Good Morning Fellow Railfans!

Been working on getting all my old Trip Videos on Tape converted to AVI files before I don't have access to a camcorder that can still read the tapes.  Man talk about chewing up disk space quickly but I will later get these burned off to multiple DVD's and/or BR's disks and stored in different locations.  You got to protect these digital copies like negatives in case things get damaged and have another copy in a safe place!

...Dry and overcast this morning.  31 degrees earlier.

Birthday for Jen....Well, let me wish a sunny, mild day of train watching....Then make it back home in time to let the maid in as she arrives.  {Forgot the butler}.

And a very happy birthday to Madam LaMook!  Unfortunately, distance prevents my being able to grant you a cab ride.  Someday.

Misty today - you can't see the rain, but you can feel it.  Working on a shopping list for a trip to town.

.....I will say, I am one of us on here that has a memory of hearing the news of the Pearl Harbor attact back 70 years ago....The audio came out of a small light colored plastic radio located on the desk in my family's Esso Service Station....In Pennsylvania.

Probably not too many of us on here in that catigory.

Edit:  Not sure about the correct word being "plastic"...Bakelite...???

Quentin, speaking of bakelite, I read on Arcamax History & Quotes this morning, that today is the anniversary of the birth of the inventor/man who discovered bakelite.  But now, I can't remember what his name was, except that his last name started with a B.

For the rest of the afternoon and evening, here is the menu choices you have:

1.  Tacos, burritos, Spanish rice, enchiladas, quesadillas, chimichangas, fajitas; or,

2.  Hamburgers or cheeseburgers w/garden salad and fries (regular or curly)

Desserts:

1.  Chocolate cake w/raspberry filling

2.  Yellow cake w/chocolate frosting

3.  Peach cobbler

4.  Strawberry dumplings

Everyone have a good afternoon, keep warm, and take care.

Mookie, hope enjoying your b-day. Thumbs Up

L.H.Baekeland. Belgian born chemist.

His major contribution in plastics was to produce a polymer that did not explode!

By the by I could use some chili. It's been 30-40 deegrees here in Ar and that marvelous drizzle/ lite rain that just chills you to the bone.

No! No! No! - I don't need a new birthday - I wasn't done with the old one!  Still has lots of good left in it!

The ashtrays weren't even dirty!

Q - I was 2 years too late and probably about 10 years too late to even understand what Pearl Harbor was.  We studied it in grade school and when questioned about what was the significance of Dec 7th, one girl said it is Jenny's BD.  (back then I had a formal name!)

CW -Staying home today - Playing Xmas carols and not doing much of anything.  Isn't that what you should do on holidays?

Tree - now that you are the engineer, you should be able to "drive" that cab all over and head southwest!

Thank you to all for the good wishes.  Sunny day - cold, but sunny.  Warm and sunny would take 2 wishes!  Must save what I can.

.....I will say, I am one of us on here that has a memory of hearing the news of the Pearl Harbor attact back 70 years ago....The audio came out of a small light colored plastic radio located on the desk in my family's Esso Service Station....In Pennsylvania.

I am too young to have heard the Pearl Harbor news, BUT sitting about six feet away from the computer I am typing this on, is the ACTUAL radio my Mother heard the news of the Pearl Harbor attack on. A Stromberg-Carlson floor model. The radio was battery powered, using lead-acid batteries in glass jars, and there was the local radio service man out to do a repair on it. He finished the job, turned on the radio, and that was the very first thing they heard. This would have been mid-afternoon Mountain Standard Time. The radio is no longer serviceable although the innards are complete. It is something I have always had on my to-do list, but it never made it on to my budget list. Not only is there the issue of getting the radio to work, but converting it to run on AC current.

Happy Birthday Mookie. I always enjoy your posts. I wish i could get out and do as much train watching as you do.

Bakelite: I saw a documentary on it once with a fact that just astounded me. Western Electric built phones with Bakelite cases, and there is documented evidence of more than one incident where a person was beaten to death with the phone headset, and the same phone then being used to report the murder to the police. Now that is durable.

15°F and overcast now.

Bruce, that's quite a story on the Stromberg-Carlson radio.  I'm certainly familiar with that brand name.  You might be able to find "it" on the internet here...in some web site of antique radios & TVs.  Maybe some info on restoring, etc....

It sure would be a worthy item to restore, and if possible to have an adaptor to allow it to run on 110 AC.

The radio I heard that "news" on has long ago disappeared.  And the family sold the service station....and...all the direct family have passed on too.  In Fact, that former Esso Station has been added to and renovated to a 24 hr. EMS station.

Quentin, I found info on the net about the radio. Schematics and other documentation, although I have never seen a photo of this particular model. I should look later, it has been at least five years since I was on the net about it. It has always been the case that when I have had the money, I never met anyone I was willing to trust the work to. The case is in very good condition, and the fabric on the front over the speaker has never been torn, so I've never been in a rush to go out and "risk" a repair.

Smile, Wink & Grin   Bakelite for sure Quentin.  I was a wee lad  of 7 at that time. How ever through the years  I found the real meaning of  Dec. 7 This was brought home to me in 2005 when we went to Pearl Harbor. My dad had a nephew that was kind of a black sheep . He could not find a job with the WPA so he left home to  Cal.  in 1939. He hardly wrote home to uncle Ed . There  he joined the Navy in 1940.  No one ever heard from him again. Ifyou ever get to Pearl Harbor look for the name of  R.E. Kline on the memorial wall . No one in our family has been able to find out if  it is Raymond  Eugene  There is no list of kinfolk for him.  So it makes what is left of the family wonder~~ The navy won't tell his name.

Cannonball...........That's an unusual story, and a sad one.  I was within 400 mi. of Hawaii, when crossing the Pacific, but never have been there.  That memorial constructed on top of the battleship has to be a somber place....

Good Thursday morning everyone.  A cold 29 degrees here in Louisville this morning, with a wind chill in the mid to upper teens.  Brrrrrrrr.

Coffee, juices, hot chocolate, hot cider, and hot water for hot tea are all ready to go.  Breakfast is on the warmer/serving bar.

This afternoon is when I go back to the ophthalmologist.  Guess I'll be starting my glaucoma treatments, getting the drops.  Yuck, I can't stand putting drops in my eyes.  Guess I'm gonna have to get one of those contraptions to put over you eye, to keep it open, while you put in the drops.

On a sad note, noticed that Harry Morgan passed away yesterday at age 96.  I can remember him all the way back to where he played Pete on the Spring Byington show, December Bride, then having his own show, Pete and Gladys, which was a spinoff of December Bride.  Then, many years later, came M*A*S*H and his roll as Col. Sherman Potter.  R.I.P. Mr. Morgan, you will be missed.

Everyone have a good morning, and hopefully, I'll see you all later this evening.  There should be plenty leftovers in the fridge for you all, in case I don't make it back in.

Being curious by nature, I went into Stourbrige Lion's blog.  Amazing.  Now if the Lion will give us some details:  your wife is a railfan also?  The blog looks like many years of photography - any details on how it started?  Colorado is such a vast area of sight-seeing experiences - are you a native?

I must be very careful with my curiousity because as a fellow Coloradan (Mudchicken) knows, when I can get my claws into him on a personal visit, I question him to death on railroad details.

If anyone has the time to go thru the blog a little slower than I did, you will enjoy a top-notch vacation and never leave your favorite puter chair.  And.... no commercials!

Good Morning Mookie!

Yes, the wife is a converted Railfan.  She had no interest in the hobby when we first got married but after taking her on a few Steam Engine tourist train rides she got hooked and became my side kick on nearly every Railfan trip since.  It's still not her hobby but she enjoys taking the back roads with me on the hunt to photograph historical places / equipment and enjoys taking rides on the trains with me being an extra photographer!  Our "RRAdventures" topics are design to give you the feel you are traveling with us and they are a mixture of her photos, my photos, and videos told in story format.

My family has been in Colorado since 1885 when we arrived by Wagon Train and became homesteaders!  There has been 5 generations that have called Colorado home now...

"My blog" is currently getting rebuilt at it's new home but most of it is loaded now.  I still have our 2008 and 2009 trips and part of 2010 to get loaded but it covers RR trips dating back to 1972.  If you become a "follower" it's a great way to keep informed when something new is getting posted.  Since joining the Trains.com forums I have started doing my Trip Reports here but the blog will keep you informed which forum they have been posted in if you missed one going forward.
