Another Roundhouse in Germany:

Rheine

52°14'57.8"N 7°27'32.6"E

base for oil-fired steam locos until 1977 (on the last German mainline worked exclusively by steam). Tracks and turntable removed in 1983; roundhouse derelict and will probably be demolished soon.

Here are two turntables/roundhouses in Germany:

Gelsenkirchen-Bismarck

51° 32'23.3" N 7°07'13.5" E

(preserved; steam locos in regular service stationed there until 1977)

Bochum-Dahlhausen

51°25'57.0" N 7°07'29.3" E

Railway museum that runs steam trains in summer

The interleaved turntables you found in Hamburg-Altona and their roundhouses that formed almost a closed circle (total of 57 stands) were demolished in 1982 (RH) and 2000 (TT). You can find lots of pictures in Wikipedia; search for "bahnbetriebswerk hamburg-altona"

Updated the files to the latest additions and I managed to upload them to my webspace (even though most of the other users of that system are locked out of their space!).

I have compressed all 5 files into one ZIP file so MAYBE everybody can download them all in one swell foop.

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/RR%20Roundhouses.zip

That should get you all 5 files at once for you to Un-ZIP.

Here are links to the individual files:

Excel file of all the data:

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/Roundhouse%20and%20Turntables.xls

PDF of the Non-U.S. locations:

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/Non%20US%20Roundhouses%20and%20Turntables.pdf

PDF of the U.S. locations:

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/US%20Roundhouses%20and%20Turntables.pdf

Unfortunately, I am still unable to download the KMZ files so I have left the links out of this posting.  You will get them in the ZIP file.

Thanks to watching a rerun an old B&W "Gunsmoke", where a woman wants to go to Ft. Wallace, KS, I found another roundhouse footprint.  I just wanted to see if there really was a Fort Wallace.

Wallace, KS,   38°54'42.59"N 101°35'39.81"W

I was just looking around those parts last week. It's one of those "holes" in the map where something should just be... and there it was, but I didn't see it. Geeked

There's one in KS, Sharon Springs, the town just to the west of that.

TV lead me to another site... 'Antiques Roadshow' had a 1930's poster advertising vacationing in Dunkerque and I wanted to see what it was like.  Used Google Earth and started following RR lines and found:

Longueau, France, working RH and TT @ 49°52'19.93"N   2°20'53.84"E

I went to google maps and used the street view from the road on the west side. It looks like a concrete pad with a fence around it. Inside appears to be 55 gallon drums and some sort of fabric bags. Probably a hazardous chem storage area or something like that.

Not sure what you're looking at. Do you have coordinates for it?

The structure(?) is centered at 34°51'31.60"N  82°24'53.86"W... sort of at an angle  (NNW to SSE).  Look back through history to see the fence (and the shadow of it) around area.

Added them both... the TOPO map clinches the location of the TT in Greenville... will upload the files later.

Question for anyone that might know...

To the north-northeast of the Greenville, SC TT site there is a rectangular shape on the ground that seems to be surrounded by a tall fence.  It is in-line with where the track from the turntable was.  I am guessing the shape is about the size of one RR hopper car.  Is it possibly a scale?

When I click on the downloaded file box at the bottom, it gives me the options: Open, Show in folder, Cancel.  "Show in folder" just takes me to File Explorer.  I have not really gotten into KMZ files, and for now I am happy with your Excel (?) list of roundhouses that I can easily link to.

This is probably a combination of "file ownership" and "User rights" issues.  You probably are not logged in as an "Administrator" (even though it may say you are... there are at least 2 levels of "administrator"... the real one and the usual one... as well as the "User" level which has much more restrictions on it).  There are ways to take ownership of a file (even at the User level), but they are long and complicated.

If you are up to it, you might try downloading it to your Documents folder (instead of the "Downloads" folder) and rename it as part of the download.

When you click on the link to download the file you "should" get a box at the bottom asking what you want to do... "Open", "Save" or "Cancel".  The "Save" button will have a downward pointing arrow (diamond?) sort of attached to the right side.  Click that arrow and you will get a list to select from: "Save", "Save As" or "Save and open".

Click the "Save as" option.  This will bring up a dialog box of where to save the file.  Use your usual methods of selecting a place that you "own" to store the file (such as a subfolder of your "Documents" folder [don't try to use the old "My Documents" folder, that folder really no longer exists and you can't get to it... it is only there so programs that are coded to store things there can still work in Windows 10].  MS changed the name of the user's working folder to just "Documents" in Winders 10... I think just to confuse us humans!).

Near the bottom of that box will be the name of the file and the whole line will be highlighted... click on that line and then press the "End" key on the keyboard to put the cursor at the end... then press the "Backspace" key 4 times to delete the ".txt" on the end.  (You have to click in that line first or you might delete the whole name from the box when you hit the Backspace key and then have to retype the name.)

See if that works for you.  If not, I have a couple of other ideas that might help you.  Because it works for me, it is hard to troubleshoot it without my hands on the keyboard, guessing things to try! Embarrassed

I downloaded the US KMZ file, but Windows 10 File Explorer does not give me the option to make changes to the file extension in the renaming function.

Try one of these:

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/Non-U.S.%20RR%20Roundhouses.kmz.txt

or

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/U.S.%20RR%20Roundhouses.kmz.txt

If you can download the file, you will need to delete the ".txt" from the end of the filename on your computer.

Edit: It worked for me!!!!

After you rename the file, run Google Earth and either double click on the file name or click and drag it to the "My Places" folder in the "Places" box on the left side of the G.E. window.  (If you double click the file name it will get added to the Temporary Places folder and you will need to drag it to the "My Places" folder.)

I managed to get FTP access to my web-space and have uploaded all the files again with everything added recently (both U.S. and non-U.S.  Thanks to the people that have added to the lists!)

As a test, I downloaded the .ZIP file using the link below to get all the data files... at least I was able to download that file, but considering how crazy stuff is running right now, I don't know if anybody else can do so.

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/sempervaporo/Trainsdotcom/RR%20Roundhouses.zip

That should get you all 5 files at once for you to Un-ZIP and keep the files you want.

If anyone tries to get the file, please report here whether or not it works for you.

Infiesto - Asturias - Spain is at 43º 20´49.70" N 5º 21´46.88 W in Google Earth. "Las Tercias" is a little hamlet near Infiesto. Put you Infiesto coord. Find two icons, ittle blue simbol front of a RDC (simil). One marks "Infiesto apeadero" at southeast (SE) and other at NW "Infiesto estación" (Infiesto railroad depot). Follow railroad track from the SE to NW. The turntable is al right side of main building.

I find what appears to be a turntable at:

 43°21'4.77"N   5°22'2.67"W

But the nearest city/town name is either Las Tercias (.3 KM to the east) or Infiesto (0.5 KM to the southeast).  Asturias is nearly 40KM to the west.

Presently, I have added it to my list as Las Tercias... is that correct?
