Our river here was not too high yet, {early afternoon}, but with the rain continuing, it certainly will get that way....and the higher it gets, the faster it runs....

Mook & Q, send the ducks if you want; it is downstream from Quentin to here. But if they float past our house, it means the Ohio (and other rivers) have exceeded the 1937 Flood as far as total rainfall goes. According to what little bit of history we know about our house, the Ohio only made it to about 6-8 blocks north of here, this particular area wasn't flooded in 1937 or since.
Still about 54 degrees here at this hour, supposed to stay close to that overnight, and drop off whenever that "front" moves through tomorrow.
For what its worth, we have satellite TV here, reasonable price, less than our local cable, not sure exactly how many channels of commercials we get, but most of time is worth watching.
(although some of the commercials are getting out of hand!)

Now he is home sleeping and eating . In snow time , he is on call for night plowing when his day shift is done. Some m ore snow is forcast for late night or early morning ( Sun/Mon. Such is life here in the mtns. Shirl & I are warm and dry with the larder stocked just in case. Also took out the ( ice jewelry) chains. Time for some warm cider and cinnomon crisps. Stay warm & dry if ya' can.

Luckily we've not had that four letter word here yet! We have had some flurries, but most of the other(four letter word) has stayed north of the river. The weather guessers have said that with this rain we're having now, could make this year one of the wettest Louisville has seen for quite a few years.

Another annoying practice: running the same commercial two or three times in an hour or so--and another one yet: continuing to run a silly advertisement, or one that says, "This is brand new!" for several months.
There is one particular commercial that we see which should have been dropped several months ago: the same woman complains about wanting to get her life back because she has to wear dentures; the sponsor is a dental service that provides implants. I did not see it for a while--and she was back last week; did she get implants and they fell out?
Going back to football: all too often, when there is a "break in the action" in one game, I will want to see how another game is proceeding--and it also has a "break in the action."

On our way past the Utica Marsh on our first Polar Express trip tonight I noticed what appeared to be thousands of Canada Geese, probably stopped over for the night. Pretty impressive.

As Walt mentioned, we have satellite here at home, and some of the commercials can be quite irritating. Especially the Dairy Queen commercials. You'll see the commercial, it will end, and here it comes again, a millisecond later! Same dang commercial, too, not a different DQ commercial. Used to like Dairy Queen, 39 years ago: now, they couldn't pay me to eat.
Coffee, juices, hot cider (especially for mudchicken), hot chocolate and hot water for hot tea are ready to go. On the warmer/serving bar this morning: bacon, sausage, eggs, biscuits, gravy, oatmeal, toast, bagels, bear claws.

....A couple of things: Walt, some years ago while approaching Louisville via boat...{from Madison}, we came upon some structures along the river at the edge of town and I remember I saw written, the data of the high water mark for the 1937 flood there in your town.
Commercials: The one that I just have to mute when it comes on, as I'm so sick of it...."A fellow excitedly calling out "buy one and get on absoutely free...Free...!" Selling clothing. If it had run for a week or two, no problem, but it's been blasting now for months...!
Early TV: Dad and I went together back in 1948 and purchased our first effort into Television. The set was a floor model, 10" screen and the brand name of it was "Air King"....Believe it used the RCA chassis, as they had certain technologies tied up for, I believe it was 7 years.
Of course TV was very basic back then and I'm sure the costs were so much lower to produce a show. Hence, minimum advertisements.
Item: I recently found a picture of our TV of back then. Actually it was of the 2nd set, as the first one had trouble soon after we purchased it. It was the same brand, but a so called "table model", wood cabinet, and with the same size screen...10". Eventually we purchased a "magnifier" that made the viewing screen larger....To about 17". Of course it magnified the "snow" too. Just some trivia.

Walt just came in from checking our rain gauge in the front flower bed: 3 inches of rain so far, and its still pouring down out there. The wind is picking up, too, and it feels like the temp is beginning to drop.
I've been spending the morning rewriting our Christmas Card list: after I get through here on the Internet, I'm going to go to our Word screen, and type out the list, then print it out. So guess tomorrow is when I'll be starting to address the Christmas cards.
Since it is so rainy and cold, here is what I've come up with for our afternoon/evening meal:

...And it's still raining here as well. I've taken my rain gauge in a week ago as freezing temps we're upon us and didn't want it to break. So I don't know how much rain we've had now since the weekend.
The White River thru Muncie is very high now and in some places it's working out on to the flood plane. There are river walls thru here or the channel dug down that we don't see flooding {from the river}, in the main part of town. There are some low areas though that will get a bit wet.
Sure glad the temp has remained high enough that this hasn't been snow. That would have been bad for our annual avg. snow fall figure.

That'll teach me to trust the mainstream media when it come to RR news. I was up at my Mom's place last night, and looked through her copy of the CPR staff magazine, which is sent to pensioners and their survivor's. I had made the above comment based on a story I saw in the Calgary Herald a while ago, where it used the word "contemplating" concerning certain capital expenditures. Then in the staff magazine, I saw pictures of tonka toys and men in hard hats at the same locations scraping and digging away. Obviously, they were well past the contemplation stage.
Living in the city centre I hadn't realized just how much snow has fallen in the suburbs. 39° and partly cloudy now.

Quentin, you probably saw the signs at the Old Water Tower here, right before the Big 4 Bridge.
It's amazing how much work was done on "flood protection" after the 1937 flood. Most of the rail/highway overpasses/ underpasses, floodwall, levee, etc. have a start date of 1937.(would be after Feb of that year.)
The high mark for flooding just past the "Falls of the Ohio" (McAlpine Lock & Dam, & old Pennsy railroad bridge)is around 55 feet, 1937 brought it about 10 foot higher than that.
Well, still raining here, a bit over 3" in our rain gauge--did look out the window and saw several ducks; they were wearing yellow rain slickers and holding signs that said "anywhere that's not raining" (apparently they were hitchhiking.)
Early TV was lots of fun to watch since it was "Live" & not videotaped; you got to see the actual mistakes, not some edited version. I forget what size the screen (tube) was on our first TV, but a bunch of years later I got an old B & W TV with a 7" picture tube that the entire TV was almost as big as our first set.
.....Walt, that sounds correct as to where we saw the high water mark at the water co.
Item: The {one of them}, famous Johnstown, Pa. flood was in the Spring of 1936. It was the one that caused the building of the great "river wall flood project". The Army Corp. of Engineers came in and reconstructed about 15 mi. of river channel {deeper}, and slanted, large concrete river walls all along the channel as it passed by and thru the wide valley area of Johnstown.
It took until late Summer of 1977 before those walls were ever breached.....But they were....We had a chance to visit the area just a few weeks after that one happened, and one could still see the high water marks...That flood produced water in downtown of roughly 10 ft.
The worse one...The real famous one, occured in 1889. Over 2,000 people perished in that one. A dam had burst up stream about 14 mi. distant....There is even a flood museum there for that one.

Good Tuesday morning everyone. Rain is out of here for the most part. The current temp is 39 degrees. When I awoke at 5 a.m., it was 40 degrees. Our high today is only to get up to about 44 degrees.

Got most of the Christmas cards addressed last night. Worked until about 9 p.m., then decided to quit for the night, and get myself something to eat. Walt had already heated up his supper and ate around 6:30 or so.
Today is really going to be a busy day for me: Produce, then come home, and go to post office for stamps, library to pick up reserved book(s), then to the grocery store for major food shopping for the month. Then home, to continue addressing Christmas cards, and put stamps on them, getting them ready to mail tomorrow.

Wet here, but we'll see the cold stuff soon enough - hopefully after things get a chance to dry out a bit. Temps are still forecast to be above freezing during the day for the rest of the week.
Busy week - FD function Wednesday night, railroad Thursday and Friday, Quilt Auction on Saturday at our PBS station (camera duty), and our fire department Holiday Breakfast on Sunday. The snow is forecast to hold off on Sunday, so hopefully lots of people will be hungry!

I need the upstairs rewired for more outlets.....
