Well, our post Thanksgiving Day here is a pretty nice one. Sunny, and to get very reasonable in temp today.
I really don't care to even mention "black Friday", anymore as it seems to have degraded into massive, crazyness. And greed. Used to look forward to that day. It kind of started the Christmas season....Our usual presence back in Pennsylvania {visiting}, meant the day after Thanksgiving, we'd head to our nearest city, that being Johnstown 20 mi distant, and really have an enjoyable day....
Remember as we'd enter the massive in size, first class department store,,,{Penn Traffic}, in downtown, we were always "pulled" to the cafateria when we'd enter the store and enjoy the ambience and fun of having lunch in such a place. First floor with marble all about, and fragrance from products on display as one entered....The tones of the chimes sounding, calling someone needed at a certain location in the store.
Lots of people, but not the crazyness we're being surrounded with now near shopping locations. This was located right downtown, and with the hussle / bussle of the beginning of the real Christmas season it was certainly a festive atmosphere....A great feeling, and lots of fun.
Beautiful decorations in the city. All kinds of great stores and even "5 & 10" stores spotted along main st. The sound of street cars passing by as one waited to cross the street.
That scene now seems to be out in the malls...with all we're reading about going on, on this day of rush, plastic, and people pushing and shoving to get "their" place in lines, and so on.....
I fully realize times now....are different. Just one of the signs of the times we live in now.....Just my . Guess we can use the power of our memories, and still enjoy an occasional thought back......
Edit...side note: The above store mentioned, always had a beautiful and extravagant, and very large display of model railroading in a large display window out front....and all the trimmings. It was active too....all kinds of things moving. Trains running....overall, displaying a very extensive scene....
It's been rather quiet around here. Wednesday, it looked as though very few leaves were left on the maple, so I muched what were on the ground, and put the lawnmower where the snowthrower had been, and put the snowthrower where I can simply pull it out of the toolshed when it is needed.
Yesterday, we went over to Ricki's older daughter's house for a 3:30 dinner--with a houseful of people there.
This morning, I wore a light jacket when I went out to buy groceries--but I put a winter jacket on when I went for more groceries (today's low was to come this afternoon as a cold front moves in) after watching the LSU Tigers lay their winter supply of hog meat in. That was an interesting game; the Tigers seemd to lay for the Razorbacks, letting them score 14 points before unleashing their powerhouse and scoring 41 to an additional 3. The Hawgs were slaughtered, leaving a stack of hams, shoulders, chops, sausage, and sidemeat in Baton Rouge. Next week--lookout, Dawgs!
Johnny
Johnny, sounds like a lively game. As most of you know, I'm not a football fan; but, I will root for Kentucky, and sometimes Tennessee, and Nebraska, and Texas. It sounds like the weather you're probably getting by now, is what is to be in here in the next couple, three days. The forecast is for rain/snow showers to be in by Sunday, into Monday and Tuesday.
Been a lazy day here at home for Walt and me, although I did venture out, and went to the library: had quite a few more books that have been on Reserve, that came in. So went and picked them up, and returned a couple of Walt's books that he had finished reading. And speaking of Walt, he did help some in the kitchen yesterday. And he did bring an appetite to the table last night.
There's some leftovers warmed up and on the warmer bar/serving station, for anyone who is hungry.
Everyone have a good evening, take care and see you all tomorrow.
Howdy all, haven't been around in awhile. Workin hard into the fourth month of my third deployment.
Still take time for pictures though.
Patch design for our crew I put together and had made. Based it off a song in constant rotation over here that is annoying as all get out, but has a message that fits most any situation.
Anyway, compilation video from so far this trip. Language warning on the song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wazVg4BrbqQ

Good Saturday morning everyone. Adrian, so glad to hear from you! Where are deployed this time? Can't really tell from your pictures here. Great pictures, btw; always enjoy seeing your photos and hearing from you.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. Our Saturday Brunch is also ready and on the warmer/serving bar.
Not too bad outside this morning, as we have a temp of about 53 degrees, supposed to make it up to upper 60s, probably around 67 degrees this afternoon. So you all enjoy your day, and I'll see you all back in here this evening for our pizza fest.

We have another nice day going here....Sunny and mild...{Low 60's}, but a brisk wind.
We'll say hello to Adrian. Sounds like he will remain in the A F for some time.
Believe this is the last of a string of "nice, mild days", for a while. Might see some rain / flurries moving in sometime next week.
So far, the {heating degree days}, seem to be running about normal...Would be satisfied if that continues for the Winter season.
Hi.
This is still the most sane forum (of many different subjects) that I visit. So just had to say hi again.

I'm jealous of that stable of fords...
Chocolate me thinks apple pie with a little warm cheddar on top would be great! Don't like ala mode. Used to give the ala mode to the dog, but now The Driver gets it.

mookie must have sent a message to me because had apple pie at grandmas hosue.our team brought some O but our D was short. They are a young team this year anyway.Cw thanks for the pizza.Tomorrow its church sunday school and back to work at night.Where did the weekend go?
CW, a pepperoni/mushroom pizza sounds good tonight.
36° now, with a high of 52° forecast for tomorrow. Been not too bad lately.
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving Holiday. Sounds like the shopping got a bit tense. There was a headline in one of the Calgary papers that read "Black Friday - Pepper Spray and Shots Fly at Sales". If this keeps up, next year there will be a headline similar to the line in the Credence Clearwater Revival song Travelin' Band, "Someone got excited, had to call the state militia"! Lotsa fun!
No new RR news lately.

Good Sunday morning everyone. Rainy this morning, with a temp of 57 degrees here in Louisville. Will be seeing mostly rain today, heavy, too, at times.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. Breakfast is on the warmer/serving bar: bacon, eggs, sausage, bagels, bear claws and hot cinnamon rolls and blueberry muffins.
Woke up at 4:50, turned over and the next thing I new, it was 7:40. Guess I needed the extra sleep. Good morning for it, too, with the rain.
Everyone have a safe morning, going to Church, work, rail fanning, or whatever you have to do this morning. See you all this afternoon.
Peace be with you. Our THUNDERCHICKENS feasted on BBQ tiger with all the trimmings yesterday. Sometimes, life is good to us. Now to select a bowl. Clemson already has an invite to theToilet Bowl....
56 and overcast in Carolina. It looks like a warm indian summer day with Apache fog is in store for us.
One of the big radio contests is on this weekend. I have participated a little and found I ain't as young as I used to be.....
Everyone take care and have a great day.

A contentious woman is like a constant dripping! (Solomon)
It is right at freezing here, but the sun is very bright and cheerful. Makes all the difference in the world, or at least in Lincolnland.
Not railfanning today. Out tomorrow and will whine until I get to go trackside. Don't have to whine too hard. Driver has a new magazine to read, so will sit in the sun and read, doze and watch a few trains. Include warming up the binoculars under my coat! Hate foggy binos.
CW - if you watch the Huskers, there are some very good players. 9 & 3 season is nothing to sneeze about, but the Big 10 is going to be a tough nut to crack.
Off to find.....
Well, first stints as an official engineer went well. The loco I had was running long hood forward, and our CMO was along as "eyes" on the other side of the locomotive. Got lots of coaching, but did pretty well for myself, I think. Looking forward to next spring and plenty of practice with the shorter trains I'm most familiar with (the trains this weekend were 7 cars long and we ran them push-pull).
Our "Christmas Train" and "Santa Trains" were very successful - over 500 folks rode one or the other of the trains from Utica to Thendara, and over 1000 rode one of the four locals (the Santa Trains) over the two days.
I didn't get to hear it, but did see the portable carillon that was brought to Old Forge for the weekends events. Very impressive, and those who did hear it said it was magnificent.
It's hinting at rain here, but I did finish the ridgecap on the new roof on the garage. That's it for roof work this year...

Evening, all. Mookie, sometime, when we have a Nebraska game televised in our area, I'll watch.
Did our Sunday Dinner a little different today. Instead of having leftover turkey, dressing and all the trimmings, I decided to make Turkey Vegetable Soup. Got to thinking, if you can make beef vegetable soup, why not turkey vegetable soup? So that is what I did. Turned out very well, too, and is quite tasty (yes, I am a cook who samples while cooking!). Hope you all enjoy it.
We made it up to 59 or 60 for a high today, and that was around 10:30, 11:00 this morning. Temps are now down in the low 40s, and still getting steady rain. Haven't heard any heavy rain at all. Maybe we won't get any heavy stuff, even overnight.
There's way more excitement than we need around here today. The southwest portion of Alberta, including the cities of Calgary and Lethbridge, have been hit with severe winds Chinook winds. Fortunately it has been warm, but winds were running from 50 to 90 mph.
CP has issued warnings to the media that grade crossings with arms have been rendered inoperable or are damaged, and urge all motorists to use caution. Employees have been called out for flagging duties all across the area. No accidents so far.
I live just north of the downtown area, which has been closed off since 1:05 PM. Winds were about 20 mph at ground level but over 90 mph, according to one report, at the 50 storey level of highrise buildings. Glass has been blown out of one building I used to work in many years ago, and fallen onto a vehicle. No one was injured. I have had one brief power failure here, and everyone is urged to stay indoors to avoid being hit by debris carried by the wind.
It was really bizarre sounding here earlier this afternoon. I live 5 or so miles from the airport, so you hear the jets passing by once in a while and then it is quiet. This afternoon it sounded like there was one airplane suspended over my place for hours on end. The noise has ended now. It is still 43° with a SW 20 mph wind. Everything is expected to calm down by tomorrow.
CW, a bowl of Turkey Vegetable soup will be nice to soothe my nerves now.
....Bruce, that sounds like severe stuff....we wish you safety, and well being.
Good Monday morning everyone. 42 degrees and rain here in Louisville this morning. Maybe see a high in the low 50s this afternoon, with the rain continuing. We have flash flood watches/warnings out for a lot of the western portion of the state/commonwealth. Bruce, hope the winds have calmed considerably up in your area this morning. Stay inside and keep safe.
Coffee, juices and other morning beverages are fresh and ready to go. On the warmer/serving bar this morning: bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, toast, or you can have a bowl of cereal or oatmeal. There's also some bagels and bear claws, as usual.
Hope you all have a good morning, keep dry and take care.
Peace be with you. 62 and overcast in Carolina this fine morning. Thanks for breakfast.
The state is still abuzz over the Carolina-Clemson game. It seems that tiger fans are retreating into a defensive mode and trying to explain it as a fluke. Gamecock fans on the other hand are crowing from the rooftops. Come on people, it's just a game and 100 years from now, history will have forgotten it.
I had a fun weekend on the wireless during the contest. We had excellent conditions to Europe in the mornings and to Japan as well as the South Pacific in the afternoons. After such a long dry spell, it is good to see the new solar cycle taking affect.
Everyone have a greart day and stay safe.
Tree: We all knew you would do well. Now you can be our resident engineer, roof fixer, landscaper, firefighter, puter guru, printer, - wow! Do you do windows?
CW : Pick a weekend when they are playing the way they are supposed to.....
Bruce: An Alberta Clipper?
Tom: a hundred years from now and the Husker fans will still be re-living all the games! They never seem to forget!
17 and cold, but going to be sunny and in 40's. Not too shabby for almost December.
Mookie An Alberta Clipper?
An Alberta Clipper?
Mookie, those are the cold winds that blow from our part of the world down to yours. These were Chinook winds. They start from out in the Pacific, blow over Washington state, lose their moisture as they pass over the Rockies, and then come downhill fast and dry across southern Alberta.
I was up way earlier than normal to hear the news and see about the damage. Fortunately, my part of the city did not receive any serious damage, although I haven't yet been out for a look. South of me, in downtown, there are many streets still closed and littered with debris. One reporter said the side of one large skyscraper looked like the building had been used as a target for a Howitzer practice. There were many windows blown out on many floors.
As far as anyone seems to know, this is the first time the city has ever had to shut down the central core. There has been a tremendous amount of construction in the last 30-35 years which has created new wind tunnels and the resulting vortexes caused never before seen damage.
As far as CP is concerned, their head office building is not on one of the closed off streets, and their mainline ROW through downtown is not near any of the worst hit areas, but there is still much debris about. There were no reports of crossing accidents here or in Lethbridge, or out in the country.
Right now it is 29° and calm. Amazingly, after being so warm during the excitement yesterday, there is now a skiff of snow on the ground that came down after the Chinook left.
Hope everyone has a nice calm day.
At 2:24 p.m., we have a very cold rain coming down, and a down right good wind blowing also. It is giving me the shivers, and I'm here in our nice, warm house. Current temp is about 48 degrees.
Mookie, maybe you'll have to email me, when you see a good Nebraska game, and hopefully, it'll be televised in our area.
The menu for the rest of the afternoon and tonight:
1. Leftover turkey vegetable soup, w/cornbread
2. Beef vegetable soup w/cornbread
3. Sloppy joes w/fries and garden salad
Can't think of anything else that is going on around here. Everyone have a good afternoon, keep dry, if you're getting this rain, and you all take care.
MookieDo you do windows?
