR had been acting funny, so at first I thought it was the problem. But then there was that burning ozone smell. I called the phone company and they changed out the DVR and established that my TV is on its' way out. The TV started after the new DVR was hooked up, but the smell came right back

So instead of a 35" Stereo sound model, I am watching a TV I picked up back about 1985 for use in RV's. You could use a 12V Cigarette lighter plug or regular AC. It has a 4" Colour screen and a single monophonic speaker! And obviously not remote control compatible, so I have to get up and adjust the volume with each change of program. This situation can't and won't last for long.

24° with a few clouds right now. It was very cold last night with a light dusting of snow. Just enough to make driving very difficult, according to the service man.

Very sad RR news yesterday. In two separate accidents, two timezones apart, two teenage boys were killed while listening to music and texting at the same time, by trains. One was in Oshawa, ON, and the other was on CP's Calgary-Edmonton line at Leduc, AB. In actual time the incidents were only a couple of hours apart. This has generated all sorts of media and Social Networking activity, to get the word out to young people to be much more careful. They are even directing the kids to look at the US "Operation Lifesaver" site, which I know nothing about. I hope it has some useful suggestions. Very, very sad.

Crying

Afternoon all!

Sitting here in the Condo with the door open to the balcony listening to the waves crash over the beach. Got a cool breeze blowing through the room and life is good. We're looking at a high of 71* today.

Hoping to go out and visit Mobile, Alabama and do some railfanning in Pensacola although it doesn't look so promising. Not many trains go through here anymore...

-Have a swell day all!

Morn'n Railfans!

Day started out with work calling at 6:30A with issues on our Production systems so cut breakfast short and hopped onto the laptop to find and fix the issues.  Not the most enjoyable way to start ones day!

Right now it's 26F and Sunny and trying to remember to pick up a special desert on the way home for a V-Day dinner or you know who will be hurting tonight outside in the dog house!

Cannonball..............The former photo of the 1950 Chevy Deluxe coupe was a vehicle similar to the one I drove.  Ours was a 1949 Chevy 4-door Fleetline and a very similar green.  The last I ever saw it was the night I closed the garage doors and next morning, headed for work with Uncle Sam.  Dad sold it while I was busy helping Uncle Sam.

The current Avatar photo is one identical to my {deceased}, brother's Chevy as the first car purchased when He was discarged from the Service after WWII.  And yes, it's a 1946 Chevy convertible, maroon in color.

The former photo of the '50 Chevy coupe had just 437 miles on it at the time of that photo.  The photo was not mine.

Of course.....A photo with the better half setting on the fender has to be a great one.  Don't let the heels scratch the paint.

Good morning, and Happy Valentine's Day to all of you.  Starting out with a temp around 33, 34 degrees here in Louisville, KY this morning, with a snow/rain mix.  It looks like we have about 1/2 in. of snow in the gravel parking lot, next to our house, and a good dusting in the front yard.  Sidewalks appear to be just wet.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  And  on the warmer bar this morning:

Heart-shaped pancakes w/ whatever kind of jelly/jam/preserves/syrup you would like to have over your pancakes, along with your choice of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and some Valentine heart candy, and a Valentine for each of you who come in today.

Everyone have a very good morning, and I'll see you all later on, after I get through with Produce/Bread, Pastry trucks.

Quentin, it has been cloudy and overcast here in Louisville all day.  And thankfully, no real wind or breeze to put up with.  It made my grocery run a tad better, not having to try to block the wind.

As usual on Mondays, we have Sunday Dinner leftovers for supper tonight.  Everything is heated and on the warmer bar for everyone.

Everyone have a good evening, take care and see you all tomorrow.

Darren, that is a well built looking plow. Many plows I've seen are usually somewhat damaged before they are donated to a museum.

Quentin, nice looking cars you are rolling through your Avatar these last couple of day. Cars from one of my favourite eras. Post '55 cars seem to be more collectable. I like seeing the cars from just a few years earlier.

34° with very light snow here today.

Had a good visit up at my Mom's yesterday. She has always been a political junkie and we have an election in Alberta coming up soon. We have a new Premier who is trying her luck at the polls for the first time. Her party is promising to spend money on things like sailors on shore leave. It is interesting how one of the opposition parties is is using the American style tactic of "no new taxes", and is not really gaining that much traction. But it is going to be interesting to see if they can get more voters to buy into that idea. Historically, Alberta has always been considered the most "American" of the Canadian provinces, but will we continue to be that way. Mom and me certainly had lots of fodder for discussion.

No new RR news.

Bruce

Darren...........That's a mean looking rotary.  Actually looks better than most of the in house, constructed units.

Our Monday morning started {earlier}, with 20 degrees.  That's better than yesterday.  We also have hazzy sun trying to get thru the very bright, light clouding.

Believe we're ok for today.....The weather system is west of us, and the projected 24 hr forward report....didn't show it reaching us.  Not sure if most of it will go north of us, or stall out and fizzle.  It is to get "warmer", later this week...Into the 40s.

Good Morning Railfans!

It's 30F and Partly Cloudy here and once again they are talking about another storm passing through here on Tuesday.  AT least we got some melting which mostly got the ruts cleared on the side streets.  Time for a quick bite and some coffee before starting my 12+ day work week; YUK!  Big IT upgrade project this weekend so it's going to be a long week before my next weekend off.  It's a paycheck...

Hello Americans, it's Monday, and peace be with you. 24 and clear in Carolina, expected to make it to 55 later.

Not a whole lot happened over the weekend. I spent Lincoln's birthday on Facebook, chasing other folk's nature pix, watching train videos, and just goofing off. It was really quite nice for a change.

Everyone take care and stay warm.

Good Monday morning everyone.  Mookie, sounds like what you're to be getting about now, is what we're to be getting somewhere between 7 p.m. tonight, thru 7 a.m. tomorrow.  But ours will be a snow, then a winter mix, then by tomorrow afternoon, rain.  Temps should be above freezing tomorrow, so doubt we'll see more than a dusting around here.  Which suits me just fine.

Got plenty of coffee, hot chocolate, hot water for tea, along with juices and other morning beverages fresh and ready to go.  And a nice, hot breakfast is on the warmer bar.

Everyone have a good morning, take care, and see you all later.

Madam La Mook - I spent a couple of years at Tinker AFB.  One winter, during the week between Christmas and New Years, OKC got hit with a snowstorm yielding over six inches of the white stuff.

Pretty much shut everything down.

Nothing like that here in the north woods today (and it wouldn't shut us down anyhow).  Some light snow overnight, but a few passes with the snow shovel this morning and it's all gone from my driveway.

Edit:  The lake effect belt in Oswego and Onondaga counties is getting a healthy dollop of snow right now - they'll probably see 6+" by morning.

I have to head to Utica one day this week - we'll probably get hit here then.

If you have color radar, it is quite pretty.  The USA looks like a spatter paint print!  Blues, greens, pinks, yellows.... and heavy snow in the panhandle of Texas and OK.

The year I lived in OK, they had 3" of snow for the whole year!  Wonder if they will do that all in one 24 hr period.

Ours is coming - 10pm tonite to 6pm tomorrow.

 Modelcar:

It is a new replacement for the original patio door, installed two seasons ago and really does an excellent job of reflecting cold and heat.

Quentin, if this was my place instead of the landlord's I would have replaced these windows ten years back. Even with our milder recent winters surely the cost of working on the windows would have been recovered in utility costs by now. That wind business is sure a funny thing though. If it had been blowing from only a few degrees either way on the compass, the windows wouldn't have let near as much cold air in. And on February 11 it could have easily been -22° instead of the 22° I mentioned yesterday.

Now I'm off to visit my mother for supper and watch the Junior Men's Curling Championship with her.

Bruce

Understand Bruce.....Especially up in your area, you folks need all the help keeping the warm in...or cold out.  We had this home of ours built so it's up to us to make changes as desired or needed.

When built....Anderson Windowwalls {windows}, were installed.  Of course they are thermopane, double glass, but then I had specially made, storm windows that fit where screens do in the Summer time....So, overall, they have done a good job.

But patio doors can be big heat wasters, so it's really important to select a good one when replacing.

Of course the seals are so much better now on them than back a ways.  And the wood frame so much better over metal in my opinion.

And Paula.....Our afternoon was similar....After church, it was olive Garden....and then back home and Sunday paper and of course a nap.

We {right now}, to my surprise, have 30 degrees.  After a cold start, and still when we went to church it was cold....with a 10 plus mph wind blowing.  I didn't think we were to get to 30 degrees today.

Well, here I am, back from Church, have had a nap, and watched a little bit of TV, and have read a few pages in a book I'm reading.  Now, I'm here on the puter, as Mookie says.

Here's our Sunday Dinner menu:

1.  Meat loaf, mashed taters, gravy, homemade buttermilk biscuits, your choice of green beans, broccoli w/butter sauce, whole kernal corn, and your choice of garden salad or slaw.

2.  Sauerbraten (German beef roast, with any of the above vegetables

Desserts:  Apple cake w/cream cheese frosting; chocolate cake w/chocolate icing, yellow cake w/caramel icing, strawberry, blueberry or peach cobbler and apple dumplings.

Think we've gotten up to about 33, 34 degrees, but with the wind blowing some, it still feels really cold outside.  Everyone take care, enjoy the rest of the afternoon and evening, and see you all tomorrow.

.....Jen...hit that thermostat so it gives you some heat.  Even on the north side of the space....

Our early morning temp here was 14.7 when I first looked.  Bright sunshine now, and appears we'll have quite a bit of it today.

"My La z Boy" is right next to the patio door in the family room, and at that temp this morning, or any morning, and with the verticles open....I'm comfortable.  It is a new replacement for the original patio door, installed two seasons ago and really does an excellent job of reflecting cold and heat.  Of course it's double glass with thick wood framing & seals properly, but with a special coating inside the double glass to help control sun and cold.  Brand:  Jeld Wen

Streets are dry this morning.   No snow overnight.  A bit more possible early in our new week...but warming after that into the 40's.

No Sunday School run this morning, but we will be doing our church run in about an hour.  Then decide where the Sunday meal will be.

Daytona 500 two weeks from today....Time is flying.

Good Sunday morning everyone.  18 degrees here in Louisville this morning, with clear skies.  Hope you all enjoyed the pizzas last night.  Know I sure did.  It is going to be a very cold walk up three doors up to Church this morning.  Guess I'll be having my thermals on under my slacks.  Thick socks on the toes, too!!  Have to them the feet warm. By 5 p.m., should have a temp in the low 30s, probably around 33 degrees, if we're lucky.

Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer bar, including leftover pizzas from last night.

Everyone have a good morning, take care and be bundled up, going to Church, work, rail fanning, or wherever you have to go this morning.  See you all later this afternoon.
